Kim HoSang, Yoo SungHyun, Kim KyoMin, Lee SangJin, Jo Frank (Franky), and Jung JiHoon (who would one day be known as 비[Bi], and still later on as Rain) on the cover of FänClub’s second album, around 1998-ish.

Their first album was FänClub Motive Vol. 1… I listened to the Motive album last night (with “In Search of a Dream” as its #2 track). The whole thing was very Teddy Riley-style sound-wise, for example “You can get with this, or you can get with that”, I mean these boys were kicking R&B/rap tail and taking names on the whole CD. I was impressed by that and also with the transitional songs that were almost classical in nature. Very cool. I did notice that “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and “Baby Babyweren’t on the Motive album, so I’m thinking that they must be on this one pictured here… #2. ^@@^

[article] JYP (Park JinYoung) isn’t drama Dream High’s only connection to Rain.

•April 19, 2011 • 14 Comments

Cloud cover by: Stephe, Managing Editor ^@@^

The Powers That Be behind Dream High, who incidentally were also the PsTB behind Rain back in the day, before he split from JYPE around 2007/2008, used Rain’s past formula for success—which is actually a well-used Korean entertainment formula of combining singers and TV dramas—for the fledging show. And for all intents and purposes, Dream High flourished because of it and soared in popularity.

Back in February, Mark Russell, one of my favorite Korean culture writers/bloggers (author of Pop Goes Korea; he also worked on the Discovery Channel‘s 2009 Hip Korea Seoul Vibes documentary on Rain) interviewed JYPE president Jimmy Jung for Korean-Content.com about a current problem (how to still be successful making music when younger people no longer buy music) and JYPE’s successful solution to that problem (Dream High). KPop fans, Dream High fans, and Rain fans: Do enjoy this interesting read!

KOCCA (Korea Creative Content Agency) 2/17/2011 — by Mark Russell

Dreaming of “Dream High”

Jimmy Jung, president of JYP Entertainment, one of Korea’s biggest music companies, had a dilemma – how could his company be successful making music when young people no longer buy music? After all, the Internet killed off physical music sales in Korea years ago, and the rest of the world since then. Endorsements and reality programs can only take you so far. The company needed something bigger.

The result is “Dream High”, a 16-episode music-themed drama created by the unusual team-up of JYP Entertainment (founded by JY Park) and Keyeast, the entertainment company founded by Bae Yong-joon, one of Korea’s most famous actors, known especially for “Winter Sonata” and his pivotal role in popularizing Korean programs around Asia.

The story of ambitious young students at the fictional Kirin Art High School, “Dream High” features several of JYP Entertainment’s biggest stars, a slew of up-and-comers, as well as the creators themselves, Bae Yong-joon and JY Park.

“There were so many negative opinions about the program before it aired,” confessed Jung. “The cast is full of idol singers and band members, many of whom had never acted before. Everybody laughed at this project. But then it started airing and people actually liked it, and its ratings went up and up, and now it is winning its time slot. People have been really surprised.”

Actually, despite people’s preconceptions, combining singers and TV dramas is an old formula, one that JYP Entertainment learned with their megastar Rain. Rain acted in three TV dramas when he was first with the company, most famously “Full House”, the show that became a hit all over Asia and helped propel the young singer to the next level. “Through Rain’s three TV series, I learned how TV is a great promotional tool,” said Jung. “There are so many so-called ‘hallyu’ stars in Korea, but compared to stars who only act, stars who can act and sing and dance have a much stronger position.”

“With Rain, our strategy was to sync the release of his TV show with his album release in each country, then have him travel to the country to appear on showcases and entertainment programs. The basic purpose of ‘Dream High’ is to do that again.”….

TIME NewsFeed 4/19/2011 — by Megan Friedman

We’re Honored: Taiwanese Animators Take on the TIME 100 Poll

You know you’ve made it when Taiwan’s Next Media Animation includes you in its hilarious takes on the news.

If you haven’t heard of Next Media Animation, where have you been for the past few years? A brief primer can be found on TIME.com, but here’s the gist: They provide cartoon versions of pop-culture news for Apple Daily newspapers, which reach Hong Kong and Taiwan, and then land on YouTube for the rest of the world to enjoy. We’re excited to join the ranks of Lindsay Lohan and Tiger Woods as an animated subject. (Do we have to watch out for paparazzi now?)

(More on TIME.com: Korean pop star Rain wins the TIME 100 poll — again)

NMA’s video spoofs the fact that Korean music sensation Rain took the top spot in our TIME 100 poll — for the third year. The singer literally causes “rain” to shower down on his fans, and causes dismay for runners-up Jay Chou and Susan Boyle. But Rain’s ultimate goal? According to the video, he plans to conquer the United States…by riding in on a storm cloud and terrorizing us. We think taking the top spot in our poll (and appearing on Colbert) is a better way to gain American fame.

Hello, Mr. Time 100! With the support of his Clouds and his fans across the world, Rain is the 2011 TIME Online Readers Poll winner, and clenching that #1 spot by the April 14 deadline has earned him inclusion in this year’s TIME 100 Most Influential People special issue. This is such an important year in his career, with him transitioning into a new phase of his life, so we really wanted this for him, especially before military service. We’ve said it a gazillion times since last week, but can you ever say it enough? Congratulations, Rain!

Don’t forget, fans, to give our worldwide Cloud army your daily votes over on the MTV-sponsored O Music Awards site. After all, a vote for a Cloud is a vote for Rain himself—it’s his name and his face on the marquee! He’s got to be tickled pink that his Clouds are being recognized in places we haven’t been recognized before.

See you all later this week!

I wish I knew exactly what and where this was, but all the uploader says is that it’s JiHoon at sixteen years of age. It certainly sounds and looks like him, if you ask me. When he was that age, he was already sounding like a man while other boys were sounding like… well, boys. It might be quick, but it sure is cute, the way he throws himself into his part. Oh, to have the whole performance…!

“Yeahhhh—ask him. Hey, baby.”  In other words, some imaginary chick gets a hell-to-the-naww (a big fat NO) to her face from JiHoon before he gets the heck on up the road (in the song). Haha!

Attention, all 8th Cloud (구름 8기) members:

If you’ve been over on Rain’s official Cloud Fan Site today, you might have noticed that we’ve all turned into Blue Clouds—we newly-joined Clouds AND the Green 7th Clouds who renewed their memberships. Yes, a beautiful azure blue is the color of the new membership year, going forward, and I must say it’s a pretty good idea… otherwise, there would be no way to tell the non-renewing 7th Clouds from the ones who did renew.

There are fans whose cloud symbols have not changed color, however, for one of three reasons: 1) The ID they provided in their application form is different from the ID in their paypal record, 2) their application form has not been received or is missing, and 3) their application form has been received but their payment has not been located.

If you have applied and paid and your cloud symbol has not changed because of one of the above reasons, or it hasn’t changed though you do NOT fall into any of these categories, please contact the Overseas Membership Coordinator Heidi Li by email at joincloud8th@gmail.com with the information she needs to complete your membership.

First, do see » the notice and member charts on The Korean Cloud English Talk board HERE, and then act accordingly so that this is all quickly resolved. Thanks.

We appreciate everyone’s patience during this process, and we thank Heidi for her continued hard work and dedication.

Let us revisit that Love Song performance for a moment, the one where Rain came in #2 on the K-Chart that first week in May 2010. This was one of the last Love Song performances to air before Rain went forward with his Hip Song stages in earnest.

[fresh info] Rain’s Time line on TIME.com: The 2006 TIME online readers poll.

•April 17, 2011 • 2 Comments

Cloud cover by: Stephe, Managing Editor ^@@^

You can see my previous post on Rain’s time line on TIME.com HERE.]

Ah, so yes… there was indeed a 2006 Online Readers Poll on TIME.com (for us). And it was completely separate from the 2006 TIME 100 List (for the editors), as it has always been. As you can see by the screen shots below, Rain was nominated for the Online Readers Poll by the readers and garnered their votes starting in Week 4 of the poll, for Artists & Entertainers. But that had nothing whatsoever to do with the editors noticing and choosing him for their 2006 TIME 100—they had already done that because of the buzz he was creating on the world scene, and the List is not connected to the Poll. (I couldn’t find a final poll tally, so I cannot say how Rain finished up there.)

Take Kim Yuna, Oprah, Lady Gaga, and others last year, in 2010, for instance. Editors had already chosen them to be on their 2010 TIME 100 List before the poll, because the poll has nothing to do with the list. And so when it was time for the 2010 Online Readers Poll to get underway, many of the names were the same on both, simply because readers and editors admire the same people. Readers nominated people for the Online Poll who were already on the TIME 100 List. That is why Yuna, Gaga, Oprah, and others showed up in the 2010 TIME 100—because of the buzz they were creating on the world scene, NOT because they were in the Online Poll (where Oprah, incidentally, finished 58th). While other people like Rain, Mr. Mousavi, Adam Lambert, etc., who hadn’t already been chosen for the TIME 100 had to earn a spot in the TIME 100 by being voted the #1 online readers’ choice.

Let’s review.

1) The TIME 100 Most Influential List (always chosen by editors) and the TIME Online Readers Poll (chosen by us, the readers) have always been two totally separate things, independent and not affected by each other. The TIME 100 can be traced back to 2004, and the Online Readers Poll back to 2006 (so far).

2) Year 2010 appears to be the very first time that the TIME 100 List and the TIME Readers Online Poll had anything to do with each other—when the magazine decided that the 2010 readers’ choice (the #1 spot winner by the end of the official voting deadline) would be honored with inclusion in the 2010 TIME 100. The honor went to freedom fighter Mousavi, with Rain coming in at #4.

3) Nominees from the 2010 Online Readers Poll (except for Mousavi) who also showed up on the 2010 TIME 100 List did so simply because their names overlapped on both the list and the poll, NOT because editors pulled their names from the poll to be on the list. The popular opinion amongst fans seems to be that TIME was “playing favorites” and deliberately excluded Rain, but when you look at the evidence, that does not appear to be the case at all.

I’ve tried to be as thorough as possible while compiling this information, and will be adding it to my previous post. My hope is that this sheds even more light onto Rain’s exact time line on TIME.com for my sister- and brother-fans, so that we are all equally in the know.

And now, though Rain has won the 2011 Online Readers Poll #1 spot… back to some voting, for good measure!

Yes, fans—Mentholatum China has finally refreshed its Mentholatum For Men online shopping site with its new logo (MENtholatum) and with a whole lot of Rain. When I hopped over there out of curiosity earlier this morning, the tentative white test page was gone, and in its place this loading screen with rotating gemstone:

So of course I let it load, and was mighty pleased when the new MENtholatum home page showed up, with Rain surrounded by dancing gemstones. Not that that cute spokesmodel they had before wasn’t mighty fine, but when you’re waiting for Rain, nothing else will do until you get him.

Let’s enjoy a little more MENtholatum site goodness before I go on, shall we?

All of the products seem to be in place, but the entire site doesn’t look to be complete yet. They may still be putting some pages together because Rain’s “page” and a few others only bring up the generic screen below, and you can’t click on a shopping cart and purchase anything right now…

…but everything should be in place pretty soon and MENtholatum once again open for business. » You can visit the new MENtholatum site yourself HERE.

Fresh name. Fresh face. Fresh product line. Fresh start.

@myjanggun Speaks Out in Support of Rain

•April 17, 2011 • 33 Comments

~Cloud Cover by: Terri, Managing Editor :-}

Well, finally, someone at J.Tune Camp speaks out in support of Rain.  Earlier in the day @myjanggun, a manager at J.Tune Camp (Shin Dongjun), tweeted this:

Which translates in English to this:

“Singer Rain came in 1st place on Times 100 online poll. However, the netizens are making ruthless comments about it.

Rain has been making consistent Asian tours for performances successfully. With the movie Ninja Assassin, in the United States alone, 500,000 people have watched it, and currently over 92,000 copies have been sold.

Not just in Korea, but in foreign countries as well, he is receiving votes, which the netizens are responding to very negatively. It is clearly a great accomplishment, but the netizens refuse to see it from this perspective. During the past MTV movie awards, he received an award where they [netizens] told Rain that they congratulated Channing Tatum through Rain’s messages.

I’m hoping that they will see why Time has put Rain up on the polls 6 times already.. This is something we should congratulate him for, for being the first Korean artist to be holding such a title.”

All I have to say is whoever these netizens are that Mr. Shin is talking about should be ashamed of themselves.  Rain fans everywhere, and especially Koreans, should be extremely proud of Rain’s reign over the Time Online Poll.

Not only has Rain appeared on the Time.com online poll 5 times, he has won it twice and was chosen once outright as one of Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people, back in 2006.

The Time.com online poll may be trivial to some, but to us here at Cloud USA, it is giving him some damned good exposure, which is something Rain needs if he’s going to do work here.  So, frankly, his U.S. Clouds couldn’t be more delighted for him.

As far as I’m concerned, these netizens are simply bullies trying to pick a fight.  And I say it’s time we all ignored them and got back to voting.  Shall we?

Terri :-}

Asia broadcast 4/16. Oh my gosh, I just love that new intro… it’s so powerful and masterful and all kinds of -ful. And the new sub-intro is terrific too. Hey… hey…! Hey… hey! Nice job, RAINY DAY post production folks!

As we start off, Rain and the Men are casually marking the steps to the end of “Escaping the Sun”, which you know they’ve done about a gazillion-billion-trillion times. I dare say they could do this in REM sleep without so much as a bobble. And then we go right into marking choreography for “Only You” (same deal, done a billion times, they are old hat at this and could do it in their sleep). Oh—oh wow, just listen to that live band. They are giving that song an awesome sound. Wow.

(Am I the only one finding it hard to not do the “Only You” choreography along with JiHoon? bomp… bomp… bo-bo-bomp clap… bomp bomp bomp clap… Oh good grief, get a grip, Stephe…)

Ooops! Track glitch. No go. Try it again, Crew. (This up-close-and-personal time I’m getting with the Men themselves is too delightful for words, let me tell you.)

Ohhh, sing it, Rain. SANG that SONGGGG and let it do what it do! ♥

He is so percussive, heheh… it’s hard enough for Rain to keep still whenever music is playing in general, but where percussion instruments are prominent (like a drum, for instance), that body simply has to hit that beat some kind of way. He can’t stop it. (Stop grinning, Stephe. He’s just trying to help the band get the bridge to “Only You” down pat.)

“Hey. Hey. Ho… Ah-hah… I love you again.” And just like that, we’re into the next song. And all I will say about this part is that there are some lucky-@ss women in this rehearsal. *gulp* *enthralled* Moving on.

And then we’re out of there, after a little more fine-tuning. Well, not quite. We’re out of there after 40 extra seconds of some martial arts laser fun that reminds me more of the ADIEU! 2010 concert intro than anything that happened at ZEPP. Rain all in black, in the dark, with green lasers… Hmm.

[ETA: Terri’s Take] They’d better just be prettying their wording up…

{ETA #2: Well there you have it, fans. It is our opinion that TIME is just making it clear that Rain has won inclusion on their TIME 100 special list—which the editors have always chosen every year. They choose the TIME 100, we the readers choose the winner of the online poll, and it appears, from my latest research, that they just started including the #1 online poll winner in their TIME 100 list last year, in 2010.

And do keep this in mind: Their special 100 list is always chosen weeks before our poll. Writers can’t compile that amount of information for a special edition on 99 to 100 people in ONE WEEK, let’s be realistic here. And sometimes names on their list (TIME 100) and our list (online readers’ poll) overlap. People often turn up on both lists because readers and editors like the same people a lot of the time. The point is, Mr. Mousavi won the poll last year and they kept their word and put the #1 poll winner in their TIME 100.

So let’s just keep voting for good measure and have some relaxing fun doing it! — Stephe ^@@^}

… over on TIME.com.

We’ve just noticed this morning that their TIME online readers’ poll end-of-official-voting declaration has been slightly tweaked from this, the original:

“See how your picks for the most influential people in the world rated among TIME readers. Though official voting for inclusion on the TIME 100 list has now closed, with Rain having won the honor, users can continue to vote for their favorites until the list is revealed on Thursday, April 21st.”

To this:

“See how your picks for the most influential people in the world rated among TIME readers. Though official voting for inclusion on the TIME 100 list has now closed (with Rain as the 2011 readers’ choice), users can continue to vote for their favorites until the final list, selected by our editors, is revealed on Thursday, April 21st.”

The first version is rather loose in that it doesn’t DETAIL how Rain won inclusion on this year’s TIME 100 List, just that he did… while the second version absolutely specifies that he won his spot on the TIME 100 List by clenching the online readers’ poll. So them tweaking that does make sense to me… The final list, selected by our editors, refers to the actual 2011 TIME 100 List, not the final online poll chart, right? That wasn’t clear in the earlier version either.

Terri, what do you think?

Since I’ve had time to look at it, I don’t really think there is anything to read into this, or any kind of hidden meaning, etc. Nope. I suppose I’m just a little skittish. I don’t want any shenanigans at this stage of the game. None. If you get my drift.

[ETA Terri’s Take:  Yep yep.  That’s all they are doing.  I’m betting that they saw all of the confusion in their comment sections, read some of the buzz around the Internet, and decided that they needed to make the fact that Rain had won a spot on the list a little bit clearer.  He won the poll and he will appear in the Time 100 Special Issue as the reader’s choice.  (And how many times do we have to say it, anyway?  Gosh.)  That being said, I still want all of you lovely Clouds to go back to Time.com and keep voting, to see how high we can get his numbers.  Wouldn’t it be spectacular if we could land him 1,000,000 votes?  Impossible?  Is anything impossible for Clouds?  I don’t think so.  Terri :-}]

» ADD’L INFO 4/21: Rain has topped the Online Readers Poll every year since he showed up. Rain won the TIME poll in 2007. He came in as the #2 runner-up in 2008. TIME claims no placings for anyone in 2009 because of the moot hack (though they did claim moot the winner. Odd.) Rain came in at #4 in 2010. He won in 2011. Sources say he won it in 2006. He has won three years, but NOT IN A ROW. ^@@^

» ADD’L INFO 4/21: Restating the obvious… Rain is the 2011 Online Readers Poll winner.

[ORIGINAL POST]

I’m more than ready to fill in my three-year TIME knowledge gap from 2007 to 2009, when I wasn’t yet involved with the love affair between TIME and Rain, a.k.a. Jung JiHoon, and brush up on the years I do know at the same time. Aren’t you?

This is the time line of events as I understand it, from my research. I’ve compiled it to the best of my ability, and will continue to watch for any discrepancies.

So here we go, beginning at The Very Beginning… ^@@^

°

2006: Rain, of course, falls on everyone.

Rain was first chosen for the Time 100 Most Influential People during this year. He was included in the 2006 special issue and, on the evening of May 8, walked the Red Carpet into the TIME 100 party/reception at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City. (After returning to Korea around the 10th, he went directly to the city of Busan to begin filming “I’m A Cyborg, But That’s OK.”) There may have been an online readers poll held, but it appears that Rain was noticed and chosen by TIME themselves in 2006 rather than winning a poll. ***[Edited to Add 4/17: Yes indeed, there was an Online Readers Poll in 2006! Evidence of it is right HERE. And evidence still points to Rain being chosen outright by TIME editors for their 2006 TIME 100, not because of a poll.]

On the online page shown below, Rain’s name was linked to this finely written, introductory online article HERE. ^@@^

The Magic Feet From Korea: The actual TIME 100 magazine on newsstands contained that same Rain article, as presented below. ^@@^

Rain at the TIME 100 party/reception with Hollywood producer Jerry Bruckheimer. (Bruckheimer is one of my favorite producers, by the way. And he is huge.) ^@@^

2007: Let it Rain!

This year, on the online readers’ poll, Rain came away with the #1 spot.

As the online poll (decided by readers) and the TIME 100 special issue (decided by writers and editors of TIME) were and still are two completely separate lists, Rain’s win here did not earn him inclusion in the special issue or a place at the TIME 100 reception. This appears to be before TIME decided to start that particular practice.

This is also when Rain first drew the notice of his soon-to-be pretend nemesis Stephen Colbert. 😀 ^@@^

2008: Runner-up Rain!

The final posting of TIME’s online readers’ poll this year was a bit skewed, only because Stephen Colbert’s average rating of 69 was higher than Rain’s, which was 67. (That is why Colbert showed in the second position, the chart was going by the average rating instead of the total votes.) But TIME made absolutely no bones about who the 2008 runner-up was—Rain. Rain was not cheated of his second-place rating the way some fans believe he was. Here it is, in black and white.

Soon after this, Rain and Colbert fans alike would be cracking up at the two going at it in a mock feud dance-off, when Colbert invited Rain to appear on his show in New York City. In truth they were quite friendly behind the scenes, and Colbert admired Rain greatly for his talent and dedication to his craft. ^@@^

2009: The year that was rendered moot by precision hacking.

There is no trace of the online readers’ poll chart for this year anywhere on TIME.com (so I had to get it somewhere else), and the reason for that is quite clear—hackers and bots abounded (and none of them were Clouds). VERY embarrassing. A young college student and Internet entrepreneur nicknamed “moot” won the poll by a stunning number of votes, because a community who admired his site created autovoters to stuff the ballot boxes in his favor. They also left numerous voting links across the Internet for Rain fans to use, and all of those votes went to moot instead (which is why Clouds really should be more careful and not be so quick to jump on stuff). They even tried to get over on the reCAPTCHA system. After TIME made that too hard, they then resorted to brute force and special streamlined manual software.

Very eighth grade, in my opinion. But whatever. TIME learned a pretty good lesson (and kept their mouths completely shut about it). And everybody got screwed along with Rain that year. ^@@^

2010: Rain was like a yo-yo.

From the start of the opening gun that year, Rain was up and down and all around that online poll, along with everyone else. He started at #48, shot up like a rocket, and then ping-ponged back and forth between #6 and #5 and #4 and #3 for the longest time. It was a real fight, with Adam Lambert’s fans constantly making a run for Rain’s position, and 2010’s athletic darling Kim YuNa making a well-deserved stand. There were rumors of cheating (one of our community members even found voting software for one of the Top 3 people on an Internet download site…we were really shocked to see it), but the poll rolled onward.

In the end, we held no ill will towards freedom fighter Mousauvi winning the #1 spot because, frankly, with the dangers and sacrifices he had faced in the name of freedom, he deserved the honor.

This appears to be the first year that TIME decided to give the winner of the online readers’ poll a spot in their TIME 100 special issue. ^@@^

°

There you have it, fans.

Of course, Rain has won the #1 spot in this year’s online readers’ poll, and after a long drought, has won the honor of being included in the 2011 TIME 100 Most Influential special issue (the same way Mousavi won his inclusion in the 2010 issue). More than likely, this post will end up on its own Page for future reference, with the final 2011 online poll chart from TIME.com added to it.

I’ve learned quite a lot, and I hope you have too.

Now we’re all in the know about Rain’s time line on TIME.

[article] Album review: Kim TaeWoo’s T-School.

•April 16, 2011 • Leave a Comment

— ^@@^

HelloKPop 4/8/2011 — by Jungbae

Album review: Kim Tae-Woo – T-School [excerpt]

(Album reviews reflect the opinions of the writer and not Hellokpop as a whole.)

When asked about the meaning of his second studio album’s title, Kim Tae-Woo replied that it showed how he was “learning about life through music”. Indeed–the veteran singer has been a musician for every year of his adult life, and he’d certainly have picked up a thing or two from his eventful career with g.o.d., as well as the years after. The statement makes even more sense when you apply it back to Mr. Kim’s music.

Kim Tae-Woo is among a modest number of young, (yes, twenty-nine is still young,) mainstream artists who have never became stagnant in their solo careers; he keeps changing, keeps experimenting, keeps learning. So there’s something bittersweet in that his newest experiment, T-School, doesn’t shape up to its potential…

One of the defining characteristics of T-Virus, and also the immediately striking thing about the new album, is laid-back sounds. T-School’s tracks are often loosely structured and/or feature an easy-listening, comfy feel, and the impression is only strengthened by the experience-based deftness in which Kim Tae-Woo handles each song. Brothers & Me is a standout in this regard, as Kim skillfully weaves a warm melody on a bustling piano R&B beat, singing of unbreakable bonds and old friendships. Rain and Park Jin-Young make featured performances, essentially making the track a small reunion for the old JYP Entertainment team and adding to the homey feel….

Tracklist (recommended tracks listed in bold)
1. 음악으로 (Through Music)
2. Brothers & Me – Featuring Rain, JYP
3. 메아리 (Echo)
4. 이게 말이 돼? (Does This Make Sense?) – Featuring Suho
5. 늦기전에 (Before It’s Too Late)
6. 빗물이 내려서 (Because It Rained)
7. 그대라는 날개 (You Are My Wings)
8. 6년전 오늘 (Six Years Ago, Today) – Featuring Lyn
9. Just Smile – Featuring Mighty Mouth

[article] Korean Pop Star Rain wins TIME 100 poll–again.

•April 15, 2011 • 3 Comments

Well, I’m in the middle of some intense TIME research to fill in that 2007-2009 gap where I wasn’t regularly on the Internet and not involved in that part of Rain’s TIME odyssey. I’ll be sure to report what I find, so that we’re all more “in the know” on this subject…

°

TIME NewsFeed 4/15/2011 — by Megan Friedman

Korean Pop Star Rain Wins TIME 100 Poll — Again

He’s done it again, and we’re not surprised.

Korean pop star Rain has won the top spot in the TIME 100 poll, in which we asked readers to rank who they think are the world’s most influential people. By the time the poll closed Thursday night, he had garnered 406,252 “influential” votes and 33,813 “not influential” votes. This is certainly not the first time Rain has taken the top spot; he won in 2006 and 2007, and placed in second in 2008. Coming in a distant second this year was Jay Chou, Taiwanese star of The Green Hornet, getting 207,239 “influential” votes. Rounding out the top three was Britain’s Got Talent phenomenon Susan Boyle with 151,324 “influential” votes. The top-ranking American on the list was Beyoncé, coming in fifth.

(More on TIME.com: See the full TIME 100 poll)

There were some striking trends further down in the chart as well. Michelle Obama took 30th place with 10,853 “influential” votes, pulling far ahead of President Obama, who took 46th place with 5,543 “influential” votes. Kanye West was voted least influential, taking the bottom spot in the poll. 34,547 votes deemed the musician “not influential.” Joining him at the bottom are “tiger mother” Amy Chua and Jersey Shore’s Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi.

(More on TIME.com: Watch 10 questions with Rain)

Taking a disappointing 53rd place was the dynamic duo of Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert. Colbert has had a long-standing tiff with Rain over the top spot on the TIME 100 poll. In 2007, Colbert even recorded his own Korean R&B video in retaliation. The next year, the rivals even had a dance-off. NewsFeed couldn’t choose between the two pop stars if we tried….

And we couldn’t be more proud of him.

His interest and charity work in helping the young, the elderly, crime victims, disaster victims (and even his own fans) this past year and throughout his career speak loads about Rain’s compassion for his fellow man across the globe. That he is also an entertainer of many talents is simply icing on the cake. Congratulations, Jung JiHoon, from your worldwide fanbase!
