[article] JYP (Park JinYoung) isn’t drama Dream High’s only connection to Rain.

The Powers That Be behind Dream High, who incidentally were also the PsTB behind Rain back in the day, before he split from JYPE around 2007/2008, used Rain’s past formula for success—which is actually a well-used Korean entertainment formula of combining singers and TV dramas—for the fledging show. And for all intents and purposes, Dream High flourished because of it and soared in popularity.

Back in February, Mark Russell, one of my favorite Korean culture writers/bloggers (author of Pop Goes Korea; he also worked on the Discovery Channel‘s 2009 Hip Korea Seoul Vibes documentary on Rain) interviewed JYPE president Jimmy Jung for Korean-Content.com about a current problem (how to still be successful making music when younger people no longer buy music) and JYPE’s successful solution to that problem (Dream High). KPop fans, Dream High fans, and Rain fans: Do enjoy this interesting read!

Dreaming of “Dream High”

Jimmy Jung, president of JYP Entertainment, one of Korea’s biggest music companies, had a dilemma – how could his company be successful making music when young people no longer buy music? After all, the Internet killed off physical music sales in Korea years ago, and the rest of the world since then. Endorsements and reality programs can only take you so far. The company needed something bigger.

The result is “Dream High”, a 16-episode music-themed drama created by the unusual team-up of JYP Entertainment (founded by JY Park) and Keyeast, the entertainment company founded by Bae Yong-joon, one of Korea’s most famous actors, known especially for “Winter Sonata” and his pivotal role in popularizing Korean programs around Asia.

The story of ambitious young students at the fictional Kirin Art High School, “Dream High” features several of JYP Entertainment’s biggest stars, a slew of up-and-comers, as well as the creators themselves, Bae Yong-joon and JY Park.

“There were so many negative opinions about the program before it aired,” confessed Jung. “The cast is full of idol singers and band members, many of whom had never acted before. Everybody laughed at this project. But then it started airing and people actually liked it, and its ratings went up and up, and now it is winning its time slot. People have been really surprised.”

Actually, despite people’s preconceptions, combining singers and TV dramas is an old formula, one that JYP Entertainment learned with their megastar Rain. Rain acted in three TV dramas when he was first with the company, most famously “Full House”, the show that became a hit all over Asia and helped propel the young singer to the next level. “Through Rain’s three TV series, I learned how TV is a great promotional tool,” said Jung. “There are so many so-called ‘hallyu’ stars in Korea, but compared to stars who only act, stars who can act and sing and dance have a much stronger position.”

“With Rain, our strategy was to sync the release of his TV show with his album release in each country, then have him travel to the country to appear on showcases and entertainment programs. The basic purpose of ‘Dream High’ is to do that again.”….

  4. I loved the drama, all the idols were absolutely great, music was awesome and I got to see Taecyeon again after “Cinderella sister” btw that drama was really good too, and discovered new singers like IU, I did not notice her till I saw her in Dream High, and the supporting older actors were awesome, all in all it was a very good drama, can’t wait for part 2, I hope to see more of Bae Yong Joon, I adore him!!

  5. I really enjoyed watching Dream High though storylins were not very complete in places and there was rushing from one thing to another. I loved the gangster boss character played by Ahn Kil-kang, and dont forget kim Hyun Joong played a cameo role at the beginning. That was a ncie surprise.
I loved UI and Wooyung’s characters too…they are affectionately called The Milky Couple…very cute.

I am sad to say that Taeyang grew on me. I am still sore about 2 PM fiasco last year and didnt like Taeyang at the time but his acting is quite good.

Lousy ending as usual! A real cliffhange but have been assured that Dream High 2 is on the cards. not sure if the same actors will be in it though.

Nice connection to Rain though. Park Jin Young is actual a very funny comedian….why do I like him in this drama when I cant forgive him for not protecting Jay Park?

  6. ahn nyung ga se yo. Interesting article. But, like the music moguls of the west. one has to find the niche and the appeal to the people. Young Koreans “asians” watch TV dramas than you would find a Western youth engaging in that activity. Western kids would more likely be playing video games, skateboarding, or watching reality shows or gossip girl. JYP and others using the TV medium to promote their musicians is ingenial concept that works. While you cannot compair the ‘Disney Kids’ actors move from TV to pop stardom to the SK K-popers musicians who also act. It’s fundamental difference between the two that makes the Asian music scene interesting to some westerners. I think they (SKpop) still have an innocense about them even when they are grown. It’s refreshing. Even though the gossip and scandals are kept within their borders. It’s not as bad as western artists fall from grace or being found drunk face down in a puddle on the sidewalk (lol) jal ga! ♥검은 비 평화

Tha’s what i like of SK dramas instead of soap operas or telenovelas. They using the same formula over and over and over. But SK drama their scripts are fresh, new and more creative than the one they use here.

  7. The formula has been used in Korea for years but rain is the result of a very talented hard working performer that never gave up on his dream and through hard work accomplished his goal.

  9. Interesting timing. I just watched the last episode of Dream High last night, and throughly enjoyed it. I was so tinkled with JYP’s character too (funny/goofy), and as a first time actor – he did well. Not at all what you would expect from JYP, and I’m sure the members/groups that work for him were surprised and don’t see him quite the same. I must also add, that the ending made me immediately think of JiHoon, and the lonely life of a superstar following his dreams and working hard. I’m sure that’s were the Dream High ending came from….

  10. Time will tell if they are as talented and hard worker as Rain. They may repeat the formula but Rain is unique. 😉
