[article] Korean Pop Star Rain wins TIME 100 poll–again.

Well, I’m in the middle of some intense TIME research to fill in that 2007-2009 gap where I wasn’t regularly on the Internet and not involved in that part of Rain’s TIME odyssey. I’ll be sure to report what I find, so that we’re all more “in the know” on this subject…

Korean Pop Star Rain Wins TIME 100 Poll — Again

He’s done it again, and we’re not surprised.

Korean pop star Rain has won the top spot in the TIME 100 poll, in which we asked readers to rank who they think are the world’s most influential people. By the time the poll closed Thursday night, he had garnered 406,252 “influential” votes and 33,813 “not influential” votes. This is certainly not the first time Rain has taken the top spot; he won in 2006 and 2007, and placed in second in 2008. Coming in a distant second this year was Jay Chou, Taiwanese star of The Green Hornet, getting 207,239 “influential” votes. Rounding out the top three was Britain’s Got Talent phenomenon Susan Boyle with 151,324 “influential” votes. The top-ranking American on the list was Beyoncé, coming in fifth.

There were some striking trends further down in the chart as well. Michelle Obama took 30th place with 10,853 “influential” votes, pulling far ahead of President Obama, who took 46th place with 5,543 “influential” votes. Kanye West was voted least influential, taking the bottom spot in the poll. 34,547 votes deemed the musician “not influential.” Joining him at the bottom are “tiger mother” Amy Chua and Jersey Shore’s Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi.

Taking a disappointing 53rd place was the dynamic duo of Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert. Colbert has had a long-standing tiff with Rain over the top spot on the TIME 100 poll. In 2007, Colbert even recorded his own Korean R&B video in retaliation. The next year, the rivals even had a dance-off. NewsFeed couldn’t choose between the two pop stars if we tried….

  3. In 2007, Rain was no.1 – that sparked the Colbert feud, drawing attention to the 2008 poll. At the time there were many articles about Rain vs. Colbert, who will win? Eventually Rain came second and Colbert third (Shigeru Miyamoto placed first).

2009 was the year of the bots. About 20 people were involved in the manipulation of votes which led to moot placing first. It wasn’t a huge movement off 4chan or something, there were relatively few people deliberately involved – but many unwittingly contributed. For example, when clouds voted for Rain, due to links placed by those manipulating the vote, they went to moot instead. The first 21 places were all manipulated, the first letters of their names spelling MARBLECAKE ALSO THE GAME. Manny Pacquiao ranked at 22nd and Rain at 23rd. Had the results not been tampered with, Rain would have been number two in 2009.

In 2010, Rain came 4th (Mir-Hossein Mousavi came 1st, Han Han 2nd and Kim Yuna third).

    Rain’s ranking:
    2007: 1
    2008: 2
    2009: 23 (should have been 2!)
    2010: 4
    2011: 1
