Lunar New Year.

•February 13, 2010 • 4 Comments

February 14th is Valentine’s Day for Americans, of course—we celebrated New Year’s Day (the Solar new year) back on January 1st. But for a vast section of the world, this February 14th is actually New Year’s Day… the Lunar New Year, Seol, Seol-lal, Chinese New Year, the Year of the Tiger.

» HERE is the holiday from a Korean perspective.

» HERE is the holiday from a Chinese perspective.

To all Korean-Americans, all homeland Koreans, and all people across Asia—may you enjoy many savory, comforting foods (including tasty rice cakes!) and warm family gatherings this new year’s weekend, whether you are at home or in the midst of traveling.

Rain, unless you leave us early, you’ll still be in New York on Sunday, without family, but you are not alone. Although you don’t know us and you can’t see us, your US Clouds are with you in spirit. If you plan to eat Dduk Gook (rice cake soup), enjoy it! We have our recipes and will be eating it right along with you.

Two new tidbits about Concept Korea.

•February 12, 2010 • 2 Comments

Very small tidbits… connected to news we all have already seen, really.  We’re only posting them because:

» The first one,  some kind of press release by the CFDA supposedly, shows that you definitely must have an invitation to get into the Concept Korea opening party tonight.  Or a real talent for pulling strings and calling in favors.  (No surprise there.)

And:

» The second one, a post by dedicated Cloud Rakota at Rainhk.com (translation: rain bird of Rain Europe, source: Daily Hankook) states that Rain is expected to sing a remix of “It’s Raining” and “Bad Guy.”

Interesting, indeed. — Stephe ^@@^ 4:31 pm EST

…at New York Fashion Week somehow, or if you just want to be a part of the excitement of the events despite the ice and snow, here are some tips to help you along the way.  As you know, getting INTO Fashion Week (whether underneath the Big White Tents in Bryant Park, or inside one of its glittering, high-society New York venues) can be tricky if you’re one of the Common Man or don’t have an invitation.  But a little craftiness can go a long way.

» How NOT to get into Bryant Park, and Above-board strategies to get into NY Fashion Week are HERE.

» A Fashion Week show schedule, presented by Mercedes-Benz, is HERE.

[ *ETA: » Jaunted’s How to get tickets to New York’s Fashion Week.  Worth a shot. ]

Now don’t forget—Rain hobnobbing a lot at Fashion Week is merely speculation on our part, because of what we know of him… he is a designer himself (Six To Five, hello) and thus interested in the genre, and philanthropy is a major part of his character (if he hasn’t sent a bundle of money and supplies to Haiti already, surely he’s looking for the best way to do so now).  Do bear in mind that Rain is also a simple soul who takes joy in the smallest things.  He would be just as happy in New York on a casual, no-frills tour of the sites.  Or sitting in a comfy chair with a bowl of spicy ramen and the Internet.

Where was Rain today? Bryant Park?

•February 11, 2010 • Leave a Comment

This is NOT news. This is only speculation, which is fun, especially since we seem to be in a Rain drought at the moment.

We think it is entirely possible that Rain might have visited The Big White Tents of Bryant Park today. Why? Because no one in their right mind would fly all this way to participate in world-famous New York Fashion Week and ignore the main venue, the place where all the action happens, the shows and hobnobbing and celebrity interaction. Above all, Rain represents Korea and the KOCCA—it stands to reason he would think to put in a casual appearance on their (and his) behalf on a world stage like that. It also stands to reason he would want some rest and relaxation and a chance to simply enjoy himself like a normal human being.

Another reason is this: One thing you can be sure of is that, as thorough as he always is, Rain checked out the stage or dais or platform at Astor Hall, did blocking, et cetera, and prepared for his appearance tomorrow night. And where is Astor Hall? At the New York Public Library… next to Bryant Park. All he’d have to do is walk outside.

» Take a look at Bryant Park’s blog HERE.

Besides, the Bryant Park skating pond may be in operation right now as well. Can you see a fun-loving guy like Rain not taking a minute to get on that ice? (If he isn’t skating around Rockefeller Center all bundled up, that is. Or attending one of the fund-raising parties that are going on to help the people of Haiti, like the one model Naomi Campbell is having Friday night. You know how much of a humanitarian he is.)

Of course, all of this speculation depends on the weather, and whether or not he is too tired or jet-lagged to move. But hey, he’s expected to be here until Monday and we just don’t see the man staying cooped up in some suite or residence.

And so we wait. Where will the next Rain sighting in New York be? What kinds of things do you think he might do?  Can’t you just see him suddenly strolling into some sandwich shop or Korean barbecue place? 🙂

A third article on Rain and Concept Korea.

•February 11, 2010 • 2 Comments

The Korea Herald has now jumped into the fray with a nice article about the extravaganza that will probably hit the New York Public Library this Friday night, and this weekend, bad weather or no bad weather.

Journalist Koh Young-aah writes: “…The event is co-hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA), in collaboration with the Council of Fashion Designers of America. Asian heartthrob Rain will kick off the opening party set for Friday night in New York.”

And “…Rain, star of Hollywood flick ‘Ninja Assassin,’ will open the opening party for ‘CONCEPT KOREA’ while three-star Michelin chef Jean Georges presents diverse fusion Korean dishes inspired by hansik, or traditional Korean cuisine.”

» If you wish, you can read the entire article by Koh HERE.

There are going to be a lot of really COLD people out and about during Fashion Weekend! (They’ve already been running from party to event all Week up there, come to think of it.)  But hearing Rain sing in a beautiful venue like Astor Hall (or fire up the stage or whatever he’s slated to do) should warm them right up.  — Stephe ^@@^

How can the facts about one event be so hard to keep straight?  What’s going on with the media?

NOW the direct translation of another Asian source (Daily Sports) seems to be saying that Rain is to be a VIP at the Concept Korea opening night party, and turn on his charm as a host? Without performance?  I haven’t bothered going to the source or Google Translating it because a direct conversion to English on my part would still be completely out of context, and as much in need of explanation as what I’ve already read.  There’s even been a question on a blog of Rain possibly performing at some club called Polaris… just before I ran into an article about the group named RAIN (that tried to take his name) performing at a Polaris Club in Philly or Chicago.  Good grief.

My English sources could be wonky as well, for all I know.  But for my sanity’s sake, I’m going to let the stories from them stand—for now.  They are in New York and directly involved with Fashion Week, after all.  If I find they are in error about Rain actually performing, I’ll put a correction up for you.  (It’s hard for me to believe that he would sit 14 hours on a plane and risk his life flying into a dangerous blizzard just to get up on stage and say “Hi.”  But you never know.  Maybe he’s just supposed to sing, and not dance?)

Right now I just want indulge in a little speculative thought: Who will get the first glimpse of Rain in New York, shoot the first footage?  Will it be a fan cam?  Of all the many prestigious evening parties that have already started and will continue throughout the weekend, which ones will he go to?  The opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics is Friday too; seeing as Rain’s on this side of the world, will he take a quick detour north to Vancouver on Monday before going home?  Will the bad weather let up, so that he and any fans who try to see him will be safe?

Gosh, I hope so.  — Stephe ^@@^

Guess who might watch Rain perform at Concept Korea?

•February 10, 2010 • 2 Comments

Well… according to http://www.Korea.net, the guest list for the February 12th opening night extravaganza has not been confirmed, but some of the names on the definite list include world famous model Naomi Campbell, designer Ralph Lauren and Mark Jacobs, actresses Julia Roberts and Uma Thurman, and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, among others.

We are green with envy! 🙂

The story also states: “The opening ceremony for Concept Korea alone is expected to attract considerable attention.  Korean-American designer Doori Jung will be the host and Rain, the Korean singer-turned-actor who recently starred in the Hollywood movie ‘Ninja Assassin’ will drive up the excitement on the stage.  The food will be prepared by esteemed Jean Georges and Da Silvano, big names in fusion cooking.  They are to adapt typical Korean dishes to better suit those who are unfamiliar with Korean cuisine.”

Rain will probably be in sheer heaven.  We all know how much he LOVES savory food and trying out new dishes whenever he travels.  And how much he misses his favorite Korean meals while away from home.

Rain one of many profiled in Pop Goes Korea.

•February 9, 2010 • 4 Comments

This book is just now coming to our attention, though it was published back in January 2009.

» From the author’s website: Pop Goes Korea: Behind the Revolution in Movies, Music and Internet Culture, by freelance writer Mark James Russell, is the only English-language book to examine the whole of Korea’s entertainment industry and how it became such a powerhouse over the past 15 years. With profiles of many of Korea’s top stars (including Lee Byung-hun and Rain), Pop Goes Korea features chapters on movies, music, television, comic books, the Internet, and more.”

» This review at London Korean Links further explains the part of the book that references Rain: “…Russell explains the hard work, for example, undertaken by Rain in his long apprenticeship before he hit the big time; or the long contracts which bind TV actors to a particular station. We see in Rain’s breakaway from JYP an assertion of the artist’s individuality and independence while also an example of the riskiness of a company’s investment in its stars.”

We have not seen nor read the contents of this book, so if any one of you has, please let us know what you think of it.  Seems like it might be an interesting resource on the Hallyu wave…? — ^@@^

Rain’s NY appearance confirmed by global fashion publication.

•February 9, 2010 • 2 Comments

It wasn’t easy to find, Clouds.  But here it is, as stated by Women’s Wear Daily (WWD.com), one of the most comprehensive sources of fashion, beauty, and retail news from New York.  The “Going Global” story is the third article down the page.

Posted Tuesday February 09, 2010

From WWD Issue 02/09/2010

GOING GLOBAL: There will be numerous ethnic group shows this fashion season, including the Arise African, Unreserved American Indian and Flanders Fashion Institute presentations. But on Saturday and Sunday, as a group of six South Korean labels — Andy & Debb, Juun.J, Kuho, Doii Paris, Roliat and Park Choon Moo — take over the New York Public Library, the event will be just Act I in a two-year partnership between the CFDA and the South Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s Korea Creative Content Agency. Titled Concept Korea, the project will take on an exchange-program approach with a CFDA shop-in-shop in Seoul…

…Doo-Ri Chung will cohost an opening party on Friday night [Feb 12], which will feature a performance by South Korean pop star Jeong Ji-hoon, aka Rain. The two-day presentation will also include….

Perhaps this was kept so hush-hush because only elite celebrities and personalities were invited, and not the public…?  We don’t know.  Thank goodness Newsprime.co.kr broke the news first over in Asia!

If the really bad weather and expected snow storm don’t force the postponement of the event, or if Rain doesn’t stay home due to safety issues (as he darn well should), it is safe to say that he will probably be in Manhattan around Wednesday or Thursday to prepare for Friday night’s opening party.

Let’s all pray for his safe arrival in the US and return to Seoul.

Rain will be in NYC on February 12th…

•February 8, 2010 • 2 Comments

…according to » this article just released in Newsprime.co.kr online.

The event, CFDA’s Concept Korea Fashion Presentation, will take place during New York’s famous Fashion Week, in Manhattan at the New York Public Library’s Astor Hall on Friday from 7:30 PM to 10:30 PM, and Newsprime states that Rain is to open the exhibition with a performance for an elite crowd at the opening night party.  When we ran the article through Google Translate, that seems to be the gist of what is said… [the powerful singer Rain (정지훈), the music for the musical concept to the famous fashion collections…]  Interestingly enough, the KOCCA, the organization that just awarded Rain the Ministry of Culture, Sports & Tourism Award, is shown as a sponsor on the Concept Korea website.

If any confirmations spring up, we will try to bring them to you.  (Honestly, we don’t understand how, even after all this time, Rain’s body successfully handles all of this jet lag.)

Rain being wooed by Hollywood.

•February 7, 2010 • Leave a Comment

Which project will he choose to do next?  Rain spoke on this subject a while back, right around the time Ninja Assassin began to premiere in November 2009, but suddenly Asian news organizations are bringing it up again now, so let’s talk.

» This nice article on AsianDM.blogspot, from that time, mentions that the 170 million dollar fantasy movie that Rain could possibly sign on for (you know, the one that he said involved a band of bodyguards trying to get their king to safety) just might be a Hollywood adaptation of the popular game “World of Warcraft.”  Hmm… maybe that’s why Rain was trotting around on that horse in those pictures from the Alps—practice.  I’ve never seen him on a horse before that.  And any fantasy buff knows that that is a heroic staple in every epic fantasy known to man: sword, cape, horse.

Rain has also said around the Internet that he really wants to do a romantic television drama and is looking at scripts.  (I imagine so, after the utter torture of preparing for and playing the tragic character of Raizo!)  And he has mentioned working on his mysterious English album a time or two, so honestly, there is no telling just which of these things he will end up springing on us.  It wouldn’t surprise me if he hit us with ALL THREE.

One thing I’m almost positive Rain won’t be doing this year is martial arts film Awaken The Dragon, the proposed reimagining of Enter The Dragon.  Writer/director Kurt Sutter had to step away from the project in March 2009, » as the man himself explained in this blog post, and in » this blog post, and Rain actually » backs up what Sutter said HERE.  It’s a red light, not going to go forward.  So it is beyond me why a bunch of news journalists and bloggers started reporting in August 2009 that the movie was definitely being released in 2010, with Rain in it.  I have not seen Dragon anywhere on Warner Bros.’ list of planned movie releases.  It was Sutter’s original idea, and he was also going to write the script, so unless Warner finds someone else to write the thing, it ain’t happening.  Maybe next year.

If it were up to you, which project would you have Rain do next?

Rain DWARFS Japanese interviewer.

•February 7, 2010 • 1 Comment

This bit of video funny took place in Osaka around Jan 23rd, when Rain returned to Japan for a second round of Legend of Rainism.  A news organization sent one of their people to do a piece on the concert at Osaka Jo Hall and the opening of J.Tune Camp Japan’s official fan site, which Rain attended.  (There is some really nice footage of Rain throughout the video.  The news people are completely enamored with him.)

By the way, I do believe Korean fans were being interviewed outside the arena!  It sounded like the lady with the pink-sequined bow said, “Ji-Hoon, saranghaeyo.”  (“Ji-Hoon, I love you,” honorifically.)

Now, I am quite used to seeing Rain tower over people with his 6’1″ self.  That rarely surprises me.  But for Pete’s sake—I about laughed myself silly at how his entire body dwarfed this poor interviewer.  It looked like a special effect.  The interviewer was incredulous at the fact that Rain made him look like a ten year old, and had to touch him to make sure he was real, which embarrassed the heck out of Rain.  (OMG, a man I don’t know is touching my chest. ROFL!)  And check out how the interviewer’s feet are the same size as Rain’s feet, which makes even LESS sense.

So… why do I have a picture of Rain and good friend Kim Tae-Woo (of G.O.D.) in this post?  To show just how much Tae-Woo towers over Rain.  If Tae-Woo had walked into that room instead, that poor interviewer just might have had a coronary. — Stephe ^@@^

There hasn’t been time for them to be English-subtitled yet, and in future I’ll probably hold off and bring you the subbed episodes, but I just couldn’t resist at least bringing you the first episode when it hit.  The intro has been updated, and right off the bat there is behind-the-scenes Legend of Rainism and Lotte Duty Free commercial filming.  AND there is a new RAINY DAY logo and theme song.  So… who cares about there not being English subs right now?  Heck, I don’t. 🙂

For one thing, Rain’s behind-the-scenes documentary series RAINY DAY Season 2 begins broadcast on Asian television.  (Man, I am jealous.  Season 1 was so good! Hop on over to our RAINY DAY page and see some evidence.)

For another thing, Ninja Assassin premieres in theaters in Japan.  I expect the movie to do quite well there.

According to Starometer.com, on the list of » Top 100 highest grossing films in the Philippines for 2009, Ninja Assassin is at number 27.  Wow.  Out of a hundred films.  Not bad for a Korean pop-icon, you agree?  One thing that I have noticed over the past months is that for almost every negative Ninja Assassin review, I come upon a positive one as well, all over the globe.  There is even a Romanian movie site that I couldn’t translate though I tried my best, but I didn’t need a translation to see the 4-and-a-half out of five stars sitting beside their Ninja Assassin review.  Haha.

I’ve got my umbrella out… not that I mind getting wet.

Love Story, the short film.

•February 6, 2010 • Leave a Comment

If you’ve seen Rain’s “Love Story” video (in one language or all four), but you have NOT seen the entire LOVE STORY short film, then you are really missing out on something special.  Though you may have seen the story’s premise done in other ways (frugal mob bodyguard and rich mob boss’ girl or daughter accidentally fall in love with each other, and mayhem ensues), the effort that Rain puts into giving his character real personality plus making the character stand out is quite entertaining.  It is easy to forget he is Rain and to believe he is a proud, stubborn, angry mob henchman, totally thrown for a loop because he’s in love with the wrong woman.

As you know, “Love Story” and “September 12” are autobiographical and tell the real tale of a painful breakup in Rain’s life that he regrets to this day.  The mob story in the video and short film is strictly make-believe.  (Thank God for small favors!)

So.  Grab yourself a beverage, sit back in your seat, and immerse yourself in this tragic tale of love and loss, a small piece of Rain’s creativity.  (Have some tissues handy.)  It runs roughly 35 minutes in total.
