Okay, so I am pretty impressed by the Vietnamese media so far. Rain comes to their country and they write clear, concise, complimentary articles about him, without snarling, that are pretty factual. Factual. Imagine that! Something other countries seem to have the hardest time doing. (Not mentioning any names.) What is up with that. ^@@^

S. Korean popstar Bi Rain arrives in Hanoi

Bi Rain, who has been known for his boyish good looks and smooth hip-hop dance moves, on Saturday landed in Hanoi to contribute to two military concerts to be held in the capital next week.

The concerts are part of a series of cultural activities to celebrate the 20th year of diplomatic relation between Vietnam and South Korea.

Bi Rain and his comrades in military uniform left through the main gate of the airport where huge crowds of local fans had been long waited for seeing him in person.

There is a clip showing Bi Rain doing immigration procedures at Noi Bai airport on the local official fan club www.rainvietnam.com.

Bi Rain will perform at the Military theater on March 19 and at Hanoi Opera House two days later.

According to a reliable source, after the concerts, Bi Rain is expected to have an interactive session with students at Military Culture and Arts University based in the capital on March 22.

Born in 1982, Bi Rain is a highly accomplished dancer, singer and actor whose acting and music career has expanded beyond Asian boundaries.

He has led numerous concert tours around the world and starred in Hollywood movies like “Speed Racer” (2008) and “Ninja Assassin” (2009). In 2006, Bi Rain was named by Time magazine as one of the “100 Most Influential People Who Shape Our World.”

I’m only able to get about a third of the way through this song these days (the one Rain sang for his mother earlier in his career, “Can’t Get Used To It  (Iksukchjil Anhaso) 익숙치 않아서”, from his debut album n001), but I still want to dedicate it to my mom here. His reason for singing the song during his concerts, and why he eventually stopped, touched my mom deeply and was one of the reasons she was such a Rain fan.

This is for you, mama. I can’t get used to it, you being gone, but it’ll be all right… someday. ^@@^

You read that right, K-Drama fans. Jeong Seung Yeon, Song IlGook’s wife of four years, has given birth to three little Songs. How spectacular is that? Hearty congratulations to the newly expanded family from Cloud USA.

I became a fan of IlGook in 2009, while watching him star in the period drama The Kingdom of Wind on KBS. The way he used his face and his stature to bring “Prince Muhyul” to life was the stuff of a writer’s dream.

Well, Rain, if you want to be one up on IlGook and get those quadruplet girls, you’re really going to have to be on the ball once you settle on a life mate in the future. You might even want to text him on the DL to compare strategies. Just sayin’. Ain’t no shame in that game! 🙂

[article][soldier check] Top South Korean singer Rain to hit Hanoi stage.

•March 16, 2012 • 11 Comments

Cloud cover by: Stephe, Managing Editor ^@@^

It always tickles me when I read “Rain’s concert” in these articles, because that always congers up a certain image that we’re all pretty used to, rather than the fact that JiHoon will be one piece of a HUGE military crew and that as one of the soldier/ambassador/representatives, things will probably go down a little differently than when he was a civilian. It should be pretty interesting, though. And this is a good write-up.

°

Tuoitre News (Viet Nam) 3/16/2012 —

Top S.Korean singer Bi Rain to hit Hanoi stage

According to Thursday reports from international newswires like Newsis and TVreport, South Korean hit singer Bi Rain will be the next music star to perform in a military concert in Hanoi next week.

The event is part of a series of cultural activities to celebrate the 20th year of diplomatic relation between Vietnam and South Korea.

As Bi is serving in the Korean Army (military service is compulsory for all Korean males), he will perform with the Korean National Military Symphony Orchestra on the Hanoi Opera House’s stage. RnB singer and songwriter Park Hyo Shin, who is most well known for composing soundtracks for hit dramas like” I’m Sorry, I Love You” (2005) and “Athena” (2010), will also perform at the event.

According to Newsis, the whole Korean crew will consist of 90 people, including 60 members of the orchestra, 17 traditional musicians and 7 assistants.

In related news, after a Korean-Vietnamese concert featuring top Korean girl and boy groups like Super Junior, Beast, MBLAQ, Sistar and singer IU held Thursday in Hanoi, the Korean Embassy and Korean Cultural Foundation in Vietnam are re-examining the concert’s ticket distribution system.

Yesterday’s concert, which was a collaboration of Korean TV KBS and national broadcaster VTV, raised questions as its tickets, which were supposed to be freely distributed, did not reach most of the audience, prompting a hysterical ticket search among the young K-pop fan community.

Bi Rain is expected to arrive in Hanoi on March 17 and participate in a few cultural exchange activities with Vietnam’s Military Cultural and Art University and the Korean Cultural Center in Hanoi.

Bi Rain’s concert will be held on March 21 at the Hanoi Opera House at 1 Trang Tien, Hoan Kiem, Hanoi.

[article] Rain to start duties as PR agent for ROK military in Viet Nam.

enewsWorld 3/16/2012 —

Rain to start duties as PR agent in Viet Nam

Rain will be starting his duties, as an officer at the Defense Media Agency (DEMA), in Vietnam.

A rep from DEMA revealed on March 16, “The Military Symphony Orchestra will be performing in Vietnam to celebrate 20 years of diplomatic relations between Korea and Vietnam. The Orchestra will stay in Vietnam from March 17-23, and will work with military cultural diplomacy.”

Rain, Epik High’s Mithra Jin (Choi Jin), Yoo Seung Chan, Park Hyo Shin, KCM (Kang Chang Mo) and actor Kim Ji Hoon will be accompanying the Orchestra.

According to their schedule, the Military Symphony Orchestra and DEMA officers will be holding two concerts on March 19 and 21 for government and military officials and local residents. On March 22, they are set to perform in another concert with the Vietnamese Military Band.

The events will provide the giant hallyu star Rain with an opportunity to meet with military officials and local residents in Vietnam as a soldier.

Rain moved from the recruitment training center in the 5th division in Gyeonggi-do to the Ministry of National Defense in Yongsan on March 12. DEMA’s profile page for PR agents updated information about Rain after his transfer on March 14.

Fans have rushed to the page to leave their comments of support, leaving over 100 comments in just four days. Fans are showing their support for Rain while at the same time trying to perfect his profile by pointing out errors on the page.

Rain enlisted into the army last October opting to serve in a regular army unit and was sent to the 5th division’s recruitment training center. However, on February 17 he applied for the Ministry of National Defense’s recruitment for its PR recruitment and was accepted as a PR agent on February 23.

Greetings from Rain: Loyalty!  This is private first class Jung Jihoon of the Public Relations Support (PRS) team under the  National Defense Service Support.

Q. This is your 5th day at the PRS.  How do you feel?
A.  I served as Assistant Instructor at the No. 5 Division before I was transferred here.  I feel excited at the thought that I am able to give support to soldiers as a member of the PRS.

Q. You had been promoted to private first class while in the army.  We heard that your promotion was quicker than the normal case because you had been chosen as Special Warrior?
A.  It’s a man’s duty to serve the army.  Like others, I adjusted quickly to military life and did my best at all the trainings we received.  The reason to try to become a Special Warrior is none other than that you get extra holidays^^.  It’s not just me, all the soldiers had the same thought.  We gritted our teeth and worked hard.  I was not very good at long distance running, and if I might exaggerate a bit, I really ran to the extent like I put all my organs out.  It was a difficult run, I made it and became Special Warrior.  Luckily I seemed to be quite good at shooting. I got good scores (19 out of 20), so that’s why I was made Special Warrior.

Q. It is said that whoever joined the army, many thoughts came to mind the first night they had to stay up.  What thoughts did you have?
A.  Many thoughts crisscrossed in my mind.  I thought most that I am now serving not as an ordinary person but as a soldier, and I had to be absolutely loyal to our country. And I adjusted quickly without major obstacles.

Q. Was there any most memorable training while you were in the camp?
A.  All trainings were memorable.  However if I had to name a few, I would say the solid affection and friendship between us classmates, and the night march which let us understand comradeship. Our no. 1 and no. 2 teams combined to have a 100km overnight march.  We learned helping each other during difficult times.  This should remain a good memory even when I am discharged.

Q.  You worked as Assistant Instructor at No. 5 Division before your transfer.  How was an assistant instructor chosen?  How did you feel serving as Assistant Instructor?
A.  You could volunteer as an assistant instructor. You attended interviews and capable persons would be selected.  This is the first time I am teaching others as an Assistant Instructor, so I thought a lot on “how to make it easier”.  Other jobs may be difficult as well but there is no doubt that assistant instructor is a difficult job.  In order to teach others, you need to have the knowledge and be familiar with the rules.  So there is a system that we have to attend assistant instructor classes for 2, 3 months. You got your assistant instructor badge only after you passed the classes. You need to continue to study.  Everyday you [went to bed ^@@^] 1 or 2 hours later than the others and you woke up 1 hour earlier than the others, because you had to be their model.  There are many difficult points.

Q.  Any changes on yourself before and after you entered the army?
A.  My patriotism has grown immensely.  Rather than thinking that serving the country is my duty, the love of my country has come out voluntarily. I feel great that I am doing a rewarding job.

Q.  Now that you are with the PRS, any particular broadcast programs that you would like to do?
A.  I worked as an artist before I joined the army and I did a lot of acting and singing.  So it seems a good experience for me to do some radio programs while serving my military duties.  As a member of the PRS, we will have lots to do and will be very busy, but I’d like to try radio broadcast programs.

Q.  We are now at the end of the interview…
A.  I am about to serve many people as a member of the PRS.  How I will do it, how many rewarding things I could do—I want to be the private first class Jung Jihoon who could give all of you support and strength.  Thank you.

A special Blast from the past #143.

Speed’s Takako Uehara to marry in July

TOKYO: Japanese singer-actress Takako Uehara announced Friday over her blog that she will marry TENN of Japanese music group ET-Kings in July, reported Japanese media.

The two apparently started dating last year after working on a charity show together in Kobe.

29-year-old Uehara said in her blog post that she is “very happy to announce” that she and TENN are an item, adding that the subject of marriage came up naturally as she spent more and more time with him.

33-year-old TENN in turn said on his own blog that he was “attracted to her (Uehara’s) honesty and gentleness”, before going on to express that the couple will work hard to raise a family together.

Uehara shot to fame as part of the Japanese girl group Speed who made their debut in 1996, and has gone on to appear in a variety of television shows, including the 2010 Korean drama serial “The Fugitive Plan B” alongside K-pop superstar Rain.

He really was pretty amazing. No wonder they were awed—a pop star isn’t supposed to be able to become a stuntman at that speed. 🙂

Hey, ho, Rain, go.

Lovely Clouds,

A few weeks ago, we published an essay by Jon Carsello.  His was an incredible tale about the moment in time when he became a devoted follower of Rain and his work.

Well, that essay got me to thinking.  Over the two years that Cloud USA has been in existence, we’ve heard quite a few stories from our members.  Everybody has some kind of story about Rain and how they have been touched by his magic.  Every one of those stories are special.

However, sometimes, we hear stories that touch our hearts in a super special way.  Like Jon’s story.  And like this story I’m about to share with you from Adrianna, the girl with the red star.

Please enjoy.

He’s Your Friend Forever.  Don’t Forget
by Adriana ☆ [the girl with the red star]

My utter and irrevocable love for Rain is not a secret to the members of my family, but it is my mom who understands it the best, because she’s got a singer idol of her own.   One day, I was humming With-U while folding laundry, with my usual foolish smile, when it comes to Bi.  So, I didn’t notice Mom was around.

Suddenly, she was there, asking, “Are you thinking about your friend?”

“Huh?”  I stared at her.

“…I can´t understand a word, but I’m sure what he’s telling you when he’s singing that song to you is lovely,” Mommy continued.

“What are you talking about, Mom?” I asked, blinking like five times in one second.

“I’m talking about your friend,”  Mom said.

“What friend?” I asked.

“Shrane!” she said loudly, with that Spanish accent of hers.

I stared for seven long seconds, and she stared back, until finally with a calm voice, I asked, “Who the hell is Shrane?

“Shrane, Shrane!  The cute boy you die for!  The singer!  Your friend!!”  She shouted at me.

I thought for a minute.  And then I said, “Rain?”

“Uh…How’s it again?  Rrr-ain?” She asked softly.

I was laughing so much, but she continued, trying to pronounce his name correctly several times.  My Mom doesn’t speak English.  We are native Spanish speakers.  So, it’s hard for her.  Cute!

Still, I had to ask her why she referred to Rain as my “friend,” as if we were close.

She said, “Well, you like him a lot.  You follow his life.  You’re interested in everything that he does.  You smile when he smiles.  You cry when he cries.  You support his career.  You spend hooooours of your life looking at what he’s up to.   Besides, you say he cares a lot about his fans—that he loves them lots, that he appreciates your love and support, that he is aware of all that huge love you girls give him. He cares about you all.

“You are included in that, silly!   Isn’t that being loved back? Isn’t that how love and friendship works?  I know, for you see, I have a “friend” myself too.  I like all his songs.  I sing all of them.  I think about him.  I admire him as an artist and as a person.  I am his friend and he is my friend, whether we know each other personally or not.”

This was the explanation she gave me, and I totally bought it.  I kept it.  I embrace it.  I loved my mom for conceiving of this bond I have with Rain.

At the time, I could only say, “I guess you´re right, Mommy.  Yeah,” as she left my room smiling.  But I must confess that I remained in silence for a few minutes—and I wept.

After a few more minutes, I heard the music of that beloved singer of hers playing in the kitchen—and her singing right along with him.  And I smiled.

Clouds, sharing your special stories is what this series, which we are calling “From Rain’s Clouds,” is all about.  So, if you have a Rain story that you think we might like to post and that you don’t mind having us publish on Cloud USA, please e-mail it to Terri or Stephe at letitrain@cloudusa.org.  We’d love to share it.

Thank you,
