I’m A Cyborg, but That’s OK & Other CJ&M ENT Films Streaming on Netflix

~Cloud Cover by Terri :-}, Managing Editor

Okay, Clouds.

Remember when somewhere someone somewhere hinted that CJ Entertainment and Netflix was about to be in cahoots with each other?  Just in case you don’t recall, it was mentioned on Kobiz (Korean Film Biz Zone) RIGHT HERE.

Well.  Since I am a Netflix  customer, I’ve been checking off and on for these films to pop up.  And tonight, lo and behold, what do I find?  This lovely little jewel…

…in Netflix’s Instant Play section.

Of course, I immediately added it to my Instant Play queue.  And since I’m off tomorrow, I just might spend a little time revisiting this delightful little romantic comedy.

In spite of winning the Alfred Bauer Award at the 57th Berlin International Film Festival (and being selected as the opening film for the Hong Kong International Film and winning Rain a Best New Actor Award at the 43rd Baeksang Awards), Cyborg was largely overlooked by moviegoers everywhere, which was a crying shame, because this film was one that likely could have resonated with many viewers if they had only given it half a chance.  But they didn’t—not in South Korea or anywhere else for that matter—especially not in the U.S., where the promotion of this film was much too little and came far too late.

What’s amazing to me (not as a Rain fan, but as a writer) is that so many reviewers who arbitrarily panned this film totally missed that the brilliance of it, which was in Park Chan-wook’s understated, comedic presentation of a cast of characters who, as far as they were concerned, were totally sane—but totally weren’t.  Seriously.

By the way, there are 1600+ foreign films over at Netflix for your viewing pleasure, so have fun trying to decide which one you are going to watch after you watch Cyborg, okay?

Oooh.

Terri :-}  (rubbing her hands together with delight!)

Do enjoy this most excellent write-up, fans.

An aside: People simply assumed that “Raizo” was a Japanese character because of the flavor in the plot (the names, the location, etc.) The truth of the matter is that his nationality was never specified. Children were abducted from their parents from all over the world. Lord Ozunu gave them Japanese names because he was Japanese and they were his “children.” What else would he have done? “Hm. I think I’ll name you… Robert. Abdul? Maybe Genghis.” Um, no.

“Raizo” could be from anywhere, even a country outside of Asia. Frankly, that fact opened the plot up quite nicely and made the character identifiable for a lot more people.

Which era is the coolest? 1986....

KOFFIA (Korean Film Festival in Australia) Blog 3/6/2012 — written by Paul Bramhall

Going International: A Look at ‘Ninja Assassin’ & ‘The Warrior’s Way’

The idea of any Asian actor or actress wanting to break into the international English language market has always been a tough one, perhaps best illustrated by the influx of Hong Kong talent to Hollywood in the lead up to 1997’s handover of the island back to China, when all movies would be subject to the governments board of censors, and suddenly the bad guys could no longer be “those dirty mainlanders”.

Although at first it seemed that Hollywood greeted them with open arms, for many who made the move those same arms quickly became a bear hug. Jet Li could do kung-fu, therefore in every movie he will play an Asian cop, Tsui Hark made some memorable action movies, therefore he will only direct moves starring Jean Claude Van Damme, Ringo Lam also made some good action movies, so he was destined to the same fate of directing movies starring Jean Claude Van Damme.  In fact the only director who escaped the curse of directing Jean Claude Van Damme was John Woo, who directed him just once in 1993’s ‘Hard Target’.

....or 2010, you decide!

Even an excellent actor like Chow Yun Fat got roped into essentially playing the same character he was known for in his most famous action movies like ‘A Better Tomorrow’ (recently re-made in Korea) and ‘Hard Boiled’, and soon enough everyone grew weary and headed back home. The only person who stuck it out was Jackie Chan, who after breaking almost every bone in his body during his Hong Kong movies, was probably happy to enjoy the safety of Hollywood in his later years and cash the cheques.

Hollywood got to shape its new Hong Kong talent pool not so much on their acting or directing skills, so much as on whatever roles they had played before which would have the most appeal to what they perceived an English speaking audience would want to see.

So, in a movie industry like that of Korea, where first and foremost acting is the priority above all else, what kind of opportunities would await beyond the soju guzzling peninsula? For a long time, it was known that Lee Byung-hun was the only Korean actor with a Hollywood agent, and although he was cast yet again in a very stereotypical role for his first, and so far only, Hollywood foray ‘G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra’, he did a good job of almost stealing the show as the white clad ninja ‘Storm Shadow’.

But surprisingly the Korean who would get the honor of having their own starring role in a Hollywood production first was K-pop megastar Rain, who after having a brief appearance in the 2008 Wachowski Brothers movie ‘Speed Racer’, jumped to headlining the 2009 slice ‘em and dice ‘em ‘Ninja Assassin’.

A year later in 2010, Korea made a co-production with New Zealand called ‘The Warrior’s Way’, which starred Jang Dong-gun in the lead role in a nod to the cowboy western movies of old, which was helmed by Sngmoo Lee. While a movie which revolves around a ninja hacking and slicing his way through modern day Europe, and a movie about an Asian warrior settling down in a turn of the century ramshackle western town may not sound very similar, interestingly the structure of both movies are remarkably so.

For a start both characters are on the run from their clans, who view them as traitors. Jang Dong-gun’s Sad Flutes clan are after him because he wouldn’t kill the last surviving member of a rival clan, who is just a baby, and Rain’s Ozunu clan are after him because he refused to kill a fellow clan member who had tried to escape.  In typical western made movie style, it appears neither are actually playing a Korean character, with Dong-gun’s character being hinted at as being Chinese, and Rain’s character is alluded to as being Japanese.

However the similarities don’t stop there, each respective clan’s master is played by a legendary icon of action cinema – the master of the Sad Flutes clan is played by Shaw Brothers legend Ti Lung (who, in connection to the movie I referenced earlier, is also in the original ‘A Better Tomorrow’), and the master of the Ozunu clan is played by 80’s American B-movie ninja icon Sho Kosugi (whose son, Kane Kosugi, was also the star of Jung Doo-hong & Ryoo Seung-wan’s short movie for Motorola phones, ‘Timeless’) – and both play cruel and spiteful characters who will stop at nothing to track down their target.

The style of the action is also very similar. When the action does come, both movies shed liberal amounts of CGI blood (in my opinion a rare case of being done well for both movies), and employ the ‘300’ technique of the stop-start slow-motion/speed-up action scenes.

All in all despite so many similarities, I enjoyed both movies for what they where, light popcorn fodder with an Asian influence, and for me I’ll probably watch them both again.  The bigger question of if Korean actors can break out into more diverse roles that don’t involve them brandishing a sword to slice up some form of enemy is yet to be seen, with even 2009’s live action adaptation of the Japanese manga ‘Blood: The Last Vampire’ starring the beautiful Jeon Ji-hyun in the title role, still essentially following exactly the same formula.

As has always been the case, Hollywood and other western movie industries are never quite sure what to do when Asian actors come calling, be it from Korea, China, or Japan. But at least in the case of ‘Ninja Assassin’ and ‘The Warrior’s Way’, the characters that Jang Dong-gun and Rain play are treated with respect, and don’t have to put up with the poor stereotyping that the Hong Kong clan had to deal with a little over a decade ago.

Both characters are strong, silent types, and most refreshing of all is that both are given a western love interest in the form of Kate Bosworth & Naomie Harris respectively, minus any type of racial stereotyping, the ‘Rush Hour’ movies should take note. All in all, while these movies may not be perfect, they’re a step in the right direction, and if nothing more, Rain has probably gained a few more fans to his already huge legion of followers.

Word on the street: PFC JiHoon’s address after his division change?

•March 8, 2012 • 1 Comment

Cloud cover by: Stephe, Managing Editor ^@@^

Firstly, to clarify… these new addresses for JiHoon were posted on The Cloud Rain News Board and were sourced from DC Inside. To our knowledge, they did not come from the military or from Rainy Entertainment and, to our knowledge, have not been confirmed by either of those parties yet, as of this posting.

Secondly, I’m putting them up for now, in lieu of any forthcoming information from Rainy or the military, because I do know that DEMA (the ROK Defense Military Agency) does indeed list its official address as being at 54-99 Duteopbawi Road in Yongsan District, in the Special City of Seoul. And I have seen other celeb fan sites mention the Korean Forces Network in connection with Yongsan Inside Route 21. So the addresses below have a good chance of being legit.

FYI: A ro (로) is a long thoroughfare, while a gil (길) is a shorter street. So perhaps Yongsan-go-gil is connected in some way to Duteopbawi-ro, or the compound can simply be reached by using both. Military installations are HUGE and it takes many roads to get past them, through them, and around them.

More than likely, we will wait a bit for further clarification before using either one, and continue writing JiHoon his Cloud Letters on The Cloud Fan Site for now. He hasn’t transferred yet anyway. It is up to each of you how you wish to proceed at this time.

Many actors and singers help serve their fellow troops in various areas of entertainment and public relations, it seems. So why, after proving himself as tough and as dedicated as anyone else and not taking the Easy Road, is Rain being given flack by some folks for doing the same thing? Did you disgruntled people give all the other celebs a hard time too, or just him? And just why do you think you can dictate what a person does with their own life, anyway? Who made you the authority on where any soldier or celebrity should serve?

Stop being petty and leave him alone. ^@@^

eNews24 3/8/2012 — [English translation by 화니 @The Cloud Rain News Board]

Rain’ll move from Yeonchun to Seoul on the 13th due to the change of his assignment

Upcoming March 13, singer and actor Rain (his real name is “Jung Ji Hoon”) is going to transfer from a recruit training center attached to the 5th Division to Defense Agency for Public Information Services in Seoul’s Yongsan-gu where he will newly serve.

There will be a change in his assignment from a teaching assistant in a recruit training center attached to the 5th Division to a member of the support group for Defense Agency for Public Information Services on this day.

During the phone call with enews on the 8th, an official from the Defense Agency for Public Information Services said, “I know Rain’ll come here around March 13th. We’re discussing what he has to do.”

In accordance with his hope to become a normal soldier, Rain had served as a teaching assistant in a recruit training center attached to the 5th Division since his enlistment last October, but he submitted an application to the Defense Agency for Public Information.

He was selected as a member of the group after going through the interview process on the 23rd of the same month.

The assignments of actor “Kim Jae Wook”, actor “Im Joo Howan”, and hip hop group Untouchable’s member “Sleepy” [Kim SungWon—^@@^] will also be changed as in Rain’s case.

Right now, actor “Lee Dong Geon”, actor “Lee Wan”, actor “Kim Ji Hoon”, actor “Yu Geon”, Epik High’s member MithraJin, singer “Park Hyo Shin”, singer “Yu Seung Chan”, etc. are serving as members of the support group for Defense Agency for Public Information Services.

Rain’s first movie, also starring the talented and lovely Im SooJeong, premiered in 2006; this review is new and just recently written for KOFFIA’s 2012 Korea Blogathon event.

Cineawesome 3/5/2012 — written by Jeff Wildman

I’m A Cyborg, But That’s Okay (2006).

I wanted to start my contribution to The 2012Korean Blogathon with a bang! I wanted to start with something big, something explosive, something exciting, an edge of your seat thrill ride! Well, I didn’t. Instead I decided to share my thought on one of the most unique and quirky films I have ever seen, and one that I truly love. I’m a Cyborg, But That’s Okay is one of my personal favorite films from my absolute favorite Korean Director, Park Chan-wook. Maybe you’ve heard of him? Over the years Park has delivered us some unforgettable films, going back to 2000’s political thriller-masterpiece JSA. Then immersing himself in the internationally acclaimed vengeance trilogy (Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy, Lady Vengeance). For Cyborg we get the opportunity to see a different side of Park, the romantic comedy side. Don’t let that frighten you, because this is not your typical romance comedy. Remember, it’s a romantic comedy written and directed by Park Chan-wook. . .

Now comes the obligatory part of this article where I explain the plot of I’m a Cyborg, if you’ve seen it you will probably smile, if you haven’t please don’t be afraid, like I said. It’s Park Chan-wook, and probably at his most creative to boot. Young Goon (Lim Su-jeong) has been traumatized after being forced to witness her grandmother, who happens to think she is a rabbit . . . and only eats radishes, be dragged away by the “White Coats” and taken to a mental hospital.  She is also convinced that her grandmother was trying to tell her the meaning of existence as she was being tucked aboard an ambulance and driven away. On top of that Granny forgot her dentures which she needs to eat her radishes. This obviously did some psychological damage to Young Goon, because she is now convinced that she is in fact a Cyborg, and stops eating because if she does, the food will damage her inner mechanics. Instead she licks batteries in an attempt to recharge herself. (Her toes light up when fully charged you see).

The last straw is drawn when she cuts her wrists open and almost kills herself by inserting live electrical wire into the slit wrists in an attempt to recharge. So her mother sends her off to a sanitarium. Now with her grandmother’s dentures by her side, which she must wear in order to communicate with the vending machines, telephones, and grandfather clock, she is on a mission. She must find her grandmother, kill the doctors holding her captive, return the dentures, and discover the purpose of her existence. But this is becoming increasingly difficult as her attempts to recharge are somehow unsuccessful.

While in the hospital she meets up with Il-sun, a kleptomaniac who is known throughout the hospital for stealing everyone’s personalities. Il-sun is possibly the best character in the film, being played by South Korean pop star Rain. He is not entirely insane as he had himself committed to avoid going to jail. He is at least sane enough to notice that Young Goon is killing herself by not eating, but at the same time he does not agree with the hospitals force feeding tactics. So he decides to find a way to get her eating, without damaging her circuits. It’s the relationship between the two that can put the film into the category of a romantic comedy, but being a Park film their relationship is deliciously decorated by his incredible visuals and imagination.

Often we are lifted from the reality of the film and taken away to Young-goons hallucinations. Including a memorable and forgiving scene where she arms herself with apparently build in finger guns and starts hunting down and slaughtering all the doctors in the hospital in a very brutal fashion, meanwhile all the inmates go about their regular activities without notice. Now what would a Park film be without such a violent scene? But despite the grim depiction, it’s actually quite humorous and fun to watch because you know she is just standing their pointing all her fingers at the doctors, who are just looking back in confusion. Okay so perhaps you have to be a bit sick to enjoy that, but who didn’t enjoy the mentally disabled man in Mr. Vengeance?

The film also has a wonderful cast of very colorful characters throughout the hospital. Including a memorable appearance by Park Chan-wook regular Oh Dal-su playing a patient who thinks everything is his fault! Then there is a woman who is a compulsive liar, and in fact early in the film she is walking Young-goon throughout the hospital introducing all the characters who we will see throughout the film, and telling their stories. This is usually the easiest way to introduce so many characters at once in a film; of course in this case we soon learn none of its true!

I’m a Cyborg is something that could have been easily overlooked or passed by a general audience, and guaranteed will not appeal to everyone, maybe even long time Park fans. It’s nothing close to the violent revenge stories told prior. But it is very much worth a look. It’s a beautiful film, with a very sweet story when you look past all the outer madness of the characters. As we witnessed last year with Martin Scorsese’s masterpiece Hugo, it’s always nice to see directors try something different, and I think Park did very well in his attempt at something lighter, and he still manages to express his familiar imaginative visual flair. So in the end it may not be his absolute best film, but that’s okay!

[synopsis][spoiler-ish] Soar Into The Sun on KOBIZ.

•March 4, 2012 • 2 Comments

Cloud cover by: Stephe, Managing Editor ^@@^

Here is the synopsis to Rain’s upcoming Korean blockbuster movie 비상 [飛上]: 태양가까이 (Soar into The Sun) on the Korean Film Biz Zone, the online film news site for KOBIZ, a government-supported (but self-run) affiliate of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. This is not really a movie spoiler, but a certain revelation could be seen as spoiler-ish to some, so if you don’t want to know anything more about the plot than you already do, skip it and watch the movie. KOBIZ had to have been given the nod to release this, so we’re bringing it to you.

(Shades of Top Gun: “Maverick” hotdogs himself into deep trouble, rule-breaker “Maverick” and by-the-book’er “Ice Man” clash and have no love for each other, “Maverick” is totally smitten with strong, capable female (we’re praying for the lovebirds to have some “Take My Breath Away” afternoon delight), beloved character bites the dust (a.k.a. Maverick’s “Goose” moment), the enemy makes a Big Move… So great! We love it!)

This is the BEST synopsis we’ve seen to date, and we’re doggone excited about this movie. Just don’t let “TaeHoon” soar into the sun, okay? Argh. We’re begging! 🙂

A most wonderful thing that came of out Rain’s Back To The Basic comeback era (April–May 2010) was the “Love Song” making of music video footage. Rain and Han YeSeul were ultimate professionals, meshed really well, and did what was necessary to get the perfect shot for every plot line and sub-plot line for the MV.

And wow, they were so good at creating the illusion… they pretty much had us on the ropes. @__@

Well, ain’t that the truth? If you haven’t heard of Rain, you’ve been living under about twenty rocks somewhere out around Alpha Centauri. For real.

What an amazing place, Seoul. I so look forward to visiting there in the future!

Seoul, Korea

Seoul changes so quickly that navigating it can be a serious challenge if your map is more than a year or so old. It’s not uncommon for locals to get lost in areas they thought they knew.

The city has been in rebuilding mode for 50 years—to restore a war-torn land in the 1960s, thanks to ambitious urbanization projects in the ’80s and ’90s. Today, hundreds of sites are undergoing government-led reconstructions. But redevelopment isn’t the only reason for the city’s fresh feeling—once-staid Seoul has become a continental trend leader. You’re out of the buzzstream if you’ve never heard of pop star Rain. International fashion brands are serving up their boldest designs out of borderline-outrageous buildings. Rem Koolhaas’s Prada Transformer, an event space, opened in 2009; major projects by Zaha Hadid and Daniel Libeskind are in the works. Brand-new cafes and galleries seem to be everywhere…

This appears to be a revisit yesterday to the Soar Into The Sun press conference at the Busan International Film Festival on October 7 last year, by a show out of Japan called Korean Star.

What a great look back. Enjoy!

Oh-hooo! Nicely done, Samsung.

Incidentally, we may now have an idea of how hot-dogger and flying maverick “Lt. TaeHoon” is going to get himself into deep kimchi… Wow, man, no wonder the Brass is going to come down hard on you, that’s some insane ****! 🙂 (looking forward to it)

[brief][Eng trans] It Rained for a moment in Northern France.

Rain was mentioned in regional French daily La Voix du Nord (The Voice of the North) this past Tuesday, February 28.

[English translation by Stephe @Cloud USA]

Rain under the flags.

As our national Johnny in his time, Rain, Korean pop superstar, was called to do his two-year military service. However, he was recruited as a soldier of entertainment, to which should ensure a stay under the quiet flags.

“Under the flags” appears to be another way of saying “in the service of one’s country” or “in the military”. And France’s “national Johnny” seems to be referring to French icon and mega-entertainer Johnny Hallyday (also known as the French “Elvis Presley”). If I’m off here, I’m hoping a native French speaker will kindly let me know so that I can correct my post!

Yes, let us hope there is only quiet and peacetime during Rain’s compulsory service. Let us hope there is quiet and peacetime during every Korean soldier’s compulsory service, as it should be.
