“Many thanks to Rain.”

•May 18, 2010 • 1 Comment

Asian source TV EDaily is reporting that, after some media and netizens criticized Rain for staging Hip Song so similarly to Kim Seong-Jae’s “As I Told You” performance from 1995, not only has Rain has expressed his admiration for the late singer, but Seong-Jae’s mother has thanked Rain for giving her son’s fans a nice present with his staging.

She is quoted as saying, “My son’s death has been perverted by some media reports and netizens, so it has remained in our family’s minds as a bruise, but Rain trying to become a major world star [in this manner] has renewed my son and made a deep impression on my son’s fans once again.  Many thanks to Rain.”

The late Kim Seong-Jae debuted with group Duce back in 1993, but after two years went solo in November 1995.  The day after that comeback, he was found dead.  His then-girlfriend was held under suspicion but released due to lack of evidence, and the mystery of his death has never been solved.

Rain talks about past injuries.

•May 18, 2010 • Leave a Comment

Asian news sources Nate and Naver have reported that on the MBC program Come Over And Play (Come and Play, Come Out To Play, etc.), that was broadcast on May 17th, Rain talked about a few injuries he’d gotten during the course of his career.  He is quoted as saying, “Once, I misstepped and fell through the stage during my concert in Hong Kong, and blacked out, but I finished the concert without any further mischance.  I was told [by doctors at the hospital afterwards] that I had a slight concussion and had fractured my arm.”

And in addition, he said, “I was on a plane flying to Australia and it nearly killed me. [Because there was sudden, violent turbulence. —Stephe ^@@^]  I always wore my seatbelt, but I wonder why I wasn’t wearing it at that time.  That’s why I was thrown sharply upwards and I thought I really was going to die then.”  Rain continued, “I feel dizzy just at the thought of the incident.  Just be sure to fasten your seat belt when you are getting on an airplane or in a car.”

It is said that Come Over And Play reached number 1 in the ratings with Rain’s appearance, and got its highest numbers ever (16.3%).

(Thanks to rain bird and Rain Europe for this information.)

°

We remember that terribly scary incident he’s talking about.  Where, during his Rain’s Coming world tour stop in Hong Kong (multiple nights, January 2007), the elevator/trap door in the stage floor didn’t close on cue and Rain accidentally fell through it.  At the time, the audience had no idea that it had even happened because he got himself back on stage pretty quickly.  But as we understand it, the drop was about six or seven feet, and if the usual pile of debris (metal folding chairs, props, etc.) had been under that hole and he’d fallen into that, he would have had more than a broken arm.  Talk about lucky.  As it was, looked like Rain wore some type of soft support on that arm for the remainder of the tour and continued to dance full out.  How he withstood that pain, especially without a cast, we just don’t know.

If you notice, during later tours, that familiar elevator/trap door (that used to always be center stage) was placed somewhere out of the way.  For Legend of Rainism, it was up on the second level, past the band, where Rain could never casually step on it.  And when LoR was in Las Vegas, there wasn’t a trap door at all—Rain always came and left the stage through the back curtains. — Stephe ^@@^

Word on the street: Hip Song to reflect The Karate Kid?

•May 18, 2010 • 5 Comments

Allkpop 5/18/2010 — It was revealed on the 18th that K-pop king, Rain will be collaborating with fellow global star, Jackie Chan for his Hip Song MV. And it will not be just any MV as it will also be used to promote Jackie Chan’s upcoming movie, Karate Kid.

J.Tunes Entertainment expressed, “Both Rain and Jackie Chan are close friends and the latter had suggested to create a MV for the movie.”

The MV will be released on the 20th and will be used in conjunction with movie promotions for the Karate Kid which opens on June 10th.

» Rain Collaborates With Jackie Chan for Hip Song MV

Great heavens.  We were already excited just hoping for a Hip Song music video, but this?  Unbelievable.  Just try to wrap your minds around what this actually means—Rain’s newest video, to be released on the 20th, containing scenes from an upcoming Hollywood movie from Columbia Pictures, » starring Will Smith’s son Jaden and our man Jackie.  And Jackie made the suggestion?  Holy Toledo.  (The movie itself looks incredible, by the way.)

What exposure!  And we can’t think of a better collaboration, quite frankly.  Rain and the legendary Jackie Chan?  Golden.  — Stephe ^@@^

“Or… or stars!”  “Or nunchucks!”  “Or swwwwords!”  The way Al McGhee and John Delia of » Your Entertainment Ticket clowned around before McGhee’s interview with Rain last year had us cracking up.  Crazy guys.  Pretending Rain was going to go Ozunu on them. Haha!

Enjoy this old interview (trained for eight months, chicken breasts, vegetables, no salt, no sauce), Clouds; we think Rain did a nice job in it, all things considered (bright lights, cameras, hoards of Americans watching him, and an American interviewer though he wasn’t English-fluent… how nerve-wracking and scary).  The movie clips are good, too.

People were really hard on Rain during that whole battery of English interviews he did when Ninja Assassin premiered, when what they should have done was try to put themselves in his place.  He could have kept himself distant from us by insisting on an interpreter; instead he challenged himself and did the best he could with what he had. How many other celebs would have dared do that?

MBLAQ’s “Y” music video.

•May 17, 2010 • 10 Comments

As broadcast today on GomTV.  I like it.  It pushes MBLAQ further into a more mature arena, which is exactly what the group needs, in my humble opinion.  And the content is true to life—this kind of thing happens more than we like to acknowledge.  But I admit, I was shocked at first to see the gun and to realize the implications in an MBLAQ MV.  They went there, and it certainly got my attention, which means they’ve done their job.  But what the heck are the Korean censors and TV broadcasters going to do to it?

So… what do you all think?  — Stephe ^@@^

‘Hip Song’ & ‘As I Told You’: Fashion similarities.

•May 16, 2010 • 1 Comment

K Bites 5/16/2010 — Singer Rain’s follow-up hit ‘Hip Song’ stage gathers interests from netizens with many who commented on how similar it is as compared to the late singer Kim SeongJae’s ‘As I told You’ performances.

Rain had performed the song ‘Hip Song’ as his followup hit on Mnet M!Countdown, KBS Music Bank and MBC Music Core this week. And for his performance on M!Countdown and Music Core, there were many who pointed out the close similiarities of the outfit concepts as compared to Kim SeongJae ‘So To Speak’ performances.

The hockey costume fashion and the sunglasses, as pointed out by many netizens, is similar to that of the concept of ‘As I Told You’ by Kim SeongJae in 1995….

(source: Newsen)

» You can read this post in its entirety, and compare additional pictures and videos of Rain and Kim Seong-Jae, on the K Bites site HERE.

Rain has always paid tribute to his idols by showcasing some form of their specialties in his own work, and who doesn’t?  That could even be why he slicked his hair back that first performance.  If this is indeed part of what Rain is doing with the boxing gig, giving a shout-out to a fallen performer, then how thoughtful of him.  It’s kind of cool to see Rain’s and Seong-Jae’s videos side by side like this, and the similarities.  Surely Seong-Jae’s longtime fans appreciate being taken back down Memory Lane… ?  — Stephe ^@@^

Rain listed among final nominees for MTV Movie Awards.

•May 16, 2010 • 2 Comments

KBS GLOBAL 5/14/2010 — World star Rain has been included in the final list of nominees for the “Biggest Badass Star” category of the 2010 MTV Movie Awards that will be held in the US on June 6.

MTV’s spokesperson said on May 13 that Rain, who appeared in the Hollywood movie “Ninja Assassin,” was chosen as one of the final five nominees for “Biggest Badass Star” along with Angelina Jolie, Channing Tatum, Sam Worthington, and Chris Pine.

MTV Movie Awards will be given in a total of twelve categories and the nominees and the final winner will be decided on completely by viewer voting without additional input by a panel of judges.

The viewer voting will be conducted until June 5, which is the day before the awards ceremony, on the event’s official webpage (http://movieawards.mtv.com).

For this year’s awards, the movie “The Hangover” has been nominated in six categories, which makes it the movie nominated for the most number of awards, and “New Moon” and “Avatar“ have also been nominated in five categories each.

Rain on Open Concert.

•May 16, 2010 • 1 Comment

KBS1’s Open Concert was finally broadcast today (not that it was delayed or anything, we were just eager to see it).  Rain was Ebony-blinging, and right away, something about his face seemed off—  No falsies.  Eyeliner yes, but no lashes.  Drats!  But that’s okay, no problem, for whatever reason he dropped that part of the Love Song staging (probably because he went straight into Hip Song without leaving the stage), and as much as I love them, I’ll let him do his thing.  Every little thing he does gets enough complaints from fans already.  Every little thing.

If you recall, Clouds, this is the show where Rain verbally connects with the crowd, does Hip Song in Love Song attire (doesn’t that dark shirt look luscious against his skin?), and seems so relaxed and content.  The shots of the fans are so cute; they are going out of their everloving minds.  It’s really enjoyable to watch.  So have fun.  — Stephe ^@@^

Rain goes “mecha” on Inkigayo.

•May 16, 2010 • 6 Comments

Behold, Clouds, Rain’s fourth Hip Song staging for this week, broadcast on SBS Inkigayo today, the 16th.  The Korean flag did not appear… so that may mean that he has plans for it (along with different staging?) in this upcoming week.  We shall see.  What did appear, to my utter delight, was a crisp, clean, and really cool Mazinger shirt.  Ha. 🙂

My brothers and I were » mecha fans way back in the day, and still are.  (When the » Mazinger マジンガ series came from Japan to the US, it used the name Tranzor Z.)  So not only did I get to enjoy watching our Ji-Hoon move and groove, I also got to revisit the early start of my love affair with anime.  Thanks, Rain!

RAINY DAY Season 2, episode 15.

•May 15, 2010 • 2 Comments

Asia broadcast 5/15.  We continue our journey from last week, with Rain still high above the streets of Seoul, braving frostbite and the elements by stripping down specifically for our viewing pleasure.  Poor thing… he had to do so many takes (probably due to bad shots, the shirt getting tangled in his hands, etc.) that after a while he seemed to just not bother going for a parka anymore.  He was probably good and numb.  Whoa, wait a minute… is that lead dancer/choreographer Jeong Sung-Tak (one of the 7 Rainmakers , who has been performing with Rain since before debut) at minute 3:11?  Wow, hey there, fellow. 🙂

And then we go down to the streets of Seoul at night to shoot the… uh-oh… the infamous traffic violation scene!  *looking around frantically for KBS watchdogs*  Hurry up and get the shot, Rain.  Just get the shot!  Run!  (Listen to that wind whip around.  Now we know how he looked so anguished in the MV—it was like standing on a frozen tundra and no amount of fit-throwing warmed him up in the least.  The man was a human popsicle.)  Enjoy, Clouds!  — Stephe ^@@^

Rain at charity concert “Love Request.”

•May 15, 2010 • 4 Comments

Today at 6 PM (May 15th), Rain participated in KBS1’s charity concert Love Request (“All of you belong to one family in Korea”), and news source Daily Economy reports that the event took place at Hanyang University’s Olympic Gym in Seoul.  Many other singers, in addition to Rain, were there to participate as well.  (Thanks to rain bird and Rain Europe for this information.)

Rain and Crew looked pretty foxy, didn’t they?  Gosh, his voice… just so rich and smooth.  I can’t throw my shirt up in this suit, but I sure can loosen this tie for ya, girl. Ha.  And who knew Hip Song could be done well in slick street shoes?  That head mic seemed to be bugging him… probably didn’t fit as well as his usual one.  All in all, nicely done.  — Stephe ^@@^

And the crowd screamed, “Jung Ji-Hoon!”

•May 15, 2010 • 2 Comments

Hip Song’s third staging this week was on MBC’s Music Core today, the 15th.  And to some, it might look like the exact same performance… but a Cloud can see that it is not.  Whereas Rain got rid of his leg lacings yesterday (Music Bank, the 14th), the Crew were all rid of theirs too today.  He also ditched the white sports shirt to go more colorful (I miss the red and black though, from M!Countdown on the 13th, that was kickin’), and his eyes are chilling behind some RayBan-type specs.  And he eased up on doing a split (I don’t blame him there really, that’s got to be rough on your crotch every single day, gah).  The fans were loud—haha.  I don’t blame them.  I’ll never get tired of seeing Rain perform Hip Song.  It’s at the top of my exercise regimen, and Terri’s too.  Talk about burning off some calories.

This week’s final stage should be Inkigayo on Sunday.  (I wonder when he’s going to show the South Korean flag… and how?  Hmm.)  — Stephe ^@@^ 5:38 am EST

Speculation: Will we see Rain next year on Stop & Bap?

•May 15, 2010 • 2 Comments

Again, we repeat—the story concerning this new series tentatively titled “Stop and Bap Korea,” slated for broadcast sometime in 2011, is true, but Rain appearing on this show is only speculation as there are many “exciting Korean singers and performers” about.  But wouldn’t it be great!  And it would certainly make sense, with him and Kim Yu-Na being food envoys now, that one of them would participate in this.  Ah well… we can only hope, and watch this show, which looks very interesting on its own merits, when the time comes.

Hanopolis 5/15/2010 (Korea) — You’ll have to wait a while but next January 2011, PBS will air a 13-episode documentary on Korean food in the mode of “Spain … on the road again” featuring chef Mario Batali and actress Gwyneth Paltrow. The series is tentatively titled, ‘Stop and Bap Korea’ and produced by Frappe Productions in collaboration with the Visit Korea Committee, according to Korea Herald…

“Over the course of four months, which includes some filming in the United States, Pinksy and crew plan to dine their way through the vast culinary riches of Korea from Seoul to Andong to Jeju Island.  “Both Korean and Hollywood celebrities are slated to take part in this epicurean journey. Asked to drop some Hallyu names, Pinksy said there would be an ‘exciting Korean singer and performer’ (Official Food Envoy, Rain?) and a Korean golfer in the mix (Michelle Wie?).  “The episodes will be ‘broken down by recipe’ and will cover everything from street to temple to ceremonial food. Naturally, kimchi and stews will be a part of the show….

Allkpop 5/14/2010 — The King of Kpop Rain returns to Music Bank this week with yet another powerful performance of his latest dance track Hip Song!

Although Rain hasn’t been in the spotlight for long since his comeback, he has already dominated the music scene! Who can blame him with his smooth dance moves and ripped out body! And let’s hope that he keeps on making more and more appearances on variety shows!….
