The secret to Rain’s ultra-fine physique.

•May 14, 2010 • 5 Comments

Asian source Osen News’s latest article states that Korean food is the reason Rain is in such great shape.

Back on May 10th, the O’live TV Channel’s news team met with K-celebs Rain, Jung Woo-Sung, Lee Seo-Jin, fashionista Kim Sung-Soo, Seo In-Young, Han Go-Eun, and others at a huge birthday celebration for Korean restaurant Bibigo (CJ Food Company).  Rain is quoted as staying, “Vegetarian dishes seem to be the doorway to health.  It is better for you to eat a lot more vegetables, like low-calorie Bibimbap, than meat dishes.”

(Thanks to rain bird and Rain Europe for this information.)

And of course, it is not without incident.  Host Jae-Seok’s (whose wife just gave birth in April to a baby boy—congratulations!) hilarious sidekick Myung-Su did a real number on Rain with Love Song, while my absolute favorite Korean comedienne Bong-Sun parodied Lee Hyo-Ri, common practice when it comes to welcoming guests to the show.  Heheh.

The last time I personally saw Rain on » Happy Together a few years ago really had me in stitches.  I couldn’t stop laughing at the look on his face when Bong-Sun came out and Rainism’d him.  And Myung-Su parodying Kim Jong Kook was just the icing on the cake.  Later in the show, Rain giving his Let’s Imitate Rain lessons was adorable and funny as all get out.  I thought for sure host Jae-Seok was having the Big Ooooo during “Escaping The Sun.”  This kind of stuff is just priceless.  Enjoy, Clouds!  — Stephe ^@@^

•May 13, 2010 • 2 Comments

This footage is of Rain’s second fanmeet, at Myung-Dong’s Music Korea, around 4 PM on May 12th.  Security should have never let him get out of that van there—were they insane? There wasn’t even a clear path to the door, and Rain got roughed up more than we thought he did.  Once inside, he looked like he wanted to punch somebody out, though he never would have done that, of course.  His shoulder was bothering him.  But he concentrated on enjoying the fans, and they certainly enjoyed his presence.

The fanmeet turned out nicely, all things considered.

We’re all crazy about Rain, but fans, please—do you really want him or other fans getting hurt?  Control yourselves!  And as far as Security goes—you’re in the doghouse right now. 😦  — Stephe ^@@^

…and the Hip Song comeback stages begin.

**ETA 5/16/2010: UPDATE » ‘Hip Song’ & ‘As I Told You’: Fashion similarities. A tribute to his fallen idol back in the day, DEUX legend Kim Sung Jae. ❤ ^@@^

ORIGINAL POST ↓

As he promised to do, Rain has pulled another rabbit out of his hat: a new style, revised choreography, revised theme (sports meets urban hip hop) and new hair.

This Hip Song comeback stage from today’s Mnet M!Countdown broadcast really lives up to Rain’s wish to go “back to the basic.”  The last time we saw boxing gloves was during debut year (2002) when he came back from “Bad Guy” with his second single “Instead of Saying Goodbye,” off of his Vol. 1 n001 album, and completely shot to stardom.  That old performance was absolutely precious, and today’s Hip Song stage harkened back to that—it was simply irresistable.  Brilliant.  I love the boxing attire and slicked back, super spy hair.  (What a look.  He should wear his hair like this for Runaway!)  Any predictions as to what theme his next performance will take, Clouds?  Of course, it’ll be amazing…

Well, so far (since April) Rain has made good on his vow to reinvent himself and revolutionize us.  — Stephe

As we understand it… this was Rain’s second fanmeet stop of the day today, and took place around 4 PM (the earlier stop was around 2:30, and the last one should happen around 7).  Heavens, this is not good!  Understandably the crowd was ecstatic to see him, but some fans could have really gotten hurt, and it’s a wonder Rain left the place in one piece (the underside of his arm looks bruised where somebody tried to yank it off).  Talk about scaring the crap out of him.  C’mon security—you’ve got to make better calls than this.  If something isn’t safe, it isn’t safe.  Go to Plan B!  — ^@@^

Rain on the O’live Channel.

•May 12, 2010 • Leave a Comment

Rain has been named the O’live Channel’s May Style Icon.  (His “Rain on Trip” documentary in the Alps last year was also televised by that channel.)  Enjoy this, his recent interview on O’live.

(video courtesy of ratoka / brief translation by rain bird @rain-eu.)

0:27~0:31
Rain : Hello, O’live family.

This is singer Rain who’s been chosen as May’s Style Icon by O’live channel.

0:43~0:57
Q: What is the biggest appeal of this album?

Rain : It is the aesthetics of temperance in the silence [the beauty of saying something with a whisper rather than a shout, achieving an effect through subtlety and restraint.  —Stephe ^@@^].  Title track ‘Love Song’ which has a 4 beat rhythm may be a Korean style ballad, but its powerful element is the understated choreography and clothes.

0:05~1:17
Q: What is the difference between actor ‘Jung Ji-Hoon’ and singer Rain, in terms of style?

Rain : In comparison with singer Rain who likens himself to a fish caught at sea, actor ‘Jung Ji-Hoon’ may be compared to a farmed fish. I’m aware of myself of being a singer, while much remains to be done as an actor. I like them both.

1:26~1:32
Q : What’s your definition? What is your own style?

Rain : Complete freedom to do as I wish.

1:33~1:42
Rain : “Michael Jackson and my father are role models for me, on stage and in my life, respectively.

1:49
Q: What’s your plan in 2010?

Rain : Now I’m active with my special album released this year, and thank many of you for giving ‘Love Song’ your love. I plan to follow up with second single ‘Hip Song’, and then I’ll appear in a drama.

I ask for your continued support and love.

Thank you.

His way.

Olympic figure skating champion named Korean “food envoy”

YONHAP News Agency 5/12/2010 (Seoul) — Olympic figure skating champion Kim Yu-na has been named South Korea’s new “food envoy,” a role that involves promoting traditional Korean dishes around the world, the government said Wednesday.

The farm ministry said Kim, who won the women’s figure skating gold at the Vancouver Games in February, officially received the position at the four-day long 2010 Seoul International Food Industry Exhibition that kicked off earlier in the day.  She is expected to work alongside South Korean singer and actor Rain to generate foreign interest in Korean cuisine. Rain was tapped as the country’s first food envoy in August 2009.

Allkpop 5/12/2010 — Rain who is currently in the midst of his new album promotions, held three back-to-back fan signing events this afternoon on the 12th at separate locations for fans who bought his Back to the Basic album…

…Things went on smoothly for his first fan signing where he wore a mesh-like outfit coupled with sandals. But things got slightly out of control in the second fan signing as the security failed to hold back the swarm of people when he arrived in his vehicle….

» You can read allkpop’s post in its entirety and see their gallery of B2TB signing event images HERE.

Things do look scary when he’s up against the van, and when he’s holding his arm… but our Ji-Hoon is resilient, and hopefully if he was hurt it was only momentary.  He certainly carried on with the rest of the day like a champ (as always).  He is a big boy and he can handle these types of things…  — Stephe ^@@^

Go to MTV and give Rain your vote!

•May 12, 2010 • 31 Comments

It is finally time, Clouds, to do what we’ve been itching to do—get over to MTV.com and give Rain a HUGE thumbs-up for his superb portrayal of “Raizo” in Ninja Assassin.  Online voting started at noon EST today and will go until June 5th.  Let’s help our Ji-Hoon get what he so richly deserves: the » 2010 MTV Movie Awards title of Biggest Badass Star.  Anyone who has the sheer strength of will to transform himself from stage performer into a zero-percent body fat killing machine, and can hold his own against Sho-sama (a shinto jinen martial arts master and head of his own institute, who has been in practice for 57 years) in any capacity should wear that crown for life.  Seriously.

» MTV’s voting page for Biggest Badass Star is now up, and right HERE.  The Rain clip they chose is of that unique and ultra-cool Ninja chase through Berlin traffic, something we haven’t seen in a ninja movie until now.  We like.

» The “About The Show” page has also been updated, and states: Final nominees are now in! Vote for your favorites nominees to help determine who should go home with the coveted Golden Popcorn. Which is exactly what we’ve been waiting to see… FINAL nominees.  Not what has been posted there before today, which was:  And now it’s our turn to tally up your choices. Once your nominee frontrunners are established, the winner voting pool will open on May 12… Which meant:  MTV was still counting votes.  And: Voting for nominees is closed. But don’t let that stop you from browsing through some of this year’s eligible actors. Which meant we could look through the people who were “eligible” for the final list.  That page full of actors was not the final list.  (We saw how some fans tried to explain that to other fans here and there, but were ignored.)

Up until today, there was nowhere on the site that said final.  There was nowhere on the Internet where MTV themselves had said final, nor anywhere that MTV had been directly quoted or sourced, just other sites, other media, other people.  Which is why we didn’t put the “Rain and Lee Byung Hyun officially nominated for MTV Movie Awards” story here—that wasn’t what the site said at all.  But good grief, that story was everywhere you looked, and poor Byung Hyun is the one who suffers for it in the end because as everyone can see now, like Rain, he was “eligible” but not officially nominated yet (though he darn well should have gotten in for Best Fight… are they kidding us, him not being in his final five for Storm Shadow? WTH?)

Someone “in the know,” when the official five Badass nominees were chosen, probably let the cat out of the bag this week, and J.Tune may have gotten a call for a statement.  Thus, their recent announcement that Rain was indeed a finalist.  We are speculating here, but that is certainly a possibility.

In any case, things have worked out wonderfully for Rain.  He is indeed the first Korean national to be nominated for an MTV Movie Award, and we are so stoked!  This is where our support becomes critical, Clouds, so let’s do our best.  Let’s help Rain to victory and bring him to Los Angeles.  Aja fighting!

Rain and Hee-Chul… only one year apart in age.

•May 11, 2010 • 2 Comments

K Bites has put up a terrific pic—their Photo of the Day, showing Rain and Super Junior’s Kim Hee-Chul at a recent radio show and how, though they were born only a year apart, they look dissimilar in age.  Rain looks older and Hee-Chul looks a lot younger.  (Perhaps that’s because of the more mature look Rain has adopted since Legend of Rainism.  “Raizo” and Hee-Chul would look more similar, I think… yes.  Or “Taejo” and Hee-Chul.  What do you think?)

Recently back with the album ‘Back To The Basic’ and dominating music charts and music shows charts, singer Rain will be holding a fanmeet.

Coming 12th May, he will be meeting fans in Seoul MyungDong Music Korea, YongSang Children Park ShinNara, KangNam Hot Tracks. The idea of the fanmeet was brought up by Rain himself during the recent meetings with staff after seeing the great success with this album even though the music industry is said to be in recession.

Have you heard of Arirang TV’s M-Wave?

•May 11, 2010 • 8 Comments

We’ve just gotten wind of it.  Pretty darned interesting.

Arirang Global TV (and Radio) first began its broadcasts back in 1999, and quickly came to America in its trek across the world.  (We don’t have it here in Atlanta yet; it seems to be mostly available in the western US right now.)  M-Wave is a relatively new venture that, for the first time, connects international viewers with the world of Kpop music charts.  In other words, global fans can vote.

» You can read all about M-Wave HERE, on their new site, which is still being built. According to the show info, our very own Thunder (MBLAQ) will be celeb host along with Krystal of girl group F(X).  There will be stage performances, SKYPE talk, a weekly show, and other goodies (a photo on the site suggests that, during the second show shooting, Thunder did a special Hip Song.  Who wouldn’t want to see that?  Wow.)

What excites us the most right now is this: » the global voting chart.  As you can see, our Rain is currently in the 2nd and 3rd spots, right underneath SuperJunior.  Global fans can make their voices heard right now with that wonderful VOTE button.  Ha!  » M-Wave also has a Twitter.

So join the global movement, Clouds!  We talk all the time about wanting to be recognized the way Asian fans are; here is one way to accomplish that and get goodies in the bargain.  Read the rules, sign up at Arirang TV, and be a part of something worthwhile.  (The sign-up process was pretty straightforward and only took me five minutes.  Easy.  Voting was even easier!)

Support our Ji-Hoon and Thunder.  — Stephe ^@@^

Korean Insight 4/28/2010 — Celebrities are no longer mere models for game promotion. Rather, they have been created into actual game characters that run through the game. Korea’s Asian pop star “Rain” had been first to be embedded as a character in the popular FPS game “Sudden Attack,” in December 2008. Rain’s game character has reaped about $210 million in sales, which projected the beginning of a new trend in the gaming industry.

Following up, popular Korean boy group “Big Bang,” which includes five characters, did even better with $280 million in sales within 9 months of character release in Sudden Attack. Girl group “2NE1” also in Sudden Attack, had $210 million in sales like Rain….

» You can read Yunho Chung’s post in its entirety on his Korean Insight blog HERE.  This is an excellent site for keeping up with all things tech: telecommunications, Korea’s online gaming, the digital landscape, hi-def electronics, the works.  (Incidentally, the doings and strategies of several of Rain’s endorsers—Samsung, LG, SKT—also come to the fore.)

Rain’s character has raked in $210 mil in sales?  WOW.
