Fashion festival to light up Gangnam

In early October, the affluent Gangnam District in southern Seoul will transform into a huge festival venue as it hosts the 2011 Gangnam Fashion Festival with no extravagance spared.

From Oct. 1 through 9 centered at COEX the celebrations will not only include fashion and shopping but also various sports and cultural events, including a concert featuring hallyu star Rain.

Special promotions and sales are expected to attract foreign travelers, especially Chinese tourists timed with the occasion of the country’s national holiday.

“We may be able to say that Gangnam is already a special fashion zone, as we have 463 fashion-related companies, taking up 31.2 percent of the district’s total sales outlets,” the district Mayor Shin Yeon-hee said in a briefing in Seoul, Wednesday.

A fashion market will be set up at COEX between 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. from Oct. 1 to 3, offering discounts on clothes by 75 domestic and international brands. Part of the proceeds will be donated to UNICEF to send clothes to children in Africa.

On the first day, an opening ceremony is planned at COEX with a concert by the Gangnam Symphony Orchestra at 7 p.m. In a rookie contest to follow, college students will showcase their designs and winners will get the opportunity to work as interns at fashion companies.

More programs are prepared for the second day, including a “cosplay” (costume play) contest where participants wear homemade costumes of comic or video game characters, a hanbok fashion show, and a wedding fashion show. Trend Collection in Gangnam will be a venue for designers based in Gangnam.

On Oct. 3, makeup artists will present performances combining makeup, hair design and body painting. It will be followed by traditional costume fashion shows by Gangnam’s sister cities _ Chaoyang District of Beijing, Tongyeong of South Gyeongsang Province and Yeongju of North Gyeongsang Province. Male models from 70 countries will also present traditional clothes representing their respective nations.

The festival mood will reach a peak on the last day on Oct. 9 when K-pop star and actor Rain’s concert will take place at a special stage near Dosan Park. During the concert from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Dosan Ave. near the park will be closed.

“Rain, the publicity ambassador to Gangnam district, will perform his last concert before beginning his military service on Oct. 11. We are full of appreciation,” Shin said.

She said China’s Union Pay estimated about 15,000 Chinese visitors will come to Korea during the national holiday there.

During the festival, department stores will hold regular autumn sales while 137 other shops will present up to 50 percent discounts. Hotels, restaurants, galleries and theaters will also offer sales.

Other cultural events have been prepared in conjunction with the festival. On Oct. 3, an International Peace Marathon Festival will take place with the district’s publicity ambassador, actor Park Joong-hoon, and former marathon runner Lee Bong-ju participating.

Between Oct. 4 and 13, 17 galleries in Cheongdam-dong will hold a special exhibition, while college students majoring in arts will sell their works on Rodeo Street in Apgujeong-dong on Oct. 8.

Well, he won’t technically be fighting, but for the sake of this article, we’ll pretend that he’s courageously defending our land and leading his fellow soldiers into the victories of war! Oh Rain, you are our hero!

On a less dramatic note, Rain has just wrapped up the last shows of his final tour before heading into the military service. The superstar took to his Twitter to thank his fans for all the love, “For 10 years we held about 120 concerts, thank you for everyone that came. I love you.”

Rain will begin serving in the military on October 11. We’ll miss you, our beloved Bi!

On September 24 and 25, legendary singer Rain held the two final shows of his Rain: The Best Show nationwide concert tour — his last tour before his obligatory two-year enlistment in the military, which begins October 11.

Over 10,000 fans from all over Asia, Europe, and the rest of the world gathered at Seoul’s Bangyidong Olympic Gymnastics Hall to see their favorite world star put on his most passionate performances yet. With a packed set of Clouds’ favorite songs, opening with “Hip Song” and ending with a spectacular encore of “Instead of Saying Goodbye” (how fitting!), hours flew by like seconds and tears filled the stadium at the thought of two whole years without Rain onstage.

WOW, Clouds. All sorts of stuff went down last week—the end of Rain’s Korea national tour, his personal October 11 enlistment announcement, a zillion interviews for the Media, et cetera. And he’s not done. He still has the Disabled People’s Culture & Art benefit show on the 29th, a free outdoor concert in Gangnam-gu (the district in Southern Seoul where he’s an honorary ambassador) coming up on October 9, there is talk of new music he might be releasing, and there is the press conference last week—that was canceled at the last minute because of his killer schedule—that still might take place. Or not.

Just keep holding on to your hats, everybody. The Rain Train is still on a fast track. 🙂

HanCinema 9/24/2011 —

[TALK OF THE TOWN] Rain wraps his final concert tour

Rain wrapped up his national concert tour before starting his 22-month military service. The 29-year-old is scheduled to join the military on October 11.

Rain will perform one more free concert in Gangnam, southern Seoul, on October 9, but last weekend was the official end of his national concert tour “Rain: The Best Show”, which started in August and ended yesterday at Olympic Gymnasium in eastern Seoul.

“I think joining the military will give me time to look back at myself”, Rain told the press after his concert on Saturday. “[The military] can be physically challenging, but I expect it will make me stronger mentally”.

Rain revealed Friday on his Web site that he would undergo basic tRaining in Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi, but said that it has not yet been determined where he will serve.

The entertainer, who featured in Hollywood films like “Ninja Assassin” (2009) and “Speed Racer” (2008), said after the concert that he hasn’t slept well lately, not because he is about to join the military, but because he is thinking about his post-military future, which could include a greater focus on the American market.

“It was hard for me to be overseas as a man who hadn’t finished his military service”, Rain said. “There were many offers from Hollywood, but I missed lot of opportunities because of my status. Therefore, I think I really need to finish my military service first”.

The singer-actor is expected to unveil a new song before joining the military next month.

The Korea Herald 9/25/11 — By Claire Lee (dyc@heraldm.com)

Rain completes last concert tour before military service

Rain on Sunday finished his last nation-wide concert tour ahead of entering military service on Oct. 11.

The last set of concerts, titled “Rain the Best Show,” was held at the Gymnastics Stadium in Olympic Park, Seoul on Saturday and Sunday, each attracting more than 10,000 fans.

Prior to the Seoul concerts, the hallyu star announced on Friday that he will be placed at a military unit in Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi Province, next month, to receive basic training for his 22-month-long mandatory military service. The K-pop entertainer said he does not know where he will be placed after basic training.

Rain, whose real name is Jung Ji-hoon, is considered one of the most successful Korean celebrities both at home and abroad. The 29-year-old has released seven albums and 19 singles since his debut in 2002. He also debuted as an actor in 2003 through a local TV drama series, “Sangdoo! Let’s Go to School!” and also starred in KBS’ hit series shows “Full House” (2004) and “A Love to Kill” (2005).

After acting for his first Korean film, “I’m a Cyborg, But That’s OK” in 2006, Rain gained fame in the United States after appearing in American films “Speed Racer” (2008) and “Ninja Assassin” (2009).

Rain is scheduled to give a free street concert in southern Seoul on Oct. 9. It will be his last public appearance before joining the army.

Rain Holds His Last Concerts Before Military Service

Singer Rain held a touching performance at his “Rain: The Best Show” concert. His fans held tears back as they watched him passionately perform for them at his last concert before his obligatory military service. The thought of not being able to see the sexy Hallyu star for two long years brought tears to their eyes.

On September 24 at Bangyi Dong Olympic Gymnastics Hall in Seoul, Rain held the 2011 “Rain: The Best Show” concert. Because it is his last concert for a long time, fans were ecstatic and overjoyed. Approximately 10,000 fans from all over Japan, China, and Korea crowded in to see him.

The performance was delayed for 20 minutes. The fans patiently waited for him, chanting “Jung Ji Hoon” and “Rain”.

Rain’s first song was “Hip Song”. Dressed up in a golden costume, he attracted all the light and attention. Afterwards, he performed dance songs “Touch Ya” and “You”. With his powerful and passionate voice, he swept the entire audience away.

After performing the songs, Rain said, “I want to thank everyone for coming to this concert. It’s a little different from the shows I’ve had in that it focuses more on the songs. I hope we can all have a great time together.”

Rain kept fans on their toes with his sexy and charming appeal. He performed “In My Bed” on a chair, (always sexy) and put his heart and soul into singing “How to Avoid the Sun” and “Only You”.

For the song “I Like You Again”, he danced with sexy female dancers to give an eye popping performance. Fans stood up as they listened to him sing “How to Avoid the Sun” and followed along as he sang the words. The singer and the audience were united as one.

Boosted up by the fans’ excitement, Rain delivered excellent fan service. One Japanese fan went up on stage and sang “My Girl” with him! She was the only person to be given a teddy bear and a bouquet of flowers as well! The others were very envious. Who wouldn’t be?

Rain also told his fans some choreography moves from “Only You” and “Fresh Woman”. They raised their left hands in the air, followed by their right hands, and danced along with him.

The last few songs of his concert made a sad ending for his fans. After singing “It’s Raining”, bursts of crying sounds came from all over the stadium. Rain had an uneasy expression as he prepared to the end the night.

He said into the microphone, “It’s been ten years since I’ve debuted. I had a lot of obstacles and difficult times. Instead of thinking, ‘Why me?’ I thought, ‘What kind of great things are going to happen in the future?’. Thanks to that, I’ve been able to get past everything through the years.” He received a round of applause.

To comfort the audience, he said, “There’s something I’ve got to say. Sometimes when I’m driving around, other cars speed ahead of me or make me slow down. Right now, it’s like that. There’s a little bit of traffic here, but before you know it, this car will be speeding along again.” (What a creative analogy.)

Even after the performance was over, fans didn’t leave. Instead, they called out “Jung Ji Hoon” and “Encore”. A few minutes later, Rain appeared back on stage. He sang “Instead of Saying Goodbye”. The lyrics “Just one small smile is enough” fit in perfectly with his situation as fans smiled throughout the stadium. Members of MBLAQ attended the concert as well to watch their teacher’s last performance.

One Chinese fan (Jin Wae Jung) said, “I came with my German friend to this concert. We had been to several Rain concerts before but this was by far the best. I’m sad that he’s leaving but I’m so happy that I could see this amazing performance before.”

On October 11, Rain will enlist in the military. He will return, like all service members, after two years. We’ll just have to patiently await our Hollywood/Hallyu superstar until then.

[ETA: Deadline Extension] [Cloud USA Project/calendar] See You Soon, Soldier: A Yellow Ribbon for Rain

~ Cloud Cover by Terri :-}, Managing Editor

[ ETA:  Hello lovely Clouds.  This is the first chance I’ve had to update the blog since our trip to SMTown’s Live World Tour New York started.  It has been a whirlwind ride and exhausting, but so much FUN.  We’ll post about our Road Trip for Rain as soon as we get home (which should be Tues. or Wed., but I didn’t want to let another day go by without letting you know that we’ve decided to EXTEND the deadline for our calendar project, so that more of you would be able to participate.

The new deadline is  November 11, 2011.

Since our plan was always to get the calendar to Rain after he has settled in with his regular unit, we think this timeline will work out just fine.  A huge thank you to those of you who have already sent us your submissions.  If you rushed to get your submission in and would like to add to it, please feel free.  Or now, maybe you’ll have time to think of that special one-liner message you’d like to share with Rain, something to make him smile, something to let him know that his Clouds are impatiently (but nicely…) waiting for his return.

Much love to you all.

Terri :-} ]

For many months now, Clouds all over the world have been sighing over rumors of final appearances and last projects in anxious anticipation of the start of Rain’s mandatory military service.  Finally, a few days ago, Rain made the announcement that his enlistment in the ROK Army would begin on October 11, 2011.

The vow a soldier makes to fight for his country—to the death, if need be—changes him and those who love him in more ways that you can ever imagine.  The separation from family and friends is lonely, physically arduous, and often life-threatening.  The experience makes you realize how tenuous ties to the other human beings in your life, and often to life itself, are.  Sometimes those ties survive the strain and sometimes they don’t.  Either way, both the soldier and the people he/she leaves behind (and to whom he/she returns) changes forever.

[interview][Eng trans] Rain on MBC News, before Best Seoul.

Rain was interviewed by MBC News yesterday, before his Best Seoul concert stop.

Jesus lord, you would think that the Man was the ONLY Korean to ever go into the military at this age, the way everybody is carrying on about it. Well, he isn’t. In fact, people have gone in LATER than this. The most important thing is that he’s serving, right? What the big flipping deal, really?

Seems to me if people don’t have a flaw to point out, they’re just not happy. Ugh! And yes, he has stamina to burn. Believe it.

Many fan clubs across Asia and the world that are devoted to South Korean singer/actor/ entertainer Rain (a.k.a. Jung JiHoon) provided rice donations for the needy outside of his RAIN The Best Show concert  in Seoul today, September 24…

…to the tune of 3.61 tons of food, total.

Wow. Way to go when it comes to following his lead and being a fine reflection of him, Rain fans!
