Revisiting 2008 & 2006: Rain covers Esquire Magazine.

Yes, it was Beginning To Rain All Over The World  when JiHoon graced the cover of Men’s Esquire back in November 2008.  As we understand it, this was around the same time he became the first Korean male on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar Korea, and » did a feature spread for Harper’s with supermodel Hye Park.

As he’d promised, he was making a comeback in S. Korea after being gone for several years filming Speed Racer and Ninja Assassin.

RAINY DAY Season 2, episode 46.

Asia broadcast 12/18.  Back to the ZEPP Tour, on our Man’s birthday!

Remember, when RAINY DAY left ZEPP some weeks ago, we had just finished up at Tokyo Hall.  Now, Rain’s on a bit of a tour of the streets of Fukuoka, Japan.  I’m not sure where he is when he turns down that alleyway, but if I know him, it’s where you can get something to eat. LOL

At ZEPP Fukuoka Hall on June 25th (his birthday), after getting ZEPP-suited up, Rain, Gori, and another Crewman — looks like SooBong from the side? — stretch their long, fine limbs before the performance, a necessary step that always results in them being absolutely fluid on stage.  You agree?  And then the entire Crew gather around their leader for a pre-show pep talk.  And they’re off to the stage.  Go get ’em, Men.  (and Women!)

The Fukuoka fans come to life as the Man and the Men are born of fire in the opener and launch into “Rainism.”  Oh, my!  I will never get tired of watching this song performed.  I’ll still be watching our Magic Feet and his Magic Stick when I’m about 90 and confined to a HoverRound.  Seriously.

Hair alert!  JiHoon hair alert at minute :51!  Enjoy it!  [ Stephe: Why do you continue to torture us in this manner?  Wae—wae?  You know what slinging your hair like that does to us, you sadist! Rain: But Stephe—it’s in the choreography.  It can’t be helped.  I don’t know what else to do!  That was what we learned in L.A. and I’m just doing what I was told. Hongshi: Eh, ‘Hoon… um, that’s the part you changed up and added in, remember?  You said it would give you more mileage.  Yeah, that’s what you said. Rain (giving Honshi the Evil Eye): Traitor! 😛 ]

(Just an aside… I hope it’s the video skipping, or the episode skipping, and not the actual music during the performance.  Hmm.)

Wow, he’s throwing around a LOT of Japanese.  And that crowd is no joke (huge and packed in there like sardines).  As expected, “It’s Raining” and “Handshake” are in Tha House.  Listen to that voice. ♥

Until next week, Rain clouds!  Will we get to see some cake in the face or cake on the head?  Heheh.

May 2010: Ninja Assassin trailer nominated for a Golden Trailer in L.A.

[Cloud USA] Oh, my.  Everyone across the Rain Blog-o-sphere was SO distracted by the Time 100 voting, Rain’s Biggest Badass nomination, and the 2010 MTV Movie Awards where he won the Badass title, that we all completely missed this.

Back in May 2010 (around the same time we were immersed in voting), official NINJA ASSASSIN TV trailer “Blood” was nominated for a 2010 Golden Trailer Award for Best Graphics TV Spot, against the movies Sherlock Holmes, Wolverine, and 500 Days of Summer.  Stiff competition indeed.  This was no joke.  The Golden Trailer Awards honors the BEST in motion picture previews every year in the U.S., and around 61 trailers were nominated in various categories for 2010.  Wow.

And at the 11th annual 2010 Golden Trailer Awards ceremony at the El-Rey Theater in L.A. on June 10, 2010 (mere days after Rain’s MTV win, when we were still reeling from that), the winners were revealed.  NINJA ASSASSIN lost to Sherlock Holmes’ very cool entry, but that’s okay because, frankly, it’s such a thrill that NA drew that kind of attention in the first place.

Honestly, we couldn’t be more proud.

Good show, JiHoon!  Did you even know about it? 😀

The Dong-A Ilbo 12/17/2010 — Lee Seung-gi appeared in the most TV ads this year

Entertainer Lee Seung-gi has appeared in the most TV commercials in Korea this year.

TVCF, the largest advertising Web portal in Korea, said Thursday that a survey found that Lee appeared in 30 ads this year, the highest for any person. Olympic figure skating champion Kim Yu-na was second with 28, pop music group Girls’ Generation third with 25 (including 13 that featured the entire group), singer Rain fourth with 21, and actresses Lee Na-young and Shin Min-a tied for fifth with 20.

On why Lee Seung-gi was the favorite among advertisers, HS Ad creative director Shim Eui-seop said, “Housewives have a strong say in spending and his hardworking image made him popular not just among consumers but also among advertisers, so he became the blue chip of advertising.”

Choi Jae-yeong, director of the CP1 division of SK Marketing & Co., said, “Many popular and well known stars often don`t get the opportunity to be on ads, but Lee Seung-gi is a proven advertising model, and is very rare in that he is loved by people from all walks of life.”

As for second-place Kim Yu-na, Kim Cheong-hun, deputy general manager of Innocean, said, “She was beloved by advertisers since she had enjoyed both challenge and a success story with a good performance, dancing, appearance and star quality. In particular, many sporting events starting from the Winter Olympics this year made her an outstanding model for advertising.”

How much the stars are paid for endorsements is hard to know. Depending on conditions, the amount can differ significantly but the top performers are paid around 1 billion won (868,000 U.S. dollars) for a one-year contract.

“Superstars” can receive 300 million to 500 million won (260,420 to 434,030 dollars), those who star in dramas 100 million to 300 million won (86,800 to 260,420 dollars), and lesser stars under 100 million (86,800 dollars).

The advertising industry considers Kim Yu-na, actress Kim Tae-hee, actor Jang Dong-gun and Rain among the top celebrity endorsers in Korea.

[*ETA 7 pm EST Tracking Update: Rain’s Christmas box has passed through Memphis, Tennessee and Anchorage, Alaska today, and is now on a plane over the Pacific Ocean.  Give it a mental “push”, everybody.  Help guide it on its way! ^@@^]

And obviously Rain has been a really good boy this year — not naughty but nice (well, not too naughty anyway, we’ll give him a break LOL) — because Santa is on his way to Seoul with a Christmas box from the Cloud USA community.

Hot-diggity-dog…!

Not only are U.S. fans and states (including Puerto Rico) represented, but world fans as well.  There are gifts and/or holiday greetings from Australia, France, and Turkey, for instance.  Rain already knows that his fandom stretches far and wide across the planet; this Christmas, the proof of that will definitely be in the pudding.  In addition to the cards and gifts, we’ve included a handsome black binder that’s very shiny and very elegant, and contains Cloud USA community member lists (forum, blog subscribers, upcoming meet-up groups, etc.) and holiday emails all inside of it, printed out on white linen paper for him.  Taking a picture of every single thing by itself would have taken forever, so we didn’t, particularly the binder contents and emails (which made no sense anyway because everyone has a copy of their own email).  Getting the box properly packed and out on time was the most important thing, as we didn’t know what kind of delays it might face in getting to S.Korea.

Aren’t y’all excited?  By the time we finished the wrapping party, Terri’s living room looked like a bomb had gone off!

When a freak ice storm whipped up Wednesday and trapped us in our houses, we experienced our first moments of real trepidation.  But things cleared up the next day, and Terri and I personally shipped the box out ourselves.  It was put on a plane to South Korea last night around 10 pm, and should get there on the 22nd (we’re tracking it).  Our beloved overseas contacts are excitedly standing by in wait for its arrival.

Thank you to everyone who sent something for Rain’s Christmas Box, and to everyone who wanted to send something but couldn’t.  Rain’s fans are the best fans in the world.  And he knows it. 😉

A difference in cultures: More 2010 KBS Drama Awards voting.

In addition to » the initial International voting going on for the 2010 KBS Drama Awards, there is now voting for Best (male) Actor and Best Couple, and we want to give you cloud Scorpiola’s tips to make that voting happen for you.  (Thanks for your thoughtfulness in gathering this info, Scorpiola!)

And in all fairness, I feel that I must also bring up the point that this is where two very different cultures come together — the U.S., and South Korea — and may or may not mesh.

Whereas there, everything is done through personal ID numbers and that information seems freely shared, in the States we have been conditioned from birth by our government to never never EVER give out our social security numbers and personal IDs due to the identity theft that runs rampant here in America.  So it is quite understandable that American fans will feel GREAT trepidation when urged to give out our personal information anywhere, much less overseas.

So, fans who are cool with this (and some of you will be), please go and vote for Rain and NaYoung!  Give Fugitive your full support!  (To our knowledge, the KBS sites are very secure when it comes to members’ personal info. Fans in the U.S. have been members for years and never encountered a problem.)  Fans who are dismayed at the thought of giving out their ID… don’t be.  It’s your right not to.

This Rain odyssey we’re all on isn’t just about us understanding and accepting South Koreans and their culture… it is also about them understanding and accepting us.  This is what you call a two-way street.  We are all what we are.

Close Up video: Ninja Assassin Blu-Ray Steelbook and movie review.

An Australian Steelbook aficionado reviews all of the cover art of the German edition of the NINJA ASSASSIN Blu-Ray Steelbook, and tells you what to expect in the movie in this interesting video.  Save for a few minor points, the guy was pretty darned pleased.  A big thumbs up. 😀

Community member Marisara posted this piece of Legend of Rainism goodness in the Cloud USA forum this week.  And although my favorite BoY performance was at LoR Saitama, and Terri’s was at LoR Seoul, this right here, from January 30th, is definitely a study in just how fluidly Rain can move his body (even fully clothed).

Watching it, I get the feeling he was really hyped up with it being the last show of the tour (until Yoyogi, that is).  He seems to be going for broke, from start to finish.  Hahaha!

Systems analysts are working to stabilize the Official Cloud Rain fan club website.  A firewall was installed in the process, which may be why some of you are still having problems.  Just hang in there!  The plan is that as soon as the site is fixed, the membership drive for the new 8th Cloud may finally commence in a few short weeks.  As soon as we receive confirmation of the drive from overseas, we will bang the drum.

Team Cloud: A tip from…

Runaway/Fugitive: Plan B is now also on Hulu!

Back in May, when we first heard that DramaFever.com and Hulu were hooking up, that was such a rush.  Then a few months ago, when DramaFever managed to score The Fugitive: Plan B and began posting the episodes (under Runaway: Plan B), I dared to hope against hope… but didn’t count my chickens.

And now there is yet another way to watch JiWoo, which is exciting because even though the KBS 2TV air dates finished up last week and Fugitive is at the end of its first run in S.Korea, we can simply make our own “reruns” by watching the show on all the other official venues out there.  You feel me?

Oh, hal-le-lu-ia…!

*Please NOTE: At this time, Hulu is a U.S. service only.  However, they have begun the arduous task of trying to clear the rights for their shows and films in other geographic regions, and will be worldwide sometime in the future.

» The May 19th PRWeb article, DramaFever brings Asia’s Top TV hit series to Hulu, is HERE for your reading pleasure.

» Hulu’s DramaFever search page is HERE, compliments of Divalcious.  Just select “Runaway: Plan B” from the Show pull-down menu, and you’re in business.  (Episodes are English-subbed.)

VIEWING PRIMER (as of 12/15/2010):

Hulu (online) has the first 10 Fugitive episodes subbed and up for free viewing.

DramaFever.com (online) has 17 Fugitive episodes subbed and up — #s 1-16 are free; #17 is only available for paid viewers, but will be made free in a few days.  You can also access DramaFever’s direct episodes on their Runaway: Plan B Facebook page.

KBSWORLDi (online) has all 20 Fugitive episodes and the Fugitive: Plan B Special up for viewing — #s 1-20 are subbed; the Special should be subbed before the week is out.  Viewing is paid only, but the fee is very affordable.

KBS World (offline, global television) is airing Fugitive episodes weekly on local cable and satellite TV networks in the U.S. and across the world.  The series should be about in the middle of its broadcast run.

Yes, fans, there’s still a lot of Running & Running going on, so don’t despair!

For Rain fans outside of the U.S. and Canada, we’re sorry that with the exception of KBS World global television, there aren’t more options for you as well.  But we are keeping our ear to the ground for word on anything that might help the situation.  You’re not forgotten, and we certainly don’t fault you for going other routes.

The 2010 KBS Drama Awards adds fan votes to their event.

Remember our » previous post on the upcoming 2010 KBS Drama Awards and their two fan events that will carry through until December 20th? Well, fans, something new has been added to the Drama Awards page.

» Select your favorite actor/actress/Drama of the year 2010~!

Look underneath Event 1 and Event 2, and click on the Vote button there.  This will pop up a 2010 KBS Drama Awards Ranking Questions box, with nominees for 1) Who you would like to be your tour guide around Korea, 2) Who has the most typical Korean look, and 3) Your choice for the most impressive KBS drama of 2010.  *THINGS TO NOTE: You can only vote for an actor OR an actress in each box — each box will only record ONE click.  Aaaand… don’t forget to include your country at the end, for statistical purposes. (The U.S. is included in the drop-down box 😀 )

The site only let me vote once (which is fine by me… there’s a lot of voting to do these days!).  And there is no registration at all in order to vote.

So… aja! Let’s support Rain and The Fugitive: Plan B.  (Although in my opinion, Rain does not come across as “typical” in any way, shape, or form.) 🙂
