Rain and renowned cellist Jan Vogler, in Dresden, Germany. What a wonderful sight. The meshing of two of my favorite worlds!

DNN Online 5/19/2011 — [German to English translation by Stephe @Cloud USA]

Asia-pop meets classical: Interview with Jan Vogler and Rain at the Music Festival

Dresden. Asian pop meets classical cello sounds at the Dresden Music Festival. The Korean superstar Rain (28), considered the Michael Jackson of Asia, is in the Semper Opera House together with festival chief Jan Vogler on stage. In an interview with news agency DPA, the two musicians talk about how the unusual musical connection came about and what makes it appealing.

A Korean pop star and teen heartthrob who makes music with a European cellist—how did this connection come about?

Vogler: “Rain and I met through a mutual friend in South Korea. At a dinner, we made friends and I helped him with my cello.”

Rain: “For me it’s the first time that I’ve done classical music. This is a new experience for me.”

Why do a combination of Asian pop and European classical music?

Vogler: “Music is universal. Pop music and classical music are very different, but we wanted to cross that bridge. You have to respect the music of the other. Then it really has the chance to be magical.”

Rain, apart from European classical music—is there a difference between Asian and European pop music?

Rain: “It is different for cultural reasons and the geographic location itself. In essence, the music is the same.”

What are your hopes for this joint appearance?

Vogler: “I want to show the European public that Rain’s music can be classic and how much class it has. It has an incredible energy.”

Rain: “The performance will be very helpful to me in the future, as a special inspiration.”

“Unbekannter Superstar.” Unknown Superstar. (Yep, he’s working hard on that outside of Asia… YAY)  “Bonbon-pop trifft klassic.” Candy-pop meets classical. Aww…! Cute. (I’ve always thought of Rain as a bonbon too.) 🙂 And the Sächsische Zeitung used his Nature Republic and SK-800 Rain Phone promotional images. Nice.

Isn’t it comforting to see what looks to be complimentary Media coverage when he visits another country, for a change?

We’ve all known about this since last year, remember? But I swear to you, fans, I am so proud of Rain at this moment, I literally don’t know what to do with myself. What oh what will Rain’s performance consist of? *so excited*  🙂

Newsen 5/19/2011 — [English translation by rain bird @Rain Europe]

Rain becomes the first Korean to participate in German Dresden Music Festival

Becoming the first person from Korea to participate in German Dresden Music Festival on May 19th, world star Rain (Jung Ji Hoon) will show new performances to the public at Semperoper (opera house) where the festival will be held.

According to Rain’s agent, “Rain’s come to be on stage at the Dresden Music Festival as he’s been asked to perform with ‘Jan Vogler’, a world-class cellist and executive director for the festival.”

It is extremely unusual for a pop singer to be on stage at the Dresden Music Festival, and this has been the first try of ‘Jan Vogler’ who has a lot of concern for Oriental culture since he changed its original theme while placing emphasis on a reversal in international aspects.

Meanwhile, even though they’ve decided to break with the long tradition and tried something new where pop singer Rain’ll perform with the symphony orchestra, the concert tickets are known to be sold out.

MCM Worldwide Blog 5/19/2011 —

Rain at the Dresden Music Festival
19-05-2011

On the occasion of the Dresden Music Festival, MCM is bringing together two unconventional artists to participate in a special project. Under the motto of “Five Elements”, the 34th Dresden Music Festival in 2011 invites performing artists to engage in musical encounters between Orient and Occident and to participate in a dialogue between Asian and European philosophies of life. “It is always an interesting time when a motto and a festival program develop together and become entwined” says Jan Vogler.

In accord with this theme, MCM has succeeded in bringing together two luminaries from different styles. This evening, Jan Vogler, world-famous cellist and artistic director of the Dresden Music Festival is going to perform together with the Asian global pop star Rain. As one of the internationally best-known stars on the classical music scene, in past years Jan Vogler has made the Dresden Music Festival a must-see event on the calendars of the world’s music aficionados. Rain, on the other hand, is Asia’s most popular all-round talent. Not only a pop star, he’s also an esteemed actor and world famous multi-entertainer. Time Magazine selected him for inclusion on the magazine’s list of our planet’s hundred most influential individuals already in April 2006 and also recently again in 2011 for the second time.

Also to celebrate this special occasion, MCM created a very unique piece of German craftsmanship for the cello soloist Jan Vogler – you can read more about it here.

[2006] Director Park ChanWook on Rain: “There’s no feeling of a dark, hidden side. His character is uniform inside-out.”

This vintage article was printed by Asian news source Chosun Sports back in November 2006, during the Rain/Director Park/I’m A Cyborg, But That’s OK heyday.

During this interview, done just as I’m A Cyborg, But That’s OK was premiering, Director Park ChanWook conveyed his pleasure over his and Rain’s collaborative work on the movie. He was very upfront with how impressed he was with Rain as an actor and as a person. As we understand it, Rain has continued to admire Park’s work for years.

This was Rain’s first major movie role (the lead, “Park Ilsoon”).

Please enjoy the read, fans. I certainly did! (Of course, any asides I had are placed inside [brackets].)

[article excerpt] Director Park: Drenched by the Rain

19 Nov 06, Chosun Sports
Kr to Ch: wwrain
Ch to Eng: rayndrop

Jihoon in Director Park’s eyes:

1. Carefree
2. No vices
3. No secrets
4. Down-to-earth
5. Smart with fast reflex
6. Great acting skills

When the movie “Cyborg” was about to show, Director Park Chan Wook kept smiling. This is not his first his first or second movie, but this time, it feels like he’s awarded with a special prize. That’s because the censorship board rated this movie as “12 and above.” Director Park has been working hard to make this a movie which fathers can take their daughters to. In the past, he had believed that “Sympathy for Lady Vengeance” would be rated 15 and above, but he was dealt with a blow. So this time, it’s double joy for him. To Director Park, this is a new challenge—his first attempt to film a movie with a youthful theme, and at the same time, it’s Rain (Jung Jihoon)’s first big-screen movie….(omitted)

Q: This time, the participation of Rain attracted much attraction. How did you two first meet?

Park: I got to know about Rain through Park Jinyoung [JYP ^@@^]. Once, when we were having dinner with some other people, Park Jinyoung started handing out CDs, one for each person. The CD says “Rain.” I thought it was the name of the featured song. Later, I learnt that it was the name of the singer, and I thought, “What a strange name.” I think it was the time he made his debut and was starting his promotional activities.

Q: How did you first discover Rain’s acting skills?

Park: During one of the movie award ceremony, I saw him dancing with Lee Hyori [Is he talking about the Hyori/Rain Tango here? ^@@^] . You could tell the kind of vitality he possesses. He doesn’t just dance well, but has a showmanship like that of Michael Jackson. You could easily imagine him in a movie. During the ceremony, I saw the looks and unwavering attention the actresses were giving him, and I thought, “He is a charismatic youth indeed!” But at that time, I thought, “When can we work together? I guess the possibility is not great…” So I let it go at that…

Q: How fated are you and Rain?

Park: During the sound dubbing for “Sympathy for Lady Vengeance”, Rain came to visit our production team. After work, we went for a drink together. We had drinks together again during the VIP movie premier. Because Sung Kang-ho and Chol Min-chi like him a lot, so unconsciously I trusted him too. At first when I was preparing to film a movie with youthful theme, my mind was all filled with images of Rain. I didn’t have time to go think about other actors. It’s exactly the same case when I was filming “Sympathy for Lady Vengeance”. The first person I thought of was Lee Young-ae.

Q: Now that you know Rain, what do you think of this person?

Park: Carefree, no vices, no hidden secrets, very down-to-earth. He’s exactly who he is when you see him normally. There’s no feeling of a dark, hidden side. His character is uniform inside-out. I want to let all these show through the movie.

Q: How’s Rain as an actor?

Park: He can feel very well. In acting, it is very important to be able to grasp the moments. Because he is very smart, he understands what I tell him very quickly, and can express the things I want.

Q: What’s the story behind choosing Im Soo Jung as Rain’s co-actress?

Park: Rain suggested it. He said he hopes for Im Soo Jung to take up this role. I naturally agree with him.

The Dresden Music Festival officially opened in Germany today, the 18th. And sponsor MCM is visibly excited about the Pop/Classic pairing of Rain and Jan Vogler on stage.

Rain is so darned creative that I, for one, can’t wait to see what they do! Could it be that he might, at one point, even play a classical instrument? Woah…!

MCM Worldwide Blog 5/18/2011 —

Dresden Music Festival

This year marks the 34th Dresden Music Festival. The festival opened today with a concert of Sachsische Staatskapelle at the Semperoper and will end on June 5th. Every May, Dresden becomes the Classical Music capital of the world for two and a half weeks during which internationally celebrated musicians perform in front of large audiences in all the important theatres and concert halls of a city famed for its culture.

This year, MCM is proud to be an official sponsor of the event.

The 2011 Dresden Music Festival focuses on the cultural values that guide people, on the philosophies of life, and the connections between Asia and Europe. The Festival tries to build a bridge to the Far East, touching some of the cultures along the Silk Road on the way. Asia’s cultural ambassadors, such as Cloud Gate or Rain are important, since they tell stories from the rich past and the fascinating future of Asia even when they interpret Western music. The conjunction of modern pop Asian artists and classical European musicians is what makes the festival such a special event this time around.

This notice from the 7th Cloud executive board was posted by Cloud RoseHoong on the rain-cloud English Talk board earlier today. Apparently someone is trying to fleece fans by selling them photo sessions with Rain during his time in Singapore for his BEST concert. This is FALSE and Rain will not be at this event.

Of course, this is very upsetting to Rain and his management. Please spread the word far and wide that Rain does not accept payments to take pictures with his fans. See below… and thanks!

[NOT TRUE:-Fan Photo Session with RAIN in Singapore on 21st May ]

The rumor that Rain’ll have a photo time with his fans in Singapore on the 21st, is completely untrue!

Hi, we’re the 7th Cloud executive board.

There is a rumor that the first and only 50 people who have paid $ 300 behind the scene in Singapore on the 21st, can pose for a photo with Rain, that’s completely untrue.

As you all know, Rain is nothing of the kind of man who poses for a photo with his fans on pay.

Hearing the rumor, his agents (J.Tune camp & CJ) are feeling upset, so they’ve asked us to advertise the fact that the rumor is nowhere near the truth.

They are under investigation to reveal the truth behind the rumor, getting the relevant information through email 7_2ga@naver.com.

Please use extreme care to always protect you from fraud relating to unofficially chargeable events using his name even in the years ahead.

In case of any doubt, we suggest that you contact his agents or the Cloud executive board about whether the rumor is true or not.

Thank you.

[post] Exclusive MCM cello case for Vogler to be unveiled during his “Pop Meets Classics” concert with Rain.

Rain at the MCM Lotte Dept. Store Renewal Open, February 2010.

Hmm!

Here is some interesting trivia connected to Rain’s and virtuoso cellist Jan Vogler’s upcoming joint Asian Pop meets European Classics concert at the Dresden Music Festival on May 19, 2011…

German luxury brand MCM (Mode Creation Munich), an endorser of Rain’s for the past year, is a sponsor of the 2011 Dresden Music Festival and has created a custom, hand-stitched Bespoke cello case exclusively for Mr. Vogler’s instrument. The world will get to see the case in the flesh during show.

MCM is celebrating its 35th business year with 70 boutiques in eight countries. The company was founded in Munich but moved its base of operations to South Korea when Chairwoman/CEO Kim Sung-Joo came on board.

As you may recall, » Rain was there last February 18, 2010 to help open the Avenue E MCM boutique at the main branch of the Lotte Department Store in Seoul.

MCM Exclusive Cello Case

Tomorrow marks the opening of the Dresden Music Festival in Germany and we have designed a case exclusively made to house Artistic Director’s Jan Vogler’s “Ex-Hekking”, built by Domenico Montagnana in 1721.

Domenico Montagnana is one of the finest cello and violin makers of the 18th century, but his cellos are particularly sought after by musicians and orchestras. Authentic Montagnana made instruments sell for millions of dollars. One of the most popular models is the Montagnana, slightly wider and shorter than the Stradivarius’ cello. This gives the instrument a broad, dark sound that projects evenly and warmly. It is best suited for Chamber music and Quartets as it doesn’t overshadow the other players, despite its booming bass.

This year’s festival, held between May 18 and June 5, is themed East-meets-West and is being sponsored by MCM as part of the brand’s cultural support for the arts. The programme will include a world premiere of a joint performance featuring classical virtuoso Jan Vogler and South Korean pop star Rain on 19th May, when the stunning case will be unveiled to the world.

The design of the cello case is being overseen by MCM’s most experienced designers and handmade by its artisans, bringing together the themes of the power of music and its magical impact on human hearts. The painstakingly detailed stitching process for the exclusive MCM Cognac Visetos leather case is being showcased in a video, underscoring the luxury heritage brand’s commitment to superb craftsmanship in its 35th anniversary year.

ROFLMAO! ♥

Joon is doing Bbaekga’s background part, the same way I did it and freaked Terri out in the car during one of our hunting-for-Rain shopping trips. Bi-ee-ee. Mianhaeeeee… ROFL! Thunder is precious as all get out. All I could do was grin and watch him. ♥ G.O is crooning with the best of them. Heheh. Get on down, SeungHo! Get down, clown. LMAO (Aww… where’s Mir? You doing okay, wherever you are? We are thinking of you.)

Looks like radio personality and comedienne Park Kyeong Lim was tiptoeing around the studio while the Boys had fun with Rain hyung‘s legendary debut year song. Enjoy, fans! We did. Rain had to have totally cracked up. 🙂

[Article] Stephe’s Take: The Rest of the Story.

[Cloud USA 5/16/11] Wow. Where do I begin?

Words are powerful, so much so that it always floors me when people aren’t careful how they use them. One statement, taken as fact and forwarded by everyone who encounters it, can circle the globe at light speed and negatively affect a worldwide fan base. Three sentences, depending on how they are translated from one language, can make someone who is humble and caring mistakenly appear to be haughty or arrogant in another.

The Associated Press article that was published Saturday, May 14, about Rain (a.k.a. Jung JiHoon, South Korean mega-entertainer), » Rain talks music and movies, but not military duty, still has me in a daze, for several reasons. A full accounting of Rain’s press conference in Macao needs to be released, and soon, so that his dedicated fans worldwide who were upset by the article can rest assured that they aren’t supporting him for nothing.

I sit here incredulous. There’s no time like the present, so let’s get right to my point of view on this subject.

• Before this past Saturday, Rain couldn’t have bought a mention when it comes to the English-speaking press. The man could have singlehandedly rescued a bus load of children from a sinking bridge, evacuated an entire village from an exploding volcano, and literally saved Planet Earth from an invading alien force, all in one day, and the American media wouldn’t have even bothered to write about him. As usual. But then a 16-paragraph article comes out where it looks like he’s being difficult or trying to hide something, and every U.S. news source, on-line and off, from The San Francisco Chronicle to The Boston Globe and everything in between, decides to throw that story up front and center? Really?

Where is the rest of what Rain said during this event? Where is the rest of the story, a full transcript or uncut video of this recent Macao press conference? There is no way that he walked into a room full of world press, sat down, said only those three sentences (which would have taken all of ten seconds), and then split. Which means that those three sentences [“Now America is no longer dominant. Now many Asian movies and songs are very popular. The two regions have the same status now.”] are sitting there in that article out of context, without what came before or after them and without their proper meaning.

This is a good place to bring up the “lost in translation” problems that are always present when it comes to English and Korean, as well. Korean-to-English conversion never comes out that cleanly and almost always has to be reworded to make proper sense. This is obviously a rewording—just how close is it to Rain’s original statement? Was the translator careful? The image in my mind of Rain looking into a camera and flat-out telling the U.S. that it is lacking is about as ludicrous as him looking into a camera and telling the Filipino people that their food was “decent” last fall. In the nine years of his career, he’s been careful not to be rude or insulting in the press to anyone, so those three sentences attributed to him do not jive, frankly. I’m not buying this clipped translation. There must be more to it.

• Something else I’m not buying is the statement But Rain thinks his entertainment future lies in Asia. This is not shown in the article as a direct quote from Rain, but as the writer’s conclusion, and it should be taken by fans as such. Why? It completely contradicts direct quotes that have come straight from Rain’s mouth in written and live interviews from the latter half of 2010 up until now. I’m going to try to put out a new album, finish a movie, have a concert tour, serve my time in the military, and then throw myself into struggling hard as an actor in the States. Please support me. That’s what the man’s been saying for months and Sundays. His KBS Global interview/article… his KBS 1TV live interview in April… when E!News Asia’s Dominic Lau talked to him before his show in Malaysia a few weeks ago… his February interview with Yonhap News… and on and on.

Not only does the writer’s claim contradict what Rain has been saying, it also contradicts the last words we heard straight out of his U.S. management’s own mouth, who I doubt would be spending time and money representing him over here if he had no career plans.

• Rain talks about his impending military service all the time. He’s been quoted left and right about it for the past year. He talked to Channel News Asia about it last month. He talked to Yonhap News about it. He talked about it to a huge press corp at Incheon Airport recently. He’s always talking to KBS about it. So he declines to talk about it in Macao and it’s some huge deal? So what? Which segues nicely into my next bullet point…

• If you already know that Few details of his military duty have been disclosed, but he told South Korean media last month that it would start at the end of this year, then why ask about his enlistment to begin with? What else is there for the man to say that hasn’t already been said? Wouldn’t it be more appropriate, in the little time he had, to talk about his current important projects and what he was in Macao for? Don’t celebrities, politicians, law enforcement officials, attorneys, et cetera, regularly determine the subjects to be covered during some press conferences in order to cut down on extraneous drivel that is inevitably droned on and on about by reporters (if they allow questions at all, that is)? Let’s face it, time is money.

Do I feel that Rain is turning his back on his future goals, plans, and dreams in the United States? No, and why would I, until he himself makes a statement changing his stance? Why should any fan believe that the Rain they’ve listened to for months would suddenly make such an abrupt character change, especially when the Media says so? And while I’m on that subject, when are fans across the world going to stop immediately taking everything the Media says about Rain as gospel, and continue believing in him for a minute? Will that day ever, ever come?

Rain is transitioning into a new phase of his life, and for him to continue hugging Asia while putting his arms around America seems a natural part of that. Both parts of the world are really important to him—America set the standard and has opened doors to him, and he’s proud of the strides that Asia has made in meeting the bar America has set, which wasn’t easy. I believe he’s simply talking up Asia, not putting down America. He wants to embrace and be embraced by both, together. » This is further enforced in my mind by the footage (edited) of Rain’s BEST Macao press conference that has come to light.

The question is, will the Media consciously hinder him in the future with what they decide to print?

And will we, as his fans, stand for that kind of behavior?

[Article] Terri’s Take: The Rest of the Story.

•May 16, 2011 • 41 Comments

— Cloud Cover by Terri :-}, Managing Editor

[Cloud USA 5/16/11] This past Saturday, while checking news alerts for Cloud USA, I ran across the following article: http://www.accessatlanta.com/atlanta-music/rain-talks-music-and-945466.html

The article, by Associated Press (AP) journalist, Min Lee, was written in attempt to cover the events that unfolded at a press conference in Macau that took place just hours before Rain’s Best Concert there.  For those of you who don’t know, the AP is a cooperative organization owned by its contributing companies that include newspapers and broadcasters here in the United States.  All of those entities use staff journalists located all over the world in 243 news bureaus in 120 countries, who contribute material to the AP.  That material is then distributed to not only AP members but also to AP subscribers all over the world.

What that means is that this brief and unassuming-looking article, written by a journalist at a press conference in Macau about an Asian star, was transmitted in just a few hours to hundreds of news outlets all over the United States—no—all over the world.  Yes, it’s true.  The Kansas City Star, The Sun News (Myrtle Beach, SC), The Charlotte Observer, TimesUnion.com, The Boston Globe, The Seattle Times, The Washington Examiner, Seattlepi.com, The Washington Times, The San Francisco Chronicle, Forbes.com, CBSNews.com, FoxNews.com and The Canadian Press are just a few of the news outlets that, by the end of the day Saturday, were featuring the headline, “Rain talks music and movies, but not military duty.”

Now, at first glance, one might think that’s terrific.  After all, Rain’s name being shared with people all over the globe is a good thing, right?  Well, yes and no.  On one hand, we usually can’t get anybody to write about Rain on this side of the globe, much less an AP writer.  So, the fact that Rain is being talked about at all is sort of a good thing.  The problem is the way this article was written caused Rain’s overseas fans great sadness, because it made it appear as if Rain was: 1) hiding something,  2) disrespecting the United States, and 3) had completely given up his goal of furthering his career here in the U.S.

To think that such a tiny article could cause such a monumental stir might be a surprise to some, but it wasn’t to me or Stephe.  No, the moment we read it we knew what was coming.  After all, while the press is notorious for stirring up trouble, Rain fans are also notorious for believing every single thing the Media says about Rain.  Why?  We haven’t a clue.  They just do.  So, when the e-mails and comments from dejected fans in the West began to flood the RainIverse and Cloud USA, begging someone to clarify what Rain meant, asking why he would say such things, wondering if what they were reading was really true, we just rolled up our shirtsleeves and started writing.

All I have to say is when are you going to learn, ladies?  Hm?  Hasn’t Rain been saying for months and months that he is making plans to focus on his acting career here in the U.S. when he returns from military service?  Isn’t he represented by Management 360 and the prestigious William Morris Agency here in The States?  Both agencies were well aware that Rain had a mandatory military service coming up when they signed him on.  Do you think they would let him off the hook so easily after getting—what—one measly motion picture out of him?  Besides, the idea that Rain is going to suddenly abandon his carefully laid career plans is ludicrous—no matter what the Media says.

Still, I can’t blame the fans totally, because just as much of the blame for this fiasco belongs to the writer of this piece.  You gotta hand it to the reporter though, who did his/her job and did it well.  The first thing a writer does when working up a story is they look for a hook, a way to spin the story in whatever direction they think will sell it the best.   In this article, the writer chose Rain’s upcoming military duty as his/her hook.  This isn’t a bad thing.  It just is.  A writer has to chose some kind of focus, and so Rain’s upcoming military duty which was about to interrupt his illustrious career for two long years was as good a hook as any.

The hook was made even juicier though when the concert organizers announced that Rain didn’t want to answer questions about his upcoming military duty.  Who knows why?  I sure don’t.  However, if I cared to hazard a guess, it would be that since the press conference had been “delayed 2-1/2 hours” (by whom, I have no idea, but who cares?) and since he had a concert coming up a few hours later, the last thing Rain would want to do would be to waste time talking about his upcoming military service when 1)  he had nothing more to say about it really that he hadn’t already said in every interview everywhere for the past year or so and 2) instead, he could be promoting his concert and the upcoming release of his new film.

Based on » some video feed that we’ve finally gotten our hands on, we now know for sure that the comment the writer made about Rain thinking his entertainment future lay in Asia was pure conjecture on his/her part.  What Rain was actually doing was making a statement about and a case for the popularity worldwide of the Asian entertainment industry in general.  In no way was he intending to make a case against the U.S. entertainment industry or making any specific comment about his future career being anywhere in particular.  In fact, he even said that both Asia and the U.S. were equally important to him.

And I believe him.

So, why don’t you?

Yes, fans… this is an edited clip of the Macao press conference that the AP article shot around the world stemmed from. Please point out for me anywhere in this footage where Rain acted as if OR said that he was no longer interested in pursuing an acting career in Hollywood. *insert Final Jeopardy music here, while I wait* Nothing, huh? Right. As if the man would be crazy enough to step in a pile of kaka like that after all the hard work he’s done over here. Really?

What is clear as crystal is Rain’s pride in the fact that Asia has been able to catch up in definite areas to the high standard that the U.S. set for the rest of the world, and that he wants to embrace the East and the West equally and be embraced by both in return. He seems to be giving Asia (and his huge Asian fan base) the shout-out she is due these days, not trying to give America a put-down, in my humble opinion. And up and until an uncut video or full transcript of everything Rain said at this press con is made available and that article proven right, this will remain my opinion.

Big thanks to Cloud Scorpiola for taking the time to translate and subtitle these news clips for Rain fans. Your hard work is greatly appreciated.
