[Eng trans] RAINY DAY Season 3, episode 7. Running alternately hot and cold.

•May 15, 2011 • 13 Comments

Cloud cover by: Stephe, Managing Editor ^@@^

Asia broadcast 5/14.

We pick up in the middle of the ADIEU! 2010 rehearsal for “Fresh Woman” with the really fun JumboTron graphics of a cartoon city that never sleeps. (YongDeock is sporting the heck out of that young hip Korea haircut with the sides buzzed clean. Looks so cute on him.)

Ah! The new Fresh Woman Disco-down dance break! Love that sexy choreography.

These RAINY DAY episodes are straight-up evidence of just how much goes into seemingly effortless-looking shows. I mean, Heavens to Betsy, just when you think a million kinks have been worked out, here comes one more. Without patience and stamina, there is no way to survive this process. It’s a good thing Rain and the Crew have plenty of that to go around. “This is Hip Song, rock tonight…” I like the casual way Rain brings the song in with his boys before the music starts… it’s very pep rally-ish and gets everybody hyped up before the band kicks in.

If Rain was water in a faucet (eh, did I really say that? If “Rain” was “water”… LOL), he’d be running alternately hot and cold in this episode. One minute he’s deep in thought and only marking the steps, and the next he’s full out jitterbugging to whatever. Hmm, to be a fly on his wall, privy to whatever he was thinking during that whole time…

Next, we get a little bit of “Don’t Stop” before launching into “Love Song” with Rain and mic rising out of the stage floor by spring-loaded elevator. (Oops, call the sound EMTs because his head mic is down for the count.) I must say I grinned all the way through this part. It was just so… precious. From him trying to make his NY Bling ball cap stay down over his voluminous poodle-do, to the adjustments to his retro mic, to dropping in and out of his “Love Song” character at will and comparing abs with the Gori-fied one on the Big Screen… it was almost as if Rain had put his “eternal” cameraman out of his mind and was simply living in the moment. And we got to watch him do that. Cool.

Oh-em-gee, here comes the treat of a lifetime… “Nan” in rehearsal! Look at that. The Man’s spine is elastic, the way he’s moving it around, and—

*gasp* *rewind and replay**rewind and play again* ♥ ♥ Well, all right, JiHoon. Minute marker 10:37 is worth two snaps and an Irish Creme on the rocks, yo. What are you trying to do, make me speak in tongues? @__@

And on that lusty note, I am out of here, fans. There’s some Irish Creme in my refrigerator that’s calling my name. Whew. Until next Saturday…! 😛

[Cloud USA 5/15/11] At least that’s how it appears to us.

As we understand it, Yi Woongkyu of Seoul, South Korea, also known as “DirectorWK” on Twitter, is involved in the production of Rain’s new movie, 비상 [飛上]: 태양가까이 (Bi-sang: Tae-yang-ga-kka-i), or “Flight/Soar/Take Off/Emergency: Close To The Sun” as script supervisor (a pretty tough job!). He shared a photo yesterday that was very much in the same tone as the movie—a beautiful picture of an F-16 Falcon/Viper on the tarmac.

This is the second such picture Yi Woongkyu has put up these past months… the first one, shown below, being an F-15 Eagle either touching down or taking off, which is the type of plane that Rain’s character’s special F-15 “Red Muffler” is based on.

Some of Yi Woongkyu’s tweets show his enthusiasm for Red Muffler’s amazing production values and his expectations of the movie’s success. He seems to be quite excited and enjoying his work on the project. In addition to Red Muffler, he has also worked on the movies Seducing Mr. Perfect (with Daniel Henney), No Doubt, Cyrano Agency, White Night, Ride Away, Attack on the Pin-up Boys, and Soo (수), to name a few.

Teachers’ Day is celebrated at different times across the world; in South Korea, the day reserved for it is May 15. In honor of the holiday, Mnet aired a Teacher versus Pupils special that included Rain and MBLAQ in its lineup. One thing we’ve noticed on Korean television is that they use “versus” (Vs.) not only in competitions and such, but when they’re merely making comparisons. A lot. That is what we think this is—more so a comparison of one to the other. (If a translation comes down the pike, we’ll add it here. Thanks.)

Enjoy the footage! 🙂

ROFL.

Apparently, The Man and his crew had a little time on their hands and couldn’t resist serving us up something special.

Rain’s tweet that came with his Twitpic:

인형 주문받습니다 ^^ 골라주세여

According to an English translation I found from Cloud Philippines on The Cloud fansite, Rain is saying something like this:

The dolls you have ordered have arrived ^^.  Please choose.

Ottoke!?  How in the world could we possibly choose one amongst all of these lovelies?  Impossible.

But that’s okay, ’cause you know what that means, don’t you, lovely Clouds?  That just means we’re gonna have to take them ALL.  :-}

[article] More on new global agency UAM (United Asia Management).

» Our previous post from April on United Asia Management is HERE.

HanCinema 5/13/2011 — by Lee HwaJung

Global Star Agency, United Asia Management

This April, six major Korean talent management agencies joined forces to launch the Asian management agency, UAM (United Asia Management). With ‘Hallyu’ or better known as the ‘Korean Wave’ becoming a significant factor in Asia’s Entertainment businesses such as KEYEAST, AM Entertainment, Star J Entertainment, SM Entertainment, YG Entertainment, and JYP Entertainment all came together to create a joint investment corporation called “UAM”, an international talent agency with the purpose of strengthening the foundations of ‘Hallyu’, promoting collaborative exchange and establishing an efficient casting system.

The main operations will focus on overseeing the portrait rights of all talents managed by the six agencies and intellectual rights as well as establishing an efficient talent database. Most of the talents managed by the six agencies and members of UAM have successfully become a significant force in the Asian market, making their mark as key figures of the Korean Wave. To name a few: AM Entertainment’s Jang Dong-gun; KEYEAST’s Bae Yong-joon, Kim Hyun-joong, Choi Kang-hee, Lee Ji-ah; SM Entertainment’s TVXQ, Girls’ Generation, Super Junior; YG Entertainment’s Big Bang, 2NE1, Se7en; JYP Entertainment’s Rain, Wonder Girls, 2PM. UAM is opening its doors to all artists Korean or non-Korean who are currently active or willing to enter the Asian entertainment market with a vision to go beyond the Korean Wave and create an ‘Asian Wave’. CEO of UAM and Star J Entertainment, JEONG Young-bum states the role of UAM, “Our goal is not limited to Korea but spreads out to Asia. Creating an efficient system is fundamental to achieve this”. He adds that UAM can “Pave the way for other major Asian talent agencies not only from the US but also from other Asian regions including China, Japan, Singapore and Malaysia”.

On the other hand, some have expressed concern that this ‘mega-scaled’ collaboration among local major talent agencies might only put more pressure on broadcasting companies and distributors in Korea….

Looks like we have another Twitter icon change, fans…

Right in the middle of this month’s BEST agenda, and right before he heads off to the Dresden Music Festival in Germany, Rain has gone Back To The Basic. Which I find really interesting, seeing as he got the idea for the B2TB-glam-epicene look when he was in Europe some years ago. Hm!

Of course, B2TB is the image tied in with everything BEST, so… could just be time to tie in the Twitter too.

[article] Rain bringing “My Girl” to BEST Singapore?

•May 13, 2011 • 7 Comments

Cloud cover by: Stephe, Managing Editor ^@@^

TNP PHOTOS: Hedy Khoo (courtesy of The New Paper)

At first I thought it disturbing that the concert organizer and Singapore press were making a HUGE deal about “My Girl” as if it were brand new and Rain hadn’t done it a million times already, in a million cities. But then the realization struck that yes, it IS new to Singapore if he’s never done it THERE before. If, as they say, he’s never touched a Singapore fan on stage, for whatever reason, ever. Which is entirely possible if he hasn’t been there since 2007—”My Girl” first hit the air off the Rainism album in 2008, right? It only seems like he’s been doing it longer.

And so, hyping the fans up in this manner makes a lot more sense. I get it.

LOL at the Boy, can the guy eat. You’re darned skippy he can. He has to, because he burns it right off on stage. Rain expends way too much energy to piddle around with his food. The Man needs something substantial in his body to survive and stay out of the hospital!

“Half-naked water dance” must = “Nan.” *chuckle*

VERY interesting how the message behind each BEST concert is being directly determined by the country it’s held in. How thoughtful is that? *applause, applause*

It’s being reported here that our Superman will be arriving at a private airport. If this is true… how unfortunate for our Singapore Cloud sisters. Aww. 😦

Do enjoy this article out of Singapore, fans.

AsiaOne News 5/13/2011 — by Charlene Chua

Korean Star Rain will pick one lucky S’pore fan

FOR the first time in Singapore, Rain is going to hug one of his fans here on stage – repeatedly. The Korean superstar will pick the lucky fan from the mosh pit, which can hold up to 1,000 concert goers.

And that lucky person could be one of The New Paper readers.

From today to Friday, you just need to present the day’s copy of TNP at any Sistic outlet to enjoy an exclusive 10 per cent discount on mosh-pit tickets.

The free-standing tickets are priced at $288 (the most expensive category).

Said a spokesman for concert organiser Faith & D Entertainment: “The lucky fan will be picked by Rain himself.

“He will be surveying the mosh pit and will select whoever he wants to bring up on stage. So I advise his fans to do what they can to try and catch his attention.

“Apart from serenading to her, likely with My Lady, he may present her with gifts as well.”

Rain will perform at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on May 22 as part of his The Best 2011 Rain Asia Tour.

The concert organiser has confirmed that he will add the segment where he hugs a fan “many, many times”.

At his last concert here, in 2007, the singer didn’t have any physical contact with his fans. Tickets then went for as high as $888.

(source: jinzhi07 @Baidu China)

Request for breakfasts

And it appears that Rain plans to build up energy for that the hugging – he has already placed orders for his breakfasts here.

Boy, can the guy eat.

For breakfast alone, he has ordered a whopping seven items, most of them healthy stuff.

His choices include an American breakfast, skimmed milk, orange juice, assorted fruits, toast, fried rice and a Korean-style soup.

The Faith & D spokesman declined to reveal which hotel he will be staying in.

Fans will also have a hard time trying to catch a glimpse of him at the airport.

Rain will fly in from Germany on May 21 after his gig there to Changi Airport’s private JetQuay CIP Terminal. He will use the same terminal when he leaves Singapore on May 23.

Rain’s 21/2 hour show, which costs more than $1.5 million to produce, will include his famous “half-naked water dance”.

The concert will be themed around saving the environment.

Rain, who wants to be a spokesman for the environment, promotes a different green message in each country he performs.

Each message is based on input from concert organisers in those countries; Faith & D suggested water conservation and recycling themes for Singapore.

The singer picked desertification (protection of deserts) for China and the planting of trees to prevent flooding for Thailand.

For Singapore, Rain will preach about the importance of water conservation.

The 2 and 1/2-minute scene of falling rain on stage will see almost 1,000 litres of water being used.

But, in line with Rain’s message, the production team will collect and recycle that water for plant-watering.

Said the Faith & D spokesman: “Although the working relationship that we have with his management is a very enjoyable one, it’s extremely tough to get in touch with Rain as he’s a very busy jet-setter.

“One minute he’s in Korea and the next he’s in America. He’s like Superman.”

To all our Asian American and Pacific Islander brothers and sisters… Happy Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Embrace each other with pride, as we all embrace you. 🙂

Northwest Asian Weekly 5/12/2011 — by Tessa Sari

10 API events that are shaping our lives TODAY [excerpt]

During Asian Pacific Islander (API) Heritage Month, we typically focus on the past — on what has happened and the events that have shaped who we are. But for a change, we decided to focus on the here and now.

So, what’s currently happening on the API front in the United States? Here are the top 10 events that are shaping our lives today.

1. The popularity of Chinese food is undeniable. That’s why the Smithsonian American History Museum in Washington, D.C., has a showcase called Sweet & Sour, which explores the history of Chinese food in America. The exhibit displays photographs and graphics, vintage signs, documents, and cooking and eating utensils to illustrate Chinese cuisine culture and its place in U.S. history.

2. Indian American cancer specialist Siddhartha Mukherjee won this year’s Pulitzer Prize in the general nonfiction category for his book, “The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer.” The book is recognized as a worldwide bestseller…

…..

8. Mayor of Fukushima Katsunobu Sakurai, Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, and Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni are listed in the 2011 “Time 100.” They’re each recognized as one of the 100 most influential people in the world. Other Asian names include Aung San Suu Kyi, China Defense Minister Liang Guanglie, Asian American singer Bruno Mars, and Korean singer Rain.

Way to go, JiHoon hyung! It’s one of the things you do best—inspire those around you. 😀

And by the doggone way: Someone needs to tell Arirang that just because you’re including Rain in something for an English-speaking audience DOESN’T MEAN you have to make mentioning Megan Fox a habit. Stop making yourself look silly and us look at you stupidly. (This isn’t a slight to Megan at all—I’ve nothing against her. This is not about some relationship between her and Rain that frankly does not exist. This is about media having nothing else to talk about and pulling something old and dusty out of their butt the closet and thinking they sound clever. In the words of Rain’s own song, No No No, you don’t. You sound desperate to say something “cute.” That’s all. /end rant ^@@^)

… because it showcases Rain’s voice in a way that is phenomenal.

… because the combination of Rain and hip-hoppers Double D automatically makes your head bob and your body rock steady.

Every time I play the Vol. 4 Rain’s World album, “Him and Me” is the first song I turn to, nine out of ten times. It’s a great starter and a soothing ender. If Dynamic Duo suddenly came out on Rain’s concert stage somewhere and blew this tune out live with him, I do believe I would swoon in ecstasy. For real.

“Baby, please come back and let me love you… love you—”

Before being a ninja assassin, Rain was a fighter of wind.

[Cloud USA 5/11/11] Yes, fans—Rain’s first martial arts role (and movie debut) almost came years before BokGu (drama A Love To Kill) OR Raizo (movie Ninja Assassin).

In 2002, he was set for the lead role of “Choi Bae-dal” in the South Korean film Fighter of Wind, set for release around Thanksgiving 2003.

The movie was based on Japanese manga Karate Baka Ichidai and on real life martial arts master Mas Oyama, the legendary founder of Kyokushinkai Karate. It is said that Rain even traveled to the mountains of Japan and participated in a full training course that included a 22km marathon run, mind-cultivation and fitness drills in bitter cold weather. But, as we understand it, he had to pull out of the role in June 2003 because of continued scheduling conflicts with the recording of his second album, Rain2: How To Avoid The Sun (released October 2003), which simply could no longer be delayed.

The movie’s budget was nearly as high as “Red Muffler”, so you could say it was considered a blockbuster at the time. The lead was recast and the movie released as Fighter In The Wind in 2004.

There were rumblings in the media back then about whether or not Rain could handle such a physically punishing role, as young and as thin as he was. I say… are you kidding? Of course he could have! With that disciplined of a mind, there was nothing he couldn’t accomplish then or now. The real question is, if he had conquered the movie scene that early in his career, what might have happened to SangDoo, to YoungJae, BokGu, Ilsun, Taejo, and Raizo? How much earlier would they have come?

Or would they have come at all?

Remember back in December, when our Forum moderator and graphic artist Katie came up with a dream cover for a future Cloud USA periodical? Well, now she’s making us dream even bigger.

You never know what the future holds, right? Haha. 😀

MBLAQ makes Oricon history with Japanese single debut

Korean boy band MBLAQ has made Oricon history with their Japanese debut single, according to their agency J.Tune Entertainment on Wednesday.

J.Tune announced in a press release that the boys have sold over 40,000 copies of “Your Luv,” placing them at the No. 2 spot on Oricon’s weekly chart and making them the first Asian artists to achieve the feat in just a week into their official debut.

“Your Luv,” which went on sale in the country on May 4, has also held onto its position at first place on Oricon’s daily chart for three consecutive days as well as becoming the most-downloaded ringtone on Japan’s Recochoku mobile chart and placing within the top three slots of preorder album charts in mid-April.

The boys held special events in Kawasaki, Osaka, Fukuoka, Sapporo, Tokyo and Nagoya to celebrate the release of “Your Luv” earlier this month.

Composed of members Seung-ho, G.O., Lee Joon, Chun-dung and Mir, MBLAQ (Music Boys Live in Absolute Quality) made their debut in 2009 with their single album “JUST BLAQ” and followed it up with their second single “Y” in May 2009.

Their most recent activity in Korea was with their first full-length album “BLAQ Style” and its 3D edition released in January and February, respectively, this year.
