… RAIN. 😀
MTV Newsroom Blog 6/10/2010 — In the spirit of our March Madness competition, we pit rock bands against each other… fans decide who wins!
Every four years, the international community comes together to decide which nation has the most dominant soccer team (or football team, provided that you live anywhere but the United States). The 2010 FIFA World Cup is upon us, and the first matches start in earnest on Friday.
Coincidentally, that’s also the day that will see the launch of the 2010 MTV World Cup of Rock tournament. Just as we did with our very popular Musical March Madness matchup, we’ve taken a huge sporting event and translated it to the music world. And once again, it’s up to you the readers to decide which country rocks hardest and best.
The 16 countries that qualified for the World Cup of Rock are grouped into four groups of four teams each. Play will begin on Friday with a matchup between the first two teams, and every day will see a different matchup. Once each team has played the others in its group, the two top seeds from each group will qualify for the bracketed tournament. From there, it’s single elimination until one nation is left standing.
Each country will be represented by a contingent of particular artists…
…Group B
England: The English do a few things exceptionally well, with soccer and rock just behind drinking and reality television. With Coldplay, Damon Albarn, Muse and Radiohead leading the way, it should be able to assert its dominance early and often.
South Africa: The host nation doesn’t have the strongest soccer team but it does have a solid batch of musical representatives, including arena hippie Dave Matthews, prog icon Manfred Mann and tongue-twisting rapper Jean Grae.
South Korea: Though it doesn’t have a great shot at the Cup, South Korea has a secret weapon in the World Cup of Rock: His name is Rain (a.k.a. MTV Movie Awards [Badass], and he is a one man dynamo.
United States of America: Easily the favorite, considering that it basically invented rock and roll, and with any number of massive international superstars at its disposal — including the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi, Foo Fighters and 75 percent of Metallica — there’s no reason it shouldn’t run the table….
» You can read Kyle Anderson and James Montgomery’s article in its entirety on MTV.com HERE.
This looks like a lot of fun and a unique way to watch the World Cup this year. We do believe we’ll give it a shot! (Just good clean competition, no serious attitude, hard feelings, or flame wars. Hopefully other folks that show up there will feel the same way.)
It also seems that MTV looks at Rain a little differently now, don’t they? A very cool thing.

That’s right. Say it once more, a little louder… RAIN’S BIRTHDAY. Good show. (That was for all of those news sites out there who, for some inexplicable reason, have recently reported that he was born on the 26th. W-r-o-n-g. *buzzer noise*)
We’re hoping that you all have gotten your birthday greetings or silver lining letters in the mail, or will soon. He’ll be working on that day (Friday), thrilling his audience on the ZEPP Tour stage in Fukuoka, Japan, but make no mistake—our well wishes mean a lot to him whether he’s at home or not. Anyone who needs Rain’s address at J.Tune can find it on our » His Biography: The Reimagining of Rain page HERE.
Enjoy this wonderful fan cam from Rain’s Global Fanmeeting last year, where he received a birthday song. He didn’t have to bother singing “My Girl”—the fans did that for him and it was just as well because he looked slightly overwhelmed by that and the cake. And of course, ever the jokester, Ji-Hoon found himself testing that cake to see if it was real. “Is this a genuine cake? I thought it was a sponge.” LOL! Funny guy.

≈(brief translation by rain bird)Rain : I thought this cake was for our 7th fan meeting celebration. Are you singing for my birthday? You shouldn’t have… Please, stop singing! The lyrics seem to be revised, (hearing his fans singing)but I’ve sort of found that it is the same as the original one except a few parts.(A sheet of paper, where the lyrics of ‘My Girl’ were written down, was handed to Rain.)Rain : Now, let’s sing a birthday song together.(After singing)Rain : Is this a genuine cake? I thought it was a sponge. This doll’s legs are nearly as tall as its height.Just a moment!(He tried to have a bite off the head of the eatable doll, and became aware that only the top of the cake was genuine, while the rest of it was an imitation)Rain: I can’t believe you would do this to me! (with a laugh)I’ll make a feast of it.≈
Japanese magazine KBOOM (Kebumu) is going back to the barrel for more Rain water—and we certainly don’t mind! Our Ji-Hoon will again be on their cover this coming August. According to Amazon Japan, the issue release date is June 21st (rather early?), and MBLAQ will be included in the magazine’s Hot Men of Summer topic in addition to Rain being its feature story.
The issue should be on sale on several online sites in the coming months, but for now it can be pre-ordered on its » Amazon Japan page HERE and its » Mnet Store page HERE. (Amazon Japan also carries Rain’s July 2010 issue of ODINA.)

An additional (and longer) segment about Rain’s MTV triumph, on ETN Entertainment News. Awww… he looks like he is about to burst here as he speaks but is holding his joy tightly in check. WOW—a woman walked into his interview and cammed him right in the face. Seriously, that took b@##$…!
I do believe that most of what he is saying here has already been translated in another post.

Asian source Money Today’s Star News has reported that, at an official press conference at around 2:45 pm yesterday afternoon in Seoul, J.Tune announced that the rumors of a romance between Rain and actress Jun Ji-Hyun are completely false.
J.Tune went on to say that Rain has only seen Ji-Hyun in a business capacity, when she was being considered for his new drama Fugitive, and that they are acquainted, and that the additional rumor that a person of considerable wealth (of a Korean conglomerate) introduced them is yet another falsehood. He has been seen going in and out of the I-Park apartment complex, where Ji-Hyun lives, because an acquaintance of his also lives there.
J.Tune continued by speaking on the so-called “evidence” and said that the photographs in question were composites of individual shots of Rain and Ji-Hyun spliced together. The representative also reminded everyone that Rain had already explained his Cartier rings earlier in the year (which he did, that they represented his familial bonds) and that he is sorely pissed right now.
J.Tune concluded by saying that, for their false reports and the damage to Rain’s privacy, the Daily Sports Seoul just might find themselves sued with a quickness.
(Thanks to rain bird and Rain Europe for this information.)
That’s what happens when you’re so darned desperate to get a story on someone. Why won’t people just let the man reveal the things he wants to reveal when he’s ready to reveal them? Trying to imagine being a celebrity and going through this kind of stuff, regardless of whether I’ve done what they’ve said or not, gives me a headache!

Oh, that thing was the Bane of Our Existence this past Sunday night, wasn’t it, ladies? (And at times, it was a straight-up twit tracker, yo) But we had our moment, and so did Rain, during the time he was at #1 (with several hundred tweets a minute) and above the Movie Awards themselves. Technical difficulties thwarted us and we couldn’t get a shot of that (gee thanks, Twitter) but at least we do have this for posterity, while our Ji-Hoon was very near the top. Soda Bottle 6/8/2010 — The women brought color to the MTV Movie Awards, but the men brought in the fun. Twilight boys Peter Facinelli and Jackson Rathbone were there to accept their awards for New Moon. Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith attended to promote their movie, The Karate Kid. Pretty boys Mark Salling from Glee and Zac Efron from High School Musical showed up to represent their teen groups and shared the red carpet with Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino and Pauly DelVecchio of Jershey Shore. Casey James from American Idol, as well as Christian Siriano, RAIN, Michael Cera, Mark Wahlberg, Russell Brand, Tom Felton, TI, Tyrese Gibson, Sean Combs, and more were also in attendance. Well I tell you, Clouds, our own MTV Music Awards odyssey was one incredibly long, exhausting, but oh-so-exciting rollercoaster ride, wasn’t it?
I want to thank, on behalf of Terri and myself, our sister Rain fan sites, forums, blogs, and all of you individually for voting and voting like madwomen, tweet-trending like it was going out of style, streaming video for other fans, facebooking live updates, texting and throwing out LAX news moment to moment, journeying to Los Angeles and supporting Rain in every way that was humanly possible, and doing the Cloud name proud from the very start to the very finish of this thing.
We came together and made it happen. WE the fans handed that award to Rain. (Thanks to our countless overseas Cloud sisters as well, for voting and banging the drum and helping fight the good fight! Aja hwaiting!)
I don’t think I’ll be forgetting this past Sunday evening, the 6th, any time soon. It might as well have been a military operation LOL! There we were, Base of Operations: Terri’s place, family room. Terri on desktop computer at the 9 o’clock position. Me on Omma Betty’s laptop, on the sofa, at the 6 o’clock position. Massive widescreen LCD television primed on the MTV HD channel, at the 12 o’clock position. Various family members at the ready to fetch food or drink and to offer cheers or derisive jeers at the TV screen, as needed. Twitter. Facebook. Tweettrack. Red carpet live streams. Cloud USA Forum, with a host of dedicated Clouds from all over the world signed in and at the ready. Email open… watches synchronized… multiple tabs and Windows open… flex and loosen up the fingers… get set… GO.
And we were off.
Oh my, the fun. Our forum members—our beloved friends—were the most amazing women that night as we all watched the show together and cheered Rain on to victory. (You are what life is all about, my dears, and we adore you.)
Now that all the craziness is over, we’ve celebrated, and Rain is safely home, pat yourselves on the back and take a well-deserved rest. 🙂
°
While watching the footage of the hero’s reception that Rain received in Korea after landing at Incheon Airport today, two sets of feelings came over me… both very powerful, and yet different.
One was utter pride at what we had accomplished, Clouds. How can anyone look at the joy that has been on Rain’s face since his name was called in that auditorium and not feel the same? OMG. He wanted this so badly, and my happiness for him knows no bounds. How about yours? But at the same time… I am saddened. Terribly. Only Asia is allowed to give Rain a hero’s welcome or departure—we are not. Only Asia is allowed to take pictures of him on our streets—we are not. Clouds living in the US were so instrumental in descending upon MTV and voting Rain Biggest Badass Star that—yes, I’m going to go there, I’m going to say it—if we hadn’t, it is not certain that he would have won the award. It took all of us, fans here and overseas, to get that win, not just some of us. But only some of us reap the benefits.
(MTV hadn’t even put a bio up for him! He was the only nominee without one. Terri immediately shot over there like a cannonball and addressed the issue all over the site, and got her threads deleted, and then riled up other Clouds and banged that drum until MTV finally got with the program, which took a while. She did that, with Michelle and a bunch of you joining that fight.)
We don’t want to own Rain. We don’t want to take up so much of his time that we’re practically running his life. I’m simply saying that if Clouds in the States dedicate themselves to a cause here and bring about not only change on their own awards show but real success, then they could at least get one or two seconds of Rain walking through LAX so that they could cheer and support him as a group. He didn’t even have to stop walking, that would have been fine. Some fans flew in and drove in from other states for just a glimpse of him and didn’t even get that. In fact, if he hadn’t won the Biggest Badass Award, guess what? We wouldn’t have seen him at all.
Only one minute and two seconds of Rain on stage, over a four-day period.
And more than likely, with the ZEPP tour, the new drama, the upcoming album, and the military looming, he won’t be able to return to the US until sometime during the next Ice Age.
Maybe we should all just move to Japan.
(We’ll never abandon you, Ji-Hoon. Don’t ever worry about that.)

In this tvN Entertainment News spot, the studio hosts were delighted as they watched Rain on the Gibson Amphitheater stage live, and seem enthralled with what he has accomplished. The footage briefly chronicles Rain’s journey from Incheon Airport outside of Seoul, to having the Golden Popcorn statuette in his hand.
*Male studio host: “… biggest, badass star, yeah.” 🙂
That long, leisurely stroll Rain took through the MTV audience was quite effective. You could almost “hear” the women gawking at him. Er… WHO IS THAT? You know how it when you see an amazing piece of hotness and you don’t want to move or blink… you just want to stare and take him all in. Even Paris and her peeps were looking at Rain like he was a freshly smoked ham bone. Ha.
There are celebrities and people in the industry here who know very well who Rain is—you don’t walk a Time 100 Red Carpet and make two Hollywood movies and not come away with quite a few contacts in the bargain. (During his ComicCon visit, there was RAINY DAY footage of him hitching a ride on somebody’s private plane and casually conversing with Jeremy Piven and Idris Elba during the trip.) But Sunday night’s exposure was up close and personal for a lot of Americans who hadn’t noticed him yet. We’re pretty sure he’s been Googled up the wazzoo by now. 🙂 — Stephe ^@@^

KPopLive 6/7/2010 — Singer and actor, Rain, has been awarded the “Best Action Star”, also known as the “Biggest Badass Star” at the MTV Movie Awards.
Being the first Korean to globally rise up to the top amongst the other competitors, it’s a case that calls for attention but for Rain, this award is something much more meaningful to him.
The Korean World Star has given a very touching speech but what did it mean personally? Although Rain has debuted as a singer, he wasn’t too far behind in his acting skills. As an actor, Rain has charisma that fits both romantic-comedies and dramatic works.
In the drama Full House, he has worked with actress, Song Hye Gyo, in a romantic-comedy drama, but in the drama A Love to Kill, he worked with actress, Shin Min Ah which left many viewers crying. Also, in Park Chan Wook’s movie, I’m a Cyborg, But That’s Okay, Rain played a mentally handicapped patient that showed the dorky side of him. Rain’s challenge as a successful actor didn’t stop there….

Mochi Magazine 6/7/2010 — At last night’s notoriously pop-culture-infested and entertainingly over-the-top 2010 MTV Movie Awards (hosted by the hilarious Aziz Ansari, who is best known for his role on NBC’s Parks and Recreations), two Asian entertainers went away with a famed golden popcorn award in hand. Korean singer and actor Rain (a.k.a. Bi) won the award for “Biggest Baddass Star” for his role in “Ninja Assassin,” while Korean American actor Ken Jeong won the “Best WTF Moment” for his outrageous performance as the villainous Mr. Chow in “The Hangover.”
Rain’s victory is particularly noteworthy, as it marks the first time in history that a native Korean has won an MTV Movie Award. In addition, he beat out the likes of Angelina Jolie in “Salt,” Chris Pine in “Star Trek,” Channing Tatum in “G.I. Joe,” and Sam Worthington in “Avatar” to garner his win—and looked rather handsome in a sleek, all-black clothing ensemble as he accepted his award….

We believe this happened on June 2nd, either before or after Rain performed at the Korea Times 56th Anniversary bash. Rain : Hello, everyone. Long time no see. This is Rain.0:19~0:52
Q: When you’re nominated for the 2010 MTV Movie Award, what do you start saying to yourself?Rain : Being a candidate for the award is an honor in itself because I’ve always dreamed of attending such an awards ceremony since I was a little boy.
0:53~1:11

Q; Do you think you’ll get the award?Rain : With or without the award, it’s been a pleasure [it will be a pleasure] to walk on the red carpet, and to attend the ceremony is in itself a privilege. I just want to enjoy the ceremony.
1:38~1:57
Q : What scene in your movie Ninja Assassin has been strongly impressed on your memory?
Rain : I’m reminded of my training course before the shooting rather than a scene of the movie. I’d like to thank you for your love and support for the movie, although there are many scenes of bloodiness in it.
1:58~2:17
Q: Why do you think you’ve been nominated for the award?Rain : There is a scene where I’m doing push-ups standing on my hands as if I do yoga, and I think I’ve been nominated for the award by it.
2:18~2:34

Asian news source Newsen reported today that Rain, fresh from being honored with the Biggest Baddest Star Award at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards (he is the first Korean to receive it), was given a bouquet upon his arrival at Incheon Airport on June 8 at 5 pm. He won the award on June 6th at the Gibson Amphitheater in Universal City, LA, USA, over Angelina Jolie, Channing Tatum, Chris Pine, and Sam Worthington.
Rain’s feelings right after receiving the award: “At last my time and efforts for the Ninja Assassin shooting seem to have come to fruition. I’d like to thank all of my fans for their ongoing support and help.”
His natural and realistic performance in NINJA ASSASSIN appealed to the world’s moviegoers. At the Green Planet Movie Awards back in March, he snagged Best International Entertainer (Asia) and the Asian Cultural Ambassador of the Year, and was also named one of the 10 Outstanding Asians in Hollywood.
For now, Rain will jump into rehearsals for his upcoming ZEPP concert tour in Japan, which will start later this month.
RAIN:
“The sort of thing that you would only see on a simulated news [spot] really happened. [He’s referring to a commercial spot he did a few years ago, in Australia, in which he portrayed himself winning a prestigious award in the US. ^@@^] I’d like to thank all my fans. When I was named Biggest Badass Star, I almost cried, but I smiled. I didn’t expect I would win the award. Rather, I [expected] Channing Tatum would do it. But to my surprise, my name was called and I was mightily pleased. Everything seems to me like a dream.”
“The organizers offered to engrave my name on the popcorn-shaped trophy, so I left it with them.”
“I’ve won an awesome action award called Badass, and the word bears many meanings. One of them [involves the] hips. It was said that everybody was having fun when I joked with American humor using the word and [referred to my own] hips saying I had worked out. But the truth is I’ve [always] exercised to keep the hips fit.”

I guess all of you know about the news of Rain’s winning the MTV Movie Award.
I was contacted by Rain in LA a short time ago, and he said,
“I’m so happy. Thanks to the support all of you have shown, I could win the award. I’ll try to make you proud to be Rain’s fans.
When I was receiving the award, I was so nervous that I lost my speech. Sorry to have left out my appreciation of your help.”
Once again, congratulations on Rain’s winning the award.
JoongAng Daily 6/7/2010 — Korean singer and actor Rain won the award for Biggest Badass Star at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards, held yesterday at the Gibson Amphitheatre in Los Angeles. Rain is the first native Korean to ever win an award from MTV and the fourth Asian star to win one after Lucy Liu, Jackie Chan and Ken Jeong.
The Korean hallyu (Korean wave) star won the award for his role as Raizo in the movie “Ninja Assassin,” directed by the Wachowski Brothers, beating out Hollywood heavyweights such as Angelina Jolie, Chris Pine, Channing Tatum and Sam Worthington.
The Biggest Badass Star award is one of the new categories introduced in this year’s MTV Movie Awards. Actor Lee Byung-hun was also nominated but failed to make the final list.
Before his departure to the City of Angels, Rain commented that his participation in the MTV Movie Awards is meaningful and shows how far he has come….
