Please NOTE: The Korean Cloud‘s 8th Cloud membership drive has not yet commenced. As soon as it does, however, we’ll let you know here. (They are still having server problems. It’s proving to be tough trying to find someone who can fix it properly… and come on, we’ve all been there before with our own computers, haven’t we? As soon as the problem is behind them, the 8th membership drive will begin. They thank you for your patience.)

In roughly one week, Rain has set hearts aflutter and fans afire with his unexpected appearances in three countries—Switzerland (Geneva), France (Paris), and England (London).  Well, make that four, with his unexpected appearance on MTV.com (USA) as their Style blog’s Hottest Hustler for January 19th. It is GOOD to see the Man finally taking personal time for himself, even if he is mixing a little bit of business with it.

And we’ve heard, through the grapevine… that it ain’t over. 😉

And now on to the open conversation!

[fan made] Domanja check: Nope–try it again, JiWoo! :)

•January 24, 2011 • 5 Comments

Enjoy this funny compilation of Runaway/Fugitive Plan B outtakes and silly moments. Some we’ve seen… and others we haven’t. All are cute and funny as all get-out. NG, Rain… try it again!

I’m still really missing the show, so I’m deep into reruns on Hulu. Maybe by the end of this “run”, I’ll have my fill.  (Yeah, right.) 🙂

[Exclusive/event info] “It’s Rainism in London.”

[Cloud USA] Thusly ends the announcement that has been made on the MCM London Rain Event page that is now up on Facebook. And here is the rest of that announcement:

“MCM cordially invites you to an afternoon rendezvous with Rain at MCM London.

2-3pm only.

Rain will be making an exclusive personal appearance at the London MCM store to sign MCM Stark Backpacks purchased at the event.”

RAIN will only be available for a very short time and so numbers will be very limited. Only one backpack per person. No other items will be will be signed. You will not be able to reserve backpacks prior to the event. Security on the door will be strict. No cameras, phones or mobile devices will be allowed in the store.

It’s Rainism in London.

[Exclusive] Cloud USA’s Word on the Street: We were wondering if perhaps the Sloane Street shop was being made MCM’s flagship store, perhaps, but a little birdie is telling us no, that is not the case, which is why there was no publicity (makes sense).  It is simply an impromptu event, set up by MCM, that sprang up rather quickly because JiHoon happened to be in London (not on business), and seeing as he is a spokesperson for MCM and he’s seldom in the U.K where fans can see him, why not?

(courtesy of MCMWorldwide)

As we understand it, his schedule is über-TIGHT right now, so he can’t be at the store for long, and there won’t be time for photo ops or interviews (except for the photographs that will be professionally taken during the actual backpack/autograph session and later emailed to those fans). The store is pretty tiny, and we’re told that Rain would have preferred a larger fan meet, but sometimes things just can’t be helped. The whole thing will probably not last more than an hour, so good luck to those of you who plan on attending. And please be careful. Keep it together and don’t get hurt.

The MCM Stark backpacks come in three colors (Black, Red, Classic Cognac) and in two sizes, medium and large. The medium bag will be £365; the large £475 (Wow, ouch, pretty steep, especially for students, but then we are talking about a luxury brand item here, folks). Don’t worry about buying something if you can’t afford it, fans.  Keep things in perspective… but do be on Sloane Street if you can to support Rain while he’s there. Hopefully some French fans might make a road trip to London for the day…? 🙂

If we lived right across the Channel, I know we would!

Cloud USA does have a correspondent who is already on the scene, primed and ready, so do stay tuned.  We thank Jang-Ho Kwon of the MCM team in London for speaking with us.

And thank you, JiHoon, for taking precious time out of your personal schedule, when you didn’t have to, and giving it to fans who usually don’t get to see you on their home soil.

Blast from the past #52: Rain sends the interviewer packing. LOL!

•January 23, 2011 • 3 Comments

Have fun with this KBS World Entertainment Weekly feature interview from late 2006, English-subbed, where Rain looks back on his career right before the December opening of his movie I’m A Cyborg, But That’s OK and the start of his Rain’s Coming World Tour.

Reporter Saengmin is hilarious as always and absolutely awed by Rain. Rain is funny and sincere, and thinks back on his successes without so much as one hair of arrogance.

Unbeknownst to him, his world was about to explode into one of the absolute happiest AND most miserable times he could imagine, nearly simultaneously, over the course of the next few years. And, in JiHoon fashion, he would weather it all and continue on in becoming one of the most celebrated entertainers across the planet.

Thanks for finding this again, Terri. I hadn’t seen it in such a long time!

Blast from the past #51: Yes, he was actually singing into the mic.

•January 23, 2011 • 5 Comments

You would swear it was the CD, he was THAT good.

There were very subtle differences in the song, though, that would have only happened live. He even checked his pitch at one point, during the bridge. Goodness gracious me. I mean who sounds like this just sitting on a sofa?

I know, I know. 비 does. 🙂

Do enjoy this Hotlink blast of Baby Boy singing “Handshake” in 2002.

Blast from the past #50: Escaping the sun in Rainism attire.

•January 23, 2011 • 10 Comments

Enjoy this KBS TV1 performance that came in the latter part of 2008, during the time our Magic Feet returned to the S.Korean stage full force and released “Rainism,” after being away from singing because of Speed Racer and Ninja Assassin.

Check out the way he sings “Escaping.” The way he ad-libs during the song and changes up the notes whenever the mood hits him is just further proof of how well he’s learned to command his voice over the years. Just listen to that. And notice how people are figuratively (and probably literally) sitting on the edges of their seats, watching him. Half the time they can’t even blink. They were welcoming their Hollywood star back, and they were just thrilled. 🙂

And then he speaks to the audience with such a humble demeanor… though he is bigger than bigger than BIG. ♥

And THEN you get a “Love Story” simply out of this world. Stellar.

RAINY DAY Season 2, episode 50.

•January 22, 2011 • 14 Comments

Asia broadcast, 1/22. For RD Season 1, there were 52 episodes… so I’m suspecting that, unless we’re really lucky, we may be coming down to the wire, fans.  Stay tuned on that…

So let’s get started, shall we? *hitting play*

We’re at ZEPP Osaka (June 29 & 29)! Oh—check out that shy SungTak smile. Oh man. *fanning*

We haven’t seen The Man and The Men born of fire for a while, so it’s spectacular seeing it again, as the Osaka fans did, right before “Rainism” begins blaring through the Hall. And, as has been everywhere else up to this point, it is Standing Room Only. Can you feel my rainism? It’s right here… Yes, the Master of Exhale does his thing …until suddenly his hair captures the lights and completely takes over the show. Hey, ho, Rain, go…

So just put your hands on up. You know you wanna. Don’t leave me hanging here with only mine up in the air. 😛

Okay. You would think that I’ve never seen “It’s Raining” before, because I’m sitting here staring at the start of it in some sort of catatonia. The Men are just… gorgeous. Rain is joint-popping all over the place. And his hair is still performing like it’s getting a separate paycheck or something. (That’s got to be it. The hair, regardless of how he’s wearing it at any given time, is under its own separate contract as a J.Tune artist. And it should be paid, if you ask me.) ♥ Heavens.

You know, I have to say that, even though the ZEPP venues were small and intimate in comparison to say, Saitama and other arenas, and that was the whole point anyway, the big, spectacular ZEPP set graphics that were used for stage backdrop made those ZEPPs feel huge. At least to me. Wow.

Ooh. JiHoon is crooning “Handshake” now. Ooh. And then… “Konichiwaaa…” Let me throw some Japanese at everybody while I dry off and HAVE to shake my hair around, they like that a lot, yeah… Aren’t I dashing? Check the smile. Should I wipe my arm pit? No? But why not? I’m Rain! ROFL The Master of Exhale is also the Master of Charm, and he knows it. Don’t you just want smack him upside the head? LOL

Check out how he begins “Escaping the Sun.” No fanfare. No graphics. Whiskey voice. In the dark and with very little movement—hardly any at all. But it is just enough to make your mouth go O. How does he do that? I’ve no idea.

I just want him to keep it up.

Well, there’s probably no need to really worry. The Men behind The Man are tough like that, right? He’ll be good to go in no time. Just send him some love. Lots of it!

[announcement] Our undying thanks to the following people…

•January 22, 2011 • 10 Comments

… who helped the ball continue to roll one year ago, after the Cloud USA media blog went live on January 21, 2010.

Melanie Ng (mjdenbyng) of Perth, Australia

Thank you, Mel, for being our very first Media Blog subscriber back in February 2010. And the first Rain fan to let us showcase your fan art on Cloud USA. You officially started off the Cloud USA community and have been here ever since, when time permits, even through the timezone differences, and for that, we are forever grateful. ♥

Dianne Dalby Haley (haleydd) of Virginia, USA

Thank you, Dianne, for being our very first Facebook friend. And our third Media Blog subscriber back in February 2010. I’ll never forget how ferociously you snatched up the Cloud USA banner, banged our drum to anyone who would listen, and became not only a community member, but a friend. You believed in Cloud USA before Cloud USA was cool. Haha. ♥

Busybee1982 of Pennsylvania, USA

Thank you, Busy, for being so kind and supporting from the first moment we met. You were the first person to leave a comment on the Media Blog. I always looked forward to seeing you over at RainListings Cafe shortly after Cloud USA went live. And when Rain was flying into NYC in that darned blizzard for Concept Korea, and I was tracking his flight through the air like a hound dog, YOU were giving me up-to-date reports from the ground, from your position up north. Talk about epic fun! You’re a special one, my dear. ♥

Katie (purplezest) of Nottingham, U.K.

Thank you, Katie, for being one of the first six people to join the Cloud USA Forum, because once you were there, you went off like gangbusters. There was no stopping you—you quickly became and still are the most prolific and dedicated forum poster hands down, which is why we eventually asked you to be our moderator. You’ve been a major supporter and a loyal friend, and we love you. ♥

Jax of RainListings

Dear, dear Jax! You were the first person to join the Cloud USA Forum, and you were the first person to show Terri and me compassion and understanding as we struggled to get our legs underneath us at the very beginning. You treated us like human beings, encouraged our efforts, and were so sweet and hardworking when it came to your own site (that’s where I met Kongsao too, some months later. Kongsao did the RainTube!). Thanks for being there then, though our paths don’t cross much now. We’ll always think kindly of you. ♥

Duggu of Rain Destiny Peru

Thanks, Duggu, wherever you are, for also treating us like human beings and encouraging our efforts. Yours was the first overseas Rain site we visited and contacted, just to say hello, and you were so gracious and excited in your response. It is that kind of behavior and goodwill between Rain fans that separate the real fans from the posers. We will always think fondly of you. ♥

We will be getting Cloud USA merchandise sometime this year. Terri is still searching out the best suppliers right now, so we don’t have a definite date, but it will happen. In gratitude to these wonderful ladies, when our merchandise does hit our fan site store, we will give them one free purchase of their choice of selected items.

Please join us, everyone, in giving Melanie, Dianne, Busybee, Katie, Jax, and Duggu a hand, and send them all good vibes wherever they are during this Cloud USA First Anniversary weekend.

Aja, Rain world nation! On Terri’s and the Staff’s behalf—

[announcement] The winner of Cloud USA’s 1-year Anniversary giveaway.

•January 22, 2011 • 20 Comments

Well, everyone… we honestly thought that « our Anniversary giveaway for the KoreAm Rain Special Edition Journal would last longer than it did (like, until Saturday?). But no. Members hit that post at 8 pm EST sharp and flooded the thing with so many comments back to back that I had to strap on a life preserver. It might as well have been a live chat. Heck, it was a live chat, thanks to my quick trigger finger (moderating, moderating, moderating! gah!) Thank God the winning number was between 1 and 75 instead of, say 1 and 200. O_O

By 9:45 pm, it was all over and I was looking like Don King.

The night before, I asked forum moderator Katie/Purplezest to choose a number between 1 and 75 for the giveaway—any number she wanted.  Her number of choice was… 52! (for no particular reason, she just pulled it right out of her ___ ) And so, after all was counted 15 ways from Sunday because we wanted to be VERY sure of the outcome, the winner of the KoreAm Rain Special Edition Journal is… MARISARA!

Congrats, dear! We already have your address, so just sit tight and we’ll get your prize out to you very shortly. We will also send nice consolation gifts to runners-up Divalcious and Stormofstarzz. Oh, Cecilia—you came so close. So close!

Thanks, all of you, for making this fast and furious giveaway another experience to remember. We had way too much fun. All I can say is WOW (until the next giveaway, that is… haha).

°

That’s right, lovelies!  WongFu and James Bong Stephe and Terri have been stirring Ye Old Soup Pot again. And this time we’re pulling something really special out of the Cloud USA stash, because it’s a really special day.

Way back in May 2007, Rain flew into Atlanta to announce the June start date of the North American leg of his Rain’s Coming World Tour to the press. One of the concert stops would have been Philips Arena downtown, except that, shortly thereafter, The Corporation That Will Forever Be Despised had the audacity to try to “legally” stop Rain from using his stage name. And by the time things were settled by the courts, it was time for Speed Racer and no time for North America. Sigh. (We won’t go on about that here. We’re sure you can easily see that boulder-sized chip that’s still sitting on our collective shoulder.)

Well, before that hot mess went down, KoreAm Journal, a national magazine that has covered the Korean American experience since 1990, put Rain on the cover of their June 2007 issue and included a major write-up on his Atlanta jaunt. Writer Corina Knoll did a fantastic job indeed, bringing JiHoon to life in the article. Please see below excerpts from that article and a link to the entire piece in the KoreAm Journal back issue section on the magazine’s website:

°

[Article EXCERPTS] “Let It Rain” / KoreAm Journal, June 2007 / Corina Knoll, Correspondent

[article opening] It’s mid-afternoon in the A-T-L and the temperature is nearing 80 degrees, which is the norm for the month of May in this city.

Welcome to Hotlanta, home to the largest consortium of black colleges, a few dozen Waffle Houses and a style that is particular to XXL T-shirts and Baby Phat. Of course, it’s also a place ripe with history, serving as the birthland of Martin Luther King, Jr. and the backdrop of the civil rights movement. Today, the metropolis of urban sprawl also boasts a thriving music industry. Hip-hop stars like OutKast and Ludacris got their start here, putting Southern rap on the map, and the headquarters of LaFace Records, the label that produces Usher, Ciara and Pink, calls the Peach State home.

What Atlanta is not, is a city where you’d imagine the American success of a Korean pop star would begin. And yet it is here where Rain will announce his 2007 North American tour, projected as the vehicle that will put him in an entirely different class of pop stars. Because while he has sold out concerts across Asia and filled up Madison Square Garden and Caesar’s Palace, he’s now attempting a full-blown, unprecedented U.S. crossover.

The tour doesn’t kick-off until June 15, but he is scheduled to arrive later today for a press conference. Atlanta, a mainstay of the Dirty South, feels like a hard sell, but perhaps it is the proper litmus test to determine if Rain can shine in America.

And let us skip forward to the end ….

[article closing] On my way out of Atlanta the next day, I spot Rain standing alone near the Delta ticket counter. No entourage in sight, he is just one in a sea of business travelers and families at the airport at 9 a.m. on a Friday. Wearing cropped khakis, an army fatigue button-down and black flip-flops, he’s listening to an iPod, his head bowed low, covered with a brown beanie.

I re-introduce myself as one of the many reporters who must blend into an unrecognizable mass for him.

He pulls the headphones from his ears and smiles.

“I know who you are,” he responds fluidly in English.

We make small talk. He says Dallas turned out to be very nice, that, no, he didn’t go to the gym this morning and, no, he’s not too tired from the trip. He has one more leg to go — a press conference in New York — until he returns to Korea.

I joke that he should have made it easier on me in the interview by utilizing what today seems to be perfectly functioning English.

His manager appears to whisk him away, but before he leaves, Rain extends his hand. “Nice to meet you.”

I repeat the phrase back in both Korean and English then bow and wave, unsure as to which culture and language is more appropriate.

“Bye Rain … uh, Bi.”

A few minutes later, I see him crammed in the lineup for baggage security, holding onto a brown Louis Vuitton suit bag with his crew around him.

Putting the bag on the moving conveyor belt, he pulls off his hat and fluffs up his hair. Off comes the button-down, the belt, the flip-flops, the shades — until he is standing barefoot in just a T-shirt and shorts. There is no stylizing, no incognito mysteriousness. He seems naked, vulnerable. Standing next to a friend, he rises to his tiptoes, and the two laugh and playfully punch at each other.

It occurs to me that this is a rare glimpse of Jeong Ji-Hoon, and that if all goes according to plan, I may be witness to one of the last times he can traipse through an airport or chat in the middle of a terminal. Because when he returns it’s game time and he’ll be embarking on a seemingly implausible mission that will either make him want to hightail it out of town or reap the awards of a long-awaited dream.

Whether or not America is ready, Rain is about to fall.

°

And so now comes the COOL part.  What oh what are we giving away, pray tell?  The June 2007 issue of KoreAm Journal, above?

Nope. You can probably still backorder that. But we don’t think you can backorder this

The June 2007 KoreAm Special Rain Edition Journal that was released at the same time.

The differences in the June magazine cover and the Rain edition are pretty obvious. This one has background graphics, Special Edition, and his printed autograph added on. And it is ALL RAIN—no additional magazine articles and whatnot, only 28 pages of Rain, Corina Knoll’s terrific article, and images to die for from the Asian leg of the tour, all on thick, sturdy, glossy card stock. You can see a representation of a few of those images in the gallery below.

Big hugs and all our gratitude to a lovely friend and unique lady, Heart888, for donating this edition and quite a few other items to our Cloud USA stash. ♥

So, now that you know what’s being given away in celebration of our first anniversary, how in the world do you actually win it? We admit we’ve been somewhat hard on you in the past, but this time it will be relatively simple. Here are The Rules:

PLEASE READ THESE CAREFULLY!

• To be as fair to the timezone issue as we can, this contest will begin at 8 pm this evening, Eastern Standard time.

• This giveaway is only open to Cloud USA community members who either subscribed to the media blog OR joined the forum BETWEEN January 21, 2010 and January 20, 2011. To be eligible, you had to have signed up in either place BEFORE today.

• Our lovely Queen of GIFs, forum moderator Katie/Purplezest has chosen a number between 1 and 75. The member whose media blog comment falls on that number in this post thread will be declared The Giveaway Winner. We’re not going to tell you what that number is, because again, we want to be fair. No waiting around, counting the comments, and then saying something at the last minute, y’all!

NO comments will be counted that are made before the start time above (8 pm this evening).

• This is an open thread, so you can talk about whatever you’d like. (Emphasis on the word “talk.” You’re not limited to how many comments you can make; do have normal conversation amongst yourselves.

However: A bunch of one to three word comments that say “I love Rain” or “Gahh” or “Blehhh”, or the same comment cut-and-pasted all in a row are cop-outs and will only get you disqualified.) 😛

See?  Easy-peasy!

Incidentally, if you already have this book, be nice and let someone else win it, okay?

Thank you all for taking time out of your busy days and spending it with us, and for being so kind to our site. Without you, Cloud USA would be only that—just a site, and not a warm, vibrant community of people who love and support Rain and each other. We will continue to support sister Rain sites here and around the world to the best of our ability. We will do our best to make 2011 even more interesting and fun for you, as Cloud USA evolves.

Everyone synchronize your watches for 8 pm EST, and happy commenting!

With much love—

Stephe ^@@^ and Terri :-}

The Re[mark]able Forum’s special Project for Rain.

•January 20, 2011 • 5 Comments

Hello, all…!

Over at the Remarkable pop music Forum, based out of Germany, a part of their team is going to the Dresden Music Festival this upcoming May, to attend Rain’s and cellist Jan Vogler’s concert. They will be putting together a scrapbook album for Rain of messages and letters to show him how he is loved in Germany, Europe, and the rest of the world. They are graciously including any international fans and/or World Clouds who also wish to participate in their project.

What a terrific idea. 🙂

So, if anyone wishes to support Rain’s Dresden appearance with a picture, poem, piece of fan art, or message about JiHoon himself or about the rain in general, in the Remarkables scrapbook album (they prefer submissions in either English or German), head on over to the Project for Rain thread (written in English and German) on their forum HERE and read the project details, so you can get started. The deadline is April 11th.

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to leave a comment there or contact the Admin at the Remarkable email address listed in their post.

Thank you, Re[mark]able team, for supporting JiHoon in Germany!

[article] Jay Chou thinks Asian actors working in Hollywood films is inspiring.

•January 20, 2011 • 10 Comments

Khmer Magazine (Cambodia) 1/19/2011 — by Khmer Stars

Taiwanese actor Jay Chou commented on his fellow Asian actors advancing into Hollywood at a press conference for his movie, “Green Hornet 3D,” held at the Shilla Hotel in Seoul.

A reporter asked, “Kwon Sang Woo could have been cast for your role, how do you think that influences the movie’s success or failure?“, to which he replied, “As a fellow Asian actor, no matter who goes to film a movie in the Hollywood market, it is an inspiring and amazing act.”

He also stated, “I have seen Rain’s Hollywood films. As an Asian actor, I hope to appear in more Hollywood films alongside Rain.”

A reporter then mentioned that his monolids gave off a strong gaze, just like Rain’s, to which Chou replied to the amusement of the rest, “I’m very different from Rain. I can’t dance as well as he does, and I don’t have muscles.”

He continued, “But I have worked hard to create many amazing action movies. I hope the Korean audience will watch them.”

Chou concluded, “A lot of Asian actors are working hard to make their mark in Hollywood, and comparing such efforts is meaningless. I don’t think I have the peace of mind to think of such things.”

Chou and his castmates arrived in Korea on the 18th for a three-day promotional period. The group will be returning to Taiwan on the 20th.

•January 19, 2011 • 33 Comments

[ETA 1/21: So now, we all know that the Man was HERE, at Les Deux Magots (“The Two Chinese Merchants”… thanks, Terri, for helping with the French). And HERE is an English write-up on the shop and restaurant. It is a regular haunt for writers and artists, so if we were Parisians, you know we’d hit that place up daily just to hobnob with our writerly kinfolk. ^@@^]

MTV Style 1/19/2011 —

The Hottest Hustler of the Day: Korean cutie Rain

People are torn over what makes singer/actor Rain hot. Some say it’s his killer dance moves. Others say it’s his charming smile. And another set of fans say it’s his rock solid abs? We’re probably biased, but we definitely think it’s his amazingly-chic style. The singer arrived at a Cartier jewelry fair in Switzerland last night wearing a sleek black tux, crisp white button-up shirt, gray and white striped tie, lace-up shoes, and a brown leather watch. We love how he oozes confidence, sex appeal, and all-around badass-ery (plus, he gets brownie points for winning a MTV Movie Award for his performance in Ninja Assassin!). What do you think?

Do you like Rain’s cool and confident style?
