TVXQ’s Yunho visits Rain in the army
Recently, TVXQ‘s Yunho paid a visit to his sunbae Rain, who is currently serving in the army.
An online community board shared this photo of the two stars and an unidentified third person. Rain’s fans were happy to see that their favorite star was looking well, and expressed gratitude towards Yunho for paying a visit despite his busy schedule.
As for Yunho, it looks like he got a new hairstyle; he grew out his hair and dyed it a caramel blond color.
Netizens commented, “Yunho has loyalty”, “It’s so cute to see a soldier holding up a peace sign”, and “I hope to see more celebrities visit their sunbae soon!”

According to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the market share for Korean films was 51.9%, up from 46.5 in 2010 and marking the first time in modern history that Korean moviegoing audiences showed a marked preference for domestic movies. As well, film exports increased by 14% in 2011…

Before leaving the army, my daughter’s senior posed for a photo with Rain, and the senior put the
photo that presents himself and Rain together on Face Book.
The part of the image showing the senior was edited and cut off to protect his privacy right.
From what the senior left the army a couple of days ago, I conclude it is Rain’s latest photo.

So the “I’m too hot” mystery statement is solved. And it makes perfect sense.
As you saw, finding lyrics for our latest Song of the Week on the Internet was a no-go. Thank goodness Terri has the Eternal Rain album—what a lifesaver (thanks, chingu!). She scanned the Korean and Japanese lyrics from her album booklet, so that I could type up a hard copy of the Hangeul from that. Absolutely nothing good came from putting the Hangeul into any Internet translator—yuck—and so then it was our colleague JungBae to my rescue, from HelloKPop. (Thanks Jung! You are made of Awesome, buddy.)
Here are the English, Korean, and Japanese lyrics to Track 7, “Because I Was Too Hot” on the Eternal Rain album (his second album released in Japan) in 2006. Hope everyone enjoys them.

[Iconic Rain] Aljazeera English Reports on South Korea’s Pop Wave

I thought I’d share this thought-provoking report from AlJazeeraEnglish, 101 East, on The Korean Wave. I found it to be pretty interesting. I hope you do too.
Although, I must say that the talk about the K-Pop industry needing diversity was a little silly. Frankly, couldn’t pop music everywhere on the planet use a little more diversity? But that’s never going to happen. Why? Well, the underlying driver of pop music is its popularity, which is mostly manufactured by genius management companies and labels. Yes, even here in the States.
Here in the U.S.A., raw and extremely talented independent musicians struggle every day for face-time against slick, industry-created flavors-of-the-month. Just like they do in South Korea. Recognizing the fact that we need more diversity and originality in entertainment is greatly appreciated, but what does it matter if the powers-that-be don’t think it will sell? It doesn’t. Not in the least.
And yes, in case you’re wondering, there is a mention of Rain in this report as the iconic figure we all know him to be. :-}

Awesome K-Pop Moment of the Week: B.A.P.’s Warrior

For those of you who have been living under a rock (translation: only looking at Rain or MBLAQ stuff), did you know that a new boy group called B.A.P, from TS Entertainment debuted a few days ago? Yes, B.A.P is making a huge splash on the K-Pop scene in South Korea right now. Why? Because they’ve totally got it goin’ ON. That’s why.
Which is also why Cloud USA has chosen B.A.P’s new music video of their song, Warrior, as our Awesome K-Pop Moment of the Week.

The group’s name, B.A.P, is an acronym for “Best, Absolute, Perfect,” and for once in my life, I wholeheartedly agree. Every performance I’ve watched of these guys absolutely screams “the best.” In Korean, the word bap means “food” or “rice”. And after watching them for awhile, I am totally buying into the concept that B.A.P will be a serious source of sustenance for their fans. Clever.
In my humble opinion, the makers of this MV did everything absolutely right. The production values are awesome. The combination of hip-hop and dub-step elements gave me an exciting rush. The Deadmau5-looking creepy bunny, the skulls, the sledgehammering and the other stark elements of the staging created an ominous warrior-like feel that was perfect for the song without making it too dark for a group with members as young as these guys are. The strong vocals, the incredible choreography, the costuming, the styling mesmerizes.
Even the lyrics of the song are spectacular. Despite the obviously promotional elements presented at the beginning of the MV, the song is cleverly deceptive (as is most hip-hop). But if you’re listening carefully, then you can easily imagine a country full of soldiers being oppressed by living under the constant threat of war, a country in desperate need of youthful rebellion. Intriguing words coming from a South Korean boy group, don’t you think? Kudos to the collaborators of this song:

- Composers: Gang Ji Won, Gim Gi Beom
- Arrangement: Gang Ji Won
The only complaint I had was with the ending. What is it with these boy groups and killing somebody off at the end of their music videos? I mean, why is that necessary? Sigh.
Another thing that also impressed me was TS Entertainment’s handling of B.A.P’s promotional activities. The pre-debut buzz on these guys was so strong that they were able to perform their debut showcase in front of 3,000 Korean and international fans. Not only did TS Entertainment create a nice website for the boys under their label, but they also created a facebook page, and a RootBand page as well.
Currently, they are also featuring Warrior on their YouTube channel. And believe it or not, their album is now available for purchase on iTunes. Imagine that. Other companies would do well to emulate TS Entertainment with their own groups (J.Tune Camp and Rainy Entertainment, are you listening?).
Congratulations to B.A.P and T S Entertainment for a job well done. Go forth and conquer.

A Long Drought (or, when your Ultimate Bias reports to the MMA.)
I didn’t really care about it when it was Hyun Bin. I was slightly waylaid when The Heech did it suddenly. But now, it’s personal. About thirty minutes ago, Jung Ji Hoon (Rain/비) reported to the Republic of Korea’s Military Manpower Association (MMA) to begin his mandatory two-year conscription. As I write this, I’m listening to “Instead of Saying Goodbye” and trying not to weep like a school-girl. Much to my surprise, I think the school-girl in me may win.
As you all know, Rain is my ultimate bias. Besides his dual personality of strong and sweet masculinities, his music got me through some wily times of transition. In particular, his song “My Way” became my anthem in late 2010. A song about Rain’s own path to self-actualization and an announcement of his motto (Endless effort, Endless endurance, Endless modesty), as I played this song over and over again, it ended up as a soundtrack to positive changes in my own life. It sounds cheesy when I write this, but it was Rain’s music that made me feel like I, too, was free to make my own path (something that I’d forgotten, apparently). And I have – these past two years (the same two years I’ve been listening to Kpop) have been witness to many a change and the realization of dreams and goals.
When folks find out that I like kpop and I tell them Rain is my favorite, they often ask me, “why Rain?” Now, I’m not going to lie and say “abs? what abs?,” and the fact is, I like Rain because he works HARD. Like, HARD. At first it was all “dang, he is killing it on that song ‘Ways to Avoid the Sun,’” but then I started finding videos about his childhood. About him losing his mom. About his tortuous audition with Jin Young Park… not to mention the tom-foolery that none of us would put up with for a movie. As we move forward in his head-spinning career, we then see of course, that when it comes to the ever-growing transnational nature of Kpop, the fact is that Rain did it all FIRST. It is not lost on me that while the KPK is planning to head to SMTOWN NYC at Madison Square Garden, it was Rain who did it first. It is also not lost on me that while G.NA, Beast and 4Minute visited MTV(K) and were broadcast yesterday, Rain…did it first…for MTV’s Total Request Live (that’s MTV America, y’all). The first Korean artist to pull a actor/singer/dancer career off ? Hmm mmm, yea, that’s Rain. Let’s not even get into Ninja Assassin… Lots of folks were surprised to know that he was a star in his own right before he snagged the role of Raizo – including his co-star…
I also like Rain because he is smart. Like, SMART. As they say on Tumblr, I SEE WHAT U DID THERE, Rain. He worked the star and military systems like a boss. You see how he worked on a film that afforded him Air Force Training? You see how he wrapped up filming for The Red Muffler/Soar into the Sky/Take Off: Closer to the Sun/WHATEVER IT’S CALLED right before he reported to MMA?! Did you see that?! Yea, that movie won’t release til next year sometime…so he will be in the public eye, as a celebrity, WHILE HE’S SERVING IN THE MILITARY! My UB is a business *genius*. I’m not even going to get started on the founding of J.Tune Entertainment or the care and feeding of the hot group, MBLAQ!
This is the thing: I don’t know why I feel compelled to even write about this. It’s not like I didn’t know he was going to go. He’s a Korean male and a Korean citizen; therefore he *must* report. I saw all the reports saying when he was going to head to the military, including the one saying exactly when he was going to go! It just didn’t seem real, I suppose. Seeing him up on that stage at the military gate thanking the fans for their support just did me in. I just kept thinking Color Purple style: “What us gon’ do?!” My only hope is that as much as we’ve seen The Heech here, there, and everywhere in the past few weeks, SURELY Rain will be coming to us live once a week, telling us all about how they hooked him up with his own barracks, mess hall, and laid-out latrine…right? …Right?!
*sigh*
Perhaps you’ve already gone through this with your favorite idol(s). If you have, how did you deal? I mean, I have all of Rain’s music, of course, and I’ve saved all of his videos in special YouTube playlists…and of course when his new movie is available, I’ll watch it as soon as I’m able to. For now, I’m going to do my best to not retreat into a closet with my Ninja Assassin DVD, Rainism CD, and a couple of green glass bottles.
And to Rain, I know your family is proud of you, and that you’ll do your best to train and protect your fellow citizens and defend the Land of the Morning Calm. The KPK – and I – will be here when you return.

Just came back from my trip to Berlin – and this time i saw him.

We went to the Studios Babelsberg like we did last Aug while he was doing Speed Racer there. The area is quite open for public, cause there is a restaurant inside where you can eat and drink and sit outside, having a good view what is going on. I met there also the guy and the gal again who are working there and with whom i already chatted last year, they did recognize me and were such friendly like last time. They told me everybody from staff and all othere ppl there like him very much he is easy going and friendly. Ninja Assassin is working with nearly 100% the same staff as for Speed Racer. They told me as he was arriving for NA everybody was happy to see him again and he was hugging with the most.
We could walk around quite freely, just not entering anything, we could see the trailer park, the catering, and saw at an open studio door ppl enrolling a green screen, and on the other side we saw a tiny little bit of a set, not very surprising, part of a wall of a Japanese(?) traditional house. And we could look in the open but empty make up trailer, and through the open door of the costume trailer we could see hanging some clothes. I decided to tell this here all openly, cause the Studios have a movie tour where ppl like in Hollywood get driven through the area by an open train, and they could all see the same things. Though this can not be very secret.
But no Rain—no where.
2008.05.23
At that day in the afternoon we got the information where they are shooting right now! Not at the Studios, outside in Berlin. Okay palli palli [빨리 빨리 quickly quickly — Stephe ^@@^] back to Berlin to the set. We arrived there around 5pm, and could see on the first sight, this is the right palce and they are still working.
All there, a lot of cars we saw at the studios before, trailer park, catering, technical staff, security, all what is there when Hollywood is shooting a movie. Though we started to wait outside, the shooting was indoor, no chance to see anything, but the area itself, we had nearly unblocked view on it. At around 7pm the catering was carrying huge amount of water and food inside, so we came to the conclusion, they will not ending shooting such soon. We rushed to the hotel, put on some warmer stuff and were back at around 8:15 pm.
At around 9pm a lot of ninjas started to come out of the set. Real ninjas in the tradtional ninja costume. We get prepared, and more and more excited. And then finally—he appeared and he crossed the area from set to the trailers which is quite far and we had a real good sight on him even though it was not near. He was dressed casual, as you see on the pics of the next day. The hair was black, and same length as we saw before. He looked very dark, i mean his skin. He looked very very tanned, but i think make up. He was in very good mood, kinda not walking more “jumping” like a young boy, and he was waving to somebody at the catering area, from far. He looked relaxed and happy. Think propably the shooting at this day went fine ^^. Then he vanished from sight between the trailers.
We kept on waiting, because we wanted to see him leave the area.
Around 45-50 mins later, he got in his car and the car was approaching the gate we were standing.
I was at the side where he was sitting in the back. (good for me cause all was very fast) The window was open, the light in the back was on, though i had a great sight at him, especially he was putting with both hands his hair behind his ears at this moment. He did not look at us but i have kinda feeling he maybe did open the window for us , i want to believe this. And his skin was back to his normal color.

The next day we decided to give it a try, even though it was saturday, and we arrived there at around 8am in the morning. (the early bird catches the worm)
We could clearly see shooting day again. Already staff there, and cars are coming. As we approached the main gate we recognize the security guy from last day. And we greeted him friendly “Guten Morgen” and he did greet back so we were encouraged to start a chat. He was asking us whom we are waiting for, and we told him. And another security guy was coming, he seemed to be the boss, and we asked him will Rain work today? And he said: “Yes he will!” We went on chatting, they asked us where we are from and how we know about him. They were really impressed. The 2nd one told us, he is a really nice person, very carefree, very friendly. Before the shooting, while the location observing, he went with him all over Berlin. He was very friendly and acted not like a star, acted like normal person.
We kept on waiting, and then… at around 9am his car passed the gate. It was very fast, but i could see him sitting inside, in the back, wearing white t-shirt with blue and red.
The security guy told us, the dressing and make up might take ~1h, which was true. HIHI “painting” him needs a lot of time.
Then ppl appeared and crossed the area, going to set. And then as the last one—he came. Walking calmly, think talking on phone over to the set. Same costume as the day before.This time i managed to take a pic.
When he vanished inside, it was time for us to leave and go for breakfast. (one of the security guys did bring us a cup of coffee from the catering before, how sweet)
At around 1pm we were back (we had to reg as cloud meanwhile). When we reached we could see the staff, and actors having lunch. We could not see him.
At around 2:30 pm ppl started to go back to the set. This time, not the way they took in the morning. We see them come, they turned left and we could see them walking from the back, to a set somewhere behind the hall. We saw the Wachowski brothers walking this way. And Yun the co-actor in ninja costume. A lot of ninjas. Then a person looking like him. Wearing the same costume, all the same but too short legs NOT HIM!—his double! Then after the directors already passed, one appeared—runnig to set. We: is this him ??? why is he late??? But—2nd double—
Shortly after he appeared! and this time we could clearly see it was him. He was again walking calmly, no hurry, same costume, but we just could see him from back. But better as not.
At around 5:30pm we did leave. The security guy told us, he will not walk back to trailers later, he will get picked by car from behind and leaving directly this time. This meant we will not be able to see him properly, though we decided to leave. We were already lucky we saw him 5 times. That was great. And he told us too, that on sunday will be no shooting. Day off for all! On Wednesday they will finish at this set. He told us too.
The security was very very friendly and nice, They did as much they could did for us in their position. Bi’s driver is directly from the Studio, and he was very protective, he always had an eye on us, he watched every step of us.
Though sunday was no shooting, we had off too, to go around in Berlin, going back to the palces Bi was last summer and do our personal-rain-berlin-shooting.

This direct-translates as “I’m Too Hot” in English… but seeing as he’s asking the girl in this song to take him back, that translation (or he) may be a tad off. 🙂

SONG OF THE WEEK: “Slowly”, the B-side of Rain’s first Japanese single release “Sad Tango” (January 2006). Yes, yes, yes, more Rain singing in sexy Japanese, with Spanish subs for our Latin sisters. Released in Japan instead of Korea, and we can certainly see why. His hometown censors would have ridden him out of town on a rail over this one. You’re just straight up BAM in the middle of doing it, and it is glorious. @__@ ♥
I know that there are already English lyrics out there, but I don’t like them. There’s nothing wrong with them really, they’re just too direct-translated and not natural enough speech-wise to my taste for this dripping wet and utterly amazing song. Looks like Baby Boy is back from having a little bit of R&R. Good for him. So funny how the media makes a big deal about the black mask/muffler thing… Of course he was wearing that, silly people. That’s what you do when it’s colder than hell outside, unless you want your face to freeze off. It just so happens that it also works well in helping him be obscure and just “one of the guys.” When people know that it’s Rain standing over there, he has to be “on stage” and aware of every little thing he does and says, even while enlisted. He can’t even scratch an itch without knowing a picture or an account of him scratching will end up in all the social media across the planet either now or later.
I can bet you JiHoon treasures his alone time these days (when he’s absolutely completely alone with no one anywhere around him) like gold, because those are the only times he can truly exhale and not be a perfect human being. I also think he’s found a few friends in the service who make him laugh and keep him from swinging about in the wind on his own like a wind chime. He has that effect on people—draws them in like a magnet. Just my buck-fifty.
