SONG OF THE WEEK: “나쁜 남자 (Nappeun Namja) / Bad Guy”, Track 3 on 비’s debut album n001 (2002). It was clear that there was something unmistakably special about the kid when FanClub hit the scene, but when the man showed everyone his Bad side, you knew that a star had been born.

Corporal Rain (Jung Ji Hoon) posing in front of the F-15K he had flied in the film “R2B : Return To Base” starring him.
Corporal Rain (Jung Ji Hoon) posing in front of one of F-15Ks which are the most powerful airplanes in our air force.
They could not stop clicking the shutter at his splendid performance.
Corporal “Jung Ji Hoon” sending his greetings to the audience before his special performance.
World star Rain (Jung Ji Hoon) performed in public on the day when he was promoted to corporal.
Corporal Rain or “Jung Ji Hoon” put a special performance at “Black Eagle Show With The People” held on 1 September. He performed as a soldier, not as an entertainer, but his passion and the cheers from the audience have not changed over the years.
Rain’s starring in film “R2B : Return To Base” shot before his enlistment, provided an opportunity for him to perform at this air show. He showed a high degree of aerial action acting skill in the film, playing a fighter pilot who belongs to Black Eagle team and who flies a F-15K.
Q : Where do you belong? What have you recently done?
Rain : I’ve been fulfilling my military duty as a PR soldier belonging to the Defense Media Agency. That’s all.
(But they say Rain is still popular as more than 300 fan letters are sent to him per week.)
Q : “R2B : Return To Base” starring you, is now playing at the theater. What are the main points to ponder in this movie?
Rain : This is our country’s first attempt at aerial action film. Indeed, there’s often so much to take in.
Q : I’ve heard this movie is a remake of a 1960’s movie called “Red Muffler” which had become very popular at that time. They say this movie is Korea’s version of ”Top Gun”. What do you think about this movie?
Rain : Thank you for comparing this movie with Top Gun, but I think it is our country’s own aerial action movie. It’s a Korean aerial blockbuster.
Q : I heard you had received a G-test drill for the movie. Wasn’t it hard to be trained?
Rain : During the G test, a force that’s over nine times my weight was applied to my body. Actually, it was too hard to bear, but I felt rewarded after doing it.
(It is said he was the first ordinary person to do it in Korea.)
Q : This movie got 4 and 2.5-star ratings from the audience and critics, each. What do you think of the film?
Rain : I watched the movie when I had a vacation a couple of days ago. To make a long story short, that was a very interesting movie. Nothing in this world is perfect, but I’d like to give it four out of four.
Q : If you were to choose between “Black Eagles or “Air Wing”, which one would you rather prefer?
Rain : I like both of them. Soldier is soldier, does not matter whether I serve in “Black Eagles or “Air Wing” or the Army.
Q: Your flight suit went well with your sunglasses. Have you regretted not joining the air force?
Rain : I tried to join the air force, but one thing came to another, and the opportunity arrived for me to join the army. But it was never meant to hate the army.
Q: There are lots of PR soldiers in the Defense Media Agency. Is there anybody you want to model yourself after?
Rain : There is nobody I want to model myself after. I’ve been serving in the army in my own way. I’ve been getting along with Sgt “Park Hyo Shin”, Pfc “Kang Chang Mo”, etc.
(Rain seems to hate it when he is compared with someone. He is still a very conceited individual, despite being a soldier)
—
[*Stephe’s Note: And to that, I say this: When my son was a very young teen, I asked him if he wanted a Big Brother, so that I could get him into the program. But he didn’t want a Big Brother. He wanted to BE a Big Brother. And that’s what he did, mentor to younger children who needed him and helped them grow up. Not everyone wants to be led, and few people like being compared to someone else rather than being accepted on their own merit. To this day, my son marches to his own beat the same way Rain does, and does not appreciate comparisons. I don’t know where this person gets conceit out of that, if indeed that’s what they meant. Perhaps they meant proud; Rain is that, and he darned well should be. Some people want to examples to follow, and some people want to BE an example. All that is, is being human. Folks need to give that some thought. ^@@^]
[*Stephe’s Note 9/5/12: Since I posted this article, there has been some talk across the landscape about the article writer’s sentences in question (이전 질문에서도 느꼈지만 정지훈 상병은 누구와 비교하는 것, 또 비교 당하는 것을 꺼리는 듯 했다. 군인이었지만 스스로에 대한 자부심은 여전해 보였다) and, in particular, the word 자부심 (jabushim) or 자부심은 (jabushim-eun). There was concern that perhaps this was a lost in translation problem, and that the writer may not have meant to insult Rain. There were even a few other translations of said sentence offered. Example: “I felt it in my previous question that comparing Corporal Jung Ji-hoon to anybody else is a taboo. Although he’s a soldier, his self-confidence seems undeniable.” Example: “Rain seems to be uncomfortable being compared with someone. He is still very much his own person, despite being a soldier.” Example: ” Rain is a soldier now, but his self respect, self confidence is the same as ever.”
Which is why I pointedly said in my earlier note, if indeed that’s what they meant. Going from Korean to English and vice versa is very tricky because one word in either language can have umpteen different meanings, depending on context. It is nerve-wracking, and we are so grateful to 화니 for her hard work translating Rain news.
Some of the translations for the terms 자부심 and 자부심은 are: pride, self-conceit, self-esteem, great pride in oneself/ourselves, self-importance, self-confidence, high opinion of oneself, thinking highly of oneself, and self-respect. So, I’m afraid what this means is that only the writer and Rain know exactly what the writer meant here. With this information, you can all decide for yourselves what your own opinion is concerning the writer’s intent. Frankly, if Rain had not seemed as tight as he did to us, and the tone of some of the questions not been off-putting (I would think Rain not being in DEMA yet when “Cool Guy” came out would be common Media knowledge, for one example), we would have been less inclined to think anything of it. As it is, the human thing to do is give the writer the benefit of the doubt because of the language barrier, although, make no mistake, I do stand by my earlier note. ^@@^]
INTERVIEW CONTINUES BELOW. ↓
—
Q : Recently, the department of defence made a military music video called “Cool Guy”, and it was very popular with the people. You wasn’t asked by the department to appear in the video, so didn’t this offend you?
Rain : When the video was shot, I wasn’t in the Defense Media Agency yet. I was serving as a teaching assistant at that time. I think good soldiers such as Sgt “Park Hyo Shin” successfully completed the work.
Q : If enemy planes show up in the sky over Seoul like a scene from the film, what should you do?
Rain : If I were a fighter plot, I would fly a combat plane and fight with those enemies, but I think I should boost soldiers’ morales as I am a PR soldier.
Q : What will you do to do fine as a soldier?
Rain : I’ll do everything I’m obligated to do. Personally I’m eager to be promoted to the rank of sergeant like every other soldier. By having first hand experience of how hard soldiers have worked, I’ve realized their dedication is so admirable, and I’m so proud to be a soldier.

I can certainly believe this because, as Terri recently reported, R2B: Return to Base was the third-highest grossing movie at our AMC Colonial 18 theater here in Atlanta last week, and it’s up against The Expendables 2, ParaNorman, and a bunch of other stuff. And this theater is in a pretty diverse area. Well, all right then. GO, Rain. 🙂

HanCinema 9/1/2012 —
The Korean film industry is having a renaissance recently, with renewed success at the domestic box office.
Local films topped the country’s top-ten box office chart last weekend, with Korean movies taking up all first four places in ticket sales.
According to statistics provided by the Korean Film Council on August 27, nearly eight out of ten moviegoers watched Korean films last weekend. The four Korean blockbuster films – “Neighbors”, “The Grand Heist“, “The Thieves”, and “R2B: Return to Base” in that order – made up 77 percent of ticket sales over the weekend from August 24 through 26.
It can be almost called a resurgence of Korean films as they are taking away ticket sales from recent Hollywood blockbusters such as Total Recall, Step Up Revolution, and The Dark Night Rises. Such success comes for the first time in three years since 2009 when two Korean films – “Take Off”and “Haeundae” – swept the Korean box office.
“Neighbors”, a thriller featuring Hollywood actress Kim Yoon-jin, drew a crowd of 782,229 over the weekend, taking up 31.1 percent of ticket sales in monetary value. The movie is about a serial killer and a girl slain by the man and neighbors who came to realize the existence of the killer. The film was adapted from a webtoon of the same title by Kang Pool. Its view count surpassing one million in only five days, the cumulative view count stands at 1,095,746, according to the film council. It is considered a huge success considering that the film is rated R19. “The Grand Heist“, an action film set in the Joseon Dynasty starring actor Cha Tae-hyeon, took second place in the same weekend. The film is a heist story about taking revenge against a greedy aristocrat who took control of the ice supply. The film attracted 537,470 viewers over the weekend.
Next is “The Thieves”, which has already garnered 12,095,090 viewers by adding 513,823 over the weekend. There has been a lot of talk over whether it may break the record as the highest-grossing Korean film. The current record is 13 million by “The Host” in 2006.
The plot centers on a gang of Korean and Chinese thieves gathered in Macau by legendary thief Macao Park played by Kim Yoon-seok to steal a USD 20 million diamond. However, it turns out that they all want to keep the diamond for themselves. There are a series of reversals that add to the fun of watching the film.
“R2B: Return to Base“, an action film starring K-pop singer and actor Rain, is about a group of fighter pilots battling enemies over the skyscrapers of Seoul. The new action film has been purchased by over 30 nations already.
The Korean film market share stood at 53.4 percent in the first half of this year, and it inched up a bit in July to 57.7 percent. In the first 26 days of August, the figure rose to 69.3 percent.
According to the Korean Film Council, Korean films’ share climbed to 51.9 percent for the whole of 2011, the first time the figure reached 50 percent since hitting 49.9 percent in 2007. However, the figure dropped to 42.8 percent in 2008, climbing to 48.7 percent in 2009 and declining again to 46.6 percent in 2010. From January through August in 2012, local films’ share reached 55.3 percent, and for the entire year the figure is expected to easily surpass last year’s.
The increased share is largely attributed to a series of box office hits beginning early this year. Local films released in the first half such as “Architecture 101“, “Dancing Queen”, “Everything about my Wife“, “Deranged”, and “Nameless Gangster” all drew more than four million viewers each.
“The number of total viewers (including double count) by the end of this year is expected to hit 170 million”, said Kim Ui-suk, chairman of the Korean Film Council, in a recent interview. “The local film industry is expected to enjoy a boom this year, a kind of heyday the country experienced in the late 1960s”.
This is a relief to the local film industry, as the screen quota system that required local movie theaters to screen Korean films for a certain number of days per year has been reduced from 146 days to 106 in 1998 and again to 73 in 2006. Then, local film industry workers took to the streets and shaved their heads in protest of the quota reduction. Six years have passed since the last adjustment in the quota but Korean films are enjoying another boom. Even the screen quota seems unnecessary. Korea is one of the few countries in the world where locally made films survive against Hollywood blockbusters and enjoy such a high market share.
A number of factors are attributed to the recent success. Diverse genres of films are able to attract viewers in their 30s and 40s. According to Maxmovie, a film reservation website, those in their 30s or older accounted for 73 percent of reserved ticket sales for “The Thieves”, while the rest was taken up by those in their teen and 20s. The extreme heat during this summer also played a role. “The number of viewers increased compared to the same period last year”, a CGV employee said in an interview. “A long hot summer led to an increase in night viewers and many of them chose Korean films after hearing their reputation through word of mouth”.

As some of you may know, BbaekGa (a.k.a. Sunghyun Paek, Baek Sunghyun) is an accomplished photographer in addition to being a well-known rapper (member of group Koyote, 2005 Korean Grammy Artist of the Year) and stylist.
After beating the dangerous brain tumor that got him discharged from the Army, he had fallen back on his photography skills in 2010 in Korea and in the States, and was doing a magnificent job of it even before Koyote’s August 2011 comeback.
Recently, Leica Camera released a terrific clip showcasing BbaekGa and what makes his photography tick. They’re also featuring BbaekGa on the home page of their website. An interesting tidbit revealed by this is that, apparently, he was involved in Rain’s huge MCM photo shoot back in 2011. Amazing.
Congratulations on your success and prosperity, BbaekGa. And thanks for tweeting your new Leica clip!

Rain’ll put on a performance to celebrate Black Eagle’s championship tomorrow
An Air Force spokesman said on the 31st, “With more than 5,200 people such as the public, airmen, government officials, national defense officials, etc. in attendance, ‘Black Eagle Air Show With The People’ will be held at Seoul Airport in Seongnam City on September 1st.”
The Air Force’s peculiar aerobatic team “Black Eagle” attended an air show in UK, which was held from June 30th until July 15th, and won the first prize with an award as the most popular team.
On the first of next month, an aerobatic display to celebrate their championship will be followed by celebrations with a concert featuring singer Rain belonging to the Defense Media Agency, with military band’s performances, and with Black Eagle pilots’ signing event for their fans.

Well, according to the manager of the AMC Colonial 18, R2B: Return to Base was the theater’s third highest grossing film this past week. Yes, you heard that right. In its very first week at the Atlanta box office, R2B: Return to Base landed in the #3 spot!
So, which movies came in at #1 and #2? At the top of the heap was Obama’s America. No surprise there, since we’ve got an election coming up soon. In the number two spot was Joseph Gordon Levitt’s Premium Rush. And right behind that was R2B: Return to Base. In fact, if just 50 more people had seen R2B: Return to Base, then it would have actually beaten Premium Rush and would have taken the second place spot. It was that close. So, how about that, Clouds?
Because of its good performance, R2B: Return to Base will remain on the theater’s schedule until at least next Thursday, September 6. We are delighted.
Terri :-}

FAN ACCOUNT: My Second Viewing of R2B, 8.26.2012
By: Vicki / BiThatWay @CloudUSA
I must say that meeting BiAlamode and Gee this weekend was a “blast”! Their company was so enjoyable, and meeting BiAlamode’s mom was just icing on the cake. We recognized that we have multiple things in common other than just our dear Rain during our extended visit over lunch (thanks again, Gee).
RETURNED LATER FOR MORE RETURN TO BASE
My second viewing of R2B took place Sunday at 6:50 pm with a friend that just moved back to Texas from Colorado. She became a Cloud when I posted Bi’s video of “Nan” on her Facebook page last year, because I knew Lee Byung Hun was one of her favorite Korean actors and we both loved him in GI Joe—so I was certain that Rain was right down her alley!
When I told her about R2B: Return to Base being shown in the Dallas area, her first comment was, “What time are we going?”
I reached my destination — AMC Grapevine Mills — bit early and waited for her to arrive. There was quite a bit of construction on the freeway, so traffic was heavy in the area. On her arrival, we got our tickets and made an express stop at the concession stand, and then proceeded to find our target! (WHY have I been using aviation/pilot terms since I saw this movie? LOL!) We took our seats and made sure our seat belts were securely fastened before the movie started—kekeke (so they could be used as a flotation device if necessary).
As I looked down our row, I noticed seven or eight ajummas (some with the big sun visors on IN THE THEATER). They peeked around at us with an inquisitive look, too. A young family (Dad, Mom and about an 8 year old son) came in and chose seats directly in front of us—why did the little boy have on a blue sparkly tracksuit jacket like Kim Joo Won (Hyun Bin) in Secret Garden? I immediately smiled, then my eyes met his parents’ eyes and ALL THREE OF US burst out in laughter! My friend asked me, “Why does he have on that sparkly jacket?” My question to her was, “You haven’t seen Secret Garden, have you?” She replied no, so I told her she should place that on her DramaFever playlist.
As we watched the film, my friend asked multiple times, “Why is HE sooooooo sexy?” I said, “It is what it is, and IT is sexy! “ LMBO!
Well, at a crucial time in the movie, one of the ajummas’ cellphones rang REALLY loud. (annoying ringtone/at the bottom of her purse/ fumbling to find it) THEN she proceeded to answer it and have a fussy conversation—ending with the classic “aish” and “aigoo”. All eyes in the room were on her with heat seeking missiles ready to deploy! Once she was done, we all got off “high alert” and went back to “Alpha 1″ position, enjoying the beautiful thing that is Jung JiHoon on the big screen.
When Rain appeared in the scene where he has on a suit while borrowing his friend’s car, all we could say was…wait for it, Stephe… ROGER THAT! There were about 40 or 50 people in the theater this time, so I hope more were able to make the last showing of the day at 9:40 pm. I was disappointed in the theater not having any promotional items on hand, not even the normal posters in the hallway.
Thursday ends R2B’s “limited engagement.” Even if Bi’s movie isn’t here for a long period of time, I guarantee everyone who saw it was pleased and happy for him being able to have his feature film shown in the USA!
Over and out. Wah!
— Vicki (BiThatWay)

SONG OF THE WEEK: “Man Up”, featuring Rain, which was supposed to be a bonus track on Omarion’s second album Omarion 21 (2006). As I understand it, somebody screwed Omarion (of B2K fame) and Rain over and leaked the song, and that was the end of that. So far, I’ve never seen the song legally listed anywhere as a part of the album. As far as introductions went, Rain was back to square one in the U.S. 😦 I’ve always liked this fan made video because it has BOTH Rain and Omarion in it, as it should, not just one guy or the other. I’ve no idea how MTV and NYC didn’t just EXPLODE from these two hunks of cuteness mannin’ up for a project.
That’s gangsta. That’s gangsta, yeah.

ROFL at Rain and his trusty parachute, doing their own “stunt”… ahahahaha! And poor SeKyung was stumbling all over the place. Heaven blessed this cast with fun galore. 😀

[#9] From Stephe’s desk: My fantasy Rain playlist for the U.S. continued.
•September 5, 2012 • 14 CommentsWhen I’m rolling in my Excalibur Roadster Hyundai and listening to my very favorite songs, these are the sounds from my playlist—whether he were to do an occasional cover or match the vibe—that I think would have Rain lighting up our airwaves like a Christmas tree. (JiHoon, are you listening?)
What’s on your fantasy Rain playlist, dear fans? Why?

#42. Jeff Cascaro – I’m Talking To You Baby. Courtesy of fabaut99 @YT) Get your Jazz-on/croon-on, 비. Jazz musician Jeff Cascaro, of Germany, is the ticket. “Please, be mine. Please, be fine.”
#43. Jeff Cascaro – Waiting. (Courtesy of DirtySnares @YT) As if the vocals aren’t enough, these lyrics are pretty doggone amazing.
#44. Brothers Johnson – Strawberry Letter 23. (Courtesy of foutecd @YT)
#45. Earth Wind & Fire – Be Ever Wonderful. (Courtesy of luvinhappinezz @YT) Oh, my. A Rain version would be l-o-v-e-l-y. Oh, joy.
#46. Al Green – How Can You Mend A Broken Heart. (Courtesy of everth77 @YT) Put your own spin on this, JiHoon, and watch us all literally light up. You can borrow that good ol’ go to church Sunday morning organ music from “Nan” and make it s-w-e-e-t. “How can you stop the rain from falling…” Heheh. You can’t. 😉
#47. Anthony Hamilton – Love Is So Complicated. (Courtesy of ttlove92 @YT) Ain’t it, though?
