The Daily Hankook is reporting that bunches of illegally copied Ninja Assassin DVDs are circulating the worldwide market, with their titles altered. (We are not surprised.) The damage caused by this copyright infringement is expected to be huge.
Distributor Warner Bros. has stated that they do not yet know the exact source of the leak, but are working hard to find it. The report goes further to state that Rain’s agency—there is no specification as to which agency, J.Tune (Korea) or William Morris (USA)—says that Rain fans are are constantly providing useful information in finding these DVDS and illegal sites. The agency forwards those tips to Warner Bros., who takes care of the problem from there.

Check the date on your calendars, everyone.
It is Friday, 5:42 in the morning here in Atlanta, Eastern Standard Time, which means it is 7:42 pm, Friday evening in Seoul. Which means… Rain is about to take the stage at the 8th Annual Lotte Family Concert, and we can start the countdown to when the first fan cams from the event show up. (We hope they’re really good!) Rain, Tae Woo, and a handful of other stars will be belting out songs tonight; Girls Generation and another handful will be entertaining the audience on Saturday night.
Here’s to Rain putting on a great show.

In three days, on March 8th, the Nikon D5000 camera that Rain used to take photos of his fans for the latest Nikon commercial spots will be put up for auction on the www.realityrain.com mini site (it is in Hangul). The auction will reportedly start at 4 PM and last for six hours; people can bid in 1,000 Won ($.80) increments, and the camera will go to the highest bidder. The best part is—IF the reports are correct—Rain will deliver the camera to the highest bidder himself on the 14th, at the Nikon exhibition showcasing his fan photographs at the Star Cafe in Seoul.

There is a hot little snippet going around the Internet this morning because of an article that just came out of Money Today at NewsNate.com… The article is mainly an overview, it seems, on Korean men going in and out of the army these days, the terms they serve, why they must serve, et cetera. And apparently, in this piece, there is a one-sentence statement about Rain that translates:
“Hanryu star Rain also plans to join the army as early as this year or by the end of next year.” (Thanks, Rain Europe and Indulging In Rain’s World.)
As soon as one of our source sites writes about this or expounds on it, we’ll bring you that article. In the meantime, just remember: With Rain’s new albums coming out in April and October, the new drama J.Tune is talking about, as well as an encore concert overseas in the works, it sounds reasonable that he would set an end of this year or end of next year military date, because we’ll have plenty of fresh, finished Rain projects to keep us happy and waiting for him then. (The only problem would be if the military is pulling shenanigans behind the scenes right now to get those projects put on hold and Rain in uniform earlier than planned. Heaven forbid. At least let the man finish.)

It was super-cool to come upon YeinJee’s Asian Journal‘s post on the “Infinitely Yours, Seoul” campaign. Rain’s commercial spot heads the bunch. And following him is Daniel Henney, Hugh Jackman, Taiwan’s Ruby Lin, Girls’ Generation, TVXQ, and Super Junior. Nice job.

Back in January, Ellen DeGeneres’ search for international music suggestions was blogged about across the Internet. Well, though there are nearly 15,000 comments on the thread now, the suggestion form is still up and running on the show site, so go on over there and do your thing, put in a word for Rain. Ellen’s show has gotten crazy-popular, so Rain getting some exposure there certainly couldn’t hurt. Cloud USA has already told Ms. DeGeneres what we think, and hit the “send” button. Kpop Live.com 3/2/10—It’s hard to deny the fact that Korea’s Rain is one of the most influential Asian artists out there. He is known throughout Asia and just recently debuted on Hollywood screens. Due to that, Rain will be featured on the front cover of Real Korea magazine for April.

* Rain’s close friend, Koyote rapper and photographer Bbaek-Ga, is recovering nicely from his January surgery to remove a benign brain tumor, and will be returning to his photography profession (stay tuned for info on when—he is still being medically monitored). As we understand it, plans are for him to go to New York and work on a brochure and poster project for a designer who will be participating in the 2010 FW/New York Collection. (It is said that he also wishes to perform on stage with Koyote again, possibly. We are so pleased. Bbaek-Ga, fighting!)

But I still just about laughed myself into a stupor when I watched this really cute, really short CF from SK Telecom called “In A Word.” Maybe it was the mischievous WAY Rain answered the question, as if he were thinking, “I shouldn’t just blurt this out, but I know it and you know it.” LOL! And that look of innocence. Hilarious.

JoongAng Daily, 3/2/10—Korea’s male heartthrobs have made a series of successful moves into Hollywood in recent years. Singer and actor Rain has shot two movies – “Ninja Assassin” and “Speed Racer” – and 40-year-old film star Lee Byung-hun was featured in Stephen Sommers’ action flick “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.” Korean idol boy bands such as TVXQ, Big Bang and 2PM have risen to stardom across Asia, especially in Japan and many Southeast Asian countries.
This large-scale movement of Korean culture, widely dubbed by the local media as the Korean wave, or hallyu, can now be measured by a so-called “hallyu index,” which was devised by the Culture Ministry, in conjunction with the private Korea Foundation for International Culture Exchange, last week. » Read the entire article New Index for Korea’s Hallyu at JoongAng Daily HERE.

I’ve noticed that Forbes Korea.com sometimes shows the CEO cover or the Kim Yu-Na cover, at any given moment. The “current issue” switches back and forth, depending on whether or not you translate the page. You be your own judge.
Ijuksa. This Love I Want To Kill. The Love of Death. Detestable Love. Knocked Out by Love. This Damned Love. A Love To Kill. 이 죽일놈의 사랑 (I Juk-il-nom-ui Sa-rang). Doesn’t matter what you call it, or how it translates into other languages. In my humble opinion, this multi-layered and complicated piece of character-building is Rain’s finest achievement to date. Don’t get me wrong—Raizo in Ninja Assassin was an amazing piece of work, and Rain played him to the hilt, physically and emotionally. But because of the movie’s short length, he only had time to scratch the surface of Raizo’s many layers (if a Ninja Assassin 2 ever shows up, we are so in the money!), whereas 16 episodes with Bok-Gu allowed Rain to go as deeply as he possibly could into a character completely opposite the romantic, comedic ones he had played up to that point.
The scene where a devastated Bok-Gu destroys his brother’s livingroom in utter grief was brilliant—and painful. All I could think as I watched was how, in real life, a devastated, starving, and near-homeless Rain had gone home after his mom’s funeral in 2000 and torn the place to shreds in a rage. Because that is what actors do to make a scene work—they go to a place in their past that makes them feel the specific emotion they need to project. I knew I was actually watching him grieve for his mother. I remember him explaining to an interviewer once (and I paraphrase): “When I’m frustrated, or angry, or I want to hit someone because they’ve wronged me, I just hold it all in. And then when I’m shooting, I let it all go [on the set].”
I was checking my Korean news feeds this morning when I noticed several journalists had referenced A Love To Kill videos under their “what we’re watching” headers. And I felt the need to revisit this tragic tale (though I remember watching it just about killed me emotionally!). It will always be one of my very favorite KDramas and I’ll still be talking about it when I’m 90. Here are two excellent fan made MVs to whet your appetite if you haven’t had a taste of it yet. — Stephe ^@@^

We had no idea this had happened, until now. And it disturbs us.
°
Chosun Ilbo, 4/28/2008—Singer and actor Rain had an embarrassing moment at the premier of his Hollywood debut film “Speed Racer” at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles on Saturday. The 26-year-old Korean superstar was introduced as Taejo Togokhan, the name of his character in the movie, instead of his real name Jung Ji-hoon, or his better-known stage name…. Rain’s name mix-up wasn’t limited to just the announcement—he was also listed as “actor Taejo Togokhan” in the caption of a photograph of him with costar Susan Sarandon. The mistake would be like writing Sarandon’s name as “Mom Racer.”
We are simply dumbfounded as to how professionals could make such a disrespectful error. Talk about ruining Rain’s moment of triumph after he worked so hard to get there! It probably felt like they had dumped a bucket of cold water on him in front of everyone. We’re shaking our heads at how such a small moment of someone’s carelessness undoubtedly impacted his confidence in a huge way.
Rain and other talented people who come to the US to entertain us and spread goodwill should be given the same amount of care and consideration as American celebrities. Because they are not as well known here, or not American, is no excuse for substandard treatment.
— Stephe ^@@^
We’re so excited, we can barely stand it. I’ve no idea how we’re going to get through the next two weeks with our sanity intact. (To all the Ninja Assassin DVD and Blu-ray distributors out there: Do not delay in the delivery of this movie, I beg of thee. You don’t want NA fans and/or US Rain Clouds suddenly going Ozunu on you.) 😉
Do you have Raizo on order? Is everyone ready for March 16th?
— ^@@^
If Kang Bok-Gu, Rain’s tragic character in A Love To Kill, were a young, hip, Korean model… THIS photo shoot is what you would get. Rain was so deeply into Bok-Gu here, I’m guessing this had to have been done during ALTK filming or right after it wrapped. My goodness. This is not our Ji-Hoon at all. This is the dangerous K-1 fighter and violent thug that I would have been afraid to walk on the same side of the street with. This is the character that was so stuck on inner pain and self-destruction, I couldn’t help wanting to save him (from a distance). And Bok-Gu actually takes on an additional layer here without his bodyguard persona—one of physical beauty. I am stunned.
Rain’s acting range is incredible. It was during A Love To Kill, in fact, when I realized the man would have absolutely no problem playing Raizo.

Look! It’s a post from Terri! (If Stephe hasn’t beaten me to it again, that is…)
Way back in November 2009, Los Angeles correspondent Steve Weintraub sat down with Rain and Director James McTeigue to talk about Ninja Assassin, its Berlin location, the filming, and more. Somehow I missed that interview, but when I stumbled across it tonight, I rushed to share it with you. It’s a great little interview with these two very talented men–and it’s in ENGLISH.
Weintraub also mentions in the interview that McTeigue first screened the film at the 2008 San Diego International Comic-Con. For those of you who don’t know, this makes a lot of sense, because Ninja Assassin was filmed in a highly-stylized, film noir fashion, which gives the film a sort of anime/comic book feel. That was one of the reasons I was so taken with the film in the first place (besides being a “kick-ass” ninja movie and starring Rain, of course.)
» Here’s is the link to the interview video on the Collider website.
» And here’s a link to a terrific, on-target review of Ninja Assassin, by Alex Billington, who was on hand for a first look at the movie at Comic-Con ’08.
And as an extra treat: here is the HanCinema/Rain/McTeigue interview that took place on the same set as with Steve Weintraub (and just about every other journalist in Los Angeles). But we think this one is special because the interviewer spoke to McTeigue in English and to Rain in Korean, which meant she could ask more in-depth questions and both men could give much more intriguing answers. Rain was very comfortable and expressed himself well instead of worrying about his English (subtitles included).
Hope you enjoy,
Terri :-}

…to incorporate this knowledge into the marketing plans of their separate albums coming out in 4 to 5 weeks.
This article, “Future POP: The Future of The Music Biz in South Korea”, goes in depth with JYP concerning how record labels can no longer just “release an album” if that album is to make it. Albums are all but obsolete in South Korea, and JYP is having to build an entirely new type of business model from the one he successfully relied on back in the days of managing Rain. Separated at birth: Rain and “L”.
