Hello lovely Clouds,

Since we have so many new Clouds here on Cloud USA, and since I know how much everybody here loves watching Raizo in action, here’s Academy Award-winning special effects designer John Gaeta (Matrix, Speed Racer) talking with Boing Boing about the technology and the human talent behind Ninja Assassin.

Enjoy again, Clouds.

Runaway has been overwhelming in terms of scale.

•September 7, 2010 • 1 Comment

Medical Today’s My Star News reported some amazing Domanja/Runaway stats in their pages today.

According to the article, the director hired more than a thousand extras (which included Rain fans) and used more than 150 of the Runaway staff for an on-location shoot in Japan.  I do believe this refers to » the events surrounding the final stop on the 2010 Rain Love Tour, the concert that took place at Saitama Super Arena in mid-July.

Also, more than 200 staff in China, 150 staff in Macao, and 200 staff in the Philippines were brought on board.

With its high-tension chase scenes and beautiful location shoots all over China, Japan, and Macao, and with its well-rounded and diverse cast, Runaway can definitely be defined as not only a South Korean project, but an Asian one.

Were we wrong?

•September 7, 2010 • 24 Comments

"Ehh... hmm."

Make no mistake.  We are posting this video only because we admire how calmly the Philippines fans took Rain’s absence, and we appreciate how much understanding they showed him.  And thanks to Cloud Philippines for sharing this video with all Rain fans.  Paulette and Lou, congrats on making the cut.  And Odette too, for being in Da House!  So cool. 😀

What we don’t appreciate is how quick the media was to play up how Rain “snubbed” his press conference and fans.  Rain is finally in the Philippines after a really long time.  We assumed everyone was happy about that.  Were we wrong? 😡

During this entire nearly three-month overseas odyssey, we’ve all been privy to a gazillion news reports, entertainment clips, interviews, fan accounts, and Rain sightings on filming sets, hotels, and in the streets…

…and we have to say that in all of those countries we’ve never experienced the disdain and miscommunication that seems to be surrounding him right now.  And this could just be us, but he seems uneasy to boot.

Makes you wonder what Rain knows that we don’t.

“S’up shawty, where you at?”

•September 7, 2010 • 6 Comments

Cloud USA member Dianne (haleydd of Virginia) asked me the other day if we’d ever done a post about Atlanta’s tie to Rain’s Back To The Basic song “One.”  (Shawty, only one, one, one, ni sumkyeor hanado nohjil su obso [니 숨결 하나도 놓질 수 없어]…  Shawty is the South’s way of saying shorty, and it originated in our city.)

And I honestly couldn’t remember if we had or not.

I thought that, as excited as we were back during the Back To The Basic comeback stages about the Atlanta and New York ball caps, surely we did say something…  Oh well.  Just in case we didn’t, here are a few entries from the Urban Dictionary to get you acquainted with the term.

Terri and I have been thinking.  (Uh-oh… watch out! 😛 )  It occurred to us that there are probably times when you all may feel the urge to comment on a subject that has no current post.  Or you may want to simply communicate with other fans.  So… we’re going to give a weekly Open Thread a try.

The open thread will be stickied at the top of the media blog for easy locating.  Our only requirements are that everyone respect each other and respect Rain.  (Please don’t read this to mean that this has to be some kind of Praise Fest.  Everyone, even Ji-Hoon, ticks somebody off at one time or another.  We’re just saying play nice.)

And of course, don’t forget that our Cloud USA Forum is a most excellent place for Rain love, fan communication, and self-expression.

[ETA staff tweet] Ji-Woo meets Raizo. Fantastic. :D

•September 6, 2010 • 24 Comments

Ji-Woo meets Raizo.  Detective meets ninja.  Wow!

[ *ETA 9/7: Just something I noticed… Rain isn’t holding this sword the way an amateur usually does. Look at how his hands and thumb are positioned, and the slight 45 degree angle  of the blade, and how his grip isn’t tight, but with the fingers loose and draped… My old sensei was a master swordsman and I watched him with his kitana constantly back in the day.

It’s been two years, but in my opinion, Rain’s body truly remembers Raizo. 🙂 ]

Runaway/Domanja filming: It’s almost a wrap.

•September 6, 2010 • 1 Comment

Asian news source Sports Josun reported in their pages today that overseas filming for the upcoming KBS 2 Runaway drama is nearly completed, and that, after roughly two and a half months of being abroad with the production crew, Rain should be returning home to South Korea around the 15th of this month.

According to the article, the director and other key actors, who have multiple entry visas, have been able to return to home here and there throughout this two and a half month period, whereas Rain has had to remain on location for the duration because of his single passport.  (Apparently, only after mandatory time in the military has been served can you have unlimited travel.)

A Runaway production official is quoted as saying, “The last shoot of the drama is now getting under way in the Philippines, and both the cast and the crew will return home on the 15th and 16th, respectively. Rain’ll also return home, choosing between the two days, but as of yet no concrete schedule has been outlined.”  He also added, “I appreciate individuals fully engaging themselves in the shoot until the very end. Considering numerous factors, including the broadcast schedule, we’ve decided to cancel the drama shooting on location in Thailand.”

A Runaway press conference will be held in South Korea around the fourth week of September, after the Chuseok holidays. (Sept.21~23), and then the first episode of the drama series will air on the 29th.

[Re-edited fan made] For Rain: I’ll be there.

•September 6, 2010 • 12 Comments

— ^@@^

Rain has recently become the source of a hot issue in Korea due to his latest financial decisions (selling of his stock). On Aug 31st, Rain explained his side of the story through an interview with press company Star News, while he was filming his new drama “Runaway” in Macau.

During the interview, Rain clarified his position with J.Tune Entertainment. I believe he wants more people to understand his situation and thoughts. Therefore, I’ve edited the Q&A portion of that interview and produced a video.

You can’t run an entertainment business on only ONE star.

•September 5, 2010 • 46 Comments

[Cloud USA] Correction: You CAN run an entertainment business on one star, but IT’S NOT SMART, J.Tune.

So, we’d like to ask you something.  Why haven’t you invested in other artists, as Rain suggested?  Why did you insist on his being the company’s only breadwinner, leaving  the whole load resting completely on his shoulders?

Rain is only ONE PERSON.  Even with him working 365/24/7 (and it is an easily proven fact that he always has…), voluntarily living with no amenities during movie filming, voluntarily taking pay cuts, and voluntarily using his own money to travel and fund numerous company initiatives, somehow it is never enough.  And of course it wouldn’t be, because anyone with any business acumen at all would know that you cannot successfully grow a company, particularly an entertainment company on one artist’s back—or at least you can’t without serious repercussions.

Another thing.  Why are you not promoting Rain properly here in the United States?  We’re all sitting over here waiting for the chance to buy up Rain merchandise the second it hits our shores and yet we have to scramble around for scant opportunities to purchase anything.  We can’t even find his songs on I-Tunes!  What is that about?

And what is the Media’s problem, exactly?  What’s up with you guys?  We see that huge glass of Rain Hater-ade you’ve been drinking from for years, and frankly, we just don’t get it.  Shareholders hate to lose profits.  They fight for every penny, and these are hard times in the entertainment business.  There is always infighting between management and shareholders when it comes to payouts.  That is NOT a scandal.  It’s simply business AS USUAL.  Investing is a major risk.  No one who invests money is ever promised a dime of profit.  Ever.  Losses happen and companies fail all the time.  So, anyone who can’t stand the heat should get out of the frying pan.

Nothing Rain said in his interview with Money Today was “shady” or appeared to be “an attempt to pass blame.”  The problem is you’ve gotten so used to using your own term “Rain’s company” that you’ve completely lost sight of reality.  Rain is not J.Tune’s CEO.  He’s not even J.Tune management and never has been, another easily proven fact.  And anyone who owns stock in anything has the right to sell that stock within the rules of the game, which is something that happens every single day of the week.

Sure, Rain gets paid big bucks, but no one seems to be mentioning the fact that he SPENDS big bucks too.  He’s responsible for feeding a huge staff and their families, his own family, even his friends.  He also patrons charity after charity.  You seem to  be so hung up on what Rain’s got coming in, and yet you say nothing about how much he has going OUT.  You say nothing about the huge profits J.Tune has raked in because Rain is out there pounding the pavement every single day—alone.

This man works really hard, all the time.  He never stops, because everything hinges on him.  Yet all you can do is take pleasure in any misfortune that comes his way.  In the past, his name and reputation have been intentionally sullied by people looking for a quick buck, which any kid playing detective could have easily figured out, and yet you didn’t even care.

Every human being on this planet has made mistakes, Rain included, and everyone has the right to learn from those mistakes and correct them without being vilified.  Frankly, as hard as Rain works, we think he might be better off being a production worker or digging ditches for a living.  At least then he would be able to rest on weekends, show off his talents at local clubs, walk down the street unmolested, publicly have a girlfriend, read the daily newspapers without fear, and enjoy a somewhat normal life.

Just answer this one question:  How do any of you sleep at night?

— Stephe ^@@^ and Terri :-} @cloudusa.wordpress.com

Thank you Cuckoo, nezumi35, LifeMadeSimpleRain09, and angelordevil for all of your hard work translating this interview for Rain’s English-speaking fans.  We are forever in your debt.

[ETA English translation] RAINY DAY Season 2, episode 31.

•September 4, 2010 • 8 Comments

Asia broadcast September 4.  The continuation of ZEPP rehearsals in Japan.

We start off with perfecting the end of “Escaping The Sun” and beginning “September 11th”, and Rain’s soul voice is what you call ON POINT.  Oh, yes.  And then we move on to the beautiful “You Know,” from SangDoo! Let’s Go To School.

Watching Rain in creative mode is like watching myself in fiction writer-mode, drawing out a chapter on paper—starting a paragraph, seeing how it feels, stopping when the flow goes awry, adjusting something, and then starting again.  Feeling oh so good when what you just did works well.  Carrying on with the story and riding that awesome flow until you get to another break.  Because that’s what Rain is doing on stage as well—putting together a visual story for the fans to follow.  Very, very cool.

Ahhhh…!  And now what we’ve fondly dubbed the Silhouette Tease.  ♥ ♥  *giggle* Any comments I might make here would be hugely inappropriate for a public place, so I’ll simply let you enjoy it.

Enter the Men, and on with the music video version (as opposed to the Spanish Flamenco version) of “Sad Tango”.  (Omo, omo…! Why is it that we never get tired of these songs or the dances?  So wonderful.)  And before you know it, it’s time for the Man and the Men to “Touch Ya.”  Ji-Hoon cleverly incorporates his notes into the beginning choreography.  Heheh.  Oh! Oh! Oh!

Lastly, Rain leaves the stage as the Men begin work on “Don’t Stop”, and there ends this week’s episode.

Very enjoyable!  Have fun, fans.

At this point Japanese interpretation of these words are needed.

From the director’s chair: “So far, five and a half episodes of Runaway have been filmed ahead.”

•September 4, 2010 • 4 Comments

A quick post on the KBS TV Drama Gallery today quoted Runaway director Kwak Jung Kwan as saying that, unlike his existing dramas, of which the popular 2010 series Chuno (The Slave Hunters) is one, 도망자 (Runaway/Do-mang-ja S1. Plan B) is a drama that viewers of all ages can enjoy, and that its intricate plot line could go against everyone’s expectations [have surprising crooks and turns].  “That way, I think you will enjoy watching it.  So far, five episodes and a half of the drama have been filmed ahead.”

Director Kwak is also quoted as saying about Rain, who stars in Runaway:

“Seeing Rain meeting the parties involved to talk about his work with traveling around the world, I’m often amazed at the sight. He has been perfectly playing his character in the drama. Countries of Asia expect much from him.”

(Thanks to rain bird and Rain Europe for this information.)

This isn’t the first time Kwak and Rain have worked together on projects, dear fans.  According to the HanCinema database, producer/director Kwak also directed Rain’s 2005 drama A Love To Kill (이 죽일 놈의 사랑) and Rain’s 2003 comedy/drama SangDoo! Let’s Go To School (상두야, 학교가자! ).

Is this saying what we think it does?

•September 4, 2010 • 7 Comments

[ *ETA: Please note, this appears to be an individual Cloud member posting by the person indicated, rather than a message from The Cloud itself.]

Someone is thinking here that it sounds like the company behind a well-known Asian news source is sponsoring a new drama… a drama that will be airing at the same time as and competing with Rain’s Runaway

And so they continue making trouble for Rain in the news and rehashing old mess that should just die.  Hmm… that is an interesting thought.

If this is true… pssst, hey, Company In Question, here’s a tip for you:  You’re only making more people curious and interested in Rain with your shenanigans.  Which equates to more people watching Runaway.  So continue with your silliness if you wish—you’re only helping him.

Just cluing you in.  Heheh.

Hi, every Cloud.

Rain’s been harried by some news for barely one month as a vicious rumor about him has snowballed.

It is ‘Money Today’s Star News’ (reporters : Kim Dong-Ha & Kim Gun-Woo) which has had a leading role in spreading rumors, making up its own stories. This news has also mixed in some lines, exaggerating the story.

In fact, at nearly the same time, 3 different TV series including Runaway starring Rain are coming out at the end of September. Competition for the leading position is fierce among the broadcast networks for their own ratings, especially when they come to drama series broadcasts.

The key thing we are doing here is ‘Money Today’ company is the major sponsor for one of the others except Runaway. That’s why the company has continued to besmear Rain’s fame before starting against Runaway starring him, we think.

Although Rain has done nothing wrong, he had to speak with the news.

They visited Macau in person to interview with Rain in order to raise the controversial issue of him once again.

Although Rain is explaining himself about what happened, quite honestly, he couldn’t care less what he does because he’s not done anything wrong.

Looking at how things are going, the news is just putting on one-man show.

Really hope to put an end to this meaningless argument any more.

I know all the Clouds are always optimistic about Rain and I do believe that we Clouds understand his situation and show solidarity with him no matter what the circumstances are.

I believe that we Cloud are not such a vulnerable one who is pushing around by the cynical and hypocritical lies and complete fabrication stories.

We just put credit in his words.

Today, there aren’t any special episodes and we don’t have any schedule yet ㅠㅠ, so I’ve found my Twitter is quiet ??ㅋㅋ
(about 17 hours ago)

Well here is [a personal] episode, [after] a long time.^^

ㅋㅋ I know many of you have been waiting for a new episodeㅠㅠ, but I’ve been busy working on the next shoot even during my mini-break..ㅠㅠ  Can I tell you about Ji Hoon hyung (Rain) for the first time [today]??

ㅋㅋ ‘Ji Hoon’ hyung who recently became the man of the fanning…ㅋㅋ

I didn’t realize the picture that shows Ji Hoon hyung fanning a female staff was so popular with you.ㅠㅠ  So I think I’ll try to give a more behind-the-scenes glimpse of how he [came to fan] the staff that day.^^

Even on second thought, ugh,ㅋㅋ, the weather was so awful that day ㅠㅠ and we all were burned out from the weather.ㅠㅠ That’s why hand fans play an essential role in such a situation.

The shoot was interrupted for a moment, and a female stylist reached Ji Hoon hyung to arrange his hair.^^  And all of a sudden, Ji Hoon hyung picked up a fan next to himself and started fanning her with it.  It was kind of his fanning toward all the staffs having a hard time because of the hot weather.^^  As a result, the lucky woman staff was given the golden opportunity to be fanned by Ji Hoon hyung.ㅋㅋ

Ji Hoon hyung is such a person who sometimes willingly hands his drinking water around other staffs [who are] really feeling the heat, and he’s really very human this way.^^   At times like this, we completely forget that he is “Rain.” ㅋㅋ

Like I’ve said in the past, he is, so to speak, like a good neighbor or a good hyung to me.^^

Rain’s military date deferred to next year.

10Asia 9/3/2010 —

Korean superstar Rain will be able to pursue his singing and acting career for several more months following the deferral of his military entrance date to next year.

The Military Manpower Administration (MMA) said late on Thursday that it will push back Rain’s military entry to an unspecified date next year from the originally set September 28 of this year.

All Korean men serve two years of mandatory military service, mainly during their early to mid twenties, but Rain, 28, had initially held off serving his military duties to study for a master’s degree.

He then submitted an application this May requesting for another postponement for reasons relating to his career. Rain is one of the main stars of upcoming TV series “Domangja s1” set to premiere in late September.

Following the MMA’s decision, Rain may appear in one more drama or movie before joining the military next year, according to his agency.

An official with upcoming film “Red Scarf,” a remake of the Korean movie of the same name from 1964, had said last month that there is a high chance Rain will play the main character in the story which tells of the life and comradeship of various soldiers.

The movie would mark his second local big screen role, after critically acclaimed director Park Chan-wook’s “I’m a Cyborg, But That’s Okay” while he has also appeared in Hollywood pics “Speed Racer” and “Ninja Assassin.”

Rain, whose real name is Jung Ji-hoon, is considered one of the most successful Korean stars in the entertainment business throughout Asia.
