Revisiting: The second time I saw Rain LIVE on my television.

•November 24, 2010 • 8 Comments

The first time was the 2008 Blue Dragon Awards, with Kim HyeSoo.  (Boy, did he ever kill “Rainism” in that tux!  Yeah!  I love KBS World.)  The second time was not long after, when he opened up AND closed out the KBS Songs Festival at the end of December 2008.  It was a monster of a show, some three hours long, with umpteen special stages from umpteen Kpoppers.  Needless to say, the audience was filled with the happiest K-pop fans in Korea.

(Our Cloud USA photographer/videographer Jim was all gaga and stooopid over the Wonder Girls and Son Dambi, and I couldn’t blame him a bit because those women were really kicking it that year… but I digress.  Heheh.)

I will never forget how Rain’s sound equipment kept bouncing very nicely where it sat against the back of his… *ahem*… And how, when it was time for him to do “Magic,” I actually thought that KBS was testing the freakin’ auditorium lights in the rafters at a most inopportune time, until Jim quickly said, “Uh, no, sis.  That’s him.”  (The Man and the Men with flashlights.) I was amazed.  How creative…

And even more creative was how, when his sound equipment decided to come loose, slide down his leg, totally distract him and continuously try to trip him up during “Rainism,” he bought time until he could finally snatch it off, belt and all, and sling it across the stage.  (If you blinked, you missed it!)

And the SCARY part, when he left the stage to stand in front of shrieking fans who had lost their ever-loving minds.  Jim and I were like, “No!  NO!  Don’t step over that track, dude, or they will bum rush and kill you!  Don’t step over th—”  *Rain steps over the camera track* Jim and Stephe, in unison: “Oooooooooh $#!@!!”

Rain survived, but what a night.  ROFLMAO

Have fun with this, fans.  It’s wonderful stuff. 🙂

Rain showing Herculean strength in the Philippines

— ^@@^

For the first time in a long time, I’ve posted an episode..^^

‘Ji Hoon’ hyung (Rain) and ‘Jung Jin’ hyung (Lee Jung Jin) used their break time to start limbering up at a fitness center just next to the drama set at that time when we shot a party scene in the Philippines ㅋㅋ

As you can see in the photo, ‘Ji Hoon’ hyung pulled the exercise machine up to the very bottom part of it !!

While drinking the water, standing over him, I was amazed at his Herculean strength. .ㅋㅋ

‘Jung Jin’ hyung’s surprise was plainly written on his face. But then, ‘Jung Jin’ hyung did it the way ‘Ji Hoon’ hyung did it, too. Undoubtedly, both of them have very strong legs~^^ㅋㅋ

A person that I know of hurt his back emulating the two and became bedridden. ㅋㅋ

So everyone, please don’t try this at home.!!

Domanja check #2: Should JungJin be worried? :P

After all, he and Rain joked about being in love with each other at the Fugitive press con… Henney could be trying to pull a fast one, cutting in on JungJin’s action.  Better keep your eye on JiHoon, LJJ!  Just sayin’.  LOL! 😛

[Runaway staff post] Rain is not a world star for nothing.

•November 24, 2010 • 1 Comment

— ^@@^

11/24/2010: ‘Ji Hoon’ (Rain) is not a world star for nothing.

A large crowd of his two hundred fans from Japan, were on the set that was totally deserted late that night..

It is saying a great deal~~~

He was really able to perform to the best of his ability even in a difficult situation where he seemed to feel like throwing up, staying up nearly all night shooting the drama in the midst of this confusion.

I must avow that after all, ‘Ji Hoon’ is a world star !!

ㅎ So I think it’s an easy task for him even to participate in the closing ceremony of the Guangzhou Asian Games.

Ninja Assassin and The Warrior’s Way: Can we get our facts straight? Seriously!

•November 23, 2010 • 17 Comments

[Cloud USA] About a week ago, when someone posted a preview that said (and I paraphrase), “The Warrior’s Way just might succeed at what Ninja Assassin tried to do…”  I cringed.  Not because I’m a Cloud, but because the statement was so blatantly incorrect.

Ninja Assassin‘s director made his purpose quite clear — the movie was an homage to the ninja movies of old, those great blood-gushing, chi-using, absolutely over the top Black Belt Theater pieces that many of us loved to watch back in the 80s and 90s. Without the buckets of CGI blood, ninja blurs, and other effects, it would have missed the mark completely with us aficionados.  Even Master Sho, the legend himself, was in it!  Hello?  The movie did what it set out to do, and a hell of a lot of men and women who aren’t Rain fans enjoyed the crap out of it.  It was a respectful tribute.  Homage.  Got that?  And to my knowledge, The Warrior’s Way is NOT an homage to the 80s in any way, shape, or form, but the fable of a hunted warrior trying to make a new life on a fantasy American frontier.  Producer Michael Peyser himself described it in Variety as a combination of the Samurai movie and a Western.  There isn’t a ninja anywhere in it.

So why are you comparing apples and oranges?

But hey, I let it go.  I let it roll off my back. And then today, » I see THIS.  Which means there’s no telling where else it is.

First of all, let me say that I adore new father Jang DongGun and have for years.  I can — and will — watch his work until the cows come home.  He deserves a Hollywood film because he’s that good.  I can’t wait to see The Warrior’s Way (which is also CG’d to death, but so what?  Who cares?).  Dear lord, the plot, the character, and the trailer are to die for, and I want it to kick ass at the box office.  So my rant isn’t because I have a problem with DongGun or his film.  It has to do with the film being represented correctly.

Second of all, Rain was not cast in a supporting role in Ninja Assassin.  He was the LEAD.  The star.  And he played “Raizo” to the hilt.  In fact, the movie itself was built around himHis character’s weapon was invented for him.  The fight choreography was also built around him because as fast as 87Eleven came up with the moves, he would evolve beyond them.  Warner Bros. is one of the Big Six, a major film studio not only here, but across the planet; they saw something special in Rain and weren’t afraid to invest in a Korean singer/actor not known in the U.S. of A.  Bless them.

This pop star did 90% of his own stunts.  And the fire at the end of the movie was real.  There was no wire and no camera tricks.  He was shirtless and barefoot in the midst of flying embers and baking like a turkey, thrown through crap and leaping around as if he was on strings.  He was slinging that chain after several months as if he’d been doing it his whole life.  And he held his own against Sho-sama, who was pretty damn impressed.

Rain is the very first Korean actor with a lead role in a Hollywood movie.  DongGun is the second.  And everything I’m pulling up indicates that Ninja Assassin and The Warrior’s Way were both made for roughly the same amount of money (between $40-$50 million?).

I love the way both men are cracking the door open for other talented Koreans.  How about throwing one of them a romantic comedy, or a suspense thriller that has nothing to do with martial arts?  Asian men can be something other than warriors (Jackie Chan included), and perhaps we’re sitting on the cusp of a change in the usual wind that blows through Tinseltown.  Rain and DongGun have so much to offer American audiences, and I look for their individual Hollywood journeys to continue on for years to come.

For them to do a project together, along with some Hollywood royalty… now that would be heaven indeed.

» A terrific DongGun and Sngmoo Lee interview, about The Warrior’s Way, on The Collider is HERE.

[ETA: updated info] Important: Rain on the 2010 Golden Disk Award popular vote page.

•November 22, 2010 • 13 Comments

[*ETA 11/23: Our original source said we could vote once a day, but now, in going over to the GDA page, it says “Users can only vote ONE TIME.”  (I don’t recall seeing that before…?)  So we’ve changed the info in this post.  Thanks.]

There are a heck of a lot of awards up for vote in Asia right now, as is normal this time of year over there: the Yahoo!Asia Buzz Awards, the MAMAs, and several others.  But the Big Granddaddy of them all and the most prestigious Korean music award ceremony of the year is the DGAs — the Golden Disk Awards, also known as the “Korean Grammys.”

» Our previous post on Rain’s important DGA nominations is HERE.

The GDAs are the ones that separate the men from the boys, and the women from the girls, because they are based on the strides an artist has made in their album and digital sales and on the music charts during the year.  They are based on your WORK.  And, as we understand it, they also have an award based on popular vote where fans are allowed to participate.

» The 2010 Golden Disk Award page on MSN, in English, where you can cast a popular vote for Rain and “Love Song” one time is HEREYou don’t even have to sign up or log in!  Just check Rain’s box, and hit the Vote button. That’s it!  S-w-e-e-t.

(HUGE thanks to cloud Scorpiola for this voting page link.)

The yellow Asian Fan Voting Results button in the top right corner will give the current results of the voting.  Rain and “Love Song” are 12th out of 50 right now… not bad, but heck, we’re talking about JiHoon here and that’s not going to cut it.

I read a post recently where someone said, “Rain’s fans are no joke.”  And I appreciated that because it’s sho nuff the truth.  Santockki…! Let’s show Rain some real love and move him up in this voting.  Why?  Because he deserves it with his talented, hardworking, music-revolutionizing self.  It’s not enough to just claim devotion to Jung JiHoon — we should put our efforts where our mouths are.

We expect so much from him.  Why shouldn’t he expect the same from us?  Agreed?

This will ALWAYS be a treasure to us — this precious 2001 Music Plus footage where JiHoon was introduced to the world as 비, an extraordinary dance talent under JYP, nearly a year before he would debut with his first album and become immortalized by his extraordinary voice.  Can you even imagine a time when JiHoon wasn’t a singing icon?

And it would be years later, after his second album dropped, before he began marketing himself with the English version of his Korean stage name… Rain.

Revisiting 2008: Rain and Double Dragon… An unbeatable combination indeed.

•November 21, 2010 • 8 Comments

One thing we’ve never listened to enough, in my opinion, at least, is the English version of “Rainism.”  I heard it today offhand.  It immediately filled me with longing for those wonderful days when our Magic Feet was tearing “Rainism” up on every stage he could find.

Don’t get me wrong.  I adore the Korean version.  There’s nothing like JiHoon singing in his native tongue.  Nothing.  But his voice can also wrap around some English like hot buttered syrup on a waffle.  And we haven’t had nearly enough of that over the years. Umm.

“Now I’m about to change position… come and see my Magic Stick…” Yeah, that’s some cane all right, JiHoon.  Heheh. 😉

[ Yeah…you’re not foolin’ anybody, dear.  :-} ]

Well… to be fair about it, Roy and Elmo Chong, the ultra-talented Funk Seoul Brothas of Double Dragon, who work out of Vancouver, Seoul, and New York, wrote the English “Rainism” lyrics for Rain AND produced the English version of the song.  In our minds, DD and Rain will always be an unbeatable combination, and one that we hope repeats itself sometime in the future.

— Stephe ^@@^

The Chong brothers also wrote and produced the English version of “Love Story” during that same time, and watched that English version go to Number 1 around the world.  They spoke very highly of Rain after their studio session — about how, despite his major star status, he came in without any airs whatsoever, absorbed everything they offered, recorded tirelessly for hours until they were all done, and what a pleasure it was to work with him.  They were also kind enough to share their footage of him in their recording booth.

Roy and Elmo took excellent care of Rain.  So is it any wonder why, in addition to their amazing work with other artists, they’re our favorite producers? 🙂

[spoilers] RAINY DAY Season 2, episode 42.

•November 20, 2010 • 8 Comments

Asia broadcast, 11/20.

Right in the midst of ZEPPing… we change direction and run and run like a fugitive!  Rain was filming Runaway/Fugitive and doing the Rain Love Tour at the same time in Japan, remember?

Now, I was very happy spending quality time with ZEPP Tokyo, y’all know that, what with all the babbling and going on I’ve been doing these past weeks.  But I tell you, when MBLAQ’s “Running & Running” replaced “Hip Song” as the episode’s sub-opening theme, I jumped up and screamed.  I can’t get enough of JiWoo as it is, and here I’ve got some more of him.  And the congregation said AMEN!  Heheheh.

So, we start off behind the scenes on the Fugitive: Plan B set, as the scene shown in episodes 3 and 4 (at Kieko’s Yakuza boss daddy’s compound) is being put together.  The standoff between the Korean cops and the bad guys over JiWoo and JinYi is imminent.  This is also the scene where JiWoo’s “Lady first…!” move becomes infamous.  LOL!

You can tell that Director Kwak is in his element here, as things get underway.  So cool.

Oops!  JungJin busts his butt on the ground off camera while the standoff is still being filmed across the hedges.  ROFL!

Next stop: Saitama Super Arena, where (fictional) famous Japanese singer Kieko has a huge concert, and where the boyfriend she dearly loves — JiWoo — and her crime lord father are in her presence together for the first time.  Kieko is oblivious and doesn’t know what JiWoo does or what dear daddy does either.  But the two men recognize each other instantly and things are not good.  Ha!

But I digress… let me get back on track.

We get to see Rain and the stunt men stage the big fight where JiWoo smacks down the mafia minions during the concert.  Woahhh… ♥  JiHoon looks so good.  Awwww… he takes a moment to greet the fans who are there as extras.  ♥ ♥  (Is this going to be another three-heart episode?  We’ll see!)

Poor baby wore himself out battling all those henchmen, but got to take a breather and watch the scene playback, thank goodness.  Then it’s time for another take, and gee, his pants are fitting really nicely… *shaking my head to get back on track again*

Wha — oh, no!  Not a groin pull…!  Youch!  I got one of those in the dojo once while learning a roundhouse kick.  OMG.  I did not move for the remainder of the class.  Even my sensei (teacher) took pity on me.  But then again, with the way Rain was pounding his hip with a fist… could have been just a bad muscle spasm.  I don’t know how much editing was involved here, but if he got back up that quickly, a groin pull is highly unlikely unless you’re Superman.  Or Batman.  *wink*

Yeah, he seems to be favoring the outside of his hip and leg, and in true JiHoon fashion, works right on through the pain.  Like I said.  Superman. 🙂

And that’s a wrap, folks!  Later, Kieko’s scenes will be added through the magic of editing (including Kieko and JiWoo’s tender onstage hug) and Director Kwak will call it a day.

Awesome episode!  Please enjoy it.  What oh what will JiHoon and RAINY DAY have in store for us next week?

I love how his career footage goes from Bad to Baddest — starts with “Bad Guy” in 2002 and ends with a Biggest Badass Star in 2010.  Awesome!

Is anyone actually attending this year’s MAMAs 2010?

The Mnet Asian Music Awards began to run into trouble this year starting with their controversial move from Korea to Macau.

Korean broadcast companies such as SBS, KBS and MBC argued the move saying that artists would have to choose between the MAMAs or their Korean end of the year show because of the timing.

DSP Entertainment says that KARA’s busy schedule is keeping the group from attending both the 2010 MAMAs as well as the 2010 Melon Music Awards.

All of the other artists have also cited busy schedules as their reason for pulling out.

Here’s the full list of artists who will not be attending.

[article] Hallyu: Move over girls, the boys are back!

•November 19, 2010 • 1 Comment

The Korea Times 11/18/2010, by Han SangHee — [excerpts]

It seems like only yesterday that young, handsome and talented male singers and actors paved the path for local television programs to debut overseas. The word “hallyu” has become a household term in so many Asian countries, including Japan, China and Thailand, and the torch has been passed to yet another group of talented stars, particularly K-pop girl groups. Just when fans may have thought the pretty girls have captivated Asia, the boys, both old and new, have jumped right back into the picture, but on a more diverse scale…

…The Face Shop hired SS501 member Kim Hyun-joong, considering his high popularity in Japan, China and Taiwan, thanks to the hit drama “Boys Over Flowers,” while Nature Republic brought boy band JYJ to their commercial stands along with Rain. Tony Moly invited actor Song Joong-ki as their main man, while Saem managed to get actor and singer Lee Seung-gi…

…Rain’s new television series “The Fugitive” will hopefully reach American fans as well, as the production company said that they are discussing specific details with their American counterparts….

[scans] Rain in 10asia’s new idol “mook,” 10+idol.

•November 18, 2010 • 5 Comments

Woahhh… how beautiful, yeah?  Just lovely! ♥

It appears that the images 10asia used for Rain’s part in the book were the ones they took back during those first days of June, when they walked the streets of L.A. with him before the MTV Movie Awards ceremony at Gibson Amphitheater.  In a matter of hours, he would win the 2010 MTV Movie Award for Biggest Badass Star.
