Korean superstar Rain makes first appearance in Singapore since completing national service
Korean pop sensation Rain made a special guest appearance on Friday evening for the grand opening of the first MCM brand flagship store at Marina Bay Sands.
The 31-year-old star, who was making his first appearance in Singapore since completing his compulsory two-year national service in the South Korean army, looked sleek in black leather trench coat and pants with a skinny tie.
Rain – along with Marina Bay Sands president George Tanasijevich, MCM Singapore owner Emily Hwang and MCM chief executive Paolo Fontanelli – did a ceremonial cake- and ribbon-cutting to mark the opening of the flagship store for the South Korean luxury leather goods brand.
Curious passers-by and fans who heard the singer-actor would be appearing at the store on Friday gathered to take snapshots of him at the event. One female fan even came with a bouquet of flowers hoping to pass it to her idol, who has ventured to Hollywood to star in Speed Racer (2008) and Ninja Assassin (2009).
Among the fans was Macau tourist Kylie Chan, 31, who was here on holiday when she heard about Rain making an appearance at MBS.
Chan, who works in the casino business in Macau, said: “It’s really exciting to see him and for the brand opening. Actually I only started liking MCM when I saw Rain wearing their products two years ago.”

Korean superstar Rain’s whirlwind trip to Singapore
The last time Korean superstar Rain was in town was 2011, where he held his solo concert at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. He has since completed his mandatory military service and is set to return to the entertainment industry, having signed a new contract with Cube DC.
This evening (Oct 11), Rain met with local media and fans at the MCM Flagship Boutique opening at The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands, where the event commenced almost half an hour later than the stipulated time.
The singer-actor appeared to be in high spirits, though looking a little tired. No media interviews were conducted during the 20-minute promotion, but the charismatic Rain accommodated to photo requests.
Despite being known for his hot bod, Rain was decked protectively in a trench coat, baring none of those abs he is famous for. If there is one thing he flashed generously, it was his dimple smile, which photographers sapped up every bit of.
After the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Rain strode back down the red carpet, walking past fans who were unceremoniously shooed away earlier. He more than made it up to the fans as he responded to their calls of โoppa (Korean for โelder brotherโ, called by a female)โ. Not only did he waved to the fans, Rain even accepted a bouquet from a fan and shook a couple of hands.
We even overheard a lucky fan telling her friends disbelievingly, โHe grabbed my hand!โ
Later in the night, Rain had front row seats to the MCM Show — part of Fashion Week 2013 — where his appearance delighted and surprised many event-goers, who took every opportunity to snap a shot of the star with their phones before the real show began.
After this short meeting with local fans, the โI Doโ hitmaker will meet with his Korean fans at a fan meeting tomorrow (Oct 12) in Seoul.

The return of Rain: Why Fide Fashion Week just got much hotter
Thereโs plenty of reasons to get excited about Fide Fashion Week, and hereโs another one which weโre sure has gotten many of you scrambling for tickets. After a hiatus of almost two years (yes, itโs been that long), Korean superstar Rain will be hitting our shores for Fide Fashion Week. Itโs about time he returned as well โ the singerโs last appearance in Singapore was back in 2011 for his โThe Bestโ Asia tour.
The singer will be appearing at MCMโs fashion show on 11th October, held at Marina Bay Sands and organised by Fide Fashion week. Heโll also be gracing the grand opening of the labelโs flagship store at The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands.
Joining him as well will be Korean Superstar G-Dragon, lead singer of popular Korean boy band Big Bang. G-Dragon will be performing a private showcase on 12th Oct as part of Fide Fashion Week, at the MBS Expo and Convention Hall F. Standard tickets are priced at $120 and VIP meet-and-greet passes are available for $1,000.

Whilst we eagerly anticipate the arrival of both stars, here are some interesting facts you might not know about Rain (also known as Jung Ji-Hoon) to tide you over till his appearance this Friday.
Heโs been a man in uniform for the past two years

Just like our NS boys here in Singapore, Rain was drafted into the Korean military for 21 months of compulsory enlistment. This explains his extended hiatus from the entertainment scene since late 2011. The singer was even appointed as an honorary military ambassador, serving as a Public Relations agent in the Defence Media Agency. He looks pretty darn good in a uniform, we might add.
Heโs had a difficult past, though that hasnโt held him back

Though the talented singer may be living a life that many can only dream about, he grew up poor during his childhood years. His family struggled as his father was forced to declare bankruptcy after his business folded.
Rain recalls there being days where they could not even afford food, and being evicted by their landlord due to their dire financial situation. The familyโs situation got even worse when his mother was diagnosed with diabetes and eventually passed away in 2000. Despite these hardships, he remained undaunted, and worked long and hard to become the celebrity that he is today.

Whilst the singer is mostly known for his singing, acting and modelling, he briefly had a go in fashion design as well. The singer launched his very own clothing line, Six to Five, in December 2008. The labelโs name was described by Rain as having a desire to attain a sixth sense on top of oneโs original five senses, and featured items such as leather boots, tops and jacket during its launch. Though his line has no longer been continued, itโs pretty obvious that singer is truly a jack of all trades.

We all know the Rain has always been in high demand in Hollywood. Heโs starred in several high-profile films such as Speed Racer (2008) and Ninja Assassin (2009), both directed by well-known directing duo The Wachowskis.
What you might not know is that even Transformer star Megan Fox has openly declared her obsession with him, having previously mentioned him in several interviews back in 2009. The Hollywood actress gushed about his abs and descried him as a โKorean Justin Timberlakeโ. With the starโs talent and killer bod, weโre not surprised.

Is it just me, or does Rain look delectably and deliciously happy when he is eating? ย I cannot imagine him ever turning down an opportunity to endorse food – especially something sweet!
Back in 2007, Rain signed on to endorse FuMa Cakes in China.ย Generally, it seems that in Asia signing on for an endorsement is a big deal, like in press conference big deal.ย Unlike here in the States, I believe a lucrative endorsement in Asia is indeed a celebrated event complete with press (obviously) and perhaps even some champagne.ย Fijan Fuma Foods Group was clearly happy with Rain on board for this campaign.ย Golden boy meets golden snack cakes?ย Yep, that works!

Decked in white, ethereal and angelic, I love the way he moves throughout this CF offering sweet smiles that are both mischievous and endearing.ย He almost reminds me of Park Il Soon, his character from Iโm A Cyborg But Thatโs OK, minus the mental institution, that is.ย Il Soon was a carefree spirit with a playful and infectious way about drawing those around him into his incongruous world.ย Maybe we are seeing some residuals of Park Il Soon here in this CF.
I know Rain wants (and loves) to earn โ still there is a part of me that has to believe that when he signs on for any endorsement, he does so with his fans in mind.ย Hear me out.ย He knows we love to watch him perform and a true entertainer knows that any performance, be it grand scale or seemingly small and insignificant, is the gateway to a fanโs heart, even if it is a 30-second spot enjoying a sweet golden snack cake!ย So I ask, if Rain were to offer you a package of FuMa Cakes, would you… rather, could you say no? ๐

Not many phones rang at the recent Cloudburst Super Cell in New Orleans, but when they did, that’s what I heardโRain happily crooning across theย room.
My ringtone atย the present timeย is that wonderful old favorite, “I Do” (the Korean version, although I’ve been seriously thinking about changing it up to the Japanese version… you know, Rain in Japanese like a drug or something).

Now it’s official! According to Rain’s official Japanese Fan Club site, Rain’s official Korean Fan Club site, his official website and RAINY Entertainment’s Twitter, Rain is following up his 2010 Rain Loves Japan ZEPP Tour with a new one for 2013โStory Of Rain, from 11/14 through 11/28, in Nagoya, Fukuoka, Osaka, and Tokyo.
From the looks of it, he might have an easier time this go ’round.
For one thing, it’ll be fall instead of summer, so the weather will be milder and he won’t be frying like an egg the way he was on the streets of Kobe. ๐ ย And he won’t be trying to film The Fugitive: Plan B and an SK Telesys “Rain” phone CFย and ZEPP across Japan all at the same time.ย But knowing our world star workaholic, he’ll probably be multi-tasking anyway, what do you want to bet? And he’ll enjoy the fans this time every bit as much as he did three years ago. ๐

The Wonderful World of a Rain Endorsement

I used to think that it was kind of a sell out when celebrities both in the entertainment and sports worlds would lend their image to a specific product โ otherwise known as the โendorsement.โย ย ย It is clearly a win-win situation for both the endorser and endorseeย – I get it!ย Itโs a true moneymaker for both as well as exposure.ย But I have to tell you, when I saw the kinds of endorsements coming out of Asia, I had to pause and say to myselfโฆ.maybe this endorsement thing is not such a bad gig, especially when Rain is attached to the product.
In my ever-growing quest to know all there is about Rain I would be remiss and certainly selling myself short if I didnโt have a look at his endorsements.ย And with his recent activity for Mentholatum and upcoming appearance for MCM, I wondered to myselfโฆ..hmmmm, what else is out there?ย You have to remember, I am playing catch up here on a 10+ year career and like a child filled with wonder, seeing Rain promote the likes of soft drinks, skin care, beer or tourism is just as exciting to me as watching him grind through Hip Songโฆ..well, almost!
I would like to create then a series of posts revisiting each of them, if I can, instead of trying to fit them all into one single post.ย This way I can savor them one by one along with you.ย True, many of you are well acquainted with Rainโs many endorsements.ย So I ask, indulge this new Cloud and have a second (or third, perhaps even tenth) look at the wonderful world of a Rain endorsement.

Rain, dressed in black, groomed to the nines?ย Yes, that works.ย I have to wonder when he was first starting out and being told he did not have the right look if he even thought in his wildest dreams his face (and in this case hair) would endorse a body care product.ย ย He certainly got the last laugh, if you ask me.ย With his gorgeous skin and lush hair, Rain and body care products are a match made in heaven.
Can you imagine Head N Shoulders pulling off something like this?!ย I think CF makers coming out of Asia take extreme pride in creating sleek, well-made and visually rich productions, even when they are only a minute or two long!ย I like how this one plays into his pop star image. ย The camera just loves him at any angle and in any light.ย Iโd say CFs like this one are proof positive that he definitely needs to get back up on the screen either in film, drama or both!ย Oh, and soon!

Come mid-October, South Korean superstar Rain will be making an official appearance at Fashion Week 2013, presented by The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore. The actor-singer will be attending the grand opening of the MCM Flagship Boutique at Marina Bay Sands, as well as the MCM Show on Oct 11.
This is Rainโs first visit to Singapore, after he took a two-year hiatus from his career to serve his mandatory military service…

We are pleased to announce that community member Michele DeMarco has accepted a Staff Writer position here on our Cloud USA media blog.
She started her own Korean-interest blog several months ago, and wholeheartedly admits to being a K-Drama addict. K-Pop? Absolutely, she digs it as well. ๐
Being fairly new to the K-World, she’s having a great time seeing and hearing and absorbing new things, especially about the world star who has truly lit a fire under herโRain. Not only did she fly in to support him at his Army discharge in Seoul, she also made some Cloud noise at the Arirang World Peace Festival in Washington D.C.

Woke up at 3:30AM as I had a very early morning flight which arrived in NOLA at 10:30AM.ย Waited at the airport for Michele to arrive.ย Was really looking forward to spending time with her and meeting other Clouds.ย I last saw Michele back in May, when Rain performed at the Arirang Festival in Washington DC. That was our first time seeing Rain live. Very happy that Rain was performing in the US,ย but it was just a teaser as he sang only 2 songs and left us wanting more… Talking about a full concert or two or three, yes I would say we have Rain fever.
Both of us made a custom T-shirt to wear at the Cloudburst.ย Mine has the titles of all the songs since 2002, and Michele has a picture of a very handsome Rain.ย We decided we would add โCloud 9โ on them as we are both patiently waiting for the day to come so we can become part of the 9th Cloud Membership, or be onย โCloud 9 for Rainโ,ย so off we went to find a craft store.ย Mission accomplished.
After a few hours we drove to Geeโs house and Alicia was the first Cloud we saw outside (Alicia was also the very first Cloud I had met back in Washington DC). Before reaching the house, we opened all the car windows and blasted loudly Rainโs songs so she could hear us coming, and so did the neighborhood. Gee gave us a very warm welcome. She has a very lovely and spacious house.ย We also met Gee in Washington DC, right after she had just personally met Rain and took a picture with him and her excitement over what just happened was infectious.ย One is instantly drawn to Gee because of her high spirited personality.
Like Michele mentioned, Patsiii was missing from the group which we also met for the first time in Washington DC, and we so missed Patsiii at the Cloudburst.ย We met Geeโs friends who helped her with all the preparations of the delicious dishes for all of the Clouds to enjoy.ย Truly shows what meaningful, long lasting, true friendships Gee has. One by one we met all the other Clouds that came from all across the US and shared conversations about how we came to know of Rain, and it was awesome to finally see them in person when we might know of them only online. Gee has excellent comedic timing and we laughed so much throughout the whole evening. She also prepared gifts for all of us and I won an R2B framed poster, which I love.
Stephe and Terri arrived with a suitcase full of amazing gifts. They were mostly donated and purchased by Michele when she went to Seoul in July, and Cloud USA gifts. We watched a Rain concert from Japan, and no matter how many times one has seen the same performance, I never tire of watching it again and again. Awesome.
By the time the concert ended, it was like 3AM and I was nearing 24 hours of being awake and needed to get some sleep, and so we said our goodbyes but with great intentions of seeing each other again real soon.
Sunday September 29, 2013
After only sleeping a couple of hours, we drove to the French Quarter and the Market, stopped at the Aunt Sallyโs Creole Pralines shop, and when in Nโawlins you have to go to Cafรฉ Du Monde for their hearty French coffee with chicory and delicious beignets, then on to Jackson Square which on Sundays is surrounded by artists, musicians and mimes.ย Music can be heard everywhere, one can party all day and all night.
We did not get a chance to join some of the Clouds for lunch as it was getting to be too close to the time Michele had to go to the airport.ย On the way back to the hotel we stopped at Geeโs house again as I had left behind the R2B poster and wanted to pick it up before my travels back to NY on Monday.ย Once there we learned that Gee had not yet been to sleep as the party went on until 6AM. We stayed for a bit and watched more videos of Rain and other K-pop artists and we all agreed that Rain has had a major influence on many performers.ย Time arrived for Michele to catch her flight and although sad that our time together was over so quickly, we are both very confident that we will be attending similar Rain events or concerts in the future.
I later joined Vicky and Alicia at Terri and Stepheโs hotel room to spend more time together.
Monday, September 30, 2013
Return home flight was not until early afternoon and there was still time to do some more sightseeing.ย I love to learn the history of new places I visit and decided to take a drive out to Vacherie, LA and took a tour of the Oak Alley Plantation which still is a working sugarcane plantation.ย I learned about each family that owned the โBig Houseโย and as I walked the beautiful grounds and looked around I kept imagining how it was back in the days.
To summarize I would say that this whole Nโawlins Cloudburst weekend was a huge success.ย Cloud sisters, it was a pleasure and a whole lot of fun meeting you all and sharing our love and support for Rain.ย Canโt wait to do it again.

When Cloud USA announced that it was going to have its next meeting/fan gathering (aptly called a Cloud Burst)ย in New Orleans I thought to myself, hmmmmm,ย a group of Rain fans gathered together to celebrate Rain in a city known for its festive atmosphere pretty much every day of the year?ย That sounded like a complete win-win situation to me.ย And, it was.

When I was on the plane heading to my very first Cloud Burst since learning about Rain and becoming a full-blown fan, I wondered if he ever had the opportunity to visit The Big Easy on any one of his previous visits to the US.ย Having gone there many times myself (mostly for business purposes as my job takes me there often), I was familiar with this little cityโs big penchant forย explosive entertainment and good food โ two things I would think Rain would be genuinely interested it!!ย I thought to myself, I am sure Rain would dig this city in a big wayย and would probably tear it up!!ย With his diverse musical palate and well-publicized fondness for good food, I am thinking he should put New Orleans on his to do list.ย And I am sure our host for this most recent Burst, Gi, would be ALL too happy to personally welcome him to her city!!!
There are so many good things to talk about regarding this Burst that I almost donโt know where to start. ย But I can sum it up by saying that apart from celebrating Rain, making new friends was probably the highlight of the evening. ย I am sure I wonโt be able to remember it all so I will share some of the hijinks below!
First of all, I was SOOOO happy to have a RAINunion with my two Cloud sisters Toni and Missย โOneโ herself, Lee. ย I met Toni and Lee in Washington, DC back in May of this year when we got Rained on for a good 8 minutes by his royal Rainness himself.ย Yes, Rain crossed the ocean to be part of the Arirang World Peace Fest on May 8 which was a wonderful cultural program honoring the long partnership between the US and South Korea as well as honoring South Koreaโs incredible growth and progress in the world today. ย It also celebrated Korean culture of which Rain is most definitely a part of! ย There are many great videos of Rainโs performance in DC, but I love my grainy, iPhone captures simply because there were times he was SO close, I could have almost touched him! ย And, well, these are my very first videos of my very first time seeing Rain.ย โฅ ย So, they are a sentimental favorite! ย Although a sergeant in the ROK Army at the time of this performance (his discharge was 2 short months away), we still received some of that Rain playfulness we all love so wellโฆin addition to that smile and voice!
(We were missing Pat from Pennsylvania โ as she was unable to join us at this Burst. If she were able to join us, it would have made the DC RAINunion complete!!)
There were so many new Cloud sisters to meet and I feel as if I extended my Rain community even further! ย Clouds from Texas, Iowa, New York, Illinois, Florida, Louisiana, and Georgia ??! How fantastic it was to meet Gi, Denita, Tammy, Vicki, Cyndi, Diane, Terri and Stephe! ย I know I am missing a few names here as my memory isnโt as sharp as it used to be so I apologize to those Clouds I have unintentionally left out of this mention.
And how about this, when we arrived at Giโs home, we were greeted by this lovely banner commemorating the Burst! ย Such a nice welcome, right?
Then there was Gi herself. ย I think if you look up southern hospitality in the dictionary, you will probably find a picture of Gi. ย She opened her home to us all and welcomed us in as family. ย In addition to being the biggest Rain fan in all of the State of Louisiana, she is a true kind spirit, down to earth and ever so gregarious!
While we waited for our fearless leaders (and moderators for the evening), Stephe and Terri from Cloud USA to arrive, we introduced ourselves, listened to music (yes, Rainโs music), ate genuine New Orleans fare and simply enjoyed being in the company of each other, kindred spirits united by the love and admiration of one man โ Rain. ย Once Stephe and Terri arrived the fun really began because they came bearing giftsโฆ..bearing LOTS of gifts. ย Seriously, the Rain cup runneth over!! ย Here are some happy Clouds with their loot!!
Ok, I admit that many of the Rain prizes won that evening were compliments of my out of control shopping in Seoul this past July and that I was secretly hoping to win some of that back!!ย I actually did, now that I think of it!ย But, in all sincerity, it was SO wonderful to see the excitement over these Rain goodies. ย It made buying and transporting them all back that much more worth it! ย Gi had a mini-giveaway of her own and I managed to win a copy of Sang Doo on DVD!!!ย Score!!ย ^.^
I would say the wildest part of the evening happened when the guy below was released fromย the safe havenย of Giโs bedroom and was unleashed upon us:
Yes, that is a near life-sized cardboard cut out of Rain. ย And oh yesโฆ.there were those of us who were honestlyย contemplating an all out heist to steal it while trying to avoidย a homicide in the Big Easy that evening!ย Gi is FOR REAL yโall!ย In any event, he became the center piece to a number of pictures and, in an effort to keep this PG-13 rated, I am going to refrain from posting any of those, but will share this group shot which is so lovely:

After all of the Rain goodies were distributed and our stories shared, we moved on to the entertainment portion of the evening. ย Yes, it was well after 1:00 AM at this point but a Cloud has no concept of time, space or otherwise when Rain shows up on a huge flat screen television ready to sing and dance! ย The selection for the next two hours was The Legend of Rainism 2009 Rain Asia Tour in Japan. ย If you are a Rain fan and have not yet seen it, I HIGHLY recommend. ย If you are not a Rain fan and have not yet seen it, Iย HIGHLY recommend. ย It is awesome. ย Rain is such a consummate andย amazing performer.ย Additionally, when he is backed by a live band, it is just off the chain good! ย Here are a couple of videos taken from that show.

By 3am I figured I should call it a night. ย My travel partner, Toni, had reached the up-for-24 hours mark at this point and as much as I wanted to stay and continue bursting with the rest of the Clouds, I knewย we had to head out.
The next morning we heard that the party did not break up until after 5:00 AM!ย Being a Cloud is hard work and can be exhausting.ย But, it is without question truly rewarding!!ย Since we were not sure when and if we were going to be able toย meet up with the Clouds who were remaining in New Orleans for another day, Toni and Iย decided to tool around the French Quarter as this was her very first visit to The Big Easy.
I promptly initiated her with beignets and chicory coffeeโฆ.a New Orleans tradition, at the Cafรฉ du Monde.
We took in the sights and sounds of the French Quarter, a place that never seems to rest, even on a Sunday!ย A stroll down Bourbon Street will bombard you with live music, strippers, frozen daiquiris and more.ย New Orleans is definitely a place to experience.ย It is a small city with a big heart and an even bigger capacity to entertain no matter what your interest and/or vice!!!!

I believe a Cloud has all it takes to experience New Orleans and survive! Many of us haveย a built-in resiliency to handle long hours due in part to Rain living and breathing on the other side of the world.ย Itย renders us here in the USA to live, as it were, on two continents.ย And Rain if you are listening (and/or reading), we are so ready for you to be here in the States.ย We are ready for you to take us by storm and conquer us!ย We are waiting patiently for that day.ย In the meantime, we will continue to support you, celebrate you, your talent and your incredible ability to inspire. ย That, after all, is a Cloudโs creed.ย โฅ

This news has not yet been confirmed by RAINY Entertainment, Cube Entertainment, or Rain himself as of the time of this posting.
But it wouldn’t be very surprising at all, would it, our World Star fashion plate at Fashion Week? ๐
As most of you know, Rain is no stranger to MCM (or the Marina Bay Sands resort) and represented the brand in 2010 and 2011. He’s worn MCM goods all over Asia and Europe, and performed in them many times, his ADIEU!2010 concerts, the Pop Meets Classics concert at the Dresden Music Festival 2011, and his BEST concert tours in particular. He has made new friends through MCM, and attended MCM events and store openings the world over. Of course, our favorite was the then new MCM Sloane boutique in London, where our Katie did a great job repping for Cloud USA and actually found herself alone with the manย inside the store. (hehe)
Rain, if you are indeed going to soak up a little fall fashion in Singapore, relax, enjoy the runway shows, and have a fantastic time. You certainly deserve it.

Contemplating Rain’s early years continues to hold me in complete aweย of his many accomplishments.ย His endless capacity to muscle through the difficult times is a true testament not only to his strength and fortitude, but to his core belief that he was capable of being everything he dreamt of being and more.ย I think this is something he carries with him to this day, and has always carried with him.ย It is what fuels him.
It is no wonder then that in 2002, the same year he debuted as a solo artist, he began his endorsement onslaught in Asia.ย All I can say is this: if I were quietly sitting in my living room watching the latest K-drama and the following CF came on my television screen, I would have probably sit straight up and screamedโฆ..noogooseyo???ย The opening scene of this CF is simply breathtaking as the camera locks in close to introduce us all to this gorgeous young man with the luminous skin and beautiful lips.ย Quietly awakened by raindrops, he journeys into a refreshing Bidanbi rain shower and the restโฆwell, just watch.
The teal hue and bubbles in this CF provide a celestial backdrop framing Rain ever so nicely as he playfully dances in the Bidanbi rain.
In the two outtake clips that follow, the CF director just let Rain flow effortlessly capturing the nuances of a fresh talent on the brink of stardom. And isnโt it just marketing genius that they used Rain (Bi) for a product with a name that begins with Bi and ends with bi? Love that!ย โฅ
