Rain isn’t new to being considered influential in China. One year ago, in March 2014, he was named Most Influential International Artist at the QQ Music Awards in Shenzhen.
What else is he known for in China? His style, of course. This past December, he was awarded 2014 CHIC! Style Icon of the Year AND the Asian Couture Federation’s Style Icon for 2014. Keep racking ’em up, Hoonie. Congrats on your CMA win.

Singer, actor, and all-around superstar Rain was recognized for his star power when he won the award for “Most Influential Korean Artist” at the China Music Awards (CMA).
Rain was there in person to attend the award show on April 16, and performed two of his hit songs, “30 Sexy” and “La Song.”
He was the only Korean artist that picked up an award at the show that night.
In his acceptance speech, Rain addresses the audience in English. “First of all, thanks to my fans and thanks to China Music Awards,” he says. “It’s an honor. I’ll do my best, thank you.”
Most recently, Rain released his sixth album “Rain Effect” last year and also appeared in the drama “My Lovely Girl.” He is currently considering several different upcoming projects in Korea.

Singer-actor Rain was honored as the Most Influential Korean Artist in Asia at the 19th annual China Music Awards (CMA) on Thursday.
The show, which is China’s biggest music awards ceremony, was broadcast across China.
“I’m very thankful to CMA and all the fans who allowed me to be here today,” said Rain, the only Korean artist to be honored in the 19th CMA.
“I will always try my best to become a better artist.”
During CMA, Rain performed hit songs such as “30Sexy” and “LA SONG,” showing the charisma he has as a singer and a dancer that also won him a prize.
Rain has been gaining popularity as a singer and an actor around the world, actively performing not only in Korea but also in other countries.
The star first made his debut as a singer with his album “Fanclub” in 1998. He then started his acting career with the Korean drama series “Sang Doo! Let’s Go to School” in 2003 and has been taking part in movies and dramas in Korea and around the world since. He has appeared in Hollywood movies like “Ninja Assassin” (2009) and Chinese films such as “For Love or Money” (2014).

Wow, now this is something! If I’m translating this correctly… “Diamond Lover” screenwriter Lii Xiaojie (Lii小婕 / Li Jie) posted this picture on 4/2 and seems to be extremely pleased with the way the TV drama has shaped up. The gist of her post: “Repeatedly watched it three times, too excited to work. I forced myself to escape from my screenwriter identity and simply looked from the audience’s perspective, drew an objective conclusion… great! Turned the story in my mind into a vibrant and true picture of my little heart… Thank you, director, actors, thank you, Boss, thank you to all the staff, my dream fulfilled, Diamond Lover…”

As we understand it, before Rain and the World Water Day Event participants came up on stage that Friday (3/20), Gangnam District mayor Shin YunHee shared a story with the audience about Rain’s generosity four years ago.
The very 1st Gangnam Hanryu Festival was coming up, and although the district budget was tight and they had no money with which to pay him, she asked Rain if he would help them by please ending the festival with a free street concert, which he did, two days before reporting to the Army. (They roped off seven lanes of Yeongdong Boulevard for it and called the concert Rain: The Last of the Best. Remember? Some 20,000 people showed up.)
He graciously said yes without hesitation and not only performed for free, but forked over his own money for erecting the stage and set-up costs. Talk about doing the district a huge favor. What a guy. ^_^
In the clip, Mayor Shin shared this story publicly, and the way the audience applauded while Rain dipped his head respectfully to her from his seat warmed my heart. ❤

This is why we don’t understand when pea-brained netizens hate on him. Hate on him for what? Mayor Shin also said that when time for the 2nd Hanryu festival came around, other singers offered to have the concert — for a huge paycheck. 🙂 Don’t get me wrong. I don’t begrudge anyone the right to get paid for their talents. We’ve all got to eat. BUT. I’m just sayin’, what a guy. He’s not perfect, but him having that kind of character is why we’re in his corner in the first place.
There is plenty of Last of the Best rehearsal and concert goodies here for those of you who didn’t find Rain until his military duties or after. Just put “last of the best” in the search box near the top of our blog sidebar, and enjoy.

I found a touching story about the Gangnam free Hanryu Festival on Yeongdong Boulevard.
As you remember, Rain gave his final concert before enlisting in the military at the Gangnam Hanryu/K-Wave Festival on October 9, 2011.
The woman who is speaking on the video is the head (chief) of the Gangnam District Office. She was also chief back when Rain performed the final concert before entering his military service.
She expressed her appreciation to Rain and thanked him for helping her.

Mayor Shin: “When entertainers are performing in a general way, the tickets aren’t free, right? You have to pay money for the concerts (buy the tickets). But when I asked Rain to perform a street concert on Yeongdong Boulevard at the Gangnam Hanryu Festival for free, he answered ‘Okay’ on the spot.
I added that I couldn’t afford to stage the event (that there was no money). What can we do with this situation?
Rain said, ‘I will try to do it well.’
He performed the concert for free, even covering the cost of setting up the stage. This was our first K-Pop concert (Hanryu/K-Wave Festival).”

Mayor Shin: “After Rain’s concert, when we tried to hold our second K-Pop concert because the first one (Rain’s) had been such a hot topic [success], some singers visited us and said that they wanted to hold the concert. But they demanded a huge performance fee. I can’t tell you who the singers are [mention their names], here.”
If the Gangnam District Office head hadn’t mentioned this, we wouldn’t know this behind-the-scenes story! Whoever works with Rain, they compliment him on his behavior and personality.

World Water Day (3/22) is an annual international event that puts attention on the importance of fresh water, and speaks out on sustainable management of freshwater sources on the planet. It’s celebrated worldwide, and the 2015 event in South Korea was in the Gangnam District of Seoul.
Rain being on the scene is no surprise. He started his own water conservation awareness campaign to coincide with his BEST Rain Asia Tour during the first half of 2011, before military.

Incidentally, Rain is no stranger to the Cotai Arena. He held his Six To Five Fashion Concert there in June 2009, tweeted to all of us Clouds from there as he and Gori prepared for his BEST Rain 2011 Macao tour stop, AND that was where Mr. Rain the Jokester perpetrated his infamous “Living Doll Mail Order Caper.”

Rain’s ex-band mate Kim Hosang recently posted in English and shared an image of the two of them from one of their FanClub (팬클럽, paen-keul-leob) albums back in the day (my guess is from album #1, Motive).
This isn’t the first time he’s posted a picture of himself and Rain. As some of you may recall, he tweeted an updated one in October 2013. And, four years to the day Friday (April 3, 2011), Rain tweeted a picture of them as teenagers that he’d suddenly found again. Aw. ❤ ^@@^
