Here he sits down with Angelin Yeoh from The Star Online to discuss his upcoming trip to Malaysia, his new music, and Hollywood.

“Return of the King: Rain Comes Down Again”

K-pop star Rain is gearing up for his upcoming performance in Kuala Lumpur on March 29.

NOBODY else brought the hallyu (Korean Wave) phenomenon to Asia and beyond like South Korean sensation Jung Ji-Hoon, better known as Rain. Since his debut as a singer in 2002, Rain’s track record includes six albums, a breakout role in popular K-drama Full House and a spot in Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the World list.

The 31-year-old also has starring roles in Hollywood films like Speed Racer and Ninja Assassin. In 2011, he announced a hiatus from the entertainment scene to focus on mandatory military service in South Korea. His stint ended last year and now Rain is set for his long-awaited comeback to the entertainment scene.

What can fans expect from your upcoming show in Kuala Lumpur?

It is my first trip to Malaysia since I released the new album after the army. I’m looking forward to meeting the fans in Malaysia.

Did you incorporate the military service experience into your new music?

Yes, I did. As you know, I wrote the songs and produced the latest album by myself, and there are many lyrics that were based on my personal experience. It made it easier to express my feeling through songs.

What can you tell us about your latest album Rain Effect?

I used the title Rain Effect to explain my story. One of the songs, 30 Sexy, talks about the attractive attributes of a man in his thirties, while La Song has a different style from my previous songs. I think everyone can enjoy the album.

Do you have a song on the album that’s very personal to you?

Like the old saying, “Every child is dear to his parents”. It’s the same to me. All of my songs in the new album are equally precious to me.

There were reports of you heading to Hollywood to discuss possible movie roles. What can you tell us about that?

While filming additional scenes for The Prince (an upcoming gangster film starring Bruce Willis and John Cusack) in America, I attended an initial meeting for another Hollywood movie.

Thankfully, I’m still getting acting proposals from Hollywood.

You have paved the way for more South Korean actors to appear in Hollywood films. How do you feel about the success of actors like Lee Byung Hun (GI Joe Retaliation), Jang Dong-gun (The Warrior’s Way) and Jun Ji-hyun (Blood: The Last Vampire) in Hollywood?

It’s not because I made a foothold for them; Korean actors and actresses are really doing great in Hollywood now (based on their own merits). I still think it’s (my career in Hollywood) just the start for me and I’m trying to do my best.

What do you have to say to fans who have been waiting for your comeback?

I’m really glad to see you after such a long break. Thank you for waiting for me for a long time. I will come to visit you soon. Thank you and love you all.

An EPIC Blast from the past #226: TV’s got nothing on a good MKMF fan cam.

This fan cam by beloved SooRain proves it. Case closed!

Do enjoy this partial Return To Korea performance at the November 2008 MKMFs (now the MAMAs) from when Rain officially re-entered the limelight in his home country after completing his Ninja Assassin filming. He came on the stage “walking on water” down a high, slow-moving, 45-degree inclined slope, with a slender tether and harness the only things keeping him from plummeting all the way to the ground. (Lord!!)

“Rainism” was brand new, his hair was burgundy, and when it comes to “Only You,” this fan cam shows up close what the TV network tried to hide by only showing Rain from a distance—those Magic Hips and how well they moved during that song. LOL, sorry, Mnet, no cigar for you. 😉

(I suppose they were afraid TVs across Korea would spontaneously combust.)

I’m also including Mnet’s official video of Rain’s entire performance because as far as I’m concerned, this is his BEST “Rainism” television performance to date, and absolutely one of his and his Fabulous crew’s best multiple-song television stages ever. The whole thing, from start to finish, leaves no question as to why Rain was and still is the Magic Feet from Korea. His body is like a rubber band during every song.

And even when it seems like he’s going to run out of air, somehow, in Rain fashion, he powers through it and gets a second wind.

This performance dazzles.

It is said that Rain will be attending (and possibly performing at) this year’s QQ Awards in China on 3/27. Good gravy—at least he’ll already BE in China for his 2014 Rain Effect Show in Beijing the next night (3/28), and hopefully it’s only a short hop over to Malaysia for Twin Towers @live on the 29th. If the Maurice LaCroix press con (above) is for real, he’ll be in Switzerland on the 30th?? AND he’s filming a movie at the same time. Makes me tired just thinking about it! …and now there is a poster ad for a 2014 Rain Effect Show in Shanghai on 4/20 which, as far as I can tell, is unconfirmed. A week after Rain brought the badassery of Rainism to the Inkigayo stage, he was back again to serve up a second helping. Aggressive, fast and furious, he tore up the stage once again with this oh-so-provocative song. I believe Rainism is by far one of his strongest signature songs. I am quite positive that there is not a single Cloud who would argue that it is one of his best. Week #2 of Rainism was lacking nothing and, in fact, even felt a little more intense than the first performance.

Case in point: check out at about the 1:41 mark where there is a moment when he dances with complete reckless abandon and then seems to catch himself and reel it in! There are times when I think he actually holds back which then begs the question, what would happen if he just let it rip full throttle? Frankly, I don’t think any of us are fully prepared for that! But, I am willing to take a chance and encourage him to unleash it.^^

Week #2 had all of the elements we saw in week #1. Rainism is like a well-oiled machine – it stays on course with the occasional revs of the engine. Really though it is so powerful, any more torque and something would combust, audience included!

When the jacket gets ripped off and the tie aggressively loosened, we know it’s about to go down as in bringing out the magic stick and letting Rainism infect the lot of us!

You may recall in the first installment of Rainism he wore a white suit (which is always a good choice) – however here he opted for a deep grey pinstripe suit with a touch of deep lavender. I like this suit. But I think what really is effective is the scarf draped across his hips. This was a mainstay during the Rainism era. Rain is smart. Yes of course we are going to watch ALL of him while he is performing. But by strategically placing that scarf low across his hips we cannot help but focus there. Rain is THE hipmaster. Not too many men can move their hips the way he can. It is a subtle and sexy style choice that is well thought out and effective.

Yes, week 2 of Rainism did not disappoint. And look…I even discovered a fancam of the rehearsal for this particular performance. Bonus!^^

Inasmuch as rehearsals are a lot about blocking and making sure everyone is in their right place, I am still struck by how perfectly in unison the crew is in this rehearsal. Yes, Rain has the most amazing crew backing him up. In addition to being complete professionals, the Fab Ones are without question…fabulous. And Rain..yeah, he alright too. LOL!!

I am breathing a real sigh of relief this week. For a while there, I didn’t think the official 2013 ZEPP goods I ordered back in December were going to arrive in time to make it to this weekend’s Super Cell Cloudburst, and I was panicking like a mofo. *visions of no raffle gifts at the get-together and Clouds cornering me and Terri with flaming pitchforks*

*shudder* *Lawd NO*

Thank goodness the Rain Merchandise Gods up On High came through instead of kicking me to the curb.
