Blast from the Past #136: Heroes of The Earth

•February 22, 2012 • 5 Comments

~Written by Terri :-}, Managing Editor

Not enough is being said about the talented R&B/Hip-Hop/Classical/Pop artist Leehom Wang these days. So, I thought I’d take a moment to remind everyone that he’s still out there working hard for the world of music (and for the world, in general, actually) in a multitude of ways.

You don’t know of him, you say?  Sadly, that question will likely be asked by most of you reading this blog—even though most of us would consider ourselves to be extremely educated on the Asian music front.  For those of you who don’t know, Leehom Wang is another one of those brilliant artists who was American-born and yet who is completely underexposed and underrated here in the U.S.  Why?  Well, frankly, it’s because he is Asian-American.  After all, don’t most Asian-American artists feel compelled to live and work at least during part of, if not all of, their careers in Asia, because there’s more work for them there than here in the United States.  Let me go ahead and answer that.  Yes.  Yes, they do.

To me that is a travesty and something that needs to be remedied.  The problem is I have a terrible feeling that nothing is going to change on that front—at least not in my lifetime.  That my doubts are accurate can be evidenced by things like this past week’s ESPN Jeremy Lin blunder and Jenny Hyun’s scathingly racist Twitter rant.  Add those incidences to the following facts…

…and it is pretty clear that the trajectory is not headed up.  Sigh.  :-{

But we all do what we can do in the sphere of our own influence, right?  Hence this post.

Back in 2005, Leehom released an album entitled Heroes of the Earth (蓋世英雄). On that album was a little ditty called 完美的互動 The Perfect Interaction [Wan Mei De Hu Dong], which featured two more popular Asian artists of the time.  Their names were Ji-Hoon Jung (Rain) and Jeong-Hee Lim.

Heroes of the Earth was an important and intellectual work.  In 2004, Wang traveled across China and into the remotest of villages to collect rare, tribal sounds of aboriginal Chinese, Tibetan, and Mongolian music.  He then went back to his studio and incorporated these sounds into the R&B and hip-hop music he was working on at the time.

He ultimately coined the style of music he had created as “chinked-out” music, hoping to embrace the once derogatory term “chink” and “make it cool.” (CNN’s Talk Asia Interview).  I’m not sure if he was successful with the phrase.  Probably not.  However, his albums were another story altogether.

The first album to incorporate “chinked-out” music was Wang’s album, Shangri-La ((心中的日月), which he released in December, 2004.  Within ten days of its release, 40,000 copies of the album had been sold.  Ultimately, Shangri-La sold over 2,000,000 copies.

Heroes of the Earth, continuing the trend, was released in December, 2005.  Today, Heroes of the Earth is listed as Wang’s best selling album, with over 3,000,000 units sold.  Both albums, Shangri-La and Heroes of the Earth, were critically acclaimed, and led to Wang’s winning several awards, including the Golden Melody Awards’ coveted Best Male Mandarin Artist Award (2005 & 2006).

At the time of Heroes of the Earth’s release, Rain’s career was only three years old.  Leehom, on the other hand was already an industry professional and an international star;  Heroes of the Earth was his 11th album.  I imagine that Rain felt quite honored to be featured in a song on one of Leehom’s albums.  Another bit of trivia:  this was Rain’s first Chinese song.

Below is the music video of that song, The Perfect Interaction.  You will note that Rain doesn’t appear in the video, even though he is singing in the song.  That is because, at the time, Rain was a really busy guy, and there were scheduling conflicts with the shooting of the music video that simply could not be resolved.  It wasn’t because he didn’t want to be in it.  Just so you know.  It’s just that he couldn’t.  So, he recorded his part later.  :-}

I have tried like heck to find an English translation of this song, but one does not appear to exist.  If anyone has a good English translation of this song, please send it our way.

Wishing you many Rainy days,

Terri :-}
terri@cloudusa.org

P.S.  Another interesting tidbit related to Rain and Leehom Wang:  Remember that 2008 Olympics Closing Ceremony, where Rain made a surprise appearance to sing with a group of young artists?  Well, guess who was one of those artists?  You got it, Leehom Wang.

As an added treat, I also recommend you head over to Leehom’s official website and his latest music video.  The song is called “Open Fire.  You can watch it by clicking the following link:  Leehom Wang’s Open Fire.

In light of the unbelievable racist crap going on lately, I think you’ll find it entertaining.  I know I did.  :-}  (I wanted to say something else besides crap here, but I’m trying to keep this blog as PG-13 as I can, okay?)

Just so you’ll know, Leehom doesn’t like to simply make “pop music.”  Instead, he works hard to make music that is meaningful to him, music that he hopes will make people want to change the world around them.  Some people don’t like his music, because they think he is a little heavy-handed, a little too “on-the-nose.”  Others like the honesty of it.  I think that his living all of his young life in the U.S.A. and then moving to Asia and writing his music in Chinese is what has created some of the juxtapositions in his music myself, but that’s just me.  I find his music extremely interesting.  You, however, can decide for yourself.

By the way, the phrase “open fire” in Chinese can apparently also be translated as “full blast,” which is why the translator below translated the phrase in the song that way–because it fit better in the lyrics.  I have a feeling that Leehom may have meant the phrase to be used both ways in the song, somehow.  For example, the end of the chorus of the song could have been translated like this:

This battle is going full blast,
Full blast, full blast,
open fire…fire.

But I guess we’ll never know exactly what he meant unless he tells us, because there is no “official” English translation to be found anywhere.  In the meantime, please do enjoy the video.

Open Fire
by Leehom Wang

(Let’s overthrow) the imperialism.
(Let’s) not agree to be slaves any more.
The main gate of my house is invaded.

Lady Gaga, you say?
I say, why should I fear her?
Oh oh oh oh oh oh.
Don’t bow to those women.

Culture is a weapon
Buried in every nerve
And awakened by a performance of drums.

Never allow failure;
There’s no need to wait for success,
Because Music Man (Wang Leehom) is here.

Suddenly the whole world is shaking.
The rhythm and music invade our blood vessels.
This battle is going full blast,
Full blast, full blast,
full blast.

Blast~~~~

So many accusations
Of an Asian invasion.
Here they come a pointin’ fingers at me,
Preyin’ on a mass emotion,
Stirrin’ up a big commotion,
trying to assign responsibilities.

Gonna stop this negativity.
Turn it into positivity with integrity,
Givin’ all of me,
For all to see.
This fight for equality,
But even if they blame us,
Try to frame us, nobody can shame us.
I’mma gonna sing this next verse in Chinese

Suddenly the whole world is shaking.
The rhythm and music invade our blood vessels.
This battle is going full blast
Full blast, full blast,
Full blast.

The official Mentholatum China micro-blog on Weibo has been making it rain a lot lately. We like that. You can see those posts and my quick summary of them below. Enjoy.

(All images credited to Mentholatum, as tagged / brief English summaries by Stephe @Cloud USA)

A post from today (2/22) talks about how men wear watches not only to tell the time but also to share their personalities with the particular watch that they choose. That’s what I loosely get out of it… ^@@^

This second post from 2/22 advises that after surviving a long snowy winter, men should use the Power Up product line to restore elasticity, moisture, and vitality to their skin… ^@@^

This post (2/15) talks about how the MENtholatum Men’s professional skin care line uses the Shea fruit tree, found in Burkina Faso, Africa, for its almost “magical” properties, and that shea butter not only repairs damaged skin but resists UV rays… ^@@^

This post (2/12) talks about how, after 40, strength and muscles decrease and shrink year after year, so a regular exercise regimen is conducive to maintaining good posture and staving off diseases that commonly come with age. The post also gives advice on certain physical activities to stick to and paying attention to your age group for the most benefits… Yes, Rain in “Raizo” form was the perfect image to insert in this post, right? 🙂 ^@@^

Yang Yoseob & Yong Junhyung were almost cute from B2ST

B2ST‘s Yong Junhyung and Yang Yoseob revealed that they were almost cut from the group.

On the February 21st episode of KBS 2TV‘s ‘Win Win‘, the members admitted, “While we were preparing for our debut, Yoseob and Junhyung hyung were nearly kicked out of the group.

Before our debut, B2ST’s concept was to be fierce and masculine,” Yoseob began. “But I was thin and on the shorter side, so my image didn’t really fit in with the image the company was preparing. While I was rehearsing, I received notice that I would have to quit the group.”

Before I left, I decided to film a video of all of us just comfortably goofing around,” he continued. “Senior Rain happened to see this video and said, ‘This kid plays well. Why are you cutting him? Don’t drop him’, and recognized my potential. I earned a second chance after that, thanks to him,” reminiscing and revealing his grateful heart towards Rain.

Yong Junhyung also shared, “I knew that I would be cut a week before I heard the news, by chance I happened to see the notes of a staff member, and it was written that I would be dropped.” He went on to state that he was able to join the group later thanks to the other members.

[article] Rain on vacation.

•February 22, 2012 • 18 Comments

— ^@@^

HanCinema 2/21/2012 —

Rain on vacation

Rain has had a vacation from the Army. His first since he was conscripted, the vacation was kept away from the media until the Hallyu singer returned to the barracks. A representative from the Army told Sports Hankook that “Private Jung Ji-hoon was on vacation from Feb.9 until Feb.16, having been awarded some extra vacation time on top of his five days leave he accrued for his 100 days in the Army”.

On his first vacation, Rain spent the time at home, indulging in the food he craves as well as spending time with close friends and family members. “He did what every serviceman does on their first break, just enjoying home-cooked meals and resting,” said a representative of the entertainer.

It was assumed that Rain kept an extra low profile, never setting a foot outside his front door while on break.

Rain started his national military service on Oct. 11 last year and due to his excellent state of health and fitness was accepted in the Special Forces.

And what a doggone BLAST it is!

I mean, how often is a guy from South Korea asked to take the closing ceremony stage for an Asian Olympiad, just him and his Crew, all by their lonesome, for a medley of his songs?

Rain and the Men Behind The Man represented South Korea beautifully as the XVI Asiad (16th Asian Games) in Guangzhou, China came to an end in November 2010. He was dwarfed by that massive, magnificent stage, but his charisma and talent and the import of his name filled that place up to its brim.

The athletes were getting down to his beat. There was no mistaking that Rain belonged there.

Nice job, JiHoon.

Honoring Rain, the Evolution of K-Pop, and the Making of an International Superstar

Written by Jon Carsello

(Images and videos compiled by Stephe @CloudUSA)

Imagine a middle aged man. He is a doctor and the father of two grown sons. He is multilingual and a world traveler. He subscribes to the symphony and to the opera. He attends international film festivals and collects Japanese, African and Native American Art. He prides himself as being a man of taste and sophistication. He is admittedly a cultural snob of sorts. He does not as a habit listen to pop music because he thinks it is not serious art and believes it could not hold any real significance to his life.

On the surface this man appears to be a happy, fulfilled person. Yet he harbors  the memory of a terrible tragedy and is heart is full sadness and longing.

When he was only nineteen, he met the girl of his dreams. The first time he saw her, she was singing. He loved classical music and would sneak away from his frat house to see concerts at the music conservatory across town. He almost always attended the concerts alone.

One night he went to a vocal recital. He saw in the program the first piece was to be Kendertotenlieder by Gustav Mahler. The singer came on the stage. She was young and Asian. She was the most beautiful girl he had ever seen. When she sang, her voice had a depth and richness that was remarkable for a person so young. The power of the music and her voice made him tremble with emotion.  He saw in the program the singer’s name was Meiko.

After the concert, he was determined to speak to her. He waited for her at the stage door, but when she came out she was surrounded by people. He felt shy and couldn’t speak to her. Their eyes only met briefly.

The man was a sophomore studying pre-med at university in Baltimore. He was from a working class Italian family and he was a long way from his home in upstate New York . He was first generation American and the only person in his family to ever go to college. He knew how much his parents sacrificed to provide him with this and he took a job as an orderly at a local hospital to help out.

About a week after the concert, the man finished a shift at the hospital and decided to stop by a bookstore and cafe that was on his way home. The place had great coffee . He sat down with his books and started to study. He looked across the room and there was Meiko sitting alone, having coffee and reading a book.

When I first watched Rain’s Banjun Reverse Dramas back in early 2010—by SBS in 2005, “Romance Solver”, “Pick Pocket”, and “For Her(Sake)”—I was amazed by them. To me, you could actually see him transitioning and moving towards what would be “BokGu”, “IlSoon”, “Taejo”, and “Raizo”. He was pushing his range and throwing huge hints that yes, he could expand it beyond the sweet, cutesy romantic jerk/hero that he’d become well known for. What made me laugh hysterically was how, every time one of his characters was about to do something major, they would start playing a Rain song. It was almost like he had superhero theme music, like Richard Roundtree and Shaft. Haha!

Other K-celebs starred in Banjun dramas as well, and SBS televised them with a studio audience (thus the fan reactions every time Rain had a “drama moment”).

There are » a few more videos out there, for his stint on Banjun. Most of them have sound problems, though. The “Romance Solver” ones in particular, on Dailymotion, have the sound from “For Her”, which is a darned shame because”Solver” is so cute and the ending is wonderful. So I’m bringing you these. Please enjoy.

WARNING: There be SPOILERS right after the videos.

The reason for that is there are Japanese subs and Spanish subs, but no English subtitles. How in the world will you understand the gist of anything if I don’t at least give you a broad view of the plot? So if you don’t want to know ahead of time what’s going to happen, watch first and read afterwards! And have a pile of tissues handy! ㅜ_ㅜ (huhuhuhuuuuuuuuu!)

(brief summary by Stephe @CloudUSA)

Rain’s character “MeonWoo”, a professional thief in training, is wanted very badly by the police for crimes committed, along with his two closest friends in the entire world. The three have been together for a long, long time (though not blood-related) and have always taken care of each other. The only tiny kink in MeonWoo’s game is that he loves his “little sister” romantically and from afar, and whereas Little Sis adores her oppa MeonWoo to distraction, her heart truly lies with hyung. *sigh* When hyung makes a selfless sacrifice to save his beloved little brother MeonWoo, the act also teaches MeonWoo what sacrifice to save a loved one truly is.

As the police close in and try to shake MeonWoo’s confidence (they don’t believe hyung is really dead), MeonWoo concentrates on his duty—to be sure Little Sis is taken care of and happy. With hyung gone, the two grow closer and walk down the aisle… but when hyung comes back to them, MeonWoo knows what he must do! He insists on protecting his hyung and refuses to keep his little sis from the man she truly loves. To love them means to keep them safe and insure their happiness. And so… he does just that and makes the ultimate sacrifice a la Thelma and Louise. The gravestone at the end marks Gang MeonWoo’s final resting place. ^@@^

“For Her (Sake)”. With Han JiHye.

(Videos courtesy of itsrainismblogTV @YT)

(brief summary by Stephe @CloudUSA)

Rain’s character”Han Junho” is absolutely the best detective on the police force. Just call him super cop! And he’s closing in on a nasty crime lord that he’s been chasing for a long time. The problem is that a little street thief comes into his life at the same time, and against his will he is suddenly saddled with her. There is something about her that draws him (lord knows he doesn’t need the distraction), but he keeps hacking away at her past until he discovers a bombshell—”HyeWon” is the little sister by blood that he lost back when they were children. Street-smart HyeWon is also drawn to him and tries to respond to what she mistakes as romantic advances, and is confused when he rebuffs her (because he’s her real brother!).

During the plot climax, after Junho is drawn into a deadly trap by Mr. Crime Lord and all his team members killed, we find that HyeWon had been led astray by Mr. Crime Lord and has been working with him all along. And Mr. Crime Lord, with his wicked sense of humor, knows of their relationship and coolly orders HyeWon to pull the trigger on Junho. But her love for her “ajusshi” Junho is too strong by then, and she turns the gun on the crime lord even as she is taken out herself by S.W.A.T.  As she dies in his arms, a distraught Junho tells his little sister that he’s finally found her again. In the aftermath, he forever treasures the bear that he bought her and the tape she left him. ^@@^

Oh, it’s true.

Rain’s popular drama A Love To Kill (KBS, 2005), where he really stretched and showed off his acting chops early on, is on the Popular Favorites list over on DramaFever. Which means it’s probably getting a heck of a lot of clicks. Go, BokGu!

Ahaha! Remember this marvelous piece of funny goodness? Renowned race car driver Mark Webber (and his ninja double) and the one and only Rain threw down over concert tickets, for the F1 Rocks music channel. Mark, flat on his tush: “Not sure what happened there…” ROFL!

Rain was in fine Raizo form and promoting hard for Ninja Assassin. He had to have poured himself into those pants. 🙂
