Absolutely, it’s true! The title of Rain’s upcoming Korean TV drama 웰컴2라이프 (Welcome 2 Life) is not composed of Korean words. It is English words spelled in Hangul. So, when you say it, you’re correct in both languages, haha.

It’s a common thing in Korea, this adopting of English words, and sounding and writing them out phonetically in Korean. For instance: Our word “dress” (a garment you wear) is 드레스, romanized deu-le-seu, pronounced duh-leh-suh (there is no “R” in Hangul… instead, the letter is used for “R” and sounds like a combination of an “R”, an “L”, and a “D” all put together).  Our word “camera” is 카메라, romanized ka-me-la, pronounced kah-meh-lah (there’s that “R” problem again… as you can see, when ㄹ is romanized, an “L” is used).

Our word “banana” is 바나나 and pronounced exactly the same. Our word “bikini” is 비키니 and pronounced exactly the same. Our word “coffee” is 커피, romanized keo-pi, pronounced koh-pee (there is no “F” in Hangul… instead, the letter ㅍ is used for “F” and sounds like a “P”).

See what I mean?

You’ve probably seen examples out there and just didn’t know it.

Rain’s 2004 K-drama’s title 풀 하우스 (Full House) was adopted English words and pronounced pul-how-suh. His 2006 movie 싸이보그지만 괜찮아 (I’m a Cyborg, But That’s OK) has ONE adopted English word in its Korean title — cyborg, 싸이보그, sah-ee-bor-geh. Add in his 2012 movie 알투비: 리턴투베이스 (R2B: Return To Base) and 2018 TV drama 스케치 (Sketch) and that makes at least 4 of his career projects in Korea that fit this topic.

Until now, that is. 웰컴2라이프 (Welcome 2 Life), romanized wel-keom 2 lai-peu, makes five. So, now you know! ^_^

What is this legal drama/parallel universe/rom-com all about? Bad Rain vs. Good Rain, that’s what! ^@@^
