[series][26 images][2 videos][Eng trans] Rain Ad Campaign of the Day: DOHC Fashion, 2005.
— Cloud cover by Stephe, Managing Editor ^@@^
Let me start off by apologizing, peeps. I had planned on a completely different ad campaign when I inadvertently came upon this one, from back when Rain was starring in K-drama A Love To Kill, and… well, I kind of lost my ever loving mind over it all over again. *sigh*
Not only is this Rain DOHC campaign so visually stunning that your brain nearly explodes, it is amazing in that you can clearly see that he’s channeling a character. Not only does he look like ALTK’s “Kang Bokgu”, he acts like Bokgu in those pics as well. He has Bokgu’s mannerisms and expressions, and wonder of wonders, it worked exceptionally well with the clothing. Brilliant.
The last time I did a full post about this campaign was in early 2011. I just had to do again today. It would not be denied. So… enjoy! Consider yourselves DOHC’d ta death! ^@@^ (Making of video Re-up: AlwaysLoveRain)
I was so shocked to find the original Rain DOHC campaign site still up after 6 years that I downloaded these ads directly from the site with a quickness! A good thing, too, because now it is indeed gone. Aw. ❤ ^@@^ (Images credit: IDOHC.com)
Wanna know what the original site looked like? Well, you can. I never wanted to forget it, so I screen-capped the sucker until I was about in a coma. Wahhhh…. ❤ ^@@^
Even his old interview and the making of films were still active in 2011. I mean, what a treat! ^@@^ (Re-up: rainsherrysss)
English translation by sonya @ CloudUSA. (Sonya’s Note: This ad concept was about 4 expressions — Excuse Me, Thank You, I’m Sorry, and I Love You (실례합니다,감사합니다,미안합니다, and 사랑합니다), so Rain needed to express these 4 expressions while shooting these ads.)
Minute marker 2:02: Reporter : Among these 4 expressions (words),which expression (word) do you often (normally) use?
Rain : I love you. (saranghabnida/사랑합니다) Ohh… this is so embarrassing. (walks to the other room shyly)Minute marker 2:25: Reporter : Have your expectations for your ideal girlfriend changed?
Rain : Yes, My ideal mate must be very good in cooking, a little chubby and very gentle.Reporter : That sounds like what I’d like my ideal girl to be like too.
Rain : Is it? Yup, girls are better when they are a little chubby. To all the ladies, please don’t try to lose weight.Reporter : I agree, I like girls with small build and a little chubby. (Both of them gave a high-five to celebrate their unison in thinking)
Rain : Who who who? Who are you referring to (among the female stars)?? (gossipy Rain comes out)Reporter : *shyly avoids the question*

No apologies necessary @Libbie. We Clouds just do what we do, when it comes to information on Bi that seems suspect. Collectively we have vigorously defended him in the past, epescially when we felt like negative unwarranted rumors and bad press came his way. A Korean newspaper even retracted certain statements it made during Rain’s military service, that was based on untruths. This Cloud, along with many others of my Cloud sisters, let that newspaper have it and in so doing the reporter took notice, and re-wrote his article. That’s what Clouds do. We aren’t fair weather fans by any means, but by the same token, we don’t blindly follow him and act as if he is above reproach either. All in all, we are a pretty fair bunch when it comes to Rain. If he has ever read our comments over the years, then he knows he can count on getting the truth of how this bunch of Cloud fans feel at least (about any of his activities). We don’t hold back. SMILES.
We jumped on the “bleaching” comments with a quickness, because it sounded so Not like Rain….professionally or otherwise. I offer apologies myself, if my reaction made anyone uncomfortable.

I’ll say this….about this skin bleaching thing…..Dee is gonna need some photographic evidence. Seeing is believing, as far as I’m concerned. However, I do think people need to also take into account television makeup, camera lighting, paparazzi flashes, Instagram filters, etc. One’s appearance (skin tone) can look a thousand different ways in pics taken at the same event with all of these particular variables in mind.
Well, this is certainly unexpected that’s for sure…………………………

Exactly! All of those things factor in. Plus the fact that Rain tans really easily… ^@@^

Yep….and I’m still pissed that we haven’t seen a proper “Fugitive Plan B” tan in a looong time. I’m quite upset about that. SMILES……

Hold up you guys (what have I done, lol). There are no news stories. I’m strictly talking about what my eyes see. Especially in episode 2 of Come Back Ahjusshi in the head to toe nude scene. That’s why I was asking if you all knew anything first hand but it does not look like natural coloring to me. You know how everybody has different palms and soles colors from the rest of their skin. His, in that scene, all looked the same to me. That’s where I came up with that question.

LOL! My bad, Beez, ahaha^^ I guess I’m so used to people trying to give Rain trouble on the Internet every so often that I jumped the gun on this one! I was ready to go wherever it was on the Internet and put somebody in their place, haha 🙂
You do have a point about his appearance in Come Back, Ajusshi for sure. Personally, I think that thick TV makeup, camera lighting, camera flashes and professional filters, and the fact that Rain tans so easily are all factors in his ever-changing appearance. A particular example was when he was filming The Fugitive Plan B, which had a LOT of outdoor work. By the time they got to the scenes in the Philippines, he was so tanned, he was practically caramel. He liked it, too, and wore that deep tan for all it was worth for weeks, for interviews and press conferences and everywhere, for a long as it would last. So handsome, remember, BiAlamode? And by the time the episodes were half-over and he was making appearances in Seoul, he’d faded back to his normal tone.
It was the same with A Love To Kill. I just posted a Rain TV performance from that time and this DOHC campaign. He had quite a bit of color. (And DOHC made use of filters)
I think that the CBA production folks just used a lot of lighting and camera filters on him, and makeup. Just like magicians — smoke and mirrors. JMHO
Personally, I don’t think anyone could pressure him into any kind of bleaching, especially at this grown age, or ever. And he doesn’t seem the type to care about doing it. If there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years, it’s that no one tells Rain what to do with his body or his career. He has let folks know that he is the boss of that.
Again, sorry for jumping the gun! haha 😉

Stephe, please see what is going on with this rumor. I always thought that honey glow of his came from tanning salons and sun bathing. He seem to be running into his friend at these places, according to a couple of interviews. i assumed his lighter look was because he had stopped going(they are not healthy). I must admit when I first saw him on the press conference for Come back Mister, I was a little surprised. But I assume he was just getting in shape for the Squall tour.
My “comment”on a few comments about the new look on DF: the Korean entertainment industry is brutal, especially in the music industry . It demand much from the artists. For him to have lasted this long and to still be as popular, says a lot about his talent and perseverant and ability to adopt to changing times. There will always be RAIN.
I can see our friend at cloud america going into cardiac arrest on this one.

Now that the waters have calmed…now, can everybody tell me what they know? So that beautiful caramel (that he seemed to sport for years) was not his natural skin tone? (I miss it 😢. It entrances me.) It came from tanning? And who is this mysterious friend he was running into at tanning salons?
I had heard certain stars, including Rain, referred to by Korean media and by other stars (even in drama scripts) as “brownies”. From how he’s always appeared, until recently, I thought he was one. Weren’t you long- time fans surprised at his coloring in Come Back Ahjusshi? (And I don’t mean just his face😉. )
The very fact that he can get so deep a tan from b the sun also made me think he was just naturally a “brownie”.
LikeLike
He’s never looked pale-skinned to me, even when he was really young. As far as I’ve been able to tell over the years, his true color seems to be a deep, creamy buttercream, with the ability to get deeply tanned without burning if he wants to. I don’t know if he was in salons either here and there or a lot — I’ve seen him get tans from occasionally frequenting swimming pools and/or lying outside in the sun, and working for long hours outside.
I wasn’t surprised by how pale he (and his body) was in CBA because he’s an actor and a model and has to wear makeup and be under all kinds of lighting depending on what character he’s playing, what the producer or the sponsor is going for, all the time, day in and day out. I’ve gotten used to it.
Mysterious friend at tanning salons? LOL~ Hmm, sounds like you’ve run into some story about him and Hyori, though there’s nothing particularly mysterious about it. Rain and popular veteran singer Lee Hyori were on a talk show in 2010 and mentioned a funny story about running into each other at a tanning salon years ago. It was hilarious because they’d been coworkers, friends, and big sis/little bro for so long, and then she heard him putting on lotion and her mind went hmmm!!! as any woman’s would with sexy Rain in the vicinity, haha! keke~ So funny~ Next thing you know, people on the Internet took that ball and just ran with it as if they’d been having secret meetings and going to salons together, stuff made up out of the clear blue sky. *shaking my head* Incredible.
If this isn’t what you’re talking about, I’ve no idea.
50% to 75% of everything you’re going to read about Rain on the Internet is either wrong, made up, hearsay, or straight up bulls***, y’all. And if the Korean Media or netizens are involved, that percentage goes UP. Just a tip.

ha! I read about the “friend” by a fellow commenter right on this blog-current section. lol
As to Come Back Ahjusshi, they must’ve applied foundation even between his toes! (Hey! He was wiggling them so I noticed! ) lol But I would pay whoever had that job $1,000 to let me fill in the area between the big and second toe. $500 for the pinky. (And I am not too fond of anybody’s feet but I’d take that job. (Yessiree, I would. )

BTW, I do understand why the Internet went crazy with Bi and Hyori rumors after that story you just mentioned, ’cause the way she acts/appears/lights up/ smiles when she’s on a variety show with him or whenever she talks about him…

I’m just sayin’… not so much on his part but she was all in before she got married from the way she appeared. (Am I rumor stirring again? 😉)

I know. If you watch Kdramas you’ll see it often. And I saw an article discussing the whole “lighter is better” perception. You know, the whole “you were rich in ancient times if you were pale because no need to spend time working in the sun”. It described how Korean public views celebrities. If they were pale they were considered pretty. If brown, they could only be perceived as sexy but somehow ranking below the pale-skinned. Lighter = pretty = somehow higher status.
I became interested in it because all the celebrities that I think are the most gorgeous, male or female, are what they call “brownies”. And I find it funny that they’re among the biggest stars. As if S. Korea’s mindset tells them they believe one thing but they’re instinctively attracted more to the opposite. That’s just my on-the-other- side-of-the-world observation so I could be totally wrong. Just the way it looks to me from here.

Good observations, IMO. ^@@^

Oh I can just imagine what “brownies” means and I’d be willing to bet it’s not exactly nice either. Korean dramas still have their male leads going “ga ga” over females with “white” skin (as they gleefully describe them). I’m like…..seriously?? Their country has its own issues with “lighter/paler skin” versus “darker skin” just like we do in the West. Dare I say, some of that probably comes from the proverbial Western “ideal” of what’s considered beautiful as well. Pale skin = beautiful……..to some people. That particular mentality seems to have become entrenched in just about everybody’s culture in one form or another. Rain has always been a “honey-dipped” cutie in my eyes…….and when he does get tan…..Good Lawd! His skin tone varied in Please Come Back Mister just like all his co-stars. I liken it to how the different scenes were lit and also that lighter hair color of his may have contributed too. Other than that, I didn’t see anything particularly alarming. SMILES

No, the term is not nice at all. But this time, I can’t blame it on the west. Korea and the middle east (even in the bible), long before any contact with the west, attribute fair skin with wealth because the rich had servants so did not need to work in the fields getting brown.
In Secret Garden, Hyun Bin’s character says something condenscending (well, to be fair, he said a lot of condenscending things to Ha Ji won’s character); but he said something to the effect of her being “my little brownie” as if to show he likes her in spite of this defect.
As recently as in Descendents of the Sun, the second male lead referred to himself as brown as a way of listing his reasons why he wasn’t good enough for the second female lead.
Yet if you look at the mega stars Lee Byun Hyun, Rain, Hyori, they’re all “brownies”, if I’m to use their term.

Yes, I’ve read that parts of Asia associate “pale-skin” as a sign of wealth many times before. However, I do stand by the fact that the West’s ideal of what represents “beauty” has a way of “reinforcing” the mentality as well. It’s all relative really…..”Pale = white = rich/wealthy and most associate wealth, with the “lighter” ones of our (American) society (historically speaking).
Honestly, I laugh at this whole idea of what they consider “brown skinned”, “tan” or “dark skinned”…..it’s really funny. When you are African-American the entire discussion is like….seriously?? You all consider who dark?? Huh?? Too funny. Even the celebs you mention, not one is a dark-skinned person by any stretch of the imagination (they tan well at best….in actuality). But that’s a whole other discussion for another day. Although I do get why Korean culture labels some of its countrymen “dark”, yet I learned early on while following Rain’s career that I could not look at Korea too deeply through my “Western eyes.”

Well, I must admit, the majority of my Korean celebrity biases fall into the “dark” category. I wasn’t purposely looking for “brownies”. They’re just, by far, the most attractive, to my eyes. \_(ツ)_/¯

As long as we’re talking…:) do you guys think Rain would’ve felt pressured (maybe by her family) into this skin bleaching he’s got going on now that he’s dating an heiress?
Or maybe it’s the continued rise of his star in China? I’m wondering about that too because I’m watching Ji Chang Wook in a Chinese drama. I thought he’d had even more surgery, but now that he’s through filming, I can see it was just the super white make up he (and the rest of the cast) were wearing. He’s looking back to normal now.
Anyway, I just miss the natural tone of Rain’s skin so so so so so so much. I can’t even express how much.

I feel it’s BS too. We’ve seen this man go through his “growing pains” if you will. He’s always taken his physicality “issues” in stride, as far as I can tell. I just don’t see him becoming so insecure as to let himself get talked into skin bleaching. But that’s just me.

Very nice! A love to kill is my most favourite Rain-drama 🙂 thank you for sharing something that isn’t on the net anymore! I just think the translation is a bit misleading (at least as I can see from the Chinese subtitles). It was about various expressions he was showing for the shooting (like being sorry, being grateful etc). And the question was about what kind of expression is he most self-confident. And his answer was “I love you” 🙂 and then I think they brought up some name of a particular female star, but I cannot recognize it in Chinese 🙂

Thanks for your comments and your help, Karinina. I’m looking more into the translations and have asked a friend who is a native Korean speaker for some help. But you never know (I’m not an expert) so rechecking it is the right thing to do. Thanks again! 🙂
