Okay, y’all.

I’m sure most of you saw the write-ups and TV reports last week about Samuel Okyere “revealing that Lee Min Ho has the most popularity in Ghana” on a Korean reality show. And how Samuel O’s cousin came to Korea after seeing Rain. And that “Women in Ghana like Lee Min Ho and Rain a lot.” And that “he revealed that his cousin was met with disappointment once she actually arrived in Korea, as the male population was not what she had expected”, making everybody in the audience laugh.

Which is cool. But it’s not the whole story.

They pretty much glossed over the fact this hilarious reality TV show segment centered around Rain. (I wonder why. *evil eye*)

Thanks to native speaker Sonya, who has stepped up to the plate a lot this year in bringing us translated Korean news items when she could, we can set the record straight. Sonya, you’re a gem!^^ ❤

Samuel Okyere is a young black man from Ghana, West Africa, who has become a favorite TV personality in South Korea these past few years. He speaks Korean and has been on many reality shows. He’s a current cast member of KBS’s Our Neighborhood Variety Sports (a.k.a. New Kiz on the Block). Recently, his cousin Effie, also from Ghana, was brought on the show to talk about Korea. That’s when the hilarity went down, keke~

I really like Effie! I’d hang out with her in a heartbeat.

Read on, and please enjoy. 🙂

Kang Ho-dong, host MC: Why did you want to see [meet] me?

Effie, Samuel’s cousin (in Korean!): I was very interested in Korea, so I watched X-Man [X-맨, popular TV show with Kang Ho Dong as MC] before coming to Korea.

Kang Ho-dong: You had a lot of interest in Korean culture. You have been living in Korea now, how is it [here]?

Effie: Before coming to South Korea I thought all South Korean men would look like Rain.

Samuel O: She [Effie] is still telling me that she was very disappointed about that.

More cast members arrive.

Cast member (to Effie): What do you think, who is the most like Rain among these people [here]?”

After the question, another cast member imitates Rain’s “It’s Raining” breathing and chest pumps to hopefully get her approval.

Hyungdon (green shirt, of Hyungdon & Daejune) arrives. Effie recognizes him and starts to sing his “Gloomy Song.” The look on his face is priceless.

  1. I understand, when I saw Rain, I started looking at Korean men walking down the street and thought, “Oh no, he’s nothing like Rain, where are they. I was disappointed too expecting more men to look like Rain. But I’m glad there aren’t too many Rain lookalikes because I would have to sleep with or fanticize sleeping with all of them, that’s too many men. Haha, just joking. I feel her pain.

  4. I loved this post. I know all South Korean men don’t look like Rain but what a tourist attraction it would be if they did.

  6. Wow…….how awesome is THIS post! No, I hadn’t seen this at all. Now THESE are the type of things I’d like to see circulating on FB. Who knew Korean TV had some “chocolate sprinkles” on a weekly TV reality show? I’m kinda floored…..but in a good way. Talk about “news you need to know.” SMILES…………….

Oh and I feel sista girl when she wonders where the “pretty men” are. They are on the TV screen and on CD and magazine covers girlie. You just got “smacked” in the face with the “everyday average Barney Fife” types……SMILES. Hence, her disappointment. Honey, you just don’t see the “Jihoon Jung aka Rain” types walking around e’eryday.
