  1. Long, long ago (we’re talking 1000s and 1000s of years), someone started and people continued to perpetuate the hot mess that has resulted in the idea, among multiple cultures today, that white signifies good and black signifies bad. It has even come through in our languages — being blackballed, being whitewashed, doves meaning purity, crows meaning death, etc., etc., etc.

This has been used so negatively and hurtfully throughout history, and even today, that I feel sometimes we forget that someone praising something for its whiteness or paleness doesn’t automatically mean that they are downing blackness or darkness at the same time. It is possible to simply admire something for what it is at the time. Some people ARE nasty that way. Some people are not.

Rain has a pair of the most beautiful hands I have ever seen on a man (any man) in my entire life. They are unique, very recognizable, tapering, and just gorgeous. And I love their color. Their porcelain hue is stunning and I hope they never lose that. I also love his butter cream skin. Oooh, that face! Does that mean I’m saying at the same time that I don’t like dark hands, or that darker-skinned men are ugly? Eh, no.

Tyrese has the most beautiful cocoa skin I have ev-vah seen in my life. OMG. It is simply butter sauteed in a pan over high heat for a LONG time and I love it. It’s like Southern pan-fried gravy. Does that mean that I’m suggesting in the same breath that I hate white skin, or that white men are ugly? No.

When Rain got his tan doing The Fugitive in Manila, I about had a heart attack. Holy smokes, but seeing that man caramel does some crazy things to your toes, let me tell you. I love to see Rain tanned. Is there hidden somewhere in there a negative comment about Asians who aren’t tanned? No.

In my experience, there are many Caucasians and Asians who think that darker skin is gorgeous. There are so many people the world over who acknowledge today how lovely all shades of skin are. So I try not to be too quick to jump when I see stuff typed out of context on the Internet and I don’t know that person from Adam. I don’t know where their head is. Someone praising any color skin for being beautiful doesn’t bother me because sometimes that’s just all they’re saying. Why shouldn’t every color on the human rainbow be praised, from one end to the other? ESPECIALLY Rain’s, by golly.

“His white, beautiful hands put the Korean fan in shame of her own hands.” What of it? They probably did. LOL! Frankly, they’re insulting the Korean fan, bless her heart, LOL. (Example) “His white, beautiful hands would be so ugly if they had nasty dark skin.” Big difference. Now them’s fightin’ words.

This isn’t a criticism of anyone or response to anything in particular that has been said, just my heartfelt thoughts on a touchy subject.

    • Touchy subject indeed. I concur with your statement as well. Although (personally) a butter cream, caramel Bi makes me want SEVERAL scoops of some Blue Bell Butter Pecan ice cream. During his Fugitive Plan B days my “sweet tooth” went into overdrive. Crazy things happened to more than just toes………..I gotta say. LOL!!

  3. You know………here I go again with a controversial comment, but y’all know me by now. So here it is………………………………..

I gotta say I cringe a little every time I read a comment/account about the “porcelain” color of his skin….be it his hands, arms, legs, face, etc. I KNOW it’s a culture thing and I KNOW the reasons why, but honestly it hits a small nerve (me being “chocolate” and all) that still says being “snow tinged” is first and foremost the ideal beauty type. I KNOW it’s not what everyone believes and I KNOW the fan account was not meant to offend. It’s merely and observation on my part and one that (like I said) makes me cringe a little. I’ve also noticed the reference to “white” skin said by some Korean celebs on the various variety shows posted on YT and when I hear it, I’m like……”Really?” There really is a certain feeling of “back in the 50s” kind of vibe with regard to the thought in itself. Heck, I just saw one of those crazy spending-overnight-with-various-celebs type variety shows and Lee Seung Gi was one of them. One episode had him and his celeb pal putting some type of face cream on and they were like…..”Oooo, makes your skin soft and keeps it white.” I was like you too Seung Gi? (SMILES) I have never commented on it in the past, but I couldn’t hold back any longer.

To me shades in the realm of “honey, caramel, olive, golden brown and sun-kissed” all do the trick too. (SMILES)

Oh and BTW, I am willing to admit that Because Of my own color my sensitivity may be a little biased and on alert as well. This falls into the “it is what it is” category. Anyway……………Just my thoughts for now.

    • Hahahaha oh my sister I’m right there with you but because of past incidents aherm! I keep a lot to myself. But this as always bothered me even in my own life. I wish people of color would stop trying to be WHITE! Because of my skin color (in our community) I’d be called yellow or when I was younger lite bright and damn near white! Lol and my hair texture Omg! That’s a whole other beast in itself. My point is we should all be proud of who we are and what we look like. BiA you’d think in this day and time we of color would be proud of what we have because now days white people are killing themselves to look like us color, butt, etc. I better stop here cause I really don’t need anyone debating something in my culture what I know to be true regardless to what a white wrote in a dictionary. BiA I’m sure you can understand me on this. And just one more thing anyone that’s new to the form I’m biracial so don’t come at me saying I’m prejudice! Cause I’m the farthest from it. It’s just I’ve been through and seen a lot.

      • I hear you Lotus and I understand. No, I’m not trying to spark a long debate either nor will I. I’ve come to the conclusion that all cultures have hang-ups on skin tone in one form or another and as always it’s unfortunate. Maybe someday people will come to realize that the “darkest berries” make the sweetest juice……..*just saying*…..SMILES.

    • Okay, hey, now. What’s wrong with porcelain skin? Huh, huh? LOL. I’m just kidding.

I do understand the mentality, though. People all over the world equate being “whiter” with having more privilege. That’s terribly sad to say, but being white, I do get it. The funny thing is this skin color preference exists for white people too.

If you are a white person, being “too white” is viewed as bad and having darker skin (or a tan) is good. If you have a nice, even tan all year round, that means you are not a “hard-working” (blue-collar) white person, which means you are actually more privileged, because you “obviously” have more leisure time.

Having sun-kissed skin means that you have time to be outside playing sports, as opposed to spending all of your daylight hours working in a cubicle in a windowless room. Or it means that you have time to go to a tanning salon and tan regularly, or time to sit by the pool and tan naturally while you are talking to your other rich friends–who all probably have very nice tans too. LOL. So, yeah. White people think totally differently about their own white skin. And yeah, that’s really ridiculous too, right?

I agree with you BiA. There are so many lovely skin colors, and most are far more lovely than white skin. At least, IMHO, there are. I mean, I’m sitting here looking down at my very pale arm (which is actually sort of a freckly light beige and not white, btw). I’m looking at the blue veins on the underside of it. I can see bumps and scars (from my childhood) and the freckles that are really blatantly obvious, and I’m thinking…EW, I need a tan. But why do I feel that way, really? What IS that? I guess that’s what you’re talking about, huh, BiA?

Of course, if I did try to tan, I would simply come out with a sunburn and more freckles. So, I guess I’m stuck with this freckly-beige stuff forever. LOL.

      • LOL!…..okay, okay “porcelain” skin is “aiiight” too. *SMILES*…………….

I just feel like I think people should stop equating the best of the best with white skin only. Beauty and privilege and lots of other great “ish” comes to people of all shades. I just think the time for even thinking that way is truly old-fashioned……just old and out of place in 2013.

Hey, don’t “pick on” yourself Terri. No matter what color we are it’s just too easy to do that. My point is really that beauty comes in All shades not just one particular one and I wish people would acknowledge it in general.

        *SMILES*……………………………………………..

  4. Thank you for sharing this fan account, I truly love to read them and I particularly liked how these fans although wanting to be close to him they respected his space and left him alone to enjoy his time with his friends.
I recently saw a video of an interview due to a commercial he did in 2011 where he was asked to share a secret. He said he wasn’t sure if it was a secret to all but some may think he is very reserved but instead he has a “fun personality”. I am sure all of us devoted fans have seen that he must be a lot of fun to be around.
It is amazing to watch the transformation of Rain the performer and Jung Ji Hoon. When searching for videos I do love to find the behind the scenes videos as you get to see a bit of all that and there is so much out there on the web. He is living the dream and has really worked hard for it.
I have only been a fan while he has been in the service and I am looking forward to being able to follow his career as he returns to Act 3 of his life (I read this from a Rain interview that he considers after military service Act 3 of his life or at least this is how it was translated) I am happy to know of Rain and to see where Act 3 takes him.
I will make a point of having another opportunity to see him in concert again whenever and wherever it will be.
