(Review) Soar Into The Sun
The last film made by Rain before starting his military service, Soar into the Sun was shot with the co-operation of the Korean Air Force. He plays ace pilot Jung Tae-hoon, a cocky troublemaker who is demoted to a small squadron led by Capt. Park (Kim Sung-su) and includes his old friend Yoo-jin (Lee Ha-na) and rookie Seok-hyun.
Jung treats his new position lightly, and even finds time to romance Sgt. Yoo (Shin Se-kyung), the pretty but by-the-book mechanic looking after his plane. At the same time, he has to deal with Major Lee (Yu Jun-sang), the air force’s top gun whose skills surpass his own.
Suddenly, there is a threat from North Korea, when a traitorous element launches a coup d’etat, and also plans a nuclear attack on South Korea. Now it is up to Jung and the rest of his squadron to save the day.
The film has a relatively simple plot, but the heartfelt performances by the cast, more than make up for it. We get to see how the pilots live off the base, and get insights into their characters, leading us to really care for them.
But the real stars of the film are the fighter jets. Aviation enthusiasts will have plenty to feast their eyes on here, as there are many thrilling maneuvers and dogfights involving the F-15K, FA-50 and MiG-29.
The CGI stunts are amazing, and the scene where the pilots chase a rogue North Korean pilot through a civilian city is both nail-biting and heart-breaking.
The film does drag in the middle, with a few too many pointless establishing scenes, but the final battle scenario more than makes up for it.
In all, this is a pretty top-notch film that will probably make you want to break out the Lock On flight simulator game and soar into the sun yourself.
