If you’re still waiting for your RAIN The Best Show Ltd. Premium DVD package to arrive from RAINY, it should be coming, so just hang in there. RAINY finished shipping everything on November 1; I’ve tracked our package and it’s been sitting at JFK Airport in New York for the past 10 days. Which means yours might be there too. (I guess folks here don’t think people want their stuff. *heavy sarcasm*) *{Edited to add: You know, it just occurred to me that Superstorm Sandy did ravage that area. So I shouldn’t have been sarcastic, and I apologize. Sincerely. It was mean.} The good news is that it’s on US soil and will arrive at some point.
Yes, CJE’s sales team in Korea has put R2B on YesAsia for that area (Region 3), but we will not be promoting that version, not when versions targeted specifically for North America (Region 1) are coming from CJE in the USA. Rain’s DVD sales here are just as important as they are over there, if not more so. It is imperative that he benefits from us putting our money and our time into his U.S. numbers so that his projects continue to be distributed here, the way we’ve been asking for years. As soon as we get the info coming to us on the North American DVD release, rest assured we will relay it to you. If you cannot wait (?) or don’t mind having your R2B money count in Asia, just make sure you have the proper equipment to play a Region 3 DVD and do your thang.

R2B: Return to Base has touched down on tarmacs in South Korea, the U.S. and Canada, and is on its way around the world. It has premiered in Vietnam, Thailand, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Malaysia is set for November. Japan is set for December. The latest news is that Taiwan is set for November 23 AND that it will also be showing at the London Korean Film Festival 2012 on November 5 and November 16, in the United Kingdom! Let’s see where else this bird is going to land!

The truth is and always will be that everybody uses everybody. Every Color on this planet uses other Colors for stuff, borrows and adopts other Colors’ things, pokes fun at other Colors for a laugh or for ratings, appeals to other Colors so they’ll like them, etc. Frankly, there isn’t any culture who HASN’T borrowed from somebody.
I’ve always seen cultural sharing and borrowing as an awesome thing. What better proof that someone appreciates your style, fashion, music, tradition, etc. and what better way for other cultures to see that too? It’s the sincerest form of flattery. (I LOVE the fact that Rain and the boys cornrowed their hair for one of the BIGGEST moments in his life. That’s what drew my eye to him the very first time. He showed my culture love, which made me notice and appreciate the rest of his sexy, talented self, and years later, here is Cloud USA, haha.)
Things go awry because we human beings are stupid like that. But we can also be just as good at cleaning the mess up. We went from red- , yellow-, and blackface to slurring white people on TV every night and thinking that was funny (TV in the 70s, 80s, early 90s) and finally dumped all of that crap. There’s no reason for me to not have hope and expectations that the blackface in Korean entertainment will also go the way of the dodo bird (i.e. extinct), and to watch for that.
In the meantime, if the last time blackface showed up was sometime last year and it isn’t being televised hour on the hour over there right now, I’m not of a mind that it’s time for me to start a bonfire, gather up arms and go to war. I think we need to feel free to enjoy the wonderful things that we do about Korea, continue to immerse ourselves and have fun, and just be alert and aware of what’s making the scene, so that if stuff is still happening, it gets directly addressed without the Korean artists who don’t like it getting grouped in by association.
I just saw MCHammer and PSY close out the American Music Awards like gangbusters (Hammer was a complete surprise). It was indescribable, and said LOADS about just where blacks and Koreans are together, on the real tip.
This was a good topic of discussion with some great comments. Let it end for now.

So just watched the AMA’s and wasn’t really expecting Psy to perform with MC Hammer. I really enjoyed the performance and it made having to sit through the whole thing worth it. 🙂

Well Lotus, here’s what I think. On some level we all get “used” to a certain degree. After all, it is a business and they are in the business to make money. Do I think some shrewd businessman saw that he was sitting on a potential gold mine and thought it would be a “groovy” idea to crank out cookie cutter groups that sing and dance like many young Afr-A artists in the States? In a word….Yes. The only difference is we’ll put them in skinny jeans, give the asymmetrical haircuts, platinum blonde dye jobs and market them to Asian audiences only. Who would be the wiser?
I think nothing is new under the sun and these Korean management companies got this idea from watching how things are done right here in the good ole USA. The Black community has long been the SOURCE of “inspiration” for MANY an artist (ex: Elvis Presley, Mick Jagger, Rod Stewart…to name a few). We have inspired everything from music, to clothing, to hairstyles to SWAG in general for many a decade (if people are honest). Some would even say we have been Swagger Jacked and get swagger jacked…..Often. I think when these young artists sign up for K-Pop music camp, they are given videos and DVDs of old TV programs/performances of seasoned Black artists and told to “study” them like they are in a university. Then they are made to practice their butts off until they perform effortlessly. Then the K-Pop machine takes over and the rest is what it is. However, these kids are not given history lessons in Black culture, they are only shown the cool parts, how to be hip and fly. So missteps like performing in black face are bound to happen. This happens from sheer ignorance. From not knowing the culture they admire and emulate in its Totality only in part. Sure you know my people are known for being some of the best dancers and singers in the world, but what else you got? what else can you tell me? Anything?
Here is my HOPE. I Hope that these young people develop or have come to develop (on their road to fame and fortune) a TRUE appreciation and Respect for the ORIGINS of the music they perform and the culture in general. As a Black person who has come to know K-Pop and some of it’s artists, this is all I can ask and I don’t feel it is asking too much either. Respect is a two-way street. I also hope some time in the not too distant future a K-Pop artist will actually go on the record in an interview about this subject of black face, then hopefully true cultural dialogue/exchange can take place.

On a lighter note, as I was reading the comments from earlier I decided to scroll up and look at the pic above. Hubby, is sitting next to me and when I scrolled up I stopped at the abs/belly button. *Kekekekekeke* I then showed the abs/belly button to him and he said…..and I quote…..”Is that me?” LOL! I said “when did you take an abs/belly button pic?” Ignoring me, he said “Hey, I look pretty damn good.” I said, “Now you know that ain’t you” then I scroll up to show him Bi’s face to which he responds…”Oh, I thought it was me.” *Kekekekekekeke*

Wow, it totally makes no sense to me how any of those Kpop “idols” believe by doing “black” face they are somehow “paying tribute” to the Black artists they admire? How can that be when I would hope somebody would tell them it’s NOT a good idea. Or maybe they just don’t care? Why wouldn’t they think/know that music is universal and somebody, somewhere WILL SEE IT! and question they’re motives? Right?

Mother of God to say I’m stunned is the understatement of the year!! I had NO IDEA this kind of thing was going on with such prominent groups of Kpop music! I just can’t believe it but the evidence is here in front of my face! I’m really upset and it would kill me if this is a common thing in kpop groups. I don’t understand their way of thinking, I mean, they suffer discrimination too!! Why they would do something like this? To me it doesn’t make any sense at all!! I’m really surprised and hurt. I can’t begin to imagine how you must feel looking at these videos. I don’t know what to think right now about these groups. 😦

The fact that some of them may be being MADE to do it has crossed my mind too. I mean why not? They’re pretty much made to do everything else, by their management and by the powers behind the idol shows, and losing their job (and getting sued for breach of contract) isn’t really an option.

Yes, it could very well be a strong possibility. They do sign these long laborious contracts, so management “owns” them in certain respects. They must work And live together.
Even so, I just wanted my Cloud sisters who love K-Pop to be aware of the ugly side as well. I even struggled with bringing this up here at Cloud USA, because I didn’t want to turn anyone off from Bi. However, the best decisions (IMHO) are informed ones. I don’t say turn away from K-Pop but just know what’s going on or what has gone on also.
I do think once you know better you do better. I also think that when these celebs travel more extensively outside of Korea, they will get to see with their own eyes that no culture is just One thing. Are there Black people who behave and act like the portrayals in rap videos?….yes, of course there are. However, there are many more of us who look and behave/carry ourselves like the President and First Lady Obama. Many of us are straight laced professionals, some of us are artists and poets, playwrights and doctors, some of us own businesses. The management companies of K-Pop artists will really have to go deep as well and look at how they are exposing their young stars to the world. They will have to own up to Their Own ignorance as leaders/managers of these groups, if they are indeed forcing them to partake in this foolishness. You don’t take the most hurtful things of a people’s history and make it fodder for TV variety shows.
With Psy and “Gangnam Style” style EVERYWHERE now, the world is truly at the doorstep of Korea now. Just like I found this information, believe me some crafty reporter in the U.S. is already working on a documentary piece (I’m sure) about Korea’s K-Pop “machines.” There is no hiding…..information is everywhere these days.

Oh well, after knowing about the JYJ situation and other situations with other groups as well, I’m ready to believe anything about Kpop groups managments!! Is unbelievable the things these kids go thru to first, enter in those groups and later, deal with all the stuff that comes with fame!! I mean they’re practically slaves during training and after, it doesn’t get much better! These kids really go thru hell and back to get were they’re today. Their companies make them do whatever it takes to keep a perfect body, a perfect image and perfect performance during the time they’re under contract. These kids are their puppets and their companies make them do all kinds of things to gain people’s attention. Yes, probably they’re made to do this things. I can’t believe these kids, with all their traveling, aren’t aware that they’re hurting Black people’s feelings by doing these performances. I think that maybe it has to do with the way koreans view people from other countries, maybe they’re trying to fullfill an image that korean people have about Black people just for fun, to make them laugh but obviously the managment or whomever make them do these performances are not aware that they’re hurting Black people’s feelings in the process. We’ll have to ask to Black people living in Korea, maybe they can offer their thoughts about this. Do they feel
offended as a race living in Korea? Oh man, I don’t even want to know what they think about Latin people! We can be loud, fiesty, overly happy but as Bialamode said, not all of us are that way! I want to believe that discrimination in Korea isn’t something people from other countries have to be worried about. 😦

You make a lot of sense here. This was good subject matter. Being informed is half the battle.
There is also always the other side of the story (the idols’ side, which we haven’t heard), and I’m of a mind that there is the possibility of change for the good. I’ll be watching for that. God knows there isn’t a race alive that hasn’t done stereotypical stuff and laughed about it, but then the trick was moving forward and changing things for the better. That has happened.

This was the next thing I wanted to say as well. I would Love to actually hear from the artists who have either witnessed or participated in these acts and what their feelings are about it. Did they feel bad? Did they feel it was wrong? Is there remorse? Did they realize they were doing something hurtful/disrespectful?
I would be interested in these type of responses. Maybe as time goes on, some K-Pop celeb may be brave enough to speak publicly about it. Because, I can almost guarantee that this WILL come up again as they become more and more famous in Western markets. This is one of those interview questions they’ll get “blindsided” by and will have to answer it earnestly/sincerely….no BS answer either. Yes, this would be my wish in the not too distant future.

No Terri, they aren’t really recent but they did happen in recent years. It was a topic I brought up for discussion here because I felt like a lot of Clouds love and support K-Pop but may or may not have been aware that incidents like these have happened among K-Pop celebs.
I had also mentioned that I have only recently begun to pay attention to the music of some of my favorite actors who just so happen to be K-Pop celebs. I thought it important that if people support the K-Pop “movement” then they might want to know fully what they are supporting…..the good, bad and ugly of it all. For the record, I have never said/suggested that anyone stop supporting K-Pop…..just want to put that out there. I just thought it was a topic worth mentioning as many who love K-Pop are Afr-A and the issue of “black face” is still viewed as hurtful and disrespectful.
During our discussion, it was mentioned that maybe some of these young stars may also have been “forced” to partake in these racially insensitive acts as well. I just wanted to know how Clouds felt about the issue in general.

There was some just last year, enough to where Yoon MiRae was embarrassed and a bit pissed. She didn’t feel it was being done intentionally to hurt, but had been speaking out and trying to school people that yes, you are harming… to no avail.
I really need to get my Korean channels back so that I can get back into my programming and check out the landscape…

My mother told me just today that she heard something about Teddy Riley being over in Korea now “drumming up” some business. The following is from (Wikipedia):

You know with all the politicking going on and race coming to fore as the subject of the day yet again. It’s been a while since we tackled a tough subject on the blog.
I came across this article today. Even though I have seen all of these and been aware that these instances have happened among K-Pop celebs and even discussed it elsewhere. I wondered what the general consensus was among Clouds at Cloud USA. Especially since efforts are being made on behalf of these groups to come to branch out into western markets.

I’m not down with it. I take great offense to blackface, and it boggles my mind that Korea would be so stupid now that Rain has brought the world practically to their front door, with his junior entertainment colleagues inviting everyone inside.
I could have understood, at a point early on, that they might not have realized just how DEEPLY blackface stings, that it wasn’t just a comedic prop but representative of perceived Black inferiority and lack of intelligence. But now in this day and age, there’s no excuse for not knowing how deep you are cutting. There are plenty of English-speaking Koreans in entertainment who have connections over here and absolutely know what the deal is. Not even AMERICANS do blackface on TV — what kind of big ass clue is THAT for you?
No one anywhere should be doing any kind of -face, period. The days of relegating people different from us to subhuman or nonhuman status should be FAR behind us.
I don’t get to watch a lot of Korean programming anymore — I’m too busy. So when I saw BOOM and SuJu do their bit, that was my first experience and I was shocked by their ignorance. I don’t recall BF in any of the programming I used to watch everyday. I didn’t realize how much it was being done these days. Big Bang, SNSD, and others… I just didn’t realize.
My opinion is the crap needs to stop. With people across the world now watching your programming daily, and you yourself marketing that programming TO US, how could you be so daft? Educate your idols and educate yourself. Blackface is not cute. For an Asian culture who has been treated brutally by other Asian cultures only because of their race, I would think they’d get that.
To my knowledge, Rain hasn’t ever done it. He has thrown on the Afro wig and Starter jacket and gold chains to give 90s Hip Hop many a nod, but did anybody see him throwing some Black on his face too, as if that was the only way to get his point across or something? Er, no. He was smarter than that, and probably bothered by the thought of it, you know, facing his friends who are black after doing something so insensitive. That is one of the reasons I’m as big of a fan as I am — Rain is made of the right stuff. I don’t believe he’d ever pull some mess like this. (And if he did, he and I would have a huge problem. Trust.)
Well, that’s my buck fifty. If you’re going to invite a global audience, be smart enough to adopt a global state of mind or don’t even bother. I love some K-Pop, but I will cut it off at the knees and part ways with it when it comes to my principles. Just like that.

This is how I’m feeling as well. I like some K-Pop too (not all), but I think I’ve held myself back from fully embracing it because of some of these “zingers” I have picked up on along my journey through Korean culture. Part of me feels like exactly what you said. How can you degrade the very culture your music was born from? Just for kicks.
Yeah, I no longer buy the “I’m surrounded only by people who look like me” excuse anymore either or the “they just aren’t exposed to Black people”….I call bulls***t. They’ve got TV and the internet. Black culture is more than just some hip hop videos with dancing strippers dropping it like it’s hot. Just like I go in search of “more” when it comes to Asian culture (i.e, articles, books, documentaries) I would challenge K-Pop celebs and Asian entertainers in general to do the same when it comes to my culture. Yes, their entertainment establishments really need to “school” these celebrities otherwise, they will get schooled in other ways and it won’t be pretty.
I don’t “study long” either when my gut tells me something is not right. I won’t support disrespect either. I have NEVER seen Bi disrespect Black culture, if he ever did it would “crush” me, but I would be ghost as a Cloud.

I am very upset, and its taken a bit for me to comment. I’m so insulted! One thing big bang works with black artists all the time I would have never expected this from them. The braids and scarf are not a big deal that’s imitation but BLACK FACE! TALKING VIOLENCE AGAINST MY PEOPLE WITH NO REASON! I’m so through……I am very hurt by all of this. It’s not that they should know better, they DO know better!!!!

It is very disappointing to think that people you’ve come to admire would participate in such acts. The reason I brought this up for discussion was not for anybody to feel hurt or pain. However, I wanted to make us all aware that even though there is a divide between the cultures (that seems to have diminished on the surface due to K-Pop’s popularity) there is still a long way to go. I think when one embraces something (be it K-Pop or whatever it may be), then you should be aware of the good, the bad And the ugly of it fully.
I am torn because I just very recently came to really get into TOP and Big Bang. While I don’t want to just straight out call all of them racist, I do feel these young artists need to dig deeper to TRULY understand the history behind the culture they admire enough to emulate musically. Once they take the time to really know and understand the racial sensitivities that still plague us to this day, then it’s my hope that they’ll REALLY GET how hurtful and just wrong it is to do these things. Something within will begin to “stir” and make it that much more difficult to purposely mock another race of people for a few laughs.

Doesn’t matter that it has nothing to do with him, that the dates and facts in it don’t add up (Rain was with J.Tune in 2008, so exactly what album and what concert and what DVD are y’all talking about?), doesn’t matter that the Media is using Rain by including him in their headline to sell their stuff and don’t care that they’re putting a mark on him again for nothing… it’s like ooooh, look everybody, spread this as news, let’s all read his name and fan-girl, so what if people see it and think he’s in trouble when he’s not, it’s exciting.

Why? well it depends on several factors (1) like Lotus said…some people are fame seekers like the term “anything for a buck” well some will do anything for fame, consequences be damned. (2) Some people don’t do any fact checking on their own because it’s tedious WORK and work is like the plague to some people and (3) and this may sound real funky but oh well it is what it is. Some people are just not too bright. They are “numb nuts” in the brain. They’re gullible and believe anything they are told, so they end up perpetuating complete fabrications simply because they’ve decided to believe it rather than question the information before them.
Yeah, on many levels it’s hell being a celebrity and sometimes I question why anybody would put themselves through it. Then, I think about those paychecks. LOL! Rich I could handle, but fame………………….
Seriously, I don’t know what publication the article came from, but I bet Bi can not wait to be discharged so he can get back to his career and get back to running it they way He wants to. I think in some respects his career will be the same, but in other respects some people might need to get ready for some changes. This man is about career Growth, you can’t mark time and get to where I THINK he wants to go. So all this trying to drag him into some dirt with JYP, I say “hmphf” honey boo boo’s please…..Bi is about to make headlines so far removed from old s***t, people’s heads will spin.
