R2B’s Shin Se Kyung Dishes on Her Kiss Scene With Rain

Shin Se Kyung has opened up about her kiss scene in the movie R2B: Return to Base with her co-star Rain.

The press conference for R2B: Return to Base on July 13, was attended by director Kim Dong Won, actors Kim Sung Soo, Shin Se Kyung, Lee Ha Na, Lee Jong Seok and the other actors of the movie.

On this day, meeting with enews Shin Se Kyung shared, “In the movie my character has a growing relationship with Rain.”

When asked if there was any kiss scene with her co-star, she answered, “There was. There was a sweet kiss scene with Rain oppa, which we shot and finished.”

In the movie, Shin Se Kyung plays the role of mechanic Yoo Se Young who works with the fighter pilot Jung Tae Hoon (Rain).

In the movie preview shown for the press on this day, Rain’s character winking at Shin Se Kyung while Shin Se Kyung responded with a smile.

However the actress then added, “But I think in the post-production the scene was cut out. It was a great scene but I’m sad it was edited out.”

When asked if the story would end with a happy ending she replied, “You will find out by watching the movie.”

Regarding the kiss scene, director Kim Dong Won said, “We’re still working on the editing,” leaving open the possibility the kiss scene would be shown in the final cut.

R2B: Return to Base, centered on the world of fighter pilots, will premiere in August.

  1. I despise jealousy. so I myself have been training myself to handle it well, I am not much of a jealous person anyway. Those who are jealous of Rain should head this advice train your mind to better handle Jealousy, by thinking of the other persons feelings, reaction, thoughts, who they are. If you do not know all that yet than that is when manners come in.

But, That does not mean it is the directer causing the problem it could be a chain re-action. Jealousy is like a virus it spreads through out the world.

  3. Some people just have jealousy of Rain and, they show it in different ways. America has their laws about what is to be shown on movies and tv and, Korea does too. Maybe that is why they have the movie in only select theaters here. Or because of budget, Some theaters do not have the captions to translate. Just a guess. About the kiss scene yes, if it were me there I would be like her happy too. To have had a chance to kiss him. But, people should not be raising fuss over it. I Love his kiss scenes, He looks like he is a romantic! It just makes the mind wonder around….

    • Christina,

The reason that foreign films and independent films experience a limited release here in the U.S. is because their audiences are not very large. So, it would not be cost effective to distribute them widely, to every theatre out there. Rain’s Korean movies will always play here in limited theatres, because they will have to be shown in foreign film venues with English subtitles. It’s a foreign film.

I encourage all of you to contact your local foreign/independent film venue in your own towns and request that they book R2B: Return to Base. If they know people really want to see the film, then they are more likely to book the movie. Of course, their booking the movie also depends upon how lucrative the distribution deal is with CJ&E Entertainment (the maker of R2B). If CJ&E isn’t offering a good deal for movie distributers here in The States, then we may not get to see it at all.

That being said, I know that the film is already supposed to premiere in Los Angeles and that the company IS working on subtitles for the film. So, they have thought of global distribution. Which is a good, good sign.

  4. We’ll see if the director has the guts to put that kiss scene were it should be. Sighh but I think that Rain is gonna take care in getting juicy characters to play from now on. I think he wants to make a statement in the movie business and to achieve that, he should do sexy scenes, romantic scenes, funny scenes, terror, heck, whatever he can find that proves to directors that he can do whatever they throw at him. The thing is to choose well does characters, that they provide him with stepping stones to achieve goals. Once he do that, directors will look for him to do bigger characters. I can’t wait to see him breaking that “asian/ only action limitation” cuz if someone can do it, it’s Rain. Btw, I’m noticing more and more asian models in stores ads, in tv ads, etc. We’re getting there girls!! 😀

To me, it’s just about who (a.k.a. The Powers That Be) wants to show what and when depending on an agenda we’ll never be privy to. It’s all just a crap shoot. LOL

    • “Spiel” is right! It’s weird though, I saw a clip from a Korean movie on YT with little miss Fugitive Plan B cop lady and the love scene she had in That movie was Ahem….way more hot than the one on the Kdrama. Let’s just say she knows how to “make it happen” in the front seat of a car. Hahahahaha!!

I guess I don’t get how they can be SO contradictory but in basically the Same industry, just one is TV the other is Film. If kids can see sex scenes at the movies or on the internet, they can see a REAL kiss (at the very least) on TV too. Go figure.

I’d say it’s a fact they don’t. However, Rainy Entertainment seems to be changing that fact. As far as his kisses, yes he would make a sista have to come up for some air….no doubt about it. However, I believe it’s that “hip action” where he Truly goes in (*so to speak*). “Nota” mean?

  7. They have patterned this movie a lot after Top Gun because they’ve never had their own (not since the original Red Muffler, at least), and so in my mind, seeing as Kelly and Tom got nookie, Rain and SeKyung will at least get to kiss. At least. I mean come on. This ain’t a Kdrama on Korean TV. Part of this film’s purpose is to “echo” Top Gun and Hollywood, so certain elements are bound to be in it, IMHO.

This article does its duty by making folks 1) chomp at the bit over the possibility that there won’t be a kiss scene and 2) even more anxious to see the film. Very strategic and clever, dropping this little tidbit, if I do say so myself. LOL

(I wish I could somehow watch the original from 1964, which was about the lives and LOVES of ROK pilots. I’d love to see how they handled that, and to just enjoy the story itself.)

I believe over in S. Korea, they are afraid to give RAIN anymore kissing scenes……you know why!?? Because RAIN’s kissing scenes are dangerous and vicious…in a good way! They can’t handle the truth..lol! RAIN usually delivers a “real kiss” in his movies/dramas(except for a few of the dramas, where the directors probably “limited” him). He has said so many times that he doesn’t mind doing a love scene, kissing scene, etc. in movies/dramas.

But you know what is going to eventually happen?? One day, America is going to “sweep” RAIN up and offer him a movie with a love scene, with his naked *utt out and all!(wishful thinking..) Ha! Ha! Watch the numbers go thru the roof with that one!

He was a lot younger and he might have felt that China in particular wasn’t ready to see Full House Lee YoungJae’s naked anything just yet. That was the country where Full House truly exploded and he and Song HyeKyo started the Hallyu tsunami. It took them a while to realize that he wasn’t only an actor, but a singer/pop star.

Indeed, even though the film is brilliant and has a slew of awards and nominations to prove it, the Chinese media gave it hell for the content.

          Hm. Just thinking out loud.

            BiA,

Maybe he was being a smart-*ss.

What threw me, though, was that I was thinking that the role he would have been cast in, at the time, would had to have been the student ringleader part, which was played by Leehom Wang. Why? Because, at the time, Rain was too young to play the leading male role. The leading male role, the Mr. Yee character, was someone 20 years older than Rain. And it was Mr. Yee who had all of the racy sex scenes. I can’t recall Leehom’s character doing much except angsting over the fact that he was in love with the leading lady and yet was forced to let her be abused by Mr. Yee (because they were spies planning an assassination attempt).

So, as you can imagine, I was totally baffled by his statement, because 1) he didn’t SAY he was joking, and 2) it just didn’t make any sense to me at all that he wouldn’t take such an incredible part.

But then I thought again and realized that there was another role available. The role of Liang Jun-Sheng. Oh boy. LOL. Jun-Sheng was another resistance fighter who was assigned the “pleasure” of “deflowering” the virgin Chia Chi in preparation of her seducing Mr. Yee. The motivation was that to be able to seduce a grown man, she had to know how. If this was the case, if I’m recalling correctly, we may have seen a naked hip or two in those scenes. But I’m not really sure. Like I said, it has been too long since I’ve seen the film.

Like Stephe said, the film was really on-the-cutting-edge racy. It even got an NC-17 rating here in the States, which is very rare and really limits your audience. So, you know it had to be something “special” indeed. So, maybe it was exactly like he said. The part he was offered was simply a little too sexy for YoungJae/Rainy boy at the time.

Not a lot of actors are daring enough to put themselves in that position right out of the gate. Rain had either just completed Cyborg, or maybe he hadn’t even done it yet. If he hadn’t done Cyborg yet, then he would have been setting a tone for his acting career that might have pleased HIM–but what would his Asian fans have thought? No, no, no, no.

And yet, for Rain to have been offered up the chance to work with Director Ang Lee and not take it just made me want to scream. Picture Colbert shaking his fist at the sky and shouting: “Raaaiiiiinnnnn!” That was Terri :-} after she read the English Translation of Speeding Instinct the other day. LOL.

Boy, that sure is a tough fence to sit on. It must have been real uncomfortable up there. Still, I understand why he might have been sitting on it.

Also, Rain would have had to speak fluent Chinese throughout the entire film. We have no idea how well he spoke Chinese at the time. Heck, I’m not even sure how well he speaks Chinese now. So, that may also have been too much for him to have handle at the time too. Who knows?

Oh well. All we can do is ponder unless he explains himself. Maybe he will someday.

            Terri :-}

*Added Note: I went over to Netflix and scanned Lust, Caution and looked for scenes with Liang Jun-Sheng in them. Frankly, that role is most likely the one that would have been offered to Rain. It was a much more minor supporting role, and one more fitting of someone who had little or no filmography under his belt. And yet it was a quite juicy role in that Jun-Sheng gets quite a bit of quality time on camera. He’s a sidekick, and so he’s on camera a lot, he gets a couple of sex scenes with the leading lady, and he plays a part in one of the most awkwardly painful “kill” scenes I’ve ever seen–except for the first kill in Ninja Assassin. The character is also strangely fascinating. I’ll just bet Rain could have done a great job with it. That being said, if that was the role he was offered, then I can totally see why he would have turned it down and done something like Cyborg instead. Oh, and there was a very clear shot of the guy’s backside. A bit more than a “naked hip.” But not a lot of nudity. So, if that was the part he was offered, I can see why Rain would have described it that way.

R2B is an action movie, after all. Not many kissing scenes make it into action movies–even if there is a hint of romance in the story. After all, kissing stops the action, and God forbid THAT ever happens.

As for me, if I were a director of a Rain movie, I would be trying desperately to figure out how to get MORE kissing in there somewhere–no matter WHAT genre it was–so that I would sell more tickets to a gazillion female Rain fans. But hey, that’s just me. LOL.
