  2. I loved Rain as Bokgu! I liked Cyborg & Full House, but ‘A Love To Kill’ has a special place in my heart. JH did an amazing job of losing himself in this character. I didn’t think of him as Rain acting as Bokgu. He was Bokgu from the moment I first saw him on the screen and his actions and words only helped to reinforce that impression. On a hypothetical note, I could SO see JH becoming like Bokgu if his life had gone another way (him not becoming famous). Losing a parent at an early age, an absent or distant father, and trying to support and protect a younger sibling only to have a traumatic experience would be devastating. JH has such a big heart and if he would have continued on a bad streak of constant rejection, disappointment and pain his passion and dreams could have easily turned into anger and hatred. His dancing could have easily turned into fighting. In an interview JYP even described young Rain as having a bit of a chip on his shoulder, thinking that it was him and his family against the world. He could have so easily fallen into that mindset…. Thank goodness for JYP, thank goodness for opportunities and thank goodness for perseverance.

    • Good observations, Maddie. And well said!

I think that was why BokGu was so very real. JiHoon didn’t have to find a moment in his life to relate and thus bring the character alive — every bit of BokGu was already there. All JiHoon had to do was turn inward and bring himself out.

Like when BokGu was destroying his brother’s living room after the accident on the roof, and just lying there as if his arms and legs were separate entities and didn’t know what to do with themselves. I could see in my mind’s eye JiHoon upending everything in his house after his mother’s funeral and the fire. OMG. Such a powerful scene. And so painful. And when bodyguard BokGu was holding EunSuk over that long, fatal drop to the concrete. His expression left me no doubt that if his brother had died at that moment, he would have dropped her without a thought, and only JiHoon himself will ever know where that expression truly came from.

There are many tortured souls in this world. Him being able to channel his into this incredible talent never ceases to amaze me.

  3. have yet to watch “a love to kill” but i’ve seen plenty of still images and video captures, and one thing i’ve definitely noticed: his entire way of “being” is different as he inhabits this role, especially his facial expressions and the way he carries himself physically. it’s fascinating to see how his non-verbal communication says so much. i must admit: i’m fairly straight-laced, but something about this particular character’s gaze is pleasantly unnerving. JJH as bad boy is compelling. anyone else remember an interview that he and im soo jung did during the publicity of “cyborg”, where he joked that she should play a sexy character in a thriller-type movie, and when she answered that she planned to, he immediately offered to co-star with her? they seemed to be kidding around for the most part, but i’m actually hoping they do a project together, like that–those two as villains would totally sell tickets.
