[article] Rain’s 2009 Ninja Assassin: An entertaining homage to Ninja Old School.

Cloud cover by: Stephe, Managing Editor ^@@^

This film columnist out of Great Britain has only now gotten to watch Rain’s 2009 Hollywood lead role debut, Ninja Assassin. And I must say it sure is nice to read a review where someone else understands and appreciates what an homage to old ninja films is supposed to do.

As opposed to the reviewers (and I use that term loosely) who clearly don’t.

He makes very valid points about the character throughout this piece, as well.

Thank you, Mr. Marples. Enjoy this very intelligent write-up, dear fans.

Look What I Saw: Ninja Assassin

Online Film section columnist James Marples tells us about what he saw this week.

Anyone remember the Wachowski Brothers? They were the guys who made the excellent though controversial V for Vendetta and the very excellent Matrix… unfortunately, they also made the other two Matrix films, which were both pretentious and created from terrible CGI (seriously, most of the time the CGI was just pointless…a rant for another time perhaps); and the Speed Racer adaptation, which was essentially an exercise in how many epileptic fits can be induced by one film. Remember them? Well back in 2009 they, presumably disillusioned by their complete failure to make a good film in 10 years, produced the little known (I think) gem called Ninja Assassin. Critical reception of this film was somewhat underwhelming, which I think is unfair; it’s very entertaining with little glimpses at brilliance that make it well worth a watch…

  2. Dear Terri!
My english is not very well sorry for it!
I’m happy because I’ve found this site because of Rain. I’m very excited when I sit down to see the net. First of all I check CloudUsa and read the new posts about Rain. Thank you so much your work with Stephe.
My first celebrity who I’m following is Rain. I’ve never done it yet. He is my first and only star who I’m interested in.
It would be nice to meet him someday, but I think it is impossible in Hungary.
So I’m glad to find this site and THE CLOUDS!
Waiting for Rain and LOVE HIM FOREVER!
    Love, Ágota

  4. I always said that Ninja Assassin is a movie that will get its honorable place with time and here you have a step to it. Mr. Marples don’t have an IDEA of who’s Rain but he recognize a good movie and a good actor when he sees one! We all know NA don’t do justice to Rain amazing acting skills BUT his skills as an action hero are sooo amazing that all in all it was a great means to an end that was to get recognized in Hollywood. Now, when Rain comes back, it will be time to show those acting skills that we love and hopefully he will get a really good movie to show them. Of course, Rain has to make serious changes in his managment to get a good movie and also GET HIS SONGS IN ITUNES for the love of God!!! I can’t possibly imagine the money he’s loosing just cuz he’s not in ITunes! Lord, is soo frustrating to have kpop in the radio and NO RAIN!! 😦

    • Mari,

Yes, it is frustrating that his music isn’t on ITunes. It really is.

However, I’m finding out (through my son, the musician) that making money mostly with your music isn’t the way it’s done anymore. Most musicians these days make less money from selling their actual albums than they do from other things–endorsements (promoting others’ and your own products), merchandise (apparel, concert goods, etc.), music licensing (composing original works), live performances, and producing.

It looks like Rain has plenty of revenue streams to choose from besides his music sales, which is very, very smart, because the percentage that a musician gets from the sale of music is really very small these days.

      • That’s good to know, thanks for the info. I thought they get more money selling it and of course every time people use their music for dramas, etc. I think they get more recognition than money when they put their music in Itunes but in the long run, they should get more money if their music is known around the world, right? Is a merry go around that never stops! I’ll just wait for him to do something about it cuz I don’t want to spoil anything for him in the future. But for now, I’m doing my part by asking for Mblaq’s songs in the radio. Kpop is getting strong in Puerto Rico, no doubt about it!! 😀

  5. it keep bothering the fact the whoever was managing Rain back then and people that helps to market him outside Korea, they never do a really good job. It almost feels like they don’t want him to succeed outside Asia.

    • Yeah, we’ve thought that someone has been sabotaging him for quite a while, actually… 😦

      • Yeah, I feel that too. It’s funny, no matter how much someone may try to circumvent a person from succeeding or reaching their goals. The Divine One (God as I call Him) has a way of removing all obstacles put before you, Especially if something is meant for you. (IMHO) Remember Bi didn’t go looking for “Mr. Richard,” Mr. Richard came to him.

    • Lluvia,

You aren’t the only one who has been bothered by it. Hopefully, he will sign up with a new management company who will do him justice here in the U.S. You don’t know how many times I wanted to strangle J.Tune. Sigh.

Seriously, this is one talented guy who deserves the best shot he can get here. (Which is one reason Cloud USA exists, by the way…)

    • I love Baby Bi but he needs to act like Cuba Gooding Jr. in Jerry MacGuire and and find a good managing company outside of South Korea and tell them “Show me the Money”!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He’s a Midas whatever he touches turns into gold. And whenever he shows those golden abs money falls down of the sky beside ladies falling to the floor after fainting.
He has the will and he works really hard. Any Smart, Intelligent, Manager would sign him. He needs to do a better research and stop making decisions base on friendship or people he knows on the korean business circle. He needs to get out of that comfort zone. He needs to be bolder on that aspect. I hope surely hope, that after he finishes his duty he will come back thirsty and starving for success outside of South Korea and Asia.

  6. I still haven’t figured out why this movie was not bigger then it was. I surely have seen worst movies that make to much money. The Artical was good and this is where I fell in love. I always smile my a** off when I hear myself say that.

    Like

    • Gee, NA wasn’t bigger because, unfortunately, it was released at the same time as Twilight New Moon back then. It was all about Team Edward and Team Jacob, at least in the U.S. A lot of us (myself included) found out about NA after the fact. NA was a movie rental for me, this is when I discovered Bi, after reading the DVD jacket and seeing his name. So my “love affair” began with NA as well. (SMILES)

      • Talk about a dumbass move.

I realize that it probably wasn’t ready for release when its original release date came around (March 2009), but dang, with all those months between March and November, you couldn’t pick a better one than when the Twi-Hards were gonna be in force? GAH!

        Stephe ^@@^

        • Exactly. I have no doubt that if NA had a different release date, more people would have seen the movie and been pleasantly surprised. Rain would have garnered more male fans also I think, because the Ninja genre hadn’t been out there for a long time. This was a damned good movie that would have made those memories of childhood Ninja movies come flooding back for a lot of guys. We already know how we girls feel about our favorite Ninja (SMILES). NA definitely would have been bigger if it had been the main focus in theaters upon its release.

      • Yea BIA, I remember now. I am a twi-hard and that’s proably why I didn’t even think about any other movie. But I am also a action movie goer. I don’t even remember seeing a trailer for this moive. I got it on bootleg and wanted to see if this guy (Rain) had any other action movies I could see. After searching on youtube, well like they say (the rest is history). I don’t know what it is about him but I can tell all of you. I am a fan of many actors and singers but I have never followed any of them. This is my first and my last. Also I don’t know about their fan clubs or websites but I can bet my last dollar they are no where near as great as this one.

        • Like you, even with Twilight mania everywhere, I NEVER saw a trailer for NA either. That’s what struck me. You know most movies show a trailer 9 million times on TV before it’s even close to opening. I will say Bi is not the first celeb I’ve followed. I did the whole teen idol thing in my growing up years like these “Bieber babies”, but what’s different about Bi to me is he seems/feels accesible. Even though he’s not. He feels like cool people and not affected by his celebrity, at least it’s the vibe he gives off. I don’t feel “snob” coming from him or “I’m a celebrity kiss my @.. coming from him. Also, I like how the Clouds (fan club) ACTUALLY get to interact with Him directly. Following Bi is definitely a unique celebrity experience for me as well. (SMILES)

          • BIA, I forgot to mention that is was not just that I saw it for the first time on bootleg. My bootleg man (that’s what I call him) lol. suggested the movie to me. He knows I love action movies and told me I would love this movie. Even he has good taste. By the way in my neighborhood everyone sells bootleg movies. Only in the hood does these things happen. lol. I love the Big Easy. (smile)
P.S. I do get that same vibe from Rain which is proably why I love him so much. Not even in my teens did I react to such a person I may never meet. I am so glad thou you and Stephe and the rest of the staff loves him and gives us a chance to see all Rain. Yall are so talented and just great. love yall

Hugs and Kisses to Stephe/Terri & Co. from me as well. You guys do awesome job for one named Rain. He SO has to meet you guys, at least, someday. Lord, if he Ever chooses to do a fan meet in the U.S. I may have to “beg” upon a plane ticket to whoever’s city just to be in the house. (SMILES)

            • Aw. Thank you BiA. It’s our pleasure. I mean seriously. It’s not like he’s difficult to look at or anything, right? I mean, someone needs to twist my arm over here and make me look at ONE more Rain photo, all right? *chuckle*.

              It would be nice to meet him someday, yes, but I honestly have no idea how that would ever happen. But it doesn’t matter. What matters is we make him so freakin’ famous over here in the U.S. that he can’t walk down the street in any city anywhere without drawing a crowd. Now THAT I would love to see. :-}

Can I get a hell yeah, ladies?

            • He’s worth every second of our time. He has earned it fairly and squarely by the way he has carried himself throughout his career, in trying to meet his goals and dreams. JiHoon on the inside and Rain on the outside (Jesus H. Louise, how could that much hotness exist) are quite the combination.

Is there anyone else like him walking the planet??? @__@

And I know what you mean, Gee. I have never ever EVER followed any other celebrity in my life. I mean EVER. And I would have thought people were insane if they had suggested I do so. The thought would have been completely baffling to me.

And yet, me and my best friend apparently went crazy together, and ended up founding an entire fansite for this guy. What the hell is UP with THAT??? To this very day, we’re STILL trying to figure out how that happened. LOL.
