From Stephe’s desk: Of lawsuits and other current events across the Rainiverse.

Hi there, dear Clouds and Rain fans. Thanksgiving in the U.S. will be here tomorrow! Who’s traveling? Who’s snug as a bug in a rug at home, cozied up and ready for the holiday?

Just thought I’d share some thoughts swirling around in my head today…

Of 비상 [飛上]: 태양가까이. Korean movie “Punch”, presently number one at the Korean box office, is opening nationwide in North America next month (California, Seattle, New Jersey, Chicago, Philadelphia and Atlanta). Why am I mentioning this? Because this movie is by CJ Entertainment, just like Rain’s fighter pilot blockbuster, Soar: Into The Sun/Flight: Close To The Sun. Which means that if enough people here raise a clamor to see Soar/Flight… is it possible that CJ might bring it too, next year? Holy cow! *praying frantically to the theater gods*

Of lawsuits and word on the street. I’m sure you’ve all read some of the articles that are circulating around concerning Rain and/or his father or somebody suing Star M in order to recover monies rewarded a few years ago for Rain’s ruined concert in Hawaii and the botched North American leg of Rain’s 2007 World Tour, as well as punitive damages for Rain’s damaged reputation. The problem is that none of the write-ups that we’ve seen seem to have their facts straight, and they’re all saying different things. Not to mention one of the major news sources that is usually pretty careful with their news hasn’t written anything about the situation at all. (Red flag!) And so, until the hot mess sorts itself out and there is something more concrete, we’re steering clear of it here.

With that said… we would support Rain looking for compensation for monies he shouldn’t have paid and making people accountable for his ruined reputation wholeheartedly. He didn’t cancel anything. The authorities did, and the courts did because of the “Rain name” lawsuits (by The Corporation Who Shall Remain Nameless). His career and his reputation have never recovered from that whole debacle. To this day, journalists blame Rain for “turning his back on his fans” and are always questioning his character, despite the fact that the man would have stood on a wooden crate and sang without a mic for his fans if only the authorities had allowed him to. Everybody threw him under the bus, for no good reason.

I just saw some guy in the Media the other day say something snide in his summer article, about how folks buying tickets for the Best Show should watch out because Rain is “notorious for canceling his concerts without notice.” So yeah, Rain’s reputation is STILL suffering. He missed a golden opportunity to make his way into the U.S. (which was hyped to the MAX), paid a ton of money that should have been paid by companies responsible for ruining the shows, we in Atlanta were cheated out of our one shot at a concert, and if you think we’re going to forget any of that any time soon, you’re sorely mistaken.

If there is truth to Star M being sued, and/or facts about who exactly is behind it, time should tell.

Of 8th Cloud business.  If any of you official 8th Clouds haven’t been over on The Cloud Fan Site (in South Korea) for the past week, here’s an FYI: the executive board has posted that Rain 8th Cloud membership goods are finally being produced and that they are really sorry for the delay. They will let everyone know as soon as delivery starts. Here is a tentative preview of one of the items, the club T-shirt…

… with the design on it that Rain drew for us last spring, while he was training for and filming Soar/Flight. kekeke!

(Just about everywhere you look, if Rain is on set, a Krispy Kreme donut box is somewhere there too. LOL! He sure was scarfing some KKs down during “Rainism” music video shooting, remember? Lawdy, I’ll bet he’s missing the hell out of them now…)

Because of a lack of web-hosting support or a way to effect the necessary website maintenance themselves (the web-host that originally built Rain’s official Cloud Fan Site refuses to provide any further site management service for it), the executive board is considering moving to a new web address. This is not a done deal, only an idea at the moment, and they are asking for all 8th Clouds’ opinions on this sensitive subject over in the Cloud-filled Room (구름 가득한 방, Item No. 3624).

And one last thing… Some Cloud Letters didn’t get moved in time before JiHoon graduated boot camp (I can certainly understand that, there are a hell of a lot of them), so the Cloud will be printing letters out and physically sending them on to him at the 2nd recruitment center. So please keep writing and encouraging our soldier.

Of Cloud USA TV’s premiere broadcast: Thanks to all of you who joined us last night, for making our first video show a complete blast! Livestream was hiccuping a bit and not streaming well during the initial broadcast, which irritated us to no end, but the replay was awesome and all in all it was a terrific experience. Heck, long-running Rain can never be bad, right? Haha! We’re already working on and looking forward to the next new show, and we’ll be re-airing the first show soon, so please stay tuned.

HUGE thanks to Jim and his Livestream online studio, where all the “magic” happened. Thumbs up! 😀 (There is a permanent link to Cloud USA TV near the top of our media blog sidebar, to your right.)

Happy Turkey Day, everybody! We’ll see you after Thanksgiving.

  3. Well I have been away from Cloud USA and anything else Rain related for a bit. However there is always something/someone trying to slander Rain’s good name. So for me unless Cloud USA posts something concrete about it, I am not buying into any of it.

On a side note, very exciting news about the membership goods. 🙂

    • Agota,

      Welcome!

We certainly hope you Clouds in Europe get to see the movie too. If you have any foreign film venues in your city, contact them like I did and request the movie.

      I actually got a response from one of our venues here in Atlanta saying they would look out for the film, which is a good sign. :-}

  5. Well where one door closes, another one opens. Bi may have missed his musical entree into the U.S., but the door to his acting in the U.S. seems wide open. I’m so happy to see the membership goods will be coming soon and so stoked they put the design he drew on the t-shirts, can’t wait to get it.

Happy Thanksgiving to all my Cloud sisters and (brothers….who want to remain nameless) SMILES!

    • Thank you kindly, Mari.

Hope your Thanksgiving was blessed. Mine was extremely relaxing. My mom cooked all of the food before I got home on Wednesday night and when I came in the door, she said, “Well, it’s all done. So, you can relax.” I was going to cook a dessert, but on Thursday morning, Alex and his girl (Ana) came in and decided they wanted to make a homemade cheesecake for dessert, and so that was out of the way. So, all I had to do was chat, hug people and tuck them in when they dozed off after eating so much food. It was totally awesome. LOL.

Yes, blessings sure have come to K-Pop this year. I do hope that the K-Pop surge is here to stay and that other international music will become popular in the future.

I had an interesting discussion with my parents last night, by the way. It was while we were watching a movie presentation of an off-Broadway musical revue called “Forever Plaid.” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forever_Plaid). The story took place in the 1950’s, and so the men were singing 50’s tunes, which of course, having been teenagers in the 50’s, my parents love.

Several songs included verses in other languages, and one of the songs was a Nat King Cole song. So, at some point, we started talking about Mr. Cole and how talented he was, and that led us into how, back in the day, it was completely normal for many of the popular singers here in the U.S. to sing songs in other languages, as well as in English, or to include lyrics in other languages in their own songs. It was also perfectly normal for singers from other countries to be popular and to have satisfying careers here in the U.S., singing songs in their own languages.

For example, Nat King Cole could sing in several languages, and was just as popular in Europe as he was in the U.S. during his long career. Edith Piaf, a French star with an incredibly gorgeous voice, was famous worldwide and was extremely popular here in the States in the 50’s. Even I remember listening to her songs when I was small.

Which brought us around to K-Pop, with my dad wondering outloud why people nowadays thought it weird that people would want to listen to music from other countries, because back in the day it was such an absolutely normal thing to do. It was an interesting discussion, but none of us could pinpoint an answer to the question.

Anybody out there have any ideas? At what point did it become “unpopular” to sing in or to listen to songs in other languages? When did the U.S. become such a freakishly “English only” zone when it came to our music?

On one hand, no one thought it was particularly odd when I wanted to study other languages at school, but on the other, I don’t remember anyone particularly encouraging it either–even my parents. And my classes were horrible–boring as hell. I only had one teacher (an amazing polyglot in college) who taught me anything useful. He was an incredible teacher and encouraged all kinds of things–including listening to music in other languages, which I wholeheartedly embraced.

At the time I was minoring French, and one of my friends was French-American, and we spent hours and hours listening to Michel Sardou, an extremely popular French singer in those days. Two of my favorite songs of his: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqICiNkgyWo and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMUsI2wufE8. (Btw, Michel Sardou was actually the first time I saw “guy-liner”. LOL.)

Of course, I was a middle class kid with no money and absolutely no idea what in the world I would ever do with these languages I was learning. So, basically my parents and everyone else just humored me. It was complete irony and fate that I ended up living in Europe for 6 years with my Army husband and actually had to use some of the meager language skills I had learned. Some of my fondest memories are from those times.

But as strange as “foreign” language learning was to many of my peers even back then, most of us kids still listened to music from outside the U.S. A lot. And back then music from other countries was even harder to find than it is now, with YouTube and the Internet. Usually, you had to have a friend who could “get” it for you. But we managed somehow.

So, I wonder what in the world happened? It’s so bizarre.
