(Seoul=Yonhap news) reporter Li Enjeong = “Now the first scene of the life of “Rain” has finished. The second scene of my life will start in the army. If until now I have been like a solid pine tree, when I come out of the army, I would change to become a flexible bamboo tree, haha.”
A day before he entered the army, we had a telephone interview with Rain (Jung Jihoon) on 10 October. We asked him about his mood, and he conducted the interview with his usual cheerful voice.
The interview was conducted when Rain had just said goodbye to his mother at her graveyard, and was on his way back to Seoul.
“I was praying for an hour, and had a lot to talk to my mother. I will serve the army diligently just like I have been as a singer. And I will take care of my father and sister just like I have been doing before.”
On 9th October Rain gave a free concert at Yeongdong Road outside Samseong Dong as his final stage before he entered the army.
Rain “was deeply touched seeing the over 20,000 audience”. He told us his feelings. “As I sang each song, the memories of my 10 years since my debut were brought back in rapid succession. The songs brought back the nostalgia. Tears were in my eyes but I told myself not to cry.”
“When I am in the army, I would like to organize my 10 years story between times, and I hope to publish a book called <20s, let’s triumph> in future”. He laughed as he told us this.
The following is our Q&A with Rain about his entering the No. 306 army on 11 October:
Q: How did you spend your time after the date of entering the army had been confirmed?
A: After the news came out, I received dozens of calls “let’s have a meal, let’s have a drink”. I was in Pusan a few days ago with the “Fly Up” movie crew for a press conference at the PIFF and met brother Go Su, sister Kim Soon ah and we had a drink together. I also talked to Director Gang Jeh Keuk who sat at the next table. Also, yesterday JYP came to the after concert celebration party. He encouraged me that there will be many better pieces when I come back from the army. Most of the good friends around me thought “I should live well” haha. Now I am on my way to edit yesterday’s concert for broadcast. Today, I am still spending my time on work.
Q: We saw that you had already cut your hair short at the concert.
A: I wanted to show my fans first how I looked with my hair cut. So I cut it short myself, then I went to the beauty saloon for treatment. If I don’t put on hair styling products I think my hair style would look like that of an elementary student.
Q: What’s your feeling at the last concert before you enter the army?
A: When the stage started, the memories of my 10 years after my debut flashed back in succession. The audition with JYP; the dancer period for JYP and Park Ji Yoon; the release of the 1st album clashing with the world cup, but getting to No. 1 with “Instead of Goodbye”; the release of the 3rd album and winning the grand award; the two times nomination of Times 100; the MTV movie award. They all came up and I was filled with emotions. When I sang “How to avoid the Sun”, “It’s Raining” and all the other songs, they brought back the treasured memories. I promised myself I would not cry at the concert, so I had been holding it all the time.
Q: If you have to choose 5 most meaningful consequences in your past 10 years..
A: Through the drama “Full House” the name of the singer Rain was known throughout Asia; with my popularity in the Asian base I was able to be on Times 100; chosen together with Brad Pitt as one of the 50 most beautiful people in the world by People Magazine; meeting the audience on the stage at the theatre in Hollywood during the premiere of my first major movie “Ninja Assassin” in the USA; the moment I received the MTV movie award with the same movie. All these were unforgettable memories to me.
Q: You had endured many ordeals. When was the most critical trial?
A: When I became independent of JYP in 2007. All the attention from home and abroad was “can Jung Jihoon break away from JYP”. Such attention gave me a lot of mental pressure. Actually I worked in perfect harmony with JYP as partners. He took care of the whole album process in terms of composing, recording, mixing, mastering etc. I looked after the choreography, stage costumes and broadcast strategies. We had good division of labour. However since I stood alone I had to decide everything, from A to Z and there was a lot of stress. I therefore had great attachment to the my first album “Rainism” since I became independent. Luckily the songs “Rainism” and “Love Story” in the album achieved good results on music charts.
Q: Don’t you have the thoughts of putting down your own challenges in a book? Can you tell us beforehand the title of your book?
A: I had the thought of writing a book on the first scene of my life up to now, but this was delayed because I wanted to write it myself. When I am in the army, I plan to organize my stories in memo form in between times. I knew nothing when I was a teenager. However in my 20s, I realized it was a formidable society, and that compared to academic ability, a person having ground breaking ideas will be more successful. I want to write about such thoughts and how I overcome the times of my frustrations. If I have to conceive the title of my book in advance, then it would be “20s, let’s triumph” hahaha
Q: How do you want Rain’s next 10 years to be like?
A: Up to now I have been like a solid pine tree. When I am discharged, I want to change to a flexible bamboo tree. All this time I don’t bend to things and choose the standard frontal attack. I wish to be like when the wind blows, I could move with the wind and keep my composure. Also I want to invest more in myself. Recently I want to do calligraphy and to learn about calligraphy. I like the countryside more and more, so who knows, may be when I am old I could be doing farming work.
Q: Have you not seriously thought about raising a family in your 30s?
A: All people work hard for a happy life. To me, the greatest happiness is the time you spend with your family. I wish to have a family but it is not easy for me. I had girl friend but with my work, I couldn’t devote a lot of attention to her, and it became difficult to each other. Perhaps all people have such experience. Mutual understanding is necessary. If I get married, in order to focus on my family I will have to fold up a lot of activities. At that time, may be just an album and/or a movie in 1 year.
Q: Please say something to MBLAQ whom you personally trained.
A: It would be a very good thing if the kids raised by me could become tiger cubs and give big attacks. It would be good if MBLAQ could do even better than me. I want to say to MBLAQ “work hard constantly. The career of an artist is momentary. You have to be strongly determined as you may not know when the risk will come and your career may be interrupted.” I have been living with the attitude that if I have to start from the very bottom again, I will be able to do it. I wish to emphasize this again.

Ladies, do I detect a change in tone on marriage? He said “if” he gets married as opposed to when he gets married. Could be the interpreter. Or maybe it is that difficult finding someone who’s as understanding about his schedule as he’d like her to be. (Hope you’re not getting this post multiple times- having some trouble posting)

I loved reading this article. I understand where Rain is coming from. I totally agree that being able to spend time with your family is the happiest thing in the world. So if he has to scale back in his career in order to obtain a happy family life then that is definitely ok with me. You only live once in this life and everyone deserves to be happy. I feel Rain and his women will have to come to a happy understandable compromise in their relationship. I truly hope he does find the right understanding women for him, he deserves it.

Rain’s girl is there somewhere but he have to find her or maybe he found her already, I don’t know! Maybe he will find her now in the military. The thing is that she must be mature enough to understand his career and everything that comes with it. She must be willing to make sacrifices, to let him pursue his passion but at the same time he must learn to give her space and be there for her too. Also, when kids come along he will have to slow down his career to see them grow. That’s the way it should be! His fans will have to wait and give his wife and family the respect they deserve. But I’m sure that Rain is gonna be there for us for a very long time. This love and the close relationship we have with Rain is too beautiful and strong to end easily.

Well with Rain it’s like he puts out something new everyday. I can totally understand why he would want to cut back on certain things. I just hope he can find that girl that can understand how grueling his career can be.
Also be able to handle being under scrutiny. Especially if she’s not used to being in the limelight because she will have to face some of Rain’s overly aggressive fans and the criticism. However I am sure that girl is out there somewhere. 🙂

Totally agree. I think his ultimate girl is out there, if he hasn’t found her already and I would hope he would/will indoctrinate her about all his life and career will entail. As a woman, I know the hardest part will be the scrutiny of his “off the chain” fangirls. But I think, once he puts the word out. ‘Hey, this is my woman/wife, I want you all to give her space and respect our privacy,’ I think his true fans will abide by his wishes. The “crazies” (you know who you are) will just be that anyway, what can you do? “Beef up” security, I guess. (SMILES)

their will me a girl out their for rain to be understand him and went through a lot of rain have been such a busy person and she have to deal and understand him so well to be able to have a LONG life relationship and she have to fear with as well his like celilia say grueling his career . and accept Rain have to in his place and Rain also have to give her space for
showing a loving Family for his kid and his girl rain deserved all that is human being like us too we can’t be SELFISH not let him have his life and own happiness u know!!
and now that stephe and bia explain me after he married and cut down his dozen i think rain will continue his business and also spent good time with his works and half with us i mean movies CD performance what ever rain schedule to do…as so..and YES Rain will be with us for LONG time just like Bia say until he turn gray no matter coming to his future we will LOVE rain and continue to supporting to end

I read that when he gets married and starts raising a family, he wants to cut back on activities, not stop them. He wants to only do a few projects a year instead of dozens. I didn’t see anything about retiring until he gets really old. That’s all.

Yeah, I agree with Stephe. I don’t think JiHoon will retire completely until he’s WAY old and gray. He loves to perform too much. Like she said, I do think that he will scale back once he does have his own family, as he probably should (IMO). After all, they would need to see him much more than his fans. In my earlier comment, I said that I hope he finds the right balance between work/personal relationships. I think he will find just that, when the right partner comes along. His priorities will change and he’ll have to rearrange some things, but that doesn’t mean he’ll retire. Don’t worry, we’ll have Honey Love to entertain us for a long time to come you’ll see! (SMILES)

With age comes wisdom (hopefully). You learn a lot about yourself as you age. I know certain things that made me cry in my twenties, make me say “whateva” now in my 40s. I do understand his need to be able to “take life as it comes” more so. I think most people have been through times in their lives when a situation rolls up on you and you just have to step back and say “let go and let God” and deal with what comes. I do hope for him he can find the balance between work/personal relationships. I think if I was his girl, we’d have to figure out a way to be together or he’ll have to figure out just how ambitious he wants to get careerwise. I know it will be a challenge, but if he wants a wife he’ll have to get a “ride or die” chick who’s tough enough to roll with the inevitable punches that will come or step back from some of his goals. Personally, I think if he finds the right partner she will be willing to support his ambitions and hopefully he will do the same for her, with whatever her life ambitions are. That way we still get our movie star and he’ll get his wife and family then everybody’s happy! (SMILES)

I can only say that I speak from what’s inside me and what’s true to me. I learned a lot from people older and wiser than me. Who are no longer with me, but always in my heart. I’m glad that you feel what I say is worth listening to. I still consider myself a “pupil” of life, so to speak. That way you never feel like you’re too old to continue learning and being open to new things, which is what I want to always do, if at all possible. (SMILES)

Yes I understand that but for me being young (i’m 26) but wise in a way of knowing somethings but still have to learn more and be open to learn those things by listening to someone who is older and wiser to is the greatest thing, I guess you can say they know the way of the world. Your right you’re never to old to continune learning and open to new things so thanks for that statement. ((SMILES))
