K-Pop Fans Converge on New York City’s Central Park for Flash Mob Dance

As the Korean Wave of popular culture known as Hallyu becomes a worldwide phenomenon, local fans of Korean pop music, or K-Pop, joined forces in New York to call for more K-Pop performances with a dancing flash mob in Central Park on June 6.

The performance may not have been a shock to bystanders, situated in the open grassy space of the 843-acre park, but more than 130 fans of diverse nationalities and backgrounds gathered to have their voices heard.

Their campaign, initiated as a Facebook group, aims to encourage Korean artists to venture into the American market and hold more concerts there.

“Come to New York, Shinee!” and “Tae Min, I’m here” read a sign in Korean held by Cris Segara, 20, who says she studies Korean by reading the subtitles on the K-Pop star’s videos.

The performers prepared for more than a month, combining the choreography of some of K-Pop’s most popular groups, such as Super Junior, Girl’s Generation, Shiny, and Dong Bang Shin Ki.

Mary Stelloui, 17, of Delaware, expressed her excitement by dancing to her favorite K-Pop music together with others who share the same dream of meeting their Korean idols one day.

Miranda Ditmore, 14, of Bronx Riverdale, said she learned about K-Pop three years ago from her older sister and was immediately fascinated with the music and the artists. She also practiced the group’s dance moves for weeks in order to participate in the event.

The rising interest in K-Pop worldwide is serving as a new medium of public diplomacy for Korea, and is especially fitting for younger generation.

After the flash mob performance, the participants all moved to a local Korean restaurant on 32 Street in New York’s Korea Town for some Korean cuisine.

  1. Sorry for the late response.

Wow! this just shows you that Kpop is no joke. If it weren’t for you , I would have been just continued to be envious of other people doing it in other states.

When I first came across CLOUDS, I was shocked that CloudsUSA came from Austell, which is about 20 miles from where I live. Still, it’s awesome to know this. Some people probably wouldn’t expect for something like this to be in South or in Georgia. Just goes to show ya, Rain and Kpop fever is becoming infectious and there will not be a cure for it no time soon..lol.

Anyways, I would like to know more about this. This really sound like fun. I read about some of those Kpop concerts that they have in LA and New York, but it would be nice if they had one here in Atlanta metro area( if I had my pick I would like to watch MBLAQ, especially my baby G.O., oh yeah!. and 2pm.It would be nice to watch Rain also, but he”s proudly serving Korea.) I’ve also read about other Georgia natives and Southerners wanting people wanting Kpop concerts to come here. I admit to being shy doing flashmobs, but I like watching them and your meeting seems interesting. Where do you guys normally have these meetings at?

    • Hi, An,

It’s very nice to meet another Cloud in our neck of the woods! :-} Yes, there actually are several Clouds in Georgia, although they do tend to be a quiet bunch.

As we’ve gotten together only once so far here in Atlanta, we don’t really have a regular meeting spot just yet. We hope to start meeting on a more regular basis, though, if we can. Hopefully, at least once a quarter. That’s the plan anyway.

This time we’re meeting at the Woo Nam Jeong Stone Bowl House in Doraville. It’s on Buford Highway: http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/9/1449151/restaurant/Doraville/Woo-Nam-Jeong-Stone-Bowl-House-Atlanta.

      The meeting is this Saturday, June 30, at 7 p.m. I sure do hope you will be able to join us. We will be giving away some Rain prizes there too. :-} If you do hear about any other Georgian Clouds who love Rain, please do tell them about the meeting. It will be a very Rainy night. The last one was a blast. :-}

      • Hi Terri,

Thanks for the info. I’m fairly familiar with Doraville. If time permits( work ugh! I work some weekends), this would be great. Hopefully, my boss will have kind heart to give me the day off on that day.
