[ETA new info] 비상 [飛上]: 태양가까이… The new title for “Red Muffler 2011”?
— Cloud cover by: Stephe, Managing Editor ^@@^
*ETA 5/6: News source 10asia has posted this article where they say they’ve spoken to the producers of the movie 비상 [飛上]: 태양가까이 (CJ E&M) and that the translated title is “Take Off: Closer to the Sun.” They may mean that the producers told them this, OR this may merely be 10asia’s take on it. Not sure, but I thought it of interest. An English-friendly CJ E&M site is HERE. — ^@@^]
[Cloud USA 5/5/11] This is the new movie title in Hangeul that is circling the Internet from Asian sources like Naver and TV Daily all the way to Movie Daum and HanCinema. And what exactly does that translate to, anyway?
Well, depends on who you ask.
Some English news sources say Flight: Close to the Sun. Some say Soar: Close to the Sun. Others say Emergency: Fly Close to the Sun. And others say Fly Up: Close to the Sun. (Google and Bing Translate say Emergency [On The Fly]: Close to the Sun. Babylon says Emergency [The High] : Near the Sun.)
All the same general idea… Korean is one of those amazing languages where every word that has an English counterpart has many English counterparts.
We started last year with rumored title “Red Scarf”, after the legendary 1964 movie of the same name. Then working title “Red Muffler.” And then “Living In The Sky.” And now we have “*your preference here*: Close to the Sun.” Interesting.
What we’d really like to do is ask the production Powers That Be who are making the movie and/or Rain how they would translate it into English. Their intent is where the buck stops and would be the truest translation anyone could ever get of 비상 [飛上]: 태양가까이 (Bi-sang: Tae-yang-ga-kka-i). (That “emergency” business really needs to be played up! Emergencies can be flights, but not all flights are an emergency, and English-speaking movie-goers need to get the idea that something important is at risk here!) But we have yet to even see that anyone has gotten a direct quote, although the word “confirmed” has been used. Hm.
Ah, well it’s not like any of this is a problem, after all. In the days to come, regardless of whether someone uses Red Scarf, Muffler, or something close to the sun, we’ll all instantly understand what they’re talking about anyway, right?
Rain’s movie! 🙂

P.S.: Forgive me if I don’t change my media blog Muffler checks to Flight Close to the Sun checks. “Muffler check” is short and sweet with a cute ring to it, we don’t know whether or not we’re going to get yet another title down the pike, and you know what I’m talking about anyway. Cool.

Thanks Stephe! We can always count on you guys for the latest. You’re right “비상 [飛上]: 태양가까이 (Bi-sang: Tae-yang-ga-kka-i)” and whatever the official translation will be, doesn’t really matter. It’s Rain’s new movie, and I’m anxiously waiting for it. 🙂
