Gangnam-gu (강남구) is one of the twenty-five districts (or gu) that make up the city of Seoul. There are cities (si), counties (gun), districts (gu), towns (eup), townships (myeon), neighborhoods (dong) and villages (ri) in South Korea at the municiple level; above that are the provinces (do), special self-governing provinces (teukbyeol-jachido), a Special City (teukbyeol-si, which is Seoul, the capital), and metropolitan cities (gwangyeok-si).

Rain named an honorary ambassador for Seoul’s Gangnam-gu

Rain has been named an honorary ambassador for Seoul’s Gangnam-gu area, and a presentation naming him the work will be held in a meeting room inside Gangnam-gu office on 4 May, at 10 am.

Rain won’t be paid for this work. It was said that he was pleased to accept their offer when they asked him to work without pay.

Rain has recently grabbed world headlines by being chosen as one of the 2011 Time 100 final list.

- He grew up and went to school in Anyang, a city about 25 km from Seoul. It’s very pretty and surrounded by mountains. The equivalent here would be sort of like growing up “in the suburbs” because all he had to do was hop on rapid transit (train) to get to Seoul.
  
  Gangnam District is one of the most affluent areas in the southern part of Seoul itself.
