  8. I love to watch old movies from the 40s to 60s and one of my favorites features actress Juanita Hall. She played Auntie Liang in “Flower Drum Song” and she also played Bloody Mary in the movie South Pacific. The uniqueness of these roles is that Ms. Hall was African-American (for those who may not know) playing an Asian in one movie and Polynesian in the other. Also Rita Moreno played Tuptim in “The King and I” starring Yul Brynner, during this same time period. Proof that one need not be pigeonholed by their race/ethnicity in film. Hollywood did this during a not so pleasant time period. A Black woman played an Asian woman in the 50s but Rain can’t kiss Naomie Harris just two years ago. WOW!

The link to Ms. Hall’s bio and subsequent info. on the casting of “Flower Drum Song” is below, if anyone is interested:

    • @ BiAlamode, hahahahahaha My sister now you know I feel ya! But Korea is still living in those times unfortunately. They just don’t know us they only know like a lot of others what the media puts out about us, and its fear of the unknown. JiHoon however has traveled the world and wanted the kiss scene. This is my one thought that has been bothering me, I’m hoping JiHoon’s celebrity doesn’t blind him from reality like it does some when they get to hollyweird, and if he remains the same sweetheart he is now, hopefully through him Korea will change and learn more about who we really are as a people.

      • @lotus,

I don’t think Ji-Hoon ‘the man’ will change too much other than trying to do what you say, “bring Korea” into 2011. If he continues to pursue acting in the U.S., the inevitable love scene will come up again. His Korean fans will have to accept him kissing women that may not necessarily be Asian. It’s the only way HE can grow as an actor. He can’t stay ‘traditionally Korean’ and have a blockbuster career in U.S. movies (or maybe he can I don’t know). I love tradition just as much as the next person, but sometimes tradition has to be set aside to get to another level, as he is trying to do. Fangirls/netizens stifle him in this regard (*my opinion*). I’m not saying all his movies should have love scenes, but they are almost a given in American film productions…..especially if you are HOT! (SMILES) I mean the other option is, he can do American movies with Hot, Steamy love scenes for us and then they can cut out the love scenes for Korean audiences.

Hollywood was a little more “daring” back in the day, even within the turbulent times. I mean Sidney Poiter in “Lillies of The Field”, “To Sir With Love”, “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” and I can’t forget (“they call me MR. Tibbs”)….”In the Heat of the Night” the movie. This was Ground Breaking stuff for that time period. Those who cast him in these roles in the 50s and 60s had “BIG Huevos!” Now Hollywood is the “RE-MAKE” capital of the world and some of us are still “young” enough to remember the original versions of some of these movies that they claim they are re-making for a new generation. Well you may want to wait until we “young old folks” are long gone, cause most of these re-makes SUCK ROCKS! (*my opinion*).

Anyway, my two cents for what its worth! (SMILES)

    • Great comment, BiA.

And I know you were speaking to another subject… but I have to say that what you said also makes me think of how ridiculous people are when they actually act as if actors should only play their own ethnicity. I mean how dumb is that.

      • Exactly, it’s called “acting.” By virtue of the very concept, one suspends his/her own reality to bring a character different from themselves to “life.” That’s where acting “SKILL” comes in. When I saw the movie “Ray”…..damn if I didn’t believe Jamie Foxx was really him. I had seen the real Ray Charles perform in person years before. Jamie “became” Ray truly. That takes skill.

When I first saw “Flower Drum Song” I didn’t even realize the Auntie Liang character was really a Black woman. I did “sense” something different, but SHE had the character down pat. It made me think…..”Hmmm, what is it about that lady? However at the same time you TOTALLY believed she WAS Asian. LOVED that movie!!

He didn’t know what to do with all that hair so he used various ways to keep it out of his way and I love, love what he did with it. Gaaahh My very fave was the style he used in that CF with Lee Hyori. I am sure she jump all over him by that time too. Who wouldn’t? He got the body of a god from head to toes. Sighhhhh!!!
