K-RnB: Tracks that would have worked in English

Hello everyone!

So glad to have a moment to be with you once again. While writing this editorial, I’m happily listening to T.O.P.’s “Turn It Up” full blast! I’ve thought about this subject for a while, as there are quite a few songs that would have done well on the American charts if released under an American company. It’s no wonder “It Hurts,” by 2NE1, was the number one track to cover on youtube: it wasn’t sung fast, so we non-Korean speaking fans could pronounce the words better and it hit all the right notes of a favorite genre: RnB.

Yes, K-RnB is quite frankly some of the most beautiful music I’ve heard in a very, very long time. Mostly because RnB isn’t released as much in the US anymore. So when I do hear it, it doesn’t matter if it’s in Korean, Chinese or French (yes, I can’t wait to show you!), I fall in love all over again. Below are a few examples of Korean RnB done quite well.

First, the most obvious pick, Bi (Rain)!

Yes, I know you’re probably thinking “why this one and not “Love Story”? Well, I didn’t fall in love with Bi over Love Story: “Escaping The Sun” was the video that caught my attention; his beautiful Usher-like voice mixed with his MJ dance moves…YES! This was the video that made me stand up and take notice….

  2. Call me crazy, but I thought Rain WAS an RnB singer. I think K-Pop media is just like American mainstream media. They love to “claim” ALL the popular musicians for their genre (POP). When clearly you can hear who’s an RnB singer. Personally, I think Bi could be even more “gritty” and “soulful” musically, if the powers that be would allow him to experiment that way (ie; Teddy Pendergrass, Bobby Womack….type soulful). That’s saying A LOT coming from me. When Bi sings “No, No, No” that, to me, is a little glimpse of that type of “soulful” I’m referring to. Honestly, I’d like to see what he could do with those types of RnB songs, not necessarily the ones that generate slick dance moves. Put one of those songs on me Bi and I – AM – YOURS – FA – LIFE fa sho shawty!!!! (Even though I am already)……(SMILES)

  4. I think there are many songs that Rain sings that would do well in the American market. While I enjoy and love the catchy songs that he sings from time to time, I love hearing him sing those soulful RnB notes. I mean Rain can sing anything but when he sings more RnB type songs….it just gives me chills.

    • @cecilia185 I could not have said it better. I also, think there are many songs that Rain sings that would have done well in the American market. I truelly love How to Escape The Sun. It is one of my favorite songs by him. I love it even more when he sings it live. You get a chance to hear his rich, R&B, soulful voice come out even more. I think this song could have done well in the American market. There have been so many that I cannot even name them here. Yes I agree Rain can sing anything but the R&B songs he sings are the ones I feel deep down in my soul.
