We’re only on Episode 6. Are you serious?

Runaway/Fugitive‘s future “doesn’t look all that bright”?  When we’re only on Episode 6 and the show’s 20 installments go all the way to December?

Do you make a habit of jumping the gun often?

And since when is second spot peanuts? There’s no shame in Fugitive’s game, folks!  Seriously?

O.o  (yeah, that’s us looking at Nate News weird-eyed)

HanCinema 10/13/2010 — Ko Hyeon-jeong beats Rain’, ‘Big Thing’ became number one Wed-Thurs drama after winning over ‘The Fugitive Plan B’

Ko Hyeon-jeong’s ‘Daemul – Big Thing’ seems like it will continue its solo march by dominating Wed-Thurs drama.

According to AGB Nilson Media Research, ‘Daemul – Big Thing’ which went on air on on October 13th, recorded 26.4% viewer rating. This drama passed 25% viewer rating only after 3 episodes. It is looking forward 30%. 3rd episode showed 4.9% increase over the previous episode.

‘The Fugitive Plan B’ which was projected to be ‘Daemul – Big Thing’s’ good opponent, recorded only 15.1% viewer rating. This is 1.1% decrease [below] last episode. Especially, it is showing a huge gap to ‘Big Thing’, so its future doesn’t look all that bright.

On the other hand, ‘Mischievous Kiss’, which went on air that the same time with ‘Big Thing’ and ‘The Fugitive Plan B’, showed a ‘super low’ 6.0% and became the last among Wed-Thurs dramas.

  2. well as for Cyborg(there was a very deep message in that film)…and since folks don’t put to much effort into learning about mental health issues they kinda don’t even consider a love relationship could take place in this type of setting or what could even be a starting point to develop one among mental health patients. JiHoon said in the press conf. for that film, (and i believe he spent some time observing mental health prior to taking on the roll)that he hoped more attention could be paid to this illsness. i just believe the lack of interest in this area of society may have played apart. i am a fan of JiHoon, yes. but i like good films regardless who plays in them. JiWoo is an individual who Jung JiHoon is portraying, and that’s what i look at when watching this film. Rain is a musical/stage performer. is JiHoon believable in executing this character? (to me, yes) everyone has their own likes and dislikes, but for me, this storyline and the people playing their roles are good so far. there’s enough twist and turns to hold my interest. that’s saying a lot for me cause i truly have zoned out of the US drama (never did watch soap operas) and movie scene here are re-making over and over again and this is boring to me. but anyone who watches kdramas already know that intros and backgrounds take place in the beginning episodes, so what’s boring about learning who is who and how and why they fit into the storyline? i don’t quite get that. again, to me JiWoo has nothing at all to do with Rain. it has everything to do with “is JiHoon making JiWoo a real person to us)..for me, yes.

  3. Well I’m gonna put my two cents in, I love the JiWoo character his style and charisma are wonderful, even the funny faces it’s all apart of his character, I find them funny and they come in at the right time. This is why its called comedy, action, drama other wise their be nothing special about it. I will say his character is not dark he’s more up beat he’s also not a super hero thats unrealistic, He doesn’t win every fight I like that also no one wins every fight, I hope they give it a chance, and I’m not being bias if I’m entertained I like it if not I don’t.

  4. I was thinking about this subject last night while watching eps 4 and 5. I was thinking that maybe it’s specifically because there’s such an Asian flavor to it instead of just a Korean flavor. Meaning that there are so many different languages spoken in any given episode of the show and not everyone is into reading subtitles. Lots of people lump a movie with subtitles into that “artsy” foreign type of movie that they don’t show in mainstream theaters. Maybe they feel that they’d have to do so much “work” to watch this show if they don’t know all the other languages. It’s just a thought… I know we in the U.S. and other countries that have to watch the show with subtitles anyway will feel differently.

I had also read about Cyborg being pulled out of theaters after it came out in Korea and I was flabbergasted. I haven’t watched it yet but I will (so much other Rain stuff to catch up on… phew!). That sort of character seems like an actor’s dream, something to really sink your teeth into, like when Leonardo DiCaprio played a mentally challenged boy in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape or any of the characters Johnny Depp has played instead of just taking it easy and being in romantic comedies and action movies. It seems as if they want him to stay sort of stagnant and not stretch, just continue choosing Lee Young Jae-ish characters time after time. I’d say Kang Bok Gu too but even that character seemed out of the norm for him at the beginning of the series.

    • i think it’s not about the characters, but the flow of the story itself was kind of boring… (my opinion and perhaps lots of movie goers out there)
sometimes we just need something entertaining, though it’s pretty dumb.

but quality speaking, CYBORG did meet that best quality… but still, it’s boring… it lacked that something…

  5. Well, I just think it’s too early to be predicting ANY show’s demise out there. I mean, good grief.

Everyone’s not going to like everything, for certain. And there’s nothing wrong with differing opinions and predictions. But let’s at least get halfway there before we shoot people down out of the sky. Give them all a fighting chance.

I was amazed when Cyborg was so rejected, when films in that genre do so well over there all the time. The writing and the characters were pretty brilliant (which people in Europe picked right up on) and the way Rain portrayed Il-Soon showed a HUGE leap in his natural range, which impressed the heck out of me because it meant he wasn’t some one-trick pony. He truly could create characters and ACT. (Bok-Gu was another character he proved that with.)

Don’t get me wrong. I adore Lee Young-Jae and Full House. I’m always going back to watch it, heheheh. Sang-Doo was really layered in his own way and took me on an emotional ride. But only doing Young-Jaes and Sang-Doos won’t take a career successfully into an actor’s 30s (and even Bok-Gu ended up with a bit of a glamorous side to him when he cleaned up). It takes a brave K-popper to throw himself into the role of a drab, unfashionable mental patient and be so convincing at it.

He wasn’t supposed to make us scream and drool for him in that movie; he was supposed to make us laugh and cry and feel and think back on our own unconventional loves in our lives.

But then, I am from a different culture and a different mindset… *shrug*

  7. my last opinion is that sometimes folks don’t like using their brain power, they like what’s familiar and turn away when facing something new. plus, it may also be the many languages that are used in this drama. don’t know. i guess i’m just as intrigued about the viewers response as i am about Fugitive. wow, i’m getting two puzzles for the cost of one. THAT ALONE SHOULD TAKE FUGITIVE to the #1 spot, hahaha (just joking) i think the ratings will increase.

  8. @CloudUSA….i love your post. it’s a question i have been asking myself for a while now. (fans wanting Rain to stay the same or portray the same type of character and natives in Korea responses of support)…i was reminded about his Cyborg movie. it was reported that film was pulled out of theatres in Korea, but look what happened in Germany and even here in the US. it won an award at the German Film Festival and played for over a year (continuous)on US tv. i just finished looking at new US Films hitting the theaters here and guess what? “Red” (Action, Comedy)starring Bruce Willis and Morgan Freeman (can you imagine Freeman in comedy? but reviews attest to it being stylish, exciting, laugh out loud fun. and guess what, these are the same words i’d use to describe Fugitive:Plan B. and this also tells me that Fugitive is right up there with the international flavor of the current releases. as a matter of fact, it has gone a step above because it is inclusive of the Asian countries. correct, we don’t always expect Rain’s projects to be #1, (just my opinion), but this one should be because it is one of the types of films that is being released across continents and again it steps up it’s game plan by filming all across Asia, not just using english language, but multiple languages.

  10. How can you have a COMEDY, and people not expect… COMEDY?

    Duh, hello?

And doesn’t it stand to reason that as things like, say, Kevin’s real murderer being revealed, Keiko’s father turning up the heat, and Ji-Woo falling deeper in love with Jin-Yi start to happen, Ji-Woo’s character will become more and more serious?

In order for him to change satisfactorily by the end of the show, he has to start off in a whole other place.

Sometimes I don’t think fans truly care about Rain’s talent at all, just the fact that they want him to stay the same damn way forever without any growth whatsoever. And by the way, from what I’m reading, Korea seems to be the ONLY place Runaway/Fugitive is slipping, while the rest of Asia seems quite over the moon. Which doesn’t surprise me.

He’s always had a harder time in his own country. Hell, shouldn’t THEY love him the most? What gives?

    • I certainly don’t mean to infer that Rain should always win everything and be Number 1 in every single thing, because that would be pretty unrealistic, to tell the truth. And it would get kind of boring if he never had to fight for anything.

It’s just that there are times when his fan base simply appears to be disconnected from him. When, like J.Tune Creative, they seem to have “left the building.”

      That’s not good.

As a few people said below, I’m not the hugest fan of Rain’s over the top facial expressions but they seem to have toned that down a lot since the first episode. We’re seeing a lot more sides of him than just the caddish jerk or the jerkish cad and I’m liking it.

Plus… why would I not want to stare at Rain for an hour. I mean, come on now!

I think koreans like their dramas to be cookie cutter type, if it is different and fresh they will drop it like a hot potato but if it sticks to the tried and true then the drama becomes popular, thank god for foreign fans that like variety in their entertainment, Fugitive will be back on top despite the pundits, they will have to eat their words… 😉

  13. i already said i love this drama. yeap, i love Rain, but in truth the drama is definately a first(for me anyway) that really, really shows an international flavor, languages included. i remember the producer announceing that “this is not just a Korean drama, it is an Asian drama”),,,lovin the easy flow of dialoge. what i like is the suspense that is developing. questions, questions all over the place. seems no body can be trusted. JiWoo’s partners are all working in co-hoots with or for someone else. and Kie who says he loves Jiny, has allowed his ring to be removed from his finger without protest. is Kia getting ready to go head on with the big man over Jiny? what? suspense! even the darn Korean police, chasing after JiWoo (who is not the actual murderer of Kevin), can’t wait to see what happens when this is revealed. this drama has so many twist and turns until it keeps me engaged even on off show days. i’m trying hard to sort it out, but this is the kind of thing i like and holds my interest.
easy plots don’t do for me. i haven’t seen Daemul nor do i intend to see it. when i watch anything about politics i want to see it coming from “INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATIBE REPORTING”. let’s face it politics is an area where what you see on tv, whether in movies or dramas will always be clouded/shaded. Fugitive, on the other hand can really be a real situation that can or has happened. who know’s. i don’t think JiWoo’s expressions are over the top at all. in fact they are so unexpected, until they bring laughter out (something that’s good for the soul). i love this drama even without the eye candy. and lastly, not every actor here is eye chatching, but they are damn funny. Fugitive, comedy, suspense, drama, it has all of those and more.

  14. Oh, Plzzz!! That’s why I don’t believe in critics. The Fugitive is excellent and you want to keep watching just to see how Rain resolve this case. Also, when I am watching the episodes my eyes are glued to the screen coz there is soo much going on that I feel like gonna miss something if I don’t. Rain has show me another layer of acting that i didn’t know. He is soo goofy, crazy and funny that I can believe it. Ji Woo is such an exciting character with so many layers that just for that I wanna keep seeing the series. The cast is excellent too, Kai (Henney) ia another character that have me hooked coz I don’t know where he is going with Ji but what I do know is that he seems suave and elegant but inside he is tough as nails. Rain and Henney is a powerful and heady combination. The love between the police and his girl is soo cute too. The girl is feisty and have all members of the police dept. in the palm of her hand. LOL Keiko’s father give me the hibbie gibbies with his psyco character. I don’t know what Ji Woo is going to do with him. My advice will be stay away of Keiko coz her father want’s to kill you in the most awful way.LOL So there are a lots of reasons to keep watching the series and I am not going anywhere. BTW the eye candy is really good too. Rain looks soo handsome, elegant, sexy, GaHHHH!!! Oh well, you understand my drift. LOL 😀

  15. if Jiwoo had less over-the-top acting, Fugitive might have had better rating – dont know who to blame… Rain for making those ridiculous faces (yes, i dont like it), or the director who let Rain making those expressions… they are just a bit too much.

its pilot episode had a good start with 20% rating… but lost it all they way here. Not trying to be sceptical but…

perhaps it will improve the rating later… while “Daemul” actually looks better…

still remember how i was so excited when Daemul’s production people expressed that they wanted Rain to be the male lead… just bcoz the lead female was awesome on her last drama, but Rain turned it down for Fugitive

If only Rain could appear on both =.=

    • Actually, the over-the-top comedy does take some getting used to, but I don’t think that’s it. I think that the ratings are so low because it’s an action/spy thriller/comedy/drama. It’s like it can’t decide what it wants to be. And that turns some people off, especially those Koreans who are used to their dramas sticking to a particular “formula.” Or who prefer to watch lighter stuff. That is what I think is chewing up the ratings right now.

The thing I like the MOST about this drama is that it doesn’t appear to play to any formula at all. The plot is twisted, everybody seems to be betraying SOMEBODY, and I can’t for the life of me figure out where the writer is going with this. THAT is interesting to me. And I predict that eventually THAT will be interesting to a LOT more people. They just need to give it time. That’s all.

Oh yeah. And then there’s Rain. Rain’s lips. Rain’s hands. Rain’s abs. Rain running. Rain fighting. Rain kissing. Rain being portrayed in a completely different way.

Oh yeah. And there’s Daniel Henney. And Lee Jung-Jin.

Sigh. I mean seriously. What’s NOT to like?

      • as what Joel Silver said “people dont go watch a movie (drama) for the actors” … so.. if the drama itself ia a chaos, who cares about how many hot males they threw into the drama… really?

true that it did not follow the usual Korean drama “Formula” esp. Lee Na young’s character. though they still attached some familiar formula into Lee Jung Jin & Yoon Jin Seo’s characters and the story revolved around them.

The “IT” factor why the rating keep sliding down… dont know… we can keep arguing and still can’t come into an aggrement.
i myself, only watch 2 eps coz i only got 2 eps downloaded so far

however, what makes a play less enjoyable is usually because it’s simply have no enggaging elements which can be anything, either the plot or the characters.
so far i hate Rain’s overboard expresion, and the plot seems all over the place.

i’ll wait to watch the entire series to give a full review though (or at least find out what’s wrong)
Yeah… it has Rain so i’ll bear even the worse.
