What does 20% mean, exactly? KBS Worldi answers.

[Cloud USA] Hello, lovely Clouds.

We were ecstatic to read that The Fugitive: Plan B‘s premiere broadcast garnered a 20%+ viewership rating and ultimately took the top spot on the ratings chart.  Go Rain, we thought.  And then we thought again.

What does that 20% rating really mean?  How many people were actually watching the show on television when it aired for the first time over in Korea?  That would be good information to have, right?  We thought so, anyway.

We also wondered whether any global numbers were being counted towards those ratings.  For example, if we watched the show on KBSWORLDi.com, would our viewership numbers count in Rain’s favor, by bringing the overall ratings number UP?  Or would it even matter?

Well, since my mama always taught me that a) there’s no such thing as a stupid question, and b) if I wanted to know something, then the best thing to do was ask, that’s exactly what I did.  I contacted KBSWORLDi.com (KBS America) and I asked them for the facts.  Here’s what they said:

1) Viewership ratings in Korea are measured using sample households. Currently, there are two companies that measure viewership in Korea – AGB Nielsen and TNmS. Each company has about 1500 sample households with meters from which to gather viewership data. 20% viewership means 20% out of those 1500 households in Korea are watching a particular show in the same time slot. You can project it to estimate the stats for the entire country (about 17 million households in Korea as of 2010). We usually say 1 household consists of 4 or fewer people, so you can get a ballpark number of viewers of a particular show.  [Terri: So, 20% of 17 million households is 3.4 million…close to the 3.2 million estimate I recently provided in a comment on one of Cloud USA’s open threads here.]

2) As far as we know, there are no global numbers being counted officially. But since the U.S. is one of the most important countries when it comes to the film and entertainment industry, it’s easier to be popular around the world once you get big in the U.S.

The point they are making with comment #2 is this:  KBS America (KBSWORLDi.com) is the only official outlet of KBS programs in the United States.  So, it stands to reason that a great way to promote Rain directly to U.S. (and Korean) entertainment industry professionals would be to create a higher viewership for Rain’s dramas on KBSWORLDi.com and on local KBS WORLD TV stations here in The States.  So, although KBS America knows of no way that global numbers are being collected officially, our voices can still be heard…if we’re loud enough, that is.

So, ladies, here’s Cloud USA’s Plan Bi:

  1. Check your local television providers and find out when KBS World will be airing The Fugitive: Plan B in your area, and then watch it.
  2. If KBS World series aren’t being offered in your area, call your television provider and ask why not, and suggest that they really should be offering them.
  3. Visit  KBSWORLDi.com, buy some points, and enjoy the first two episodes of The Fugitive: Plan B with English subtitles, which were launched on their website today.
  4. Spread the word to other Clouds about how, when and where they can watch The Fugitive: Plan B with English subtitles on KBSWorldi and KBSWorld TV channels.

Finally, KBSWorldi also told us that they are about to launch a promotion on their website to celebrate their service of The Fugitive: Plan B. No time-line was given, but we’ll keep you posted.

In the meantime, Clouds, please go forth and make some noise for Rain!  Sorijiluh!

    • Raindasy,

What kind of trouble are you having with regard to signing up with KBSWorldi? It was a pretty painless process for me, so I’m curious.
