As we’ve already said… our only requirements are that everyone respect each other and respect Rain.  (Please don’t read this to mean that this has to be some kind of Praise Fest.  Everyone, even Ji-Hoon, ticks somebody off at one time or another.  We’re just saying play nice.)

And of course, don’t forget that our Cloud USA Forum is a most excellent place for Rain love, fan communication, and self-expression.

Rain fans united!

  1. Divalcious you are right, sometimes the male/female line in Asia is blurred and it get’s me mad. They don’t show sex openly but let it pass in other ways. Rain is manly for most of the times but other times he let his female side show too much. There is a Commercial where he is with white pants and orange shirt; his posture is really womanly, i don’t like it at all. If people in the US see that inmediately will clasify him as that without another glance.

  3. If I could have it completely my way and it were totally up to me…

Rain would come into the U.S. music industry exactly as he is now, with NO changes whatsoever. I love his Korean blood and everything that makes him Korean like you wouldn’t believe.

The problem? I just don’t know how realistic that scenario is.

  4. The Love Song video and song worked in Asia and the There Goes My Baby video and song worked in the States yes, because they each catered specifically to the different needs in each culture. Likewise, if you reversed them/switched countries, I dare say they would not have.

Usher would have been too risque and they would have ridden him out of town on a rail. The Love Song concept and main premise would go beautifully here, but things like the armored Bling and long lashes representing his character’s soul would not have (without him already being well established). And Rain already knows that, or he would have hit MTV USA up with his video by now. He’s a smart cookie that way.

If we see Love Song released in the States, he will retool it for American audiences without losing what makes it special, much the same way as he did his Legend of Rainism Tour. (Check out the videos from Vegas and the overseas stops, and note the differences… his hair, certain songs like “Nan,” the encore, etc.) I think he knows Love Song might lose some of what makes it special with a revamp and might simply leave it as is for his established fans, including us, and come to the U.S. music industry with something completely new and in keeping with what makes it tick. It is unfortunate but just picking up his stuff and plopping it down here won’t work and he knows that or he would have done it by now.

We’ll love whatever he does in a heartbeat, but the U.S. music industry is a whole other animal.

Just thinking about what he’s eventually going to come to the table with is damn exciting…! Don’t you think?

    • I responded to Mari just moments ago, but my statements are reflected in yours as well. Yeah, Rain has got his foot in two VERY DIFFERENT markets and he’s going to really have to figure out how to satisfy both or not (SMILE). You are right, when I first started looking at these K-Pop singers through my interest in Rain, I said……”my goodness, these are the prettiest damned boys I have ever seen!” We know full well all that “prettiness” will not fly here in this industry, not to that degree. The lines of male/female in the looks category is too blurred for most in the U.S. mainstream. An American audience is going to want those lines CLEARLY drawn………Yeah Stephe, he knows!

  5. Go Usher!!! I looove his music, every time I hear OMG gotta start dancing!! Great song and this song is really good too. Great video, well developed, great sceneario like in the desert, lovely woman and he looks great. But I have to said that Love Song is better to me and let me explain why. I heard people say that Rain copies Usher and to me that’s sooo wrong. They are two different artists who happen to love profoundly MJ music and style. That’s the end of similarities to me. Rain is soo profund in his lyrics. They are lovely, different in so many ways to what we as US music consumers are used too. Usher has great beat, is more commercial and is in the US market sooo is allowed to be more open in his music and videos. We have to remember that Rain is limited by korean culture, by the people who are his main fans and by the asian media. Usher is not. Sooo That’s why I said that to me and solely to me; you can said otherwise, Love Song is a better song and video. Rain step over boundaries impossed to him since he begun his career and Love Song is an excellent example of that. I believe that korean woman see Love Song’s video and blush at the thought of a man near them in a bed. We, on the other hand, want to take him right now and right there. Rain knows this and even though he step a little outside the line with Korean culture he brings himself closer into our way. I don’t know but I get chills every time I see Love Song and he goes to sing over the lady and near her ear. That’s so sensual to me cause he almost touch her but don’t, He desires her but can’t have her. The sexual tension just sizzle over the whole video. Can you imagine how it would be if not for the limitations of korean culture and media? The man just sweats sensuality and I can’t wait to see him in a movie that allowes him to tap fully into that. OMG!!! It’s going to be awesome!!!!

    • Ohhhkay… You know, I haven’t watched the Love Song video but now I’m going to. Marisara got me all interested over here… lol.

If he didn’t have the limitations that he has imposed on him, we might have our heads pop off at all the sexuality he would exude.

    • You are so right Mari! I can’t imagine how tough it must be at times for Rain to want to expand his boundaries and not be able to do so. He’s REALLY going to have to decide how far into our market he’s going to go. I would hate for him to unwittingly offend his core base of Asian fans, but if he plans to continue to expand into the U.S. then some MAY GET a little offended because here he can really open himself up musically.

I also wonder if this is the real reason there was no love scene in Ninja Assassin. Was the Raizo character kept chaste so as not to offend Rain’s Korean fan base back home. Taking into consideration the actual storyline and it being an action movie, a passionate kiss at the very least definitely could have made the cut…..(case in point ANY James Bond movie). Ninja Assassin was an American production with no restriction in that regard, so I just wondered. I heard that in the beginning Rain mentioned possible love scenes in the movie, but as time went on it became “mums the word” on the love scene and then it was a “no can do” on the love scene.

If he continues to expand to the U.S. as we hope he will, his core fan base may just have to get used to him being more sexually open in his music and movie roles because that is what American audiences like. He doesn’t have to get vulgar, there is a difference, but like Mari I also feel that he just has way too much sensuality with no real outlet.

He is the sexy, sensual Korean star that needs to be allowed to open that door and hopefully his countrymen can accept that.

  8. My personal thoughts on the whole english vs. Korean music thing is that I think Rain sounds better singing in Korean. In the few english versions I’ve heard of his songs, he sounds kind of cheesy, but that’s probably from his accent. He can convey much more feeling in his native tongue, of course. He DEFINITELY needs some help with pronounciation of some words and also the translation (case in point, Love Song eng. version). I think he should have someone help him write some great songs in english, not translate them, because we all know that Korean to english translation does not always make full sense.

As for breaking into the U.S. market, I think he’d have a better chance with doing movies first. Pop stars here are a dime a dozen and mostly not good at all. If he’s going to get into the music business here, he’d do well to do a couple really awesome “Hip Song”-ish types of songs with really good videos to go with them. Gotta showcase that this hot Korean dude can dance and looks really good without a shirt on. He needs a really good hook to get him noticed here, maybe some sort of collaboration with someone like Timbaland or Puffy. Oh man… the thought of his hot voice singing over one of Timbaland’s excellent beats really gets me going. Phew!

Some of you guys were talking about him being on Dancing With the Stars earlier, which made me cringe. I really can’t stand that show and it seems like it’s mostly B stars or worse that get on there. He doesn’t need to be lumped in with that sort of crew. He also DEFINITELY should not be on any BET show. That channel is the worst. In my opinion BET just perpetrates really bad stereotypes. I agree with BiAlamode on her thoughts on him doing a show like “Undercovers”. Something with reputable producers and a good story line that will get lots of viewers.

Anyway, these are just my opinions! Please don’t anyone go off on me! Lol…

  9. @tissitu,

That’s cool…..he doesn’t have to do an English album. Ultimately, Ji-Hoon and other K-Pop artists are already influenced by American music. R&B is not born of his culture, it is American. He, Ji-Hoon, has listed Michael and Janet Jackson, Usher and also Stevie Wonder as musical influences. I even saw him sing a snippet of Luther Vandross’ version of a Carpenters classic song at the end of an interview. If he did make an English album, the only thing that would differ is that he would sing his R&B songs in all English as opposed to singing in Korean with a few English infused words. Which isn’t too far off what he does already. I do get it, the music industry “sucks” in general anyway. Heaven knows for those of us who grew up with R&B, what you hear passing as R&B music now is just a “shadow of its former self.”

I honestly think movies is the way for him to go here anyway. He can then do as fellow Asians Jackie Chan and Jet Li do and that is make movies here and also in their native countries without skipping a beat. He can give to his fans on both sides of the world. I just feel personally, those of us who love him here should be able to have something of his works in our native tongue. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect. Doesn’t have to be a continuous thing. However, I do know Ji-Hoon will do what Ji-Hoon wants to do……no doubt! Whatever that is Bi, I’ll be waiting patiently!……….

Lord knows that boy has something special; I just want him to stay loyal to his roots.

I don’t really need an english album from Ji Hoon I do like to know the translation but I enjoy learning and listening to the songs in Korean, etc… I think it makes me more inspired to learn his language and his culture. I DO NOT want him to be Americanized. I started listening to him and other Kpop artists to get away from American music. For him to change just to break into the market would be a trajedy.

    • I agree whole heartedly with tissitu! I don’t need him to sing in my language…communicating thru song is all that I need. I started listening to him in another language and I loved it. I don’t see any of our “American” entertainers taking the time or effort to “customize” their stuff for all languages. And personally, I wouldn’t appreciate Usher or Omarion singing in Korean. Don’t even want to see that! I’m embarrassed that he is correct, he almost has to do this to “break” into the American market.

I have always said I appreciate that Rain wants to “reach” and communicate with all of us, but I love his language, culture and music just the way it is.

It’s such a beeeautiful song with profounf lyrics but when I saw the correct meaning here in the blog (songs section) there was an alement of sensualitity and intimacy that was lost in translation. It’s not the same meaning to said “hands, once where so wanted by me” and said instead “the familiar hands of yours push me away” cause when you said familiar is that you know my body well; the body you have loved. There is love and touch involved there and not only simple desire!!!! Gosh!! I am blushing just thinking about this!!!! Sooo what I am trying to said is that Rain lyrics meant much more than that.

HE SHOULD ALSO make a few appearances on BET’s “THE GAME”. it is kinda like the black version of “friends” but about athlethes and their relationships. this would introduce him to the R&B/hip hop scene and BET will be on his jock. Also he should be the love interest of Malik’s mom or Melanie should cheat on Derwin with Rain. • I haven’t watched DTWS since the first season. It’s a fun show but it bores me stupid. I just… lost interest in it or something.

But there is no denying several things: 1) It’s one of the MOST WATCHED shows in the U.S. 2) It is one of the MOST ADVERTISED/CELEBRATED shows in the U.S. and 3) even celebs here jump through all kinds of hoops just to get on the show for the exposure. Many of them campaign every year for a spot (and don’t get on) because they know the public is hooked on it. A huge part of the population build their week around this show.

So, seeing as a huge part of Rain catching on here is getting him seen and exposed to as many people as possible, it’s kind of a no-brainer.

That gorgeous face would be seen by millions every week. He would absolutely KILL any dance they put in front of him like a pro (the way he wore his dress slacks alone would slay the female audience). The show also has a live band and live singers — what if he even managed to sing some Great American tune for the heck of it?

      S. Korea would have an even bigger fit than it did over MTV, seeing as popular versions of this show are in other countries across the world and here is Korea’s Son being seen every week on the one in the STATES. They would have a live frickin’ feed for as long as he appeared.

DWTS is just an idea (and unfortunately, as each season starts in the fall, Rain will be in the military before the next one starts, so this conversation is moot anyway), but this is the kind of thing that could help him here. People think if he would only have a tour here, that’s all it would take, but that’s not true. The thing that Rain needs here is constant EXPOSURE and a lot of it.

There are an awful lot of people here who will never go to a Rain concert, and will never see Ninja Assassin, so he’ll have to be sneaky and get then another way… like through their TVs on their favorite celeb show or weekly drama or soap opera or etc.

      Stephe ^@@^

      Like

      • HERE, HERE my sista. It’s all about the EXPOSURE as you have said. DWTS really lost it’s real “credibility” when it started to get stars, quite frankly, like Rain. The ones who did not necessarily have Ballroom Dance experience, but Dance experience none the less. The first season was all about the stars having NO dance experience, ballroom or otherwise and being taught to dance at pro level by the end. However, the show became a hit and the rest as they say………

Reality shows alone are making some people celebrities and I’m like “OK, Really?!”…….case in point “Mike the Situation”. No offense to Mike, but he falls into that WHY-Are-They-Famous category. Celebrities like Rain who have truly worked hard for many years to crossover to new markets……you’re right Stephe, DWTS would have been a no brainer.

But ALAS, he will be in the military so we’ll just have to hope that he gets plenty of U.S. movie scripts to mull over during that time period. I think this should be the route he takes. Music is still an option of course, but music markets change so rapidly. By the time he returns from the military, he will be a 30 year old (STILL Beautiful, Hot, Sexy and ALL THAT) however, he may not want to fall in line with the latest crop of “teenybops” out there. WE LOVE him true, but let’s face it “teenybops” RULE the music industry. I wouldn’t have known who the hell Zac Efron was without seeing all the “hoopla” surrounding him and High School Musical…….(SMILES)

I can’t say it enough, JTUNE so dropped this ball a long time ago. Once it became apparent that he indeed wanted to crossover to the U.S. market, they should have IMMEDIATELY created a special team to field any and all U.S. offers as well as, “scout out” U.S. projects that could be the right fit for MAXIMUM exposure for Bi. Bi’s talent and drive would have done/will do the rest!!

You are absolutely right. Slang is not the same for every culture out there and maybe using the word “slang” wasn’t appropriate for what I was trying to said. What I meant was that the people who translate his songs should use words that preserve the general meaning of Rain’s lyrics and at the same time keep the musicality, they should soung right as a whole in the english language. For example, “baby” is a word generally used as an endearment and everybody recognize it as such. The word “showty” ,on the other hand, to me is new in the music business and I didn’t knew the real meaning up until recently when there was an explanation of it in the blog. These words are use now and everyday other words are going to come up but the people who translate has to do a good job to keep the integrity of the lyrics. Translation is not an easy job; you have to work it to get it right, the sentence construction should be flawless, specially when it comes to music cause it should sound right to a general audience and keep the meaning of the artist’s thoughts when they wrote it. That’s what I meant. Sorry if I offended someone with what I said before. LOve and hugs to all.

  19. @ marisara,

English street slang is not something that is known across the board by everbody who is U.S. born. Slang terminology is something that comes natural to those who partake of it daily. I am African-American and I don’t know all the street slang that is out there from my own community. I would also venture to say that street slang in many instances is different for different cultures, as well. What may be slang in the Asian community is, I am sure, different in the African-American community. I am not sure how much slang Rain uses in his music.

Oh and thanks for the heads up on SAD TANGO! He dubbed his english in (I LOVED IT!!!) And JiHoon himself wants to make it in the American ENGLISH language market, And you are right I can’t understand some so called english speaking music either, Also I love all Latin music as well as classical, jazz, blues etc. Now this you can GENERALIZE! 22. Absolutely, definetely, looooove his voice no matter the language and will buy his cds anyway. Rain’s voice is so beeeatiful, profound and melt your socks sexy that the language is not important to me as a fan. However, if he wants to make it in this side of the ocean is neccesary for his career that he learn english well. He knows that but is waiting for the right time to do his cd in english. Rain will do it when he feels comfortable speaking and singing in a stage. The same way is difficult for us to learn korean; it is for him. His effort is there in those english songs he has done!! I loooove Sad Tango in english cause got a great beat and sounds right. Don’t know if is translated by Double Dragon too but is great. We have to admit that people in the US are picky which don’t make any sense to me cause there is some US singers that speak perfect english and you can’t understand what they are singing anyway. I know cause my first language is spanish and I have to pay real attention to some songs in english to understand them. But the important thing is that they sounds good to the audience and I think Rain got it but to do it right the song should be translated by someone who knows english slang, you know, someone with common street english knowledge. Also, I think it will be good for Rain to do duets with other singers in english just to introduce himself in the US market. I know he did something with Omerion, is niece but he have to keep doing it. There is Shakira for example, she is doing fine in the US and I know that duet with her will be soooo hot that the stage will have to be fireproof. LOL At the end is a matter of time cause Rain have something other singers don’t have and that is creativity and the will to get his goals. His lyrics are sooo different, profound, soul filled and hot; his acting is filled with shades of profound emotions and that is invaluable. Rain is sooo good in everything he does that eventually he would make it. I am sure of that cause all Clouds in this side of the ocean will support him thru it. AZA AZA fighting!!!

  28. Ah yes,

Perhaps it is very selfish of me to want to hear him sing in my own native tongue, but I still do. Yes, even though I love all of his songs, regardless of in which language he sings them, there’s just something special about being able to understand the words as they leave his mouth.

But like others here, I will take what I can get. Okay?

I agree, I absolutely just love to hear him speaking in his native language. There is just so much more feeling and emotions in the way he expresses himself. That voice, that voice is just so haunting and mesmerizing that I get so absorbed in what he is saying. I first saw him in Ninja Assassin just earlier this year, but I feel like I’ve been a fan forever, and also robbed because I didn’t know about this man. He makes so many other celebrities seem so shallow and ………almost lazy lol.

I really like him in this documentary with the picture above but felt so bad because I know how he likes to eat. Nonetheless, he was, as always, handsome (esp when he is dressed down and relaxed). 🙂

  30. i gotta be honest about Rain’s singing in different languages.
his Rainism cd “Love Story”, is in perfect english and so are others he has done. but, i simply love listening to him sing in his tongue or Mandarin or Japanese… i just don’t have any need for an english cd. the man’s voice is lovely and he has me singing in those languages, making me feel like i’m learning something, hahahaha

    • LOL english is unnecessary. I just like to know the general idea of what the song is about. No need for him to release an English album.

Lotus, I don’t think we can handle more of him…one is pretty much great!!!..and yes, whoever is translating his songs to English has to do better, he also needs more practice, bu he is coming along nicely considering he does not have much time for it…hopefully we’ll have an English album from him soon…we will wait patiently, as always…sarang BI!!! 😉

    • I think it was double dragon who translated Love Story and Rainism, and they did an awesome job. However, whoever translated Love Song, to me, it just didn’t make much sense in English, but his voice was still haunting.

      • You’re right, newcloud. Roy and Elmo Chong, the Funk Seoul Brothas (Double Dragon) did a beautiful job with those two songs, and had nothing but great things to say about working with Rain.

We’re not sure who — or what — happened with Love Song. But his voice reaches an incredible depth as it wraps around that English. The sound is indescribably beautiful. Tortured.

        Wow.

        Stephe ^@@^

  32. I love the pic you guys used for this thread. He looks so cute and casual in this part of the documentary, but you know right here in the pic he was thinking, “Uggh… THIS food sucks!” Poor thing. When watching this documentary I wanted to cook all kinds of food for him because I felt so bad that he had to eat the SAME thing over and over. And I don’t cook! Lol…

    • Hey Lotus,

I would have commented before now, but I was ill yesterday. Flat on my behind! Feeling a little better today. Thanks for remembering I wanted to see “Baby Ji”. I will go to YT to see what I can find. You are right, the woman who is honored to get him should treasure him with all she has. Men like him are RARE INDEED!

Terri, I agree, I love whatever language he sings, but I want to hear him more in my native tongue now. Hopefully that will be soon!
