Lost in translation, perhaps?

Another extensive, informative article.  Very nice.  However,  I must make this point…

Would Rain, who is always so careful about what he says in the press and who would never carelessly insult anyone in print, really rate the food in the Philippines as “decent”?  I think not.

Surely something was lost in the translation here.

GMANews 9/11/2010 — Philippine Entertainment Portal: K-Pop superstar Rain caps off Manila visit with Intensity concert tonight

Korean pop superstar Rain—whose real name is Jung Ji-Hoon—will be performing tonight, September 11, in front of his Filipino and Philippine-based Korean fans at the SM Mall of Asia Concert Grounds in Pasay City.

The one-night concert dubbed Intensity will be the highlight of Rain’s extended Manila stay, which saw the 28-year-old singer-actor shuttling from Cebu to various locations in Metro Manila to shoot scenes for his upcoming Korean action-drama series titled The Fugitive.

Local television network TV5 will reportedly air the program here in the country under the title Runaway.

In the series, Rain will be portraying a private investigator named Ji Woo. The cast and crew of the show travelled to Seoul, Japan, Macau, Hong Kong and the Philippines to film various scenes, making the program one of the most ambitious series in Korean television…

…Rain’s popularity outside his home country makes him arguably the biggest export of the Korean pop music industry….

  1. Yay for Rain giving such an awesome concert and, as Kongsao said, tearing down that stage! Of course some people got converted into fans. How could you not after watching that?!

  2. @ Iloverain, I understand you just fine! And thank you so much for clearing up a lot what I did read, and I myself am a new admirer of JiHoons work but I’ve been doing has much has possible to try and get up to speed on him and with cloudusa its very easy, from all I’ve read here and found myself on JiHoon, he is such a sweet and very kind gentleman so I feel very strongly if I feel he is wronged in anyway. And the funny thing is I’ve never cared one way or another about celebs personal lives, hahaha! Either I bought the CD or watched the movie and that was it! But with JiHoon I just can’t really explain it all myself? He is just a special soul to me! And I will defend him to the end!!

  3. @Kongsao,I’m so happy it was such a great turn out! I did see some of the concert and they were so loving to Rain! However, Rain’s true fans where never the problem let’s face it!and I for one will not just say all that happen was OK! Everyone should read all comments made, and their was a lot of generalizations, Koreans are like that,or that’s the way Rain is, or he was snobbish! Now with that said, true its over and done with now! And hopefully next time where every he visits including the US everyone will be more professional and respect each other like adults should!

  5. Just got an update from my friend from Cloud Philippines —
Rain was amazing, and the show was awesome. There were thousands who were ‘converted’ (because there were people who came to see the other Korean boyband, U-KISS) and are now Rain fans. Even the media people were impressed and some celebrities were tweeting on how good he was.

  6. I forgot to tell you all, I am a Filipino, and I am a true Rain fan. ^_^ I’m really excited that Rain is in Manila and performed there. I am also an open-minded fan, not a crazy stalker like many others. Though sometimes I may not agree of his wardrobe or how his handlers organize things, I would be one of those who will defend him from Philippine media. I hate Philippine entertainment press (some, not all) because they blow things out of proportion.

I was just happy that Philippine Clouds were there to defend him, and they even appeared on TV just to justify why Rain missed the presscon, and the miscommunication was just that — a miscommunication. The press were already cooking up nasty stories about Rain because they saw him swimming while they were waiting for him in the next room (although I think that was a bad call on Rain’s part — he should have waited for everybody to leave). Philippine Clouds went around to talk to the media people and explained, because they were already calling him unprofessional. We all know how Rain is — he is one of the most professional people I know, he is someone who loves his craft and he has amazing thirst for perfection. And I hate that the media people would write up bad stuff about it just because of one incident.

  7. Philippine Clouds know Rain very well, and they know how he is when it comes to fans, interviews, etc. However, the press were comparing him to other Hollywood entertainers and celebrities who come to the Philippines (like Usher, Black Eyed Peas, Boyz II Men, etc.) and had no problem with Philippine media. We know Rain’s personality and Clouds respect that. They know Rain’s filming site and the hotel where he is at but we were quiet about it while some stalkers beg for Clouds to divulge yhat information. Cloud PH even had their own news “blackout,” with request to people not to post their fan accounts on the web to respect his private time and for security. In light of the recent hostage crisis in Manila, the Clouds understand this need for Rain to be safe at all times during his stay. The media is just ignorant on korean culture and how korean celebrities operate. Philippine media is brutal, and they are used to filipino celebrities sucking up to them for good publicity, and we know very well Rain is not like that.

  12. Hello Janice, please don’t think your being ganged up on, but like Stephe said, how ever the celebs there are, in most countries celebs have stalkers crazy people invading their personal space and not only that but with this stock crap going on their are so many mean and hateful things that are being said about JiHoon, and who knows some crazya.. Could even have made threats on him! Celebs are more and more getting restraining orders against idiots. And as I’ve said before just because your famous does not give people certain rights over your life, people should put themselves in the celebs shoes more often and stops looking for their own selfish needs.

  13. You’re certainly right about that — him getting that bad press.

The weird thing to me is that he has been his usual self this entire time, all of these months (June, July, August, September) outside of S.Korea, and not one country has tried to practically burn him at the stake for usual celebrity behavior until he got to the Philippines.

I don’t know any mega-celeb in the world who likes being ambushed, or people they don’t know approaching them. Ambush = bad idea. Heck, I’m not a celeb and I’m not comfortable with people I don’t know just rushing up in my face. In this day and age, that kind of stuff is dangerous, especially with celeb haters and anti-fans just waiting to hurt somebody.

Poor Rain. He shouldn’t have to risk his safety just to be treated fairly.

Is it that Philippine celebs don’t have restrictions at all, Janice? Are they that open with the public, perhaps? Or maybe the Philippines doesn’t get foreign celebs coming into the country much… is that it, I wonder? I just don’t see Brangelina or Tom Cruise or any American mega-star not using those same restrictions and even MORE.

I appreciate you explaining the media’s mindset over there because, personally, Rain’s restrictions seem normal to me.

    *shrug*

    • I really feel bad about this bad press about Rain in the Philippines. I’m just very glad that the show in mall of Asia was a huge success according to the reports I’ve read. I hope this would prove that whatever negative things said about Rain didn’t affect his popularity over there nor make people like him less. I’m no good writer to explain things. But after reading Agent P’s blog of Cloudph and after learning who said/ wrote/ tweeted what about Rain made a big difference– those people anyway say negative things about anybody and the good thing is — nobody cares what they say because they are not that important! They themselves who said negative things about Rain have negative reputation so who cares! The reputable press I should say had some good things wriiten about Rain 🙂 I don’t see anything wrong in Rain’s restrictions.. even the popular Filipino celebrities have those restrictions when they have shows in Filipino communities here and around the globe. Sad to say not all press people have cultural diversity training and often write things subjectively. Then there is this problem of language barrier that gets foreign celebrities misqouted…

  14. I must add that Rain was getting bad press from Philippine media since he arrived last week. He has, as I would put it, a lot of restrictions — no ambush interviews, no pictures, cannot be approached. He is just being his usual self, but since it’s his first time to perform in the country, the press saw this attitude to be diva-esque in the highest level. And it did not help that there was a miscommunication with the first presscon schedule, and Rain earned a flak from media for not showing up at the presscon and was seen to be taking a dip in the hotel pool.

However, cloud philippines spent time talking to the press and explaining to them how Koreans are very particular with schedule and details, and that certain miscommunication between organizers is understandable. They were trying to protect Rain and stopping the press from saying something nasty about him in the next day’s headlines.

  16. Hi! I’ve been a member of Cloud Philippines for 4 years, and I moved here in NC 3 years ago. I still have contacts with my friends in the Philippines. Some of them were present at the presscon, and they said that the interpreters were “horrible,” even the media got frustrated. My friends did say that Rain apparently enjoyed the food, as most of his answers has the word “food” in them.

    • Hi, Janice.

Thanks for speaking up! I suspected as much, that the interpretations were not up to par, and it really bothered me because I know how easily people can get ticked off at Rain for the slightest thing, and he already has so much on his plate (no pun intended). It’s heartwarming for me to hear that your friends feel he did enjoy his meals. 😀

Wow–I wonder why more competent interpreters weren’t used? Good grief. *sigh* Well, what’s done is done.

I’ve only met one or two fans in the Carolinas. Nice meeting you! 🙂
