[fan cam] “Love Is” : Soul from the Man From Seoul.

When I looked at this partial performance, the first thing I thought was, here is more evidence of just how much “soul” this man from Seoul has humming through his blood.  Doesn’t matter what color his skin is.

This to me is Rain truly lying back, chilling out, and just feeling a song, without thought.  Just connecting with the words and how good they feel.  Just letting what happens… happen.  (Lord knows he was probably tired to death anyway.)  LOVE this.

    • Oh, certainly. You sure can. We’re all about sharing Rain, bringing his performances here as legally as we can (mostly linking or embedding from video services) so that others can spread them as well and enjoy him.

Feel free to embed or provide the video link in your comment if you’d like. And let everyone know what you like about it! 😀

  7. Actually, in my opinion, this song reminds me of classic Soul/R&B which was more so in the 1970’s. There were a lot of slow groove songs back then. Yes, it was a time when singers, really SANG and you didn’t have to necessarily be cute or pretty either. The only thing that mattered was your talent.

What I like about Ji-Hoon is that you can feel a certain authenticity in his delivery of this song in particular. R&B is a music genre not “born” in his native Korea, but he has embraced it and loves it the same way those of us who grew up with it do. It doesn’t “feel fake” coming from him, because he seems to have a genuine Respect for the music and I believe for the people the music was born from.

No you can’t fake that. If I thought he was faking I would say SEE YA JACK!

    • EXACTLY! That’s what I’m talking about, that 70s groove where all you could do was close your eyes and let your head nod back and forth while you listened to it. Oh yeah!

And I think where it comes from is two-fold.

Firstly, I believe Ji-Hoon was born with a natural R&B “tuning fork” that simply lay dormant until he understood what it was and was ready to use it. Secondly, I feel that the Black guy from the States (one of two voice coaches that he hired back in the day… the other one was a professional in Korean theater, I think) was such an influence on him that you can still hear evidence of that to this day. I mean, I remember telling Terri last year, before I found out about the Black teacher, “I don’t know when and I don’t know where, but with that sound coming out of Rain’s mouth, I’ll bet money that at some point a BROTHA got a hold of him.”

I mean honestly, young men just don’t walk around crooning in whiskey-tinged voices like Wilson Pickett, with their bodies moving in R&B flow, every day here much less in South Korea…? Wow.

Comedian Jae-Seok complimented Rain on Happy Together a few years ago by saying in astonishment, “It’s amazing how you can open your mouth to sing and immediately sound like you’re about to cry.”

      I just grinned. 😀

      • LOL!!!………..Oh yeah Stephe, Ji-Hoon was “touched” by the spirit of R&B and he MOST DEFINITELY was annointed by a BROTHA, no doubt!! One can always “hear the call” of their people!….(SMILES) But you are absolutely right….it feels “so natural” coming from this South Korean man. Sometimes I want to say, “You sure you don’t have some Black in you my Korean brotha?”

He reminds me of the R&B singer Tina Marie. When you first heard “I’m Just A Sucka For Ya Love” on the radio you just knew it was a black girl singing. When I found out she was white, I was like well “Shut My Mouth!” The feeling is the same coming from her as it is coming from Rain. R&B is not born to their culture, but that “tuning fork” as you say is so deeply entrenched in both of them that the music seems “just as natural as it wants to be” coming out of them. It also makes it believeable for those of us who grew up with R&B being a definite part of our culture. A person can’t just decide to sing R&B and have it be believeable you have to really embrace it as your own. (If you want ME to believe you!)……(SMILES) It has to be AUTHENTICALLY YOU, no matter your ethnicity. You can’t be shame now!!

If Rain or Tina Marie started to sing some other genre of music, we would be like “Hold on……What are you doing?……now you KNOW you don’t sing that bippity bop fluffy stuff, what’s wrong with you?!”………(SMILES)

        • And you know what? Miss Tina opens her mouth TODAY and sounds exactly the same. She hasn’t lost a thing. It’s like… yesterday, if not better. 🙂 Which means Ji-Hoon is going to be blowing us away until the cows come home. Heheh.

        • Hi, goddess.

The only coach I’ve been able to look up is the one we posted on a week or so ago — Kolleen Park. And I’m not sure if she is the one who he said “was in Korean theater” or not…

The way I found out about the Black coach he hired was when he was doing an interview for one of the documentaries, I do believe, and he just flat out said it. “One was a Black man from the States.” I can’t remember what interview it was: one of Mr. Shin’s special interviews, or MBC Rain’s Coming, or Arirang’s I Am… I’ll probably go back and look at them all just to see.

  10. I agree, Rain is very R&B. He reminds me when American R&B used to be good back in the 1990’s when guys could sing and put on a show while having respectful lyrics. I think he is most soulful in his sad love songs.

  11. i’m with u on that description about Rain’s music. when i first listened to his cd, yes, it’s a feeling you get that touches you within. that’s how you know it’s soulful music. it leaves an impression, an inprint, you keep hearing it in your mind even though the cd has long stopped playing. you find yourself humming the tune without even being aware that your doing it cause the melody stays within you. that is soulful music and that’s what Rain is able to do to so many listeners. he touches them inside, in an unseen place. this guy is gifted.

  12. Awww, this is just beautiful! I agree that most of Rain’s music is straight up R&B, and then there’s also a little hip-hop-soul going on as well. It’s extra special because in my opinion, the R&B market over in the States has become very watered-down and untrue, with singers half-assing it or so busy trying to “crossover” that they completely miss the mark. Rain’s R&B rings true every time. I love it!

  14. Stephe, thank you for this it told me something I’ve suspected all along, JiHoon has been in love or he just loves deeply? Of which well that’s his business, and as far as his color, hell he’s darker than me! Hahaha! Well when he’s tanned anyway and I think that’s the one thing that drew me to him not his color but his style his soulfulness JiHoon is so cool and laid back and even his music I know it’s called kpop but its not, its striaght up R&B, If anyone gets offended it I’m sorry but out of all his songs there’s Maybe two that might have a pop beat, this is my take if someone disagrees that’s more than your right,JiHoon is an excellent actor but music is in his soul and not just any music but soul music and you can be any color or nationality that’s why its called SOUL MUSIC! Muah Sweet JiHoon Love Ya Brother(oppa) Stay
    Healthy!!
