[Breaking news] Shanghai’s Expo Garden Suspends Entertainment Activities For National Mourning

The Shanghai Expo Bureau announced today that all entertainment activities at the Shanghai World Expo would be suspended tomorrow, Sunday, August 15.  This rare, large-scale display of mourning is intended to honor the victims of the massive mudslide that occurred in northwest China’s Gansu Province, on August 8.

Sun Weimin, the Expo Bureau’s concierge director, said that all official flags at the Shanghi World Expo would fly at half-mast tomorrow and that no music would be broadcast throughout the day.  Other Expo participants may decide for themselves whether or not to fly their flags at half-mast.  The announcement was in line with that of the State Council, China’s cabinet, which suspended all public entertainment and ordered that all national flags fly at half-mast on Sunday.

Tomorrow will be the seventh day since the mudslide occurred which, according to some Chinese traditions, marks the height of the mourning period.  The mudslide, which hit Zhouqu County, Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, on Aug. 8, has killed at least 1,156 people and an estimated 588 are still missing.

Let’s all send up a prayer for our Chinese Cloud-sisters and let them know we are thinking of them during this tragic time.

In deepest sympathy,
