Blast from the past #15…

… is the song and the impressive music video Bad Guy, from Rain’s debut album that started it all, n001.  Though the song was a hit, some of its thunder was stolen by Team South Korea making it into 2002 FIFA World Cup play.

Rain was advised to chock it up as a loss and work on a second album.  Instead he decided to stay the course, to stick with n001 and release its second single, Instead of Saying Goodbye, which turned out to be the right decision.  Even back then, our Ji-Hoon was incredibly smart.

Since then, both songs have become legend and he has become a mega-icon well on his way to immortality.  But it all began with Bad Guy, one of our very favorites.

Ooh, the look in his eyes when you realize he has decided to not go back to prison… Enjoy revisiting this marvelous piece of work.  — Stephe ^@@^

  1. What a terrific actor he was, even way back then.

I do hope that someday Rain will manage to land a role in an English-speaking feature film that will appropriately showcase his range, so that audiences in all of the English-speaking countries will be able to see what he can REALLY do.

I have my doubts about Hollywood though. Even today negative stereotypes and limited starring roles for Asian actors and actresses abound, and the situation is not likely to change in the near future. But my hopes are high with regard to Rain, because he is just so very talented and has such a large fan-base that maybe he will be difficult to ignore? Maybe he can manage to break at least a few of the barriers anyway.

FYI, an interesting film festival was broadcast in June by Turner Classic Movies, called Asian Images in Film: Race in Hollywood, which was part of a series of festivals looking at Hollywood’s treatment of minorities in film.

If you didn’t catch it, you should. It was depressing as hell, but interesting nonetheless. After all, the more we are educated about these issues, the better we will be able to fight against them, right?
