[article] Rain to shine in war-set melodrama.

Please note: There is no updated news on Rain’s military service since the last update received directly from the MMA (Military Manpower Administration) and from Rain himself—that his service has been deferred so he can finish his schooling (and the movie and concert projects he has on his 2011 plate). He has said that he’ll be enlisting in the latter part of this year.

Just as we had to play the musical chairs game with “Runaway/Fugitive” (partly because of Korean→English conversion), Rain’s new project is listed as either Red Scarf or Red Muffler or Living in the Sky or In The Sky, depending on where you look (so far). We don’t see a problem, though. It’s the same darned movie and we all know what everyone means, right? Right. 🙂

Rain to shine in war-set melodrama

Production News

Korean pop superstar Rain (비) is to star opposite actress Shin Se-kyung (신세경) in Red Scarf (빨간 마후라 ), a melodramatic war movie that is a remake of the 1964 classic by the late Shin Sang-ok (신상옥).

A spokesman for CJ Entertainment (CJ엔터테인먼트]) today confirmed to Film Business Asia the basic details including Kim Dong-won (김동원) who previously made My Boss, My Teacher (투사부일체) as director and that shooting will begin later this month. CJ also confirmed plans to release it late this year.

The original Red Scarf saw an air force pilot leading his men on bombing runs to Pyongyang and discover the true meaning of being a fighter. It also sees the widow of another pilot find love again.

Rain (real name Jung Ji-hoon, 정지훈), who got his acting debut with CJ’s I’m A Cyborg, But That’s OK (싸이보그지만 괜찮아) and has since starred in The Wachowski brothers’ Speed Racer and Ninja Assassin, hinted at the role in a blog in August last year. His management company J Tune announced the role this weekend. CJ is expected to announce fuller details tomorrow at an event in Seoul.

The 20-year old Shin Se-kyung made her screen debut with My Little Bride (어린 신부) in 2004 and recently appeared in Five Senses of Eros (오감도).

Rain himself has received his mandatory military call-up, but may be able to delay entry into the armed services until he has completed the Master’s degree he is currently also studying.

  4. Gosh, I can’t wait to see that movie!!!! Rain looks soooo darn good in uniform that only that is reason enough to see it. Also, is going to be refreshing to see him doing other things in a movie besides martial arts. Not that I mind seeing him fighting again but is going to be in another setting. I read some article about the movie and sounds really good. I think is going to be similar to Pearl Harbor with Ben Affleck and Josh Garnet but in Korea. 😀

  5. @Stephe I am so excited that he will finally start filiming for the movie. Hopefully we will be able to get some details here and there while he is filming.

I have a question, when did Rain finish getting his undergraduate degree? I was not aware he had finish college. I just recently learned he was going to school to get a master degree. Do you know what he got is undergrate degree in and what he is going to for his masters?

Which branch of the MS has he signed up for? Is it the airforce, army or navy?

    • Hi, flower.

I cannot recall that the military branch of Rain’s enlistment has ever been specified, though people have assumed it’s the army. I tend to lean towards the army as well, as the air force and navy tend to be more for long term career military personnel, rather than someone who is only going to do a few mandatory years and then go back to their normal life. Some celebs have indeed gone in the air force as well, though, so honestly we’ll just have to see what Rain and the MMA (Military Manpower Administration) decide.

As I understand it, Rain graduated from college sometime in 2006 or -07. I’ve realized today that we needed more info on his education for everybody over under his Stats on his Cloud USA Biography page, so it has been updated now and you can read what we know up to this point right HERE. https://cloudusa.wordpress.com/bio-jung-ji-hoon/
