Rain said to be “A-list” star in America.
Allkpop 11/17/2010—
Throughout the years, only a few Asian actors have been able to break through into Hollywood and become acknowledged as a top actor. However, it looks like singer/actor Rain, a.k.a Jung Ji Hoon, was able to be accepted as an ‘A- list’ actor, thanks mostly to the success of his debut American movie, “Ninja Assassin“.
“I didn’t know Rain would be considered an actor in the Hollywood’s A-list. I heard that a representative for one of America’s most well known movie distributors said Rain is part of the actors’ A-list though,” said An Hyung Soo, the producer of KBS 2TV’s ‘Fugitive‘. He further explained that Jung Ji Hoon is considered to be on the same level as actor Jackie Chan.
The producer continued, “I was able to realize Jung Ji Hoon’s status as an actor after meeting with a representative of an American distributor to discuss overseas distributions for ‘Fugitive’.”
Jung Ji Hoon took the lead role in the Hollywood blockbuster “Ninja Assassin” in 2009, and was also part of the supporting cast of the kids movie, ‘Speed Racer’, back in 2008. Because of the great success of ‘Ninja Assassin’, the possibilities for broadcasting of the drama ‘Fugitive’ in America are expected to be high.

remember the Korean military announcing their plans to use Rain and other actors in a film on the day Rain reports for service? i don’t think there will be to much absence of him. the other thing is this. i read that the Director who did Cyborg is now working on a film in Hollywood, yep, they brought him from Korea to Hollywood to work on his film. and it’s no secret that Hollywood has already worked with Korean film producers on films like “The Host”, “Volcano High” and others. plus i believe Rain’s presence will remain on the US radar through this military film and hopefully through the “Red Scarf” (hope that’s the correct name). so i am in full anticipation and expectation to see Rain here in the US even while he does his MS. maybe he’ll even make some music for us before he goes or be featured on soundtracks. who knows.

Yep, they did, busy. And it was pretty cool to read about the Cyborg director. That got all kinds of bells ringing in my head about how the next few years might play out! We know we’re about to have another movie of his. And another album will probably drop. A few more concerts/shows, maybe a farewell for now fanmeet… and then he’ll go in, and while he’s in we’ll get a movie from the military, and things will be going on behind the scenes between him and Hollywood so that the second he gets out he can hit the ground running. (And while he’s in, the media will be breaking their necks trying to follow him during his service and sneak us pics and stuff, you know that.)
I just don’t necessarily see a 2-year drought like some folks do. I certainly don’t see a problem with keeping the home fires burning for JiHoon no matter how long he’s gone. I look forward to that challenge and I think we’re all going to have a lot of fun. I’m excited.
And when he gets OUT… we will all spontaneously combust! ROFL

Ok, makes sense. However, I hope whoever the “powers that be” are don’t forget, his global status is true enough, but one fact still remains, “Popularity” and the ability to keep it nevers goes out of fashion in entertainment. Some old adages come to mind: “When you Snooze You Loose”, “Strike While The Iron Is Hot”, “You Study Long You Study Wrong”, “Out of Sight Out of Mind.”
I will always be a Rain fan and I can appreciate his Power behind the scenes and his networking ability in the industry. He will continue to build his empire that way I am sure, NO DOUBT, but the BUYING PUBLIC has got to want you when You Do come out with your product. I hope when that happens he and the powers in charge of his career pick the right “vehicle” for that to happen.
One thing I can say about Rain, he LOVES performing and I hope when he does come out he does it with a Big Bang, so that he will be performing for many years in the U.S., if that’s his choice. Reality shows are filled with celebrities who USED TO be popular, they’re still rich compared to we everyday folks and living in mansions, but they are absolutely miserable because they can’t sell a ticket like they once did. Just check out the next installment of “Celebrity Fit Club”, you know it’s true…..(SMILE)

i agree Steph, …it seems when reading this article even on other sites some debatable questions arise, but it is not complicated at all. i read another comment about Rain not doing dramas here and only 2 films, but the fact is Hollywood has seen the dramas that he already did, plus Cyborg. his portfolio is pretty impressive and he is not a new comer to acting. he’s just new to the US. but Asia loves him. Hollywood knows that. he certainly can be on the A-List because Hollywood has gone global. Rain through NA and that Discovery documentary (that was shown in over 130 countries),is global and he represents their ticket deeper into Asia. as stated, with the right film to showcase Rain all bets are go. and let’s not forget other people have been wanting Rain. Tom Cruse, who works through another film company, Silvester Stallone and Will Smith already has used Rain’s voice to promote Karate kid in Asia and who owns his own film company as well as Rain’s voice on the Kung-fu Panda Asian version., the Global Green Awards where he won the award for Outstanding Asian Actor and 2 others (that was a US event), not to mention the MTV movie award (which now makes him a movie award winner here in the US). “Dark Castle”, who has worked with WB on 12 films has ranked NA #5 of the 12. on the Action Martial Arts list (old and new films), NA ranks #29 of 133, Time added NA to it’s top 10 and viewers gave it a “B” grade in spite of critics. to me in today’s time it’s all about globalizing. that’s how money and businesses are moving, and those who can, are looking at where the most money is located. IN ASIA! Rain is Asian, Rain is global, Rain is young, Rain is talented and handsome and Rain is new to the US, so Rain gets on the US, A-list.

Yes, yes.
He is an A-Lister for sure.
Now if he could just get this military service thing behind him and get on with his career in Hollywood, I would be a much happier camper.
Sigh.

Yes, the public has their own A-List based on popularity and what celebs they want more of at the moment, BUT…
The A-List in this article appears to be the one that runs underground through Hollywood’s jugular vein. You know, the one that determines who the Powers That Be (directors, producers, movie studios, TV folks, etc.) think would be great for their projects to come.
Fugitive’s producer is relaying info that passed to him from a movie distributor’s rep who is in contact with the people that actually make things happen in Hollywood. This is like, huge.
Hollywood knows they have a gold mine in Jung JiHoon. The fact that we haven’t seen any news concerning future projects, et cetera, only means they are taking time behind the scenes to figure out just how to tap into him (and he’s being very careful weighing any projects himself). Them calling his butt up “just to chat” across the ocean is proof of that, in my eyes, as is his U.S. management (Mr. Choi) suddenly talking to the media about “oh, this is the way we should shape his Hollywood career, yeah…” out of the blue.
And I want them to take their time, don’t just throw him into anything for the hell of it and ruin any chance he has with some Bomb right out of the gate.
This isn’t about the public’s opinion right now. This is about what Hollywood may be planning to spring on the public. Hehehehe. And I love it.

A-List already?…….We haven’t heard anymore talk of ANYTHING regarding Bi in the U.S. not since the brief “buzz” about him being in The Expendables. I don’t know what is used to measure A-List status in the U.S. anymore. Is it ticket sales? Is it how much your movie makes domestically and worldwide? Is is how much salary you CAN command per movie? Is it the amount of movies you make that become blockbusters? These are the things that USED TO be the measure of A-List status. Has this changed?
Someone may be “jumping the gun” (just a tad) regarding his A-list status in the U.S. We KNOW he is all over the STRASTOSPHERE in Asia, but in the U.S. he still has only had ONE MAJOR movie under his belt (Ninja Assassin). I don’t count Speed Racer or maybe I should. There has not even been talk about a Ninja A. sequel.
How can you be A-List in the U.S. with no U.S. projects and none on the horizon? If someone knows more, please enlighten me. If anyone I WANT TO SEE A-LIST, it’s Bi!

I agree. I don’t think he has quite reached that level yet.
