You can’t run an entertainment business on only ONE star.

[Cloud USA] Correction: You CAN run an entertainment business on one star, but IT’S NOT SMART, J.Tune.

So, we’d like to ask you something.  Why haven’t you invested in other artists, as Rain suggested?  Why did you insist on his being the company’s only breadwinner, leaving  the whole load resting completely on his shoulders?

Rain is only ONE PERSON.  Even with him working 365/24/7 (and it is an easily proven fact that he always has…), voluntarily living with no amenities during movie filming, voluntarily taking pay cuts, and voluntarily using his own money to travel and fund numerous company initiatives, somehow it is never enough.  And of course it wouldn’t be, because anyone with any business acumen at all would know that you cannot successfully grow a company, particularly an entertainment company on one artist’s back—or at least you can’t without serious repercussions.

Another thing.  Why are you not promoting Rain properly here in the United States?  We’re all sitting over here waiting for the chance to buy up Rain merchandise the second it hits our shores and yet we have to scramble around for scant opportunities to purchase anything.  We can’t even find his songs on I-Tunes!  What is that about?

And what is the Media’s problem, exactly?  What’s up with you guys?  We see that huge glass of Rain Hater-ade you’ve been drinking from for years, and frankly, we just don’t get it.  Shareholders hate to lose profits.  They fight for every penny, and these are hard times in the entertainment business.  There is always infighting between management and shareholders when it comes to payouts.  That is NOT a scandal.  It’s simply business AS USUAL.  Investing is a major risk.  No one who invests money is ever promised a dime of profit.  Ever.  Losses happen and companies fail all the time.  So, anyone who can’t stand the heat should get out of the frying pan.

Nothing Rain said in his interview with Money Today was “shady” or appeared to be “an attempt to pass blame.”  The problem is you’ve gotten so used to using your own term “Rain’s company” that you’ve completely lost sight of reality.  Rain is not J.Tune’s CEO.  He’s not even J.Tune management and never has been, another easily proven fact.  And anyone who owns stock in anything has the right to sell that stock within the rules of the game, which is something that happens every single day of the week.

Sure, Rain gets paid big bucks, but no one seems to be mentioning the fact that he SPENDS big bucks too.  He’s responsible for feeding a huge staff and their families, his own family, even his friends.  He also patrons charity after charity.  You seem to  be so hung up on what Rain’s got coming in, and yet you say nothing about how much he has going OUT.  You say nothing about the huge profits J.Tune has raked in because Rain is out there pounding the pavement every single day—alone.

This man works really hard, all the time.  He never stops, because everything hinges on him.  Yet all you can do is take pleasure in any misfortune that comes his way.  In the past, his name and reputation have been intentionally sullied by people looking for a quick buck, which any kid playing detective could have easily figured out, and yet you didn’t even care.

Every human being on this planet has made mistakes, Rain included, and everyone has the right to learn from those mistakes and correct them without being vilified.  Frankly, as hard as Rain works, we think he might be better off being a production worker or digging ditches for a living.  At least then he would be able to rest on weekends, show off his talents at local clubs, walk down the street unmolested, publicly have a girlfriend, read the daily newspapers without fear, and enjoy a somewhat normal life.

Just answer this one question:  How do any of you sleep at night?

  1. Okay,

Now everybody knows how much I love Rain, right? Obviously I do, or I wouldn’t spend so much of my limited and precious recreational time working on this crazy fan site for him. And yes, I think he’s handsome and beautiful and all that. I mean, I can spazz out about him as hard as the rest of you Clouds can.

However, there are times when I feel very “parental” towards him too, times when I want so desperately to give him some motherly advice that I can’t stand it. This is one of those times…

I have absolutely NO idea if Rain is even aware of Cloud USA. And even if he is aware of us, I have NO idea whether or not he even bothers to read anything we write.

Hell, I don’t even know if he can even UNDERSTAND what we are saying anyway, because it’s in ENGLISH. So, it’s sort of ridiculous that I’m even writing this at all. But I’m going to write it anyway, because, well, 1) I’m a writer and it’s what I do and 2) I really need to relieve my mind.

Selfish? Perhaps. But frankly, it’s my blog and so, like Napoleon Dynamite, I do what I want. So there.

    Dear Ji-Hoon,

The biggest mistake you made in all of this mess with J.Tune was not trying to manage J.Tune yourself.

I completely understand why you DIDN’T. When you started J.Tune, you were very young and likely had no business management skills at all. So, I’m pretty sure you felt it was much wiser to leave the business management to people who knew more about running an entertainment business than you did. Yes, I’m sure that made perfect sense at the time.

I’m also sure that you got horrible advice from someone from the very beginning. Because if, like you said, you invested 4.1(?) billion KW into that business when it started up, then you DEFINITELY should have had some kind of say in how the company was being managed.

As a majority shareholder you SHOULD have been able to attend shareholder meetings as the largest shareholder and you SHOULD have been given some kind of position in the company–a position that gave you some POWER. And if, as you say, you WEREN’T given that power from the very beginning, then something was terribly wrong with J.Tune from the start.

But that is all in the past. We can’t change our pasts, no matter how hard we want to. So, what matters now is your future.

My advice to you, now that you realize J.Tune management has done such a pitiful job of managing the company AND your career, is this:

If you decide to stay with J.Tune, then the next contract you sign needs to give YOU some kind of say in the management of the company and your (and other artists’ like MBLAQ) career.

Conversely, if you decide to leave J.Tune and start over with another company (or start a new company of your own), then you need to make sure that you are made a full partner in the operation of that company. Even if you don’t understand everything that is going on, you can still surround yourself with trusted advisors who can help you make critical business decisions.

Because you know what? There are so many Rain haters out there that in the end, you are going to be held accountable for the company’s mistakes anyway. Your experience with J.Tune has already taught you that. So, if you know you’re going to be taking the blame for the company’s failures no matter WHAT you do, then why not maintain close control of the operations, so that you also can take credit for the company’s SUCCESSES?

Yes, managing a company is difficult. I should know. I’ve done it myself. But you simply cannot afford, at this point, to leave this responsibility to others. You just can’t. Proclaiming your innocence in the wrongdoings of a company that you either own or do business with will only work to a certain point when it comes to the law.

Besides, I’ve lived long enough to know that if you want things to be done right you either have to do them yourself or you have to watch the people doing those things. Because people can’t be trusted. They just can’t. Especially when it comes to large sums of money. And yes, that is a shame and very sad to say.

    But it’s absolutely true.

    • You’re right Terri, those that Rain left in charge to “handle” his affairs, have screwed him over royally. Nobody is ever going to care about your affairs they way you will. This has been a hard lesson for Rain to learn and to have to learn it publically. So many celebrities have entrusted their affairs to others who either, run their businesses in the ground or steal them blind of their money! Yes I agree totally, Ji-Hoon you need to have CONTROLLING POWER in your next company, so sink or swim it’s ALL YOURS and you can do what you DAMN WELL PLEASE!!

And to anybody who wants to work with you, you can say “You Can Get With This, Or You Can Get With That!”……..Or you can PRESS ON!!………

  2. These is typical of Korean entertaiment management, they want one artists to shoulder ALL of the weight, as if they have nothing do to but say that they represent them, that is why so many are leaving the korean companies, I was hoping J.Tune would be more savy being that thay had BI, a global superstar, they do not care to promotte overseas, wich is a cash cow, they want to sit back and just enjoy BI’s hard work and they do nothing, I’m happy BI left, he had every right to sell his stock, maybe if they would have done their part of the work he would not have, but since they expect him to do it all might as well sell the stock and remain the entertainer, wich is what they consider him all along, they have no respect for him, and it shows in the treatment they afforded him thru out his tenure in J.Tune, obviuosly those stockholders, as old as they are do not hace the bussiness acumen BI has at his age…good for him not to let them use him as a tool to enrich themselves while they work him to death…I hope more Korean artists do leave those agencies wich are nothing but slave owners…WE LOVE YOU BI!!!…aja aja!!! 🙂

  4. OMG this situation is helpless!!! Up until this contract expires our Rain is a slave of J.Tunes to do as they wish. No wonder he has been sooo down!!! I thought it was the military thing but really this is much worse. J. Tune should be ashame of themselves making him a scapegoat of this situation when they are the only culprits. I am sure than just by putting his music on itunes they could get enough funds to keep doing business. Rain is working soo hard and in charge of music, coreography, shows, etc. and in top of that they pretent that he also keep them afloat. Pleeasse!! That’s to much to ask from anybody. I think that he should keep working for this year and two months and then look for some other company that can do him justice. The worst thing that is going to happen to J. Tunes is seeing Rain grow into a mega star and not be there with him.

    • Totally agree. And his presence on Itunes is a great way for everyone to be able to enjoy some Rain-osity while he’s in the military.

  5. Two words……..JTUNE Sucks!…..Terri, I hear and fully understand everything you are saying with respect to the “partnership” between JTUNE and WMA. However, the fact remains that someone at JTUNE probably had ample time to sort through, I am sure, MANY offers Rain surely had during the MTV award timeframe and still no “partnership” DEALS could be made to maximize Rain’s U.S. presence. NO the JTUNE management staff just STRAIGHT UP decided to not work as diligently as they could have on Rain’s behalf. Simple as that! My fellow sister Clouds seem to be in agreement that at least we should have been able to have some Rain downloadable music on our computers/ipods by now. I wonder what JTUNE’s response would be as to the music not being made available, if they were asked point blank?

Ji-Hoon….run, don’t walk past GO when your contract ends. You have a growing audience in the U.S. just waiting for what your talents have to offer! In the meantime……Stay Strong!!

  6. Thanks for sharing this. I can’t wait until his contract with J.Tune is over, I don’t trust them at all and it seems like their is some shady stuff going on and that Rain is the fall guy. Mblaq seems to be ok so far except for Joon who has been sick and hospitalized for exhaustion. I couldn’t believe neither one of them was on Itunes. Most other Kpop companies have at the most recent album form their artist on there like Seven, Beast, Taeyang ect. Rain’s name is now known in America and people will google him and find out about his music. Makes no sense for their to be no legal way to download his work.

    Like

    • I agree completely. You can barely find anything about Rain in the U.S. market, and yet, when you do a search for other KPop artists on Itunes, Amazon.com, etc. you find quite a bit (you can find a few import cds of Rain’s on Amazon, but most of the listings are not available anymore). Why is that? Enquiriing minds want to know! I want to buy some Rain mp3s legally dammit! Get on that, Jtune!

  7. @busybee1982

it is my understanding that WMA (William Morris) is Rain’s agency for movies only. If you watch the Hip Korea documentary, the agency rep there specifically states that it is their job to scope out movie roles that are appropriate for Rain. You will also notice that they are known for representing top actors (i.e. Jackie Chan, Mel Gibson, Russel Crowe (I think), etc., & not necessarily singers/dancers. I thought JTune Camp was his music management agency, and that they were responsible for managing his publicity, concerts, interviews, and that sort of thing in re Rain as a singer/dancer/model. But JTune Entertainment, as the production company, would be responsible for actually making the music available to services such as iTunes.

Now, someone can please correct me on this if you have more knowledge of the industry, but I think that’s how it’s supposed to be working.

For example, apparently Rain was considered for a role in The Expendables. This is something WMA would have dealt with. However, if Rain was already committed to the Zepp tour (is that the one he just wrapped up in China), then WMA’s hands would have been tied on the matter.

    Like

    • Redd,

You are correct in part. Please see my comment under Busybee’s comment talking about the “strategic partnership” between WMA and J.Tune for more information on the current situation with Rain here in the States.

Also, WMA does much more than movies. WMA represents clients from all artistic disciplines, including motion pictures, television, music, theater, publishing, commercials, sports, digital media, and video games. So, they could actually represent Rain musically as well. (But they don’t currently do that, because he is currently managed musically by J.Tune.)

  9. just thought i’d share this…don’t forget peeps, that Rain is already signed with a US Talent Agency, what is it William Morris Agency? don’t know if the contract is over or not, but it seems they are the ones who should be handleing Rain’s exposure here in the US. it was never clear what was in that contract or for how long it was for (at least not to me). did it include music as well as movies? hummm don’t know. but aside from movie promotions, i don’t see anything else that they have done to expose Rain’s music here, if indeed this was/is included in the contract. and i don’t think JTune can interferr or influence the US contract. don’t forget William Morris is also Jackie Chan and several other Asian well knowns and, (just my opinion) i don’t see really what they do for any of their artist Asian or Others. but, i am sure Rain is observing how they are handling him over here. is he satisfied with what they are doing? remains to be seen. but, WMA are the ones we should be questioning.

    Like

    • Busybee,

Yes, Rain is STILL signed with William Morris. He signed with them in 2008. They are the ones that got him the Ninja Assassin role, I believe, because his sign-up took place in February 2008, and at the press conference a WMA representative announced that Rain was “likely to star in a Hollywood ninja movie soon.” So, I think Ninja Assassin was a WMA-offered movie.

Even now, WMA is constantly working for Rain behind the scenes. For example, Rain was recently considered for a part in Sylvester Stallone’s movie “The Expendables,” but he didn’t take it due to scheduling conflicts with his Zepp Love Tour. That offer likely came from Rain’s WMA connection. Also, Rain spoke in a recent interview about another American movie he is now set to act in…one he can’t talk about yet because of the contract currently in place. If that one is an American movie, then it’s probably a safe bet that THAT movie offer came from WMA as well.

One thing that people seem to be forgetting with regard to William Morris is this little factoid. Rain’s sign up with William Morris was NOT your typical “free agent” sign up. Instead, it was actually a “strategic partnership” set up between William Morris and J.Tune. Why? Well, because at the time, RAIN ALREADY HAD A TALENT MANAGEMENT CONTRACT IN PLACE WITH J.TUNE. So, that was the only way the deal could be done. (Source Yonhap News here: http://www.yonhapnews.co.kr/entertainment/2008/02/11/1104000000AKR20080211102800041.HTML and English translation here: http://krnloop.wordpress.com/2008/02/11/rain-under-william-morris-agency/)

      What this little “strategic partnership” means is that although Rain may see opportunities come his way through William Morris, he can only take them if A DEAL CAN BE STRUCK WITH J.TUNE. So, even if William Morris has a film they want Rain to consider, they are required to send the script and information to J.Tune, so J.Tune can look the offer over and approve (or disapprove) of it. The same scenario would apply with any modeling endorsements or American recording contract offers Rain receives. William Morris can present opportunities to J.Tune, but ultimately J.Tune holds all of the cards right now. Why? BECAUSE J.TUNE HOLDS RAIN’S TALENT MANAGEMENT CONTRACT. At least they do until Rain’s contract with them runs out in a year and two months. :-}

As for Rain’s previous work, William Morris has no say whatsoever with regard to Rain’s already produced products. The music he has already produced was produced by JYP and J.Tune, and as such, JYP and J.Tune can market it to whomever they want–including to I-Tunes. The problem is they are not DOING that. My question to them is WHY are they NOT doing that?

So you see? It’s a tad more complicated than just “putting Rain to work over here.” So, I say how about we give WMA some time to develop Rain’s career the RIGHT way. After all, we certainly want them to do it right, yes? So, let’s wait and see how the next 24 months unfolds with regard to Rain and his presence here in the U.S. Then, after that, if we are still not seeing more Rain on our movie screens or on our store shelves, then we can start hollering. Okay?

And let me close this very long-winded comment by saying that my wish for Rain when his contract runs out with J.Tune in a year and two months is this: I truly hope he will carefully consider ALL of his options and choose the option in which 1) his career will be better managed and 2) HE will be able to choose the kind of work HE wants to do HIMSELF.

Thank you for clarifying the relationship between Rain and JTune and WMA. I get what you’re saying about WMA developing Rain’s career the “right” way, although it seems that they really have no other choice anyway, since they have to pass everything through JTune. WMA I trust. JTune I do not. It really is too bad. Does someone at JTune have it in for Rain? Could someone please just be professional and do their friggin jobs? WTF???

If the shareholders at Jtune knew about his selling of his stocks that’s being going on for awhile, I can imagine that they might have felt the need to not do a damned thing for him.

That is so ridiculous and I am so furious. I feel so bad for poor Bi. I hope he takes the time now to consider his options and do what’s right for himself. Ok now let me take a few calming breaths… Woosaaahhh… lol.

Bottom line is too much company infighting obviously led them to do nothing, sit on their asses and ride Rain’s back, until there was nothing left. When they should have been working to Solidify that company, but who gets blamed for the fall? Unfortunately, the beautiful face of the company, Rain. They seem happy to let him take the heat also. After his contract is up, he’ll be a “free agent” and he can go whereever the hell he wants. Hopefully, that will be far away from JTUNE. Well said, sister Cloud. I searched all over iTunes and could not believe that I could not find ANYTHING by Rain. (Granted, the packaging of the CD’s make them totally worth buying from overseas and waiting 2 weeks for shipping) …Still, there was so much interest in Rain after he won the badass award that JTune just let go swizzling down the drain. Those dudes…who are they anyway?! We need to protest on their doorsteps! We are just regular folk, and we know enough to know that a music production company is supposed to PRODUCE. Hello??? We should send them a step-by-step guide direct from CloudUSA of the proper ways to manage an entertainment company, build it’s repertoire, and market it’s artists.
Step One (in the case of a company partially founded by and heavily invested in by a top artist):
Give our top artist much leeway in determining how his career will be managed.
    Step Two:
Establish a New Talent Development Department.
    Step Three *the kicker*:
    Actually develop New Talent

Anymore ideas out there? We really should print and bind and mail it off ASAP.

  22. Boy, the Asian media “goes in hard!” I said the exact same thing on earlier posts regarding this issue. JTUNE was responsible for the ACTUAL GROWNING of the company, something they somehow “fell asleep” on. It’s so true you can’t grow a company on the back of 1 man!

It seems as though “somebody” truly doesn’t want Rain to expand to the U.S. market or to succeed in general. Maybe there are those who would see him fail, so they can say “see we knew you couldn’t do it.”

@ Redd, yeah maybe Rain could look to the U.S. recording industry, duet with some more U.S. singers, then do his own album. Take on some more U.S. movies, possibly with ensemble casts so he can reach wider audiences, then do another movie with a starring role.

@ Stephe, you are right we in the U.S. have been “chomping at the bit” JUST WAITING for a U.S. product any U.S. product from Rain’s camp with none to show. ANY SELF RESPECTING COMPANY BENT ON MAKING A REAL PROFIT, would have CAPITALIZED SO DAMNED FAST on Rain’s winning that MTV Badass award! JTUNE should have been ALL OVER any and all U.S. opportunities that came Rain’s way. I thought it odd that there was/is nothing over here, not even an “inkling” of any U.S. projects, other than a missed opportunity in The Expendables! I also, went to iTunes and couldn’t find Rain’s music. JTUNE could have at least made his music available to the U.S., that could have been INSTANT profits right there, without even making ANY NEW PRODUCTS!

I agree with everyone else there is some Deep “Shiggity” going on behind the scenes at JTUNE and it goes way deeper than just Rain selling off some JTUNE stock. Hell, Rain even said in the above interview (if I read it correctly) that he still has some SixtoFive stock that he can’t do anything with cause the company is now defunct and that has made him sad.

This unfortunate situation is somebody going in hard on this young man. Someone has a real “axe to grind.” However, Ji-Hoon, I will say this yet again. YOU are a BEAUTIFUL SOUL and GOD protects his own. I pity ANYONE who has dared to cause you harm. Cause GOD said vengenance is HIS……..So SOMEBODY is really gonna get it!!!

  26. Well, the digging ditches thing was from Terri, y’all… hahahaha. Though I absolutely agree with it. The man might as well be doing manual labor for all the thanks he gets. Matter of fact, if he was digging ditches, at least he’d only be working ten lousy hours a day. You know?

And he’d be looking hot as hell in a hard hat.

And he’d be a hell of a lot more accessible to all of us Clouds. 😀

  27. Preach Stephe!! I agree with everything you said… except the digging ditches thing… coz, ya know… I love me some Rain and I’d be sad! Lol I know you were being fascetious. But Omg… what’s up with the Asian news industry and why do they hate Rain so much? Damn… can’t the guy catch a break?

  29. in TOTAL AGREEMENT with u CloudUSA. i have strong feelings about all of these articles released for the past few months. and i don’t mind adding that now a pattern has developed as to when they have been released (always, right after an annoucement of something good happening for him).

  30. I don’t know if “we” all think he’d be better off digging ditches, but I agree with everything else you said. What has J. Tune been doing all this time? And even now, they are sitting on their hands in silence while Rain takes ALL the flack for their failures over the past, what, 3 or so years? It is very angering, and I am sure very frustrating for Rain. Sure he sold all his stock in the company, but he’s contractually bound to them for another year. Then there’s the military, but then what? Does he find another company? Go back to JYP? He already said he does not want to be a businessman, and with the way things are going down with J. Tune, I doubt anyone would invest w/him into a new company anyway.

Perhaps it will be time for Rain to find a U.S.-based record label. Continue recording in korean, while still working on his english skills, if he hasn’t perfected them by then. U.S. artists sell tons overseas, right?

    Love you Rain!
