Because of Rain, the MTV Movie Awards will be broadcast live in Korea for the first time.

[ *ETA 6/3/2010: More broadcast times for the show, including in Australia, have been added to this post. ^@@^]

Asian source Osen News is reporting today that due to Rain’s Top Five nomination, the 2010 MTV Movie Awards will be carried LIVE on MTV Korea.  If Rain wins the Golden Popcorn statuette for Biggest Badass Star of the year, he will be the first Korean actor in history to receive an MTV Movie Award.

MTV Korea will broadcast the main ceremony at Gibson Amphitheater in Universal City, California (including the award announcements and performances, excluding the pre-show and walking of the Red Carpet) on June 7th for two hours, starting at 10 AM.  Comedian Aziz Ansari will host the show, Tom Cruise, Cameron Diaz, and other top stars are slated to appear as presenters, and Christina Aguilera will perform.

Three new categories have been added to these global popularity awards this year: Biggest Badass Star, Global Superstar, and Best Scared-As-S**t Performance.  Rain earned his nomination with his performance in NINJA ASSASSIN, his first Hollywood leading role.

(Thanks to rain bird and Rain Europe for this information.)

My goodness.  Two things immediately come to my mind as I sit here.  Firstly—this has grown into an even BIGGER deal than it was, what with no Korean actor ever having been included in this before.  It really is daunting to think about the incredible pressure to win that is on Rain’s shoulders now, as if he doesn’t have enough of that.  And, while young hip Koreans surely understand what the MTV Movie Awards are all about (undignified fun, unmitigated gall, the merciless spoofing of celebs, and grown people acting like complete 12-year-olds), and while these awards are pretty darned important when it comes to what’s hot in America’s mainstream, I shudder to think of the expression on the older generation’s faces when they tune in expecting something along the lines of the Academy Awards.

And secondly—I can only imagine what “Biggest Badass Star” and “Best Scared-As-S**t Performance” translates to (in Hangeul) as halmoni reads her morning paper.  LOL!

    • Yeah, I know, K…

It would be around 2 AM live over your way, but I’m still sort of surprised your broadcasters didn’t jump on the bandwagon. At least they are airing it, though.

Are YOU watching your Ninja Assassin DVD? 😀

  3. I really could care less how Korean people perceive this awards…it is not for them but for BI, and if halmoni doesn’t like it, too bad, this is for BI to come to the forefront of American entertaiment and this is a great venue for that since it is the younger generation that drives it, Korean society is just too hypocritical they are not the innocents they want the world to think they are,too bad artists heve to live with the censorship from government, what they don’t know is that thru internet they have access to anything they want to see, I hope BI can open up their closed views on western society…aja aja BI!!!

  5. Wow.

I am having such a strange reaction to this news. I really am.

In one way, it’s extremely exciting to think that Rain fans in Korea will be able to tune in and see the show and support one of their favorite stars. Yet, in another way, it’s somewhat horrifying.

Although the MTV Movie Awards ARE an “honor” and can be “fun,” at the same time, they also can be horribly vulgar and so over-the-top that many people, even here in the States, are offended by them.

I mean think about it. How “serious” can a category named “Biggest, Badass Star” really be, after all?

One thing everyone should know is this show is all about popularity and fun and comedy. So, you’d better believe that if any of the comedians get the chance to make jokes at Rain’s expense, they are going to do just that. Everyone attending will be a target, and Rain will be no exception. So, I caution everyone to please be prepared for that. (Remember Stephen Colbert and the Dance Off and how many people in Korea misunderstood Colbert’s comments fake insults about Rain? Well, this show has the same potential.)

I can’t even explain how much this affected me when I read this. I am so weird.

    • You are right~ the humor will be lost or totally taken the wrong way. The awards are an honor only because it’s fan voted, project loved.
      lol at the translation.
